Mountain West, Conference USA merger could benefit UTSA
PlummMeanGreen replied to gangrene's topic in Mean Green Football
Hell, why didn't the Big East take UTSA, then? I'm sorry, but I have to see what several losing seasons in a row does to the Road Runners when they have to sell tickets between losing seasons and that "new car smell" is all gone. Just sayin'... GMG! -
Do you agree with the Homecoming Time Change from 6pm to 4pm?
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
For us to not lose a large portion of our crowd, it was the only option on the table AD/RV had. I am sorry for our fellow alums that 4:00 PM kick-off his screwed up their itineraries, though. GMG! -
Make Saturday A Mean Green/Texas Ranger Double Header
PlummMeanGreen replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Have there been large flat screen TVs at any of our tailgate stations, yet? Just askin'... GMG! -
To answer your question that I bolded and for most of my life since I graduated (and I'll be 61 next month): No... It has been the life long frustration of many of us old alum pharts who could only grin and bare thru all the last few decade's miscues in the hiring department. And worse, they kept many of the bad hires too looooooooooooooong. I think our FB and BB program are in good hands now, though. I prefer the quick turnaround but not all schools have Lady Luck smiling on them in that department, either, and North Texas is not alone in that area. GMG!

Do you agree with the Homecoming Time Change from 6pm to 4pm?
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Just spoke to a former Mean Green player from the Dickey era here at the local McDonald's coffee & "QB" Club and he will be making his first visit to Apogee Stadium with his employer who is also a UNT alum. NOTE: They will be part of the out of town "Homecoming" crowd we usually don't get at other games. I told him about the 4 o'clock kick and he knew nothing about it, he then thanked me for telling him as he will also tell his boss who is going to the game with. He was very excited about coming to Apogee for his first game there. I then showed him some photos of Apogee on my laptop and then he really got excited about coming this Saturday. He could not believe the crowd shot of the Houston game I have as my laptop background photo. I told him it will be the accoustics of Apogee that will be toward the top of his "best thing he likes about Apogee list." Get the word out, North Texas. GMG! PS: I like the earlier time because it gets me home earlier. I have a 2:00 PM Wedding Reception to DJ on Sunday. It surprises me how many Sunday weddings are booked and some booked because many wedding venues are booked a year in advance on Fridays and Saturdays. GMG! -
Again, we've had Mean Green football poster schedules in the past with "Time TBA" for TV purposes. Seems we always found out on the "Monday" before that weekend's game what time we would have a kick-off. Sorry there are some that this will truly affect their Homecoming Game Day attendance.

Make Saturday A Mean Green/Texas Ranger Double Header
PlummMeanGreen replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Good point. -
This has probably been discussed is my guess, but why not we tie-in to the Texas Ranger's success to enhance our own. The 4 o'clock kick-off will already bring more of the locals out the our Homecoming game. It is unfortunate that it will not be conducive to others schedules. Remember many past North Texas football schedules that had : Time TBA (That would be for projected TV games so kick-off times have been announced in the past on (what is today)?..............Mondays But promote it as One Big FB/Baseball Tailgate Event at the Mean Green Village?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qB5jZcF6_Rc OK already, we know that our new stadium is not the Roman Coliseum, but it is "OUR" Roman Coliseum that has impressed many pretty well known outsiders and it will shine O shine O shine at our North Texas Homecoming this weekend. PS: I liked the music score Mr. Maher chose for his videography, too. BTW, is he related to.......................? GMG!

Homecoming traditionally brings in more alums from out of the area and then you have most or all campus organizations that usually play a part (in being seen) at the game. 20,000 to 22,000 only because it is Homecoming. Heck, some Big Time schools like Cincy' of the Big East are only averaging 25K per home game. Can we just use our imagination to project what some winning seasons in Mean Green Country will do to inflate our numbers very quickly to what even some Big East schools are drawing now? I just think North Texas got hit by "the perfect storm" (pardon the pun) in that last home game with some of us in the area who even got up to 6 inches of rain. Denton could have very easily been in that same intense weather path as my area, but we just need our present day North Texas students to develop a new "Apogee culture" whereas 6 or 7 Saturdays every Fall there ain't a gol' darn thing thats going to keep them away from Mean Green football and the Apogee Experience. And whatever the announcement is going to be won't it be great that we have the internet, twitter, etc, to get the word out like no other time before? GMG!

UH'er Said This of B.E.Team UNT Beat In Bowl Game...
PlummMeanGreen replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
And an experiment that I whole-heartedly (with many others) supported 100%. I think we now have gone back to the formula (a former NCAA D1 HFC) that seems to have worked the best for North Texas. I just didn' think I'd be 60 years of age before we would go back to that formula, though. GMG! -
Unbelievable- Benson Still Talking UNT/ULL
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
+1 for that because you are absolutely right and thus the reason that some of us for awhile now have wanted a new conference. I mean isn't the American dream all about improving one's lot in life (or at least it used to be). GMG! -

UH'er Said This of B.E.Team UNT Beat In Bowl Game...
PlummMeanGreen replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
It was the average attendance numbers of both schools,, ie, Cincy's 25K average up till now for this season and the low 20's average attendance for a UH football season in recent years that was the main theme. I don't think I posted about any bowl game being revelant or irrevelant (for that matter) but stated that we did beat a school from the Big East and that happened much more recent than what seems to be the timeline criteria of past success for other schools to get into an AQ conference. Sorry, I still just don't get a bunch of this re-alignment business. GMG! -
For us (UNT) to average anything above 20K this year would be good for a football program that has not had too many winning seasons of late. Lest we forget, the North Texas Metroplex is a major league sports market that has had the "a winner's town" mindset for a long time now. To stay in the 20's, we must have the UNT student body come to games, though. From a ConstructionCoog post on CoogFans.com board Posted: Today 3:11 PM "...Cincinnati is averaging 25K this year and it wasn't that long ago that we (UH) were in the bottom 20s.....

Unbelievable- Benson Still Talking UNT/ULL
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Benson needs to wake up and l look at all this conference re-alignment climate again and attempt to figure out that the 'Belt is probably in a better position to cherry pick his league than he and the WAC are the SBC. Question: Which league has been the most stable the last 10 years? Still doesn't want me to see UNT lose a big opportunity to get in the MWC and (maybe) even whatevers left of CUSA. GMG! -
If there ever will be another AQ conference, I think MWC would have it over CUSA (which will probably have other defectors in due time). Before TCU left MWC (and then Boise, too), the MWC seemed to be positioning themselves for AQ consideration. CUSA never seemed to have that "dream" in their future it seems to me. And with all this fruit basket turnover happening now in realignment, who will be an annual rival to who is the next big question. Rice, UTEP and Tulsa would just about be it for a CUSA regional rival for UNT. Rivals usually come from schools which all time series wins are usually close to being equal. Tulsa would not fit that for us now. GMG!

Sun Belt Needs to Merge With WAC Now!
PlummMeanGreen replied to UNTflyer's topic in Mean Green Football
Our major problem at North Texas is that we apparently don't have well placed media friends, a la Craig James (or elswhere) in high places who have any idea of how to juke and jive our branding into a league without really having done anything to earn it. None of this whatsoever aimed at you, personally, Comet7745 so please don't take it as such but sometimes those of us who have been around these parts a few generations and have followed the DFW college football scene (all schools) most astutely would just like to start seeing the NCAA act for the future's sake instead of the what has or has not happened in the past. SMU proved what it could do or not do in almost 100 years in the SWC with that as such an advantage. UNT can' t beat your past with Doak, Kyle, Dandy, Jerry L, etc,, but we can beat your future no matter what league your school is in. Boise State has been doing that as a non AQ for about a decade now. Attendance numbers no matter how apparently un-researched had nothing to do with this move at all for your school but just more "fill in this slot with this school' lagniape because they were a known commodity 60 years ago. Sorry, this board is used to me belly-aching about SMU so just grin, bare and ignore me. I can handle it! LOL! A DJ first for me: I'm posting as I play dinner music at a huge reunion and at a hotel with WifFi. UNT alum Norah Jones sings as I post. Whoops! Dinner almost done! See ya! GMG! -
First question on thesubject bar was only to focus on the fact that even in the midst of all this present re-alignment insanity the University of North Texas is still strategically sitting pretty as the "only" non AQ school in the North Texas Metroplex and for all of those who are getting their shots in now at UNT based on one game's attendance (how shallow is that) and since those same schools totally ignored posting on their boards this headline: NORTH TEXAS IN NEW FOOTBALL PALACE SETS A CONSECUTIVE 2 GAME ON-CAMPUS ATTENDANCE RECORD TOPPED BY WIN OVER BIG 10 SCHOOL! ....did any of you see that headline on some of our usual detractor's message boards? ...nevertheless, we will be the school that gets in the last shot (not that we would waste our time doing so) because of our location that will favor us. Plus....we now have a premier number of major sports venues that when we get a conference commissioner up to Denton, they will not go away after their tour thinking of any other school that (1) can touch what we have in our Mean Green Village with Apogee Stadium as its crowning jewel and......... (2) nor can they bring the #4 ranked TV market in the USA with them, either. That is our winning combo and then add some winning seasons to that equation which Dan McCarney will and it's all gravy. Apogee Stadium gives us the chance to do what Fout Field never gave any other Mean Green head football coach prior to Coach Mac. We are still building in our post Fouts Field phase of North Texas athletics and considering the last few seasons, averaging over 20,000 REAL BUTTS IN SEATS is not so bad in light of the last several seasons of under .500 records--albeit we know what wins will do to inflate that. Many on this board have not seen a winning Mean Green football program starting with our last few years record-breaking UNT Freshmen classes--can you imagine that group when we do start having winning seasons? The sky will literally be the limit at Apogee Stadium when that happens with all those past Freshmen classes and beyond. Because we know this re-alignment business ain't near over there are 1 or 2 non AQ conferences out there whose Commissioners will eventually be told by those moguls who put their conference TV packages together (and pay for those packages with advertisers they help secure) this... "Commish', your league still needs more significant TV market coverage for our advertisers to be interested in buying what your conference has to offer for those advertisers to want to invest in your conference. I mean they have to know that a significant amount of population in your leagues' footstep are watching their commercials. " GMG!

How about a positive spin on this?
PlummMeanGreen replied to oldguystudent's topic in Mean Green Football
I am racking whats left of my brain cells to come up with any positive spin. It just pisses me off that all this is happening during Apogee Stadium's first year of operation. It seems almost a cruel joke for us to finally, finally, finally have a major college football venue to grow into and then (for the moment) it seems we are having the rug pulled out from under us. I know nothing stays the same, but today is just not one of our school's red letter days if all this comes to fruition from the Big East and the way it is all coming down. GMG! -
Yet 500 to 1,000 for a CUSA game? I mean how many stadium attendants out of that group? Been in this market since 1972 and I know what SMU does as do many others on this board do and even SMU knows what they do with attendance counting, but the Big East seems to not have a clue. I guess they are enamored with having a school in their league who had the very first Death Penalty? I am a long time non- fan of SMU because they remind me of one of those western movie town facades; you know, all the store fronts look great until you go behind all of them to see they are all being held up by 2 x 4's or the like. Smoke & Mirrors U gets another unearned break with this Big East deal and that just my opinion. I know others on this board who are too disgusted to post their thoughts on this another "freeby" for SMU. I do not like that this very undeserving school gets a pass when they shouldn't get a pass. They coat-tailed into CUSA with a multi-year record that would make ours look like we were world-beaters. Sorry, not an SMU fan because of what they do and how they act to most all schools alums/fans (not just UNT) with their condescension. Still a free country to express an opinion, right? GMG!
-
Uh, we're probably screwed with this for the moment, but we should all know by now how these moments seem to change like the Texas weather. Someone will want this market one day and we're the only one who can give it to them. All these 2 leagues have done is merely re-arrange the deck chairs it seems to me or......is there just comfort in numbers for those having to experience misery together? GMG! PS: Just take care of business, North Texas....just like TCU did after about 4 conference memberships gave them what they eventually wanted, but do not do our usual thing and start retreating again. That has us where we are today and have been for over 2 1/2 decades. GMG!

A UH Coog poster who wrote on CoogFans.com about their game in Dallas last Fall might disagree about SMU's TV appeal locally. On the other hand, I guess the DFW TV market would appeal to, uh, at least 500-1,000 area fans wearing red and blue. RE: Why is SMU generally mentioned before us Can't somebody send the Big East a picture of their (Ford) stadium for Homecoming last year??? I mean, they must of had at least 500-1,000 there for our game!! GMG!
