  1. I would think CUSA with 2 Texas schools in it would be a move up; especially with Rice and UTEP being those 2, but how long does UTEP stay in CUSA is the next question. Rice? A trip every other year to Houston could do some very nice things for our recruiting and I don' t care if SMU or UH are in the AQ Big East. http://ncaabbs.com/s....php?tid=525014 Just for fun....vote for the Mean Green! GMG!
  2. Bump.. LaTech is slowly surging as to catch us, but we are stil leading the parade for the moment.
  3. A tram/train could pick up students from east campus starting with Kerr Hall which I presume is still our largest dorm and give those students the joy ride of their lives to Apogee Stadium. Make it like the old run-a-way mine train at 6 Flags Over Texas kind of fun, too, where every sharp turn jarred every tooth in their mouths (and even teeth for some). At North Texas we could make even the student's ride to the football game over the new MG/PB worth their (free) price of admisison. (Sorry, haven't taken my meds, yet). GMG! PS: I really hope they will look at the possibilities of tram/trains because that is even more Game Day enticement for those who really cannot walk far due to age or illness or ....laziness. The liability on such trains as that might be an ender of such an idea, though.
  4. http://www.ntdaily.com/?p=55990 Glad to read the part where AD/RV talks about more pedestrian transportation for tailgater...maybe also tram/trains, too, a la 6 Flags Over Texas? Obviously, that would mean the bridge will be pretty wide to accommodate. More exciting news from campus! GMG!
  5. Thanks gocoogs! Finish strong! GMG!
  6. Gol' darn it! We lose out to that Greater Ruston TV market every time. It ju$t doe$n't make $en$e . GMG! PS: 2 key words with source of that article: Bleacher Report GMG!
  7. http://ncaabbs.com/showthread.php?tid=525014 We know these message board polls are most unscientific, but (still) let these CUSA'ers know that the Mean Green Nation is alive and well. GMG!
  8. Amazing the difference a win can make with attitudes toward our coaching staff. Heck, last week I thought there was going to be a tar & feathering from some. We have a coaching staff in place, now we need to find another 10,000 additional fans who will experience Apogee and just keep coming back the next 40 years. Thanks gman2022, a good and inpiring post from you as a parent of a UNT student and a demographic (parents of UNT students & even alums) that is as important as any in the entire UNT community. Be nice to see more parents of former Mean Green tootball players back in the fold, too, since UNT did take some burden off their financial coffers for 4 or 5 years. (I ran into #11's dad at the Indiana game at half time and had a nice talk with how Scott was doing). GMG!
  9. Coach McCarney came to North Texas with the reputation of being able to build something from scratch. He is still revered at Iowa State for taking an impossible collegiate situation in Ames, IA, and taking that program to 5 bowl games even beating the Iowa Hawkeyes 4 or 5 times, too.. I thought Coach Chico called a good game offensively and once Derek T. slowed down his early game adrenalin rush of throwing passes way out front of the receivers he finally became a Texas gun slinger. Mr. Dunbar seemed many times one ankle tackle from breaking several long runs although he did get that beautiful long TD run during clutch time. Can we win on the road becomes the next question. Looks like WKU who some had penciled in for a win will not be that now after their ULaLa win. The SBC will always have a hard time getting a school inside the Top 25 because we beat up on each other too much.
  10. Years ago at Homecoming frats and sororiies had more of an active part during Game Day half time festivities so as I recall they would show up en mass also giving them a chance to show their usually impressive numbers of members, ie, frats versus frats, sororities versus sororities; but all for the Mean Green come kick-off. There was more involvement from our African American North Texas students who would fill a huge section of Fouts during the Fry Era. Some of the black fraternities put on some pretty darn impressive pre-game walks to where they would sit. It was fun to watch their spirit and involvement in supporting the Mean Green back in the day. All those frats still tailgating during the entire game today might not have had student tickets to even get inside Apothee since they can't use just their UNT student ID bar codes to get in or can they still get student tickets at the ticket windows pre-game? Once North Texas gets more of the old golf cart paths (from our former golf course where Apogee now stands) fixed in the prime tail gate areas maybe in time our school can invest in 2 or 3 long tram trains like they used to have at the huge parking lots at 6 Flags Over Texas. Then a couple of those trains could make a couple extra trips to those still tail-gating at "The Hill" & surrounding areas after kick-off with an "All Aboard" to get some of them away from their kegs and bring them straight to the stadium turnstiles. Of course, we know all are not going to "hop aboard" but at least some might--others may follow and that is just one game plan to solve this problem. The frats many of us saw tail-gating oustide during the entire game today had they come inside the stadium would have filled some holes quite impressively at our Apogee Student Section. I think they may have filled 2 or 3 upper sections of the Apogee Student Sections because there was quite a large number of them tailgating. I think the key is to still get all frats and sororities involved in an active and participating way during every annual Homecoming half time, though. Just sayin'...
  11. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5NYWE0CpvU&feature=player_embedded#! Look at all the real estate near Fouts Field that could be turned into more parking lots if they don't have other plans for that green area. I know they have mentioned a dorm or academic bldg, but there will still be parking areas around those, too. GMG!
  12. Many Call Him The AFL's First Super Star! (the late Lamar Hunt was said to have signed him in the south end zone of Fouts Field--Hunt's widow "Norma" is a UNT grad) Of course, that would be who many of us call friend, ie, the great Abner Haynes: Some of his honors below; *Time Magazine All American (main AA media vehicle of that era) *North Texas Sports Hall of Fame... *Texas Sports Hall of Fame... *Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Honor God let him be at Homecoming today at Apogee! If you meet Abner, you won't forget Abner! http://www.youtube.c...h?v=XH2TrUumi3k NOTE: Dr. Leon King was also part of the this African American duo who came to UNT in the mid 50's to the University of North Texas. Abner has told me and others some stories about that era that would curl your hair if your hair is straight--straighten your hair if its curly. (SUMG and I don't have much hair for either). God Bless the great Abner Haynes and Dr. Leon King! 2 Real Pioneers of the Civil Rights Movement (collegiately) In Texas Which Started At The University of North Texas--truth be known, it should have started in 1890 when our school was established. God Bless Texas! GMG!

  13. Some may be on GMG.com for the first time this week today. Rain coming later so 4:00 PM kick may have been a stroke of luck for our Homecoming Game; don't know how the rain will affect the Rangers WS game, though (if it does at at). GMG! PS: Gol' darn it I love that new stadium & the atmosphere it helps to create! Gil Brandt and Chuck Neinas were right all along about Apogee Stadium!
  14. Thanks for that info, E.R.R. !
  15. That fly-over we had for the North Texas/Navy game at our former stadium is one for the memory bank. Fouts appeared to double in attendance for a few mere seconds with all the extra goose bumps that were breaking out all over after that fly-over. And wasn't it great to talk to some of the Middies' who came to Denton that day? What is traffic on I35-W usually like at bout 12 noon when they have that Air Show ? Anyone?
  16. Is Jerry Moore still their coach or did he retire?
  17. With a 4:00 PM Mean Green kick-off and 7:00 PM(?) Ranger game I don't understand why some of these (perhaps?) WalMart Ranger fans have suddenly become so passionate. I know there are some of you longtime avid Ranger fans who have reason to say what you say and your loyalty is to be admired, but in Game 3 in Arlington if there is a loss there will still be a tomorrow for the Texas Rangers. North Texas' window of opportunity is not as large inasmuch that we only have 5 or 6 home games per Fall to shake and bake at the Apogee Stadium turnstiles. Right now we are on the cusp of not going to be able to sell our product to CUSA or the MWC. Our criteria at UNT is so much more stringent than (obviously) others in the attendance department but.............it is what it is. K1 is right inasmuch (and I'll take it further) that re-alignment powers that be are looking at schools like North Texas and what we are doing in attendance. The 6 inch rain from the non-storm for the FAU game that our opponents message boards are saying shouldn't have been an excuse for the poor attendance quite frankly was a real excuse for some of us who had to contend with the results of 6 inches of water coming down in a small amount of time. I could not attend the game due to limb that fell and created a small hole in the SW part of my abode. I stayed home and emptied water into Sunday AM since I didn't have a ladder or tarp to get on top the roof to take care of it on a temporary basis. Yada-Yada-Yada! Johnny! You Get An "F".... Yet...its like if you make an F on a test of which you then have to make that up with an A just to get back on the radar screen. Well, North Texas needs an "A" for our Homecoming crowd tomorrow afternoon starting at 4:00 PM because of the "weather" game. The 6 inches of rain my part of the Metroplex received could have very easily shot up northward to Denton to have really given UNT students reason to not show up for Apogee Stadium's first official monsoon. Denton avoided the bad part of the storm but our attendance dipped too far south as a result of the chances of what could have happened. We don't have many games left to cover our attendance shortfall truth be known and............with our enormous UNT constituency and community, I am not sure why we have to even have this discussion from time to time. (I know...winning cures cancer and it will probably cure most of our attendance problems, too). GMG!
  18. Craig Thompson of the MWC is like Karl Benson of the WAC.......it's called self-preservation and maybe even a " to hell with any schools outside "MY" league that gets left out in the rain" attitude. I hope the U.S Congress (who needs to butt out of most aspects of American's daily lives) will at least check into what is going on with today's NCAA.
  19. Say that 38 years from now and you will better understand where some of us are coming from. If anyone denies "THE SMU ATTITUDE" then they will run into a concrete wall due to visual impairment. I don't know how it was in the Doak Walker Era since I was not even born even back then, but generations later SMU's arrogance became much more intolerable. Hey, TCU'ers say the say things about SMU so its not just a North Texas 'thang. Main things is many of us from my era till present are mostly tired of seeing Bif''fy Boy's school get all the unearned freebies through apparent and prove-able (by TV cameras) attendance lies and deception when others (not necessarily UNT either) have paid their dues or can bring as much to the table; that's all and I don't think being jealous or envious has anything to do with that, but moreso most who still want.............truth....justice....and the American way, that's all. GMG!
  20. Until we get our parking a bit more simplied (starting with the I35-E glass covered walk way from Fouts to Apogee next Fall), NT should make it as easy as possible for the students since it was (after all) the students who made Apogee Stadium possible for us. Just sayin'... GMG!
  21. What's new pussycat? Anyone read what you haven't already seen or read before with THE SMU ATTITUDE around these parts long before you and many of us came to North Texas or even knew UNT was in Denton--not Denison as I thought early high school years in Greater Houston Town. You ever know a rich kid who had it all from mommy and daddy? Did you ever see them receive (for no earned effort on their part) lets say a brand new XJS Jaguar; then all the neighborhood fellow rich friends pats ol' Bif on the back for "his" accomplishment with even a few high 5's thrown in the celebration for (maybe) a week and then Bif goes back to his usual modus operendi and.....puts his Jag in daddy's estate's 6 car garage because he was already bored with it so again........... it's merely back to business as usual for good ol' "Bif'fy Boy..............That will be SMU in the Big East. That was SMU in CUSA. The Big East? No research from them and just going on somebody's (?) (Craig James of ESPN as the smu front man is my big guess) high fevered sales pitch, their word as good as Fool's Gold and some pretty tall Texas footballs tales thrown in to boot for all the B.E yanks sitting around that huge conference table who were to the person suckered in. Just sayin'...
  22. Large Print Edition For Fellow Seniors: There are strange and outside the box things happening in NCAA conferences now (and I won't go into further detail as to what a particular one is) but with CUSA soon to have no presence in DFW with a member school, how are advertisers of any DFW area CUSA affilate bowl going to react? Who knows, they may not react at all since I'm sure their expectations were probably never high in DFW before because of the local school that represented CUSA. As stated, this would not be the norm for the North Texas and Denton I've gotten to know since 1972 as to be "THIS" proactive (or outside the box), but fellow green-tinted sports fans, utsa and other SBC schools are being talked up about MWC and CUSA as much or more than our school. Are some of you ready to swallow that pill if we get passed by (again) by even an upstart school that has not had to sell tickets between a string of losing seasons yet? You talk about the sound of an F-5'esque rushing wind coming out a very large yet quickly shrinking green balloon if the aforementioned were to happen; that is, even if we were passed over by a freakin' upstart. It would not be a pretty scene around these parts and many of you know this, except for those who want us to hold hands with every Bottom 25 FBS school many just up from another NCAA division , sing kum-bah-ya and just blow off any of our past successful football legacy to be with those who have absolutely no legacy at all; that is, a legacy in the modern times of NCAA college football which most say began in the early 1950's or about the time North Texas integrated the Lone Star State's traditionally caucasian schools with the great Abner Haynes and Leon King. These 2 who along with their teammates took a Mean Green team to the Sun Bowl in 1959. We have to only hope that Apogee Stadium has not become the end-all for North Texas to coast along yet a few more years as we sit around waiting for good things to happen just because of its presence because if that is going to be the case, like the title in the SMU thread Harry posted and from the 'stangs board of which that subject title said: Is North Texas Going To Only Be Disappointed Again? (And not to even elaborate on some of the condescending posts about UNT on the SMU forum) GMG!
  23. and all this for membership in CUSA.... Yes,, quite a bit beyond what we would ordinarily do in Denton, but if we don't get pro-active we will see other schools pass us by, folks, and we don't need that to happen to us anymore. Tell CUSA Commish' Banowosky to move a CUSA sponsored bowl game to Apogee with promise that there will be a: Denton County Bowl Association to be its main sponsor and seeker of a corporate sponsor, advertising, etc, etc, etc. Friday Addendum: Hellsbells! Tell CUSA Commish' Brit Banowsky we will even expand Apogee Stadium another 9,000 seats to get her up to.... 40,000 seat capacity... if that is what it takes? PS: SMU had the audacity to seek Big 12 membership through the media, so why would any of this be so outside the box for us? It would make more sense than SMU's Big 12 pipe dream. GMG!
  24. One thing about it, the Big East has taken serious attendance averages and winning seasons over the last quarter of a century off the table for its criteria; nevertheless and with the Big East apparent criteria for admission which they (with SMU) are going to predicate on the potential card .............then at that point shouldn't it boil down to how large a schools entire constituency (enrollment and alumnus numbers in the market said school is headquartered) and............ which school therefore might just have more potential and (ultimately) more TV sets among its present constituency should be considerred? The Big East criteria includes none of the aforementioned. North Texas still has a ways to go, but even when we finally hit it with all pistons running but using the Big East criteria to add schools, it is most obvious they could care less for schools meeting the criteria of any of the schools they lost to the ACC. Our timing in all this is (as usual) kicking our A$ but would it really matter anyhow? It will with CUSA or the MWC who will probably use stronger criteria than the Big East to add schools if they add any at all. Remember Old Hiring Practices of Days Gone By? The Big East did like many employers used to do when they hired on one's reputation; that is a reputation they've taken as truth from someone elses biased feelings trying to get their friend a job. Yet with that potential new employee who might have slipped dramatically in recent years to the degree of ineffectiveness? Yet the employer w/o checking that person's resume' hires them anyway and will find out later they what they really have done (for better or worse) once that employees is on the payroll. IMO, SMU cannot touch North Texas and our entire athletic plant much of which is based at the Mean Green Village with Apogee as our shining new buckle. Ford Stadium vs. Apogee? Close contest but Gil Brandt has already give us his papal blessing on Apogee as a cut above all similar sized stadiums; the Super Pit vs Moody Coliseum? No comparison even with enhancements that both schools have given their respective BB venues. Minor Sports? The Big East did not admit any new schools on minor sports. Case in point? Boise State will be a "football only" B.E school. All the North Texas selling points below not many schools (and even some projected to become new members in the Big East) just cannot equal. * North Texas Is The 4'th Largest University In Texas (projected from studies by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Austin, to become the 2'nd or 3'rd largest university in the Lone Star State). ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Our Opponents Have Convenient Airport Access To The UNT Campus : *DFW Airport: 35 minutes from UNT campus *Alliance Airport (near TX Motor Speedway) 20 minutes from UNT campus ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It's A Numbers Game--Always Has Been .
