God bless his family during this time of bereavement. Hopefully, God above lets us look down at some things when we pass.

Rick, here is a very interesting link that even shows UTA's new BB venue. http://www.sportsbybrooks.com/firing-line-knight-c%20alls-uta-about-hoops-job-29545

Say what you say, but in a sense, Karl Benson just trumped us I do believe by bringing in a team in our back yard. So do we rest on our laurels of having a new stadium now? Not if UTA starts playing WAC football at Jerry's World. We need to show the WAC what kind of home OOC schedules that we can get at the MGS that they will have to wait 10 years minimum of their own football program development to do the same. The arms race is on folks! We cannot afford to blink.

Power Ranking By relevance - All 120 FBS teams
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
And so we should hope that all the blogs that rarely write anything positive about UNT (even when we have a marketable product) should all succeed? Hmmm? We receive no high profile respect or poll consideration beating SBC teams and therefore even more reason to try to load up our future home OOC schedule at the Mean Green Stadium with schools who have in the past been a Top 25 program or who might (again) make it back to the Top 25, but we also know "We the People" often get blatantly ignored by some from our own alma mater with what we'd like to see happen for our school. I know having a new stadium is going to have some joining hands singing Kum Bah Yah and will give many, many passes for past management transgressions in Denton, but we still need to realize that we can't just stop with a new stadium, either. Hell, Texas State U (TSU) officials are already talking about expanding their presently under construction expansion to 34,000 and with Coach Fran in San Marcos, that will happen sooner than later IMO. Folks, Texas State U cleary has their gun sights aimed at North Texas if you don't already know that by now. Again, we cannot do what we will be so-ooooo tempted to do in Denton and rest on the laurels of having a new stadium & let it market itself. Truth be known the MGS is (like other areas at UNT such as our Tier 1 ambitions) probably 25 years late in happening. Of course, the past 25 years have been most unsettling as we had to be on the wildest roller coaster ride in modern NCAA history jumping from division to divison--from conferences to conferences--from one shade of green to another as we even now still try to find our identity. Sticking with one branding thru the next 2 or 3 UNT HFC's would probably help in that regard and finding a logo for our helmet that stays awhile is a long over-due wish for many on Harry's board. The Formula To Overcome Our Past 25 Years Football Roller Coaster Ride? Put Troy U on a multi-year vacation and UNT wins a much improved Sun Belt FB Championship numerous times, beat a ranked team in a bowl if such scheduling a ranked team is even possible for the SBC, bring ranked teams into Mean Green Stadium (#15 thru #25) and beat said ranked teams and the last 25 years would become a short memory for all. -
Belated Happy Birthday, Scottie! You are absolutely one of the creme de la creme of Mean Green fandom. Remember all our group getting pulled over by the Oklahoma DPS after that OU game? I can't remember who the driver of that SUV was that got the undivided attention of that officer's radar that night for some reason, though--probably old'theimers, eh? GMG!

Big time stadium and still the small time mind-set? I never, never, never thought this new stadium would take the stripes off that ol' zebra of "still operating and marketing the way we have mostly done it the last 15 or so years" and with many of the same cast. The first game will not sell out on the basis of our having a new stadium if some think it will. The game is on ESPN which makes it even tougher to sell out. I have left that Saturday open on my usual DJ wedding and events schedule and 2 or 3 of us older nestors from Parker County plan to attend the UH game. Yet.................Texas Southern of the SWAC? Please, please, please tell me you are joking about the Tigers as a football oponent in our new stadium. TSU is a fine school (with a fine law school) off Wheeler Street in Houston but shouldn't be the opponent for a home game at the new football palace some have waited almost till that great gettin' up morning to see finally materialize in Denton. The SBC gives us a regular menu of lower tier FBS school on our annual schedule, but more Houstons and Indiana's should be the ones we are aiming to schedule at the new MGS so when Coach Mac does get us a good team in Denton better OOC home games would help us rise in the rankings that just beating upper echelon Sun Belt teams alone will never allow such to happen. In 10 years of SBC play, it hasn't yet gotten one of our teams a Top 25 ranking (when maybe we should have had at least one IMO). The MAC has been there a few times, but have been in business longer than the SBC, too. The new stadium will buy some time (and a helluva' bunch of passes) for some up there, but one has to wonder why multi-year staffers cannot get bigger jobs elsewhere and give North Texas a chance for new blood, ie, a new "so called" school of thought and fresh ideas and who knows, maybe even newbies with more FBS & upward contacts with the caliber of schools the Mean Green need to be playing in our new stadium. Worse case scenario is to have piss ant OOC schedules which would ultimately negate the whole upwardly bound spirit of having a new stadium in the first place. Bringing across the interstate what we already had at Fouts Field the last decade or so would be a disaster and make some wonder "why did they build that stadium to bring THOSE kind of teams into Denton. Just sayin' how I know others of you also feel on this subject. GMG! PS: I read in the (I believe it was a San Antonio newspaper) where Texas State wants to expand what they will have soon to a 34,000 seat stadium as quickly as they can. Wonder who those TSU'ers have their sights aimed toward passing up with that?

Feedback for Upcoming Texas Monthly Article
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
6). What classic game do fans refer to? October 25, 1975 North Texas beat the Tennessee Volunteers at Neyland Stadium in front of 72,670 Volunteer fans. Harry, I went on for years thinking Tennessee must have just had a bad team in 1975 until upon further review many years later (and on the internet) I ran across one small fact that the Vols were actually 6 & 5 in the Fall of '75. By today's NCAA standards, the Mean Green would have then beaten a "bowl bound" University of Tennessee Volunteers football team. Can TM add that small detail to that classic game in thisspecial issue, because other-wise the rest of our fellow Texicans will probably also think "Gol' darn it, Tennessee must have been terrrrrrrrrrrrible in 1975." Harry, 3 Personal Major Milestones For Me As An NT Student & MG Fan: (1) The Hiring of Hayden Fry in 12/72. (2) Win over Tennessee in 1975 (3) And finally, a long over-due new football stadium yet....better late than never. It saddens me as I know it does many other older alums on this forum (and beyond) all those we've known thru the years who will not be around for its debut on 9/10/2011. Addendum: It's a no-brainer to say our future is very, very bright in Mean Green Country. Our first hire of a former BCS head football coach, ie, Coach Mac, since Fry gives many of us older alums a similar enthusiasm of our younger alums and a renewed hope that we will go back (again) to setting higher goals since low goals are normally easier to reach; albeit we might all agree that we had problems even reaching some of those the last 30 plus years playing at the lesser levels of NCAA football. Through the decades we had way too much "we can't' do that at North Texas" from staffers that truth be known truly could "not" do that at North Texas due to prior backgrounds and no real high profile connections with those in the upper echelons of the NCAA who can help a school like UNT go from point A to point B much, much quicker. For instance, Fry makes one phone call to Darrell K. Royal down in Austin and UNT turns the heads of Texans everywhere by suddenly having the University of Texas on its schedule for the first time in our alma mater's history. So yes, the old adage of sometimes it actually isn't what you know but who you know that helps move a program like UNT's timeline along quicker.. Yet in all fairness......to all UNT footballl coaches and ancillary staff prior to Coach Mac, but we did have an enormous Pink Elephant (namely Fouts Field) which held us back in more ways than we as NT Exes will probably ever know, but the new Mean Green Stadium now gives us a legitimate chance to get our Mean Green ship headed back in the right waters and in the right direction. Not sayin' we will ever be a UT, Ohio State, Notre Dame and the like, but just as Norm Hitzghes said right after we hired Coach Mac: "Why Not"..... North Texas being another Boise State, especially now in light of that new stadium? " We're behind where we should really be, but circumstances and sometimes personnel created that scenario for UNT, but we can make up for all of that now in warp speed because of that new major college football stadium located on all that multi-acreage of prime real estate between those 2 Texas interstates. -
Kathy Ireland has turned in her shower towl from UNT's venerable Fouts Field's (and the movie version of Necessary Roughness) to the industry of which I'm involved that is 80% of my bookings). http://www.firedrummarketing.com/public_message_view.jsp?s=1k4gaoh5ns

Rivals 120 or http://collegefootba...asp?CID=1233107 Marshall U certainly has taken a plunge. Phil Steele's College Football magazine was also kinder to us than I would have expected since we sorta' did not meet his expecations last year. Harry, if this is not supposed to be linked please just remove the thread. GMG!

Unt Launching "branding Initiative"
PlummMeanGreen replied to UNTflyer's topic in Mean Green Football
And what degree of success do you expect this go around? Seriously, the new stadium does give UNT a golden opp if they will only take advantage of that and get real proven marketing people on top of this and we'd know if that happens by where we see our new branding products being sold. GMG! -
Unt Launching "branding Initiative"
PlummMeanGreen replied to UNTflyer's topic in Mean Green Football
And that would be Denton, Ponder and Krum? Was at a Loves off I-20 in Weatherford and found a baseball cap from Northwestern St. (those Demons from the old Southland Conference) but you can already guess which school baseball cap I can't seem to recall ever seeing at this same Loves. UNT can brand till all the steers start smelling the branding irons & run Westward, but until UNT gets someone on their staff who can find a map that gets them outside Denton County to get our product out to our masses, then they will be doing the same damn thing over and over again. (And no, we don't need volunteer teams of UNT alums to do their nicely paid jobs, either). GMG!- 68 replies

No matter where our coach came from and one with D1 HFC experience is what some of us have only been waiting for for about 30+ years now; but no matter who our coach is......if our 2011 Mean Green football squad's team speed and lineman play is not even of upper division SBC quality, it will be a tough year. Talented football teams with good overall team speed have been known to make a fair coach turn from good to a great one. The UH Coogs will have more team speed than North Texas because that is what CUSA schools know they have to recruit toward annually and come 3'rd or 4'th quarter of our new stadium's debut I'm afraid it will show on the scoreboard but still......that is why they play the game. Of course, the mighty college football game upset still gives all reasons to hope. From another era long gone by, I guess that is what happened in Knoxville, Tennessee, circa 1975, since we were hardly favored to win that game, either. Traditionally on GMG.com, there will be much green kool-ade consumed (as there should be) between now and September 10'th, the date of our stadium debut game, but I sure wish Coach Mac and this staff could have coached our previous 2 season's football teams. For certain it would have given us a 2 year head start on where I believe Coach Mac will take Mean Green football but as said about such things "it is what is is" and we'll go with it as it is. Patience may yet have to be another virtuous path for us to follow even with this staff because even the great Saint Hayden Fry in his 2'nd year in MG Country had a 2-7-1 record so one just never knows with these new coaching regimes; but what we need from Coach Mac is a very solid foundation to be built that will eventually take us places (and rankings) never before seen in Mean Green Country. So.....the first 3 years from our most promising new coaching staff may frustrate some of our (understandably) very impatient elect could very well be the moral of this post. GMG!

Would have loved to have seen this present coaching staff coach our team of the last 2 years. I think Coach Mac is 3 years away from showing us all the kind of upgrade we can expect for (hopefully) a long tenured success of a job we all hope he will have at UNT. We cannot go back to the days of good teams with slow speed because there are many schools in the former 1-AA level of NCAA football that have that on an annual basis already. Good teams w/o overall good team speed we've seen most of the last 10 or so years but I think the added element of across the board good team speed will take us to a higher level beyond anything the Sun Belt Conference has yet to see. IMO, Troy has come closest to doing that with 1 or 2 of their teams, but I hope "a good team with overall good to excellent team speed will be our usual and expected annual staple in Mean Green Country. IMO.....ex conference mate Boise State should still be our long term model for a success at a higher level. Thankfully, we've got the facilities for that to be able to happen now. The new stadium coupled with this coaching staff has been the long missing multi-decade's piece to our puzzle--better late than never. GMG!

At 60 it's my God-given right to be incoherent from time to time (and if you've ever been that way you'd know how I have felt when I was), but concerning North Texas, I think most objective posters on this board (mostly my age give or take a few years) and who have decades of all this MG business from which to judge by) would say I've been mostly correct the last 4 decades about what I have posted (or written letters to UNT powers) about what we could do to improve our product and the kind of personnel we could hire who would not abuse their power by telling us how lucky we were to have them on payroll albeit most those years under their watch we had Bottom 25 programs (across the board). Mutli-decades of non-stop terrible hirings (with subsequent poor annual results) and many of which their North Texas job was their highest career pinnacle has tended to take the wind out of many of our sails, though, and has caused many of our alums/fans throw their hands up and leave behind that which always seemed to get the same results over and over again with the same people in charge. I know, this will be incoherent to some who may not have the ability to have a perspective on our situation(s) from a multi-decades standpoint. Just, uh, sayin' how many others feel but simply will not post because of a perceived loss of popularity to get an extra Mean Green Eagle star in their crown I suppose. The new football staff looks very promising, but I honestly do not know about those same "running in motion" slackers who are still around all these years later who would still use the same ol' methods to promote this new staff and their potential. The new stadium will buy about a years time to take the real focus off of those who created those problems but still............sometimes upwardly mobile personnel change (and fresh methods) of those who could come in here actually take us out of where we've been forever along with a systematic NCAA march upward to a better neighborhood is good and is good for all parties concerned. Just sayin'......that which will not tickle too many ears on this forum but the aforementioned content in this very paragraph is not what gets schools like North Texas out of where we are and have been for almost an adult lifetime, now does it? Proceed--go on now... GMG!

Texas State Honors Former Nt Player
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Guess we need to make George Strait an honorary NT Ex now? Seriously, he was just doing the "community thing" since that was where he landed after his football days. Amazing how that probably has even happened for UNT a few times if someone would merely do the checking. For instance, the Utter family of Denton were big SMU'ers but Papa Bill did very much for the Mean Green. The late Robert Dedman got his Bachelors at UT but SMU certainly benefitted from him years later. GMG! -
Students Living On Campus - Texas Schools
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Fair enough, but UH you can't count Texas Department of Correction's housing in this count, pal. I lived one block from campus at 316 Fry Street and was considerred a commuter. Go figure... North Texas has more than plenty of students who have shown they will show up en mass on Game Day but thats when we win; something we haven't done too consistently most my lifetime. GMG! PS: Still, it appears the THECB numbers seem a bit off for North Texas housing projections. -

Having the WAC eye-ball us is like having the ugliest girl in school begging to go out with ya'.

And who among Rivals would explain "why" they lose stars if they could begin to try? Honest to goodness, this is why it is so satsifying to see a Boise who has beaten some decent schools in bowls (start with OU) with their annual very low ranked recruiting classes; anyhow, this is why it is so fun to see the Davids out there slew all the Goliaths. Still the one main common denominator of schools like Boise and TCU is that they started their recruiting season by psutting kids on their boards quite early of which most had...speed. GMG!
