And did I read that SBC Commish' Karl Benson just instituted a $5 million exit fee for SBC school wanting to leave? I don't know if that is grand'fathered or just for new members

Hell, I'd venture a guess that most our students don't know that much about North Texas own athletic history and legacy, but that only means they will need to be educated from top to bottom on all of this IMO. Ask a UNT student today (or even from the last 10 years) if they knew that their school had actually one time beat a 6 & 5 Southeast Conference back in the day and you'd probably get a..........."you're kiddin' about that, right?" Best part of CUSA is also for Denton County and Denton Newcomers who will read in the Denton Record-Chronicle in the future the headline: "North Texas Hosts Tulane U At Apogee Stadium" and said newcomer then ask his kids: "You kids want to go out and see that real nice looking football stadium we pass by every day and see North Texas play Tulane this evening? I understand that they have lots of fun things for kids to do at their pre-game tailgating, too." GMG!

And a hearty congrats back to yall, too, J.L. and La Tech! We just love to hate yall (but only in the spirit of an intercollegiate rivalry, of course).

No, this is not our battle but....... indirectly it is because a stronger Tulane (who was once in the SEC) means a stronger CUSA which means a stronger North Texas. This thread came from a similar thread on the CUSA fan board but we can give Tulane U a little Mean Green love by helping them fight their own version of Denia'ites (who seem to have become good sports with UNT now). Takes about a minute to fill out the voting info, so please click the below link and take that minute to help a fellow CUSA'er reach their goal of 2,000 names before this day is out. http://www.thepetiti...tulane-stadium/

ODU may not be done: MTSU could be replacement?
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I need to take my motion sickeness pills! DAMN! Good luck, MUTS! GMG! -
This came from the CUSAbbs board so it got started there. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/679/532/399/in-support-of-tulane-stadium/ I know this sounds crazy, but some in NO's are trying to block the rights for Tulane U to build their new football stadium. Many out of staters (including myself) have already signed their petition. So help a fellow CUSA'er get their on-campus football stadium jump-started. Seems Tulane U has their own version of a Denia neighborhood.

Texas State Fans discuss move to Belt

IMO.......North Texas will need to play OOC games with mid major schools some of whom are: (1) in and out of Top 25 polls (2) ranked anywhere from #15 to #25 (which will probably not be a mid major program most times) or (3) are consistent Top 25 vote getters almost breaking into the Top 25 annually. We will be playing enough Texas or regional teams in CUSA as it is so if we want out-of-Texas or non-Southwest region media poll votes we need to play schools in other states or regions. If we want to dip down with our schedule we should have stayed down where we we've been of late, gather round the campfire and sing kum bah yah with all those we've been trying to distance ourselves from for quite awhile now. Being SMU'esque snobbish here? No, we're not and MeanGreenTexan gives a good reason as to why that is not the case. Its just a case of UNT needing to advance itself as we should have done about 25 or so years ago. The OOC schedule should (for the most part) be stronger than most of the upper tier CUSA schools we'll already have on our schedule most years because if that is the case we then the Mean Green has a legitimate chance for Top 25 rankings. GMG! GMG! -
You're the one who coined that, Deep? Gol' darn, I was sitting next to royalty at one of our games last Fall and didn't even know it! How are all the don's down in Sicily doing by the way? GMG!

Who do you see as North Texas' future rival in CUSA?

My gosh! Has GoMeanGreen.com ever had as much buzz as today? GMG! -
Great post, Emmitt! I'm getting so worked up now I may run down I-20 adorned by only my apple green speedos! (This "run" reserved only for special moments in Mean Green athletic history, of course). What a great day for all of us and guess what fellow Mean Green elect and UNT alums.....It's our time now because we all deserve this ! GMG!

Methinks this was more of an olive branch for ECU and (maybe) even Marshall from the CUSA HQ's here in the Metroplex. ODU has that great basketball legacy for sure. CUSA powers that be are thinking outside the box on this one and that is quite refreshing. GMG!

CUSA has schools that have been ranked and with a good team or 2 will most likely continue to get such votes but....the Sun Belt still has not overcome that bug-a-boo one time and I don't know how soon they will. GMG!

Looks like we just added some much needed stock to the basketball part of the conference, too. Is this heaven or Iowa? GMG!

CBS11 BREAKING: UNT to CUSA (FRIDAY!)
PlummMeanGreen replied to UNTflyer's topic in Mean Green Football
For those of us who were students or fans back in the day....this. Hayden Fry took us out of the Missouri Valley Conference which still had schools like Louisville and Memphis as members was because it would be easier to apply and (hopefully) gain entrance into the Southwest Conference as a Major Independent than a member of the lowly Missouri Valley Conference (as it was looked on as a football conference). Fry was light years ahead of most with his ability to think forward than continually using the past as his main reference point (which we did quite well in Denton and still do to an extent). All in Denton and beyond (except the Teacher's College crowd) were behind Fry's decision to make this move. The MVC Commish' during this time, ie, Mickey Holmes was furious with Fry, but what Holmes seemed to be naive about was how Louisville and Memphis had similar plans and would also leave his conference soon after. Best I can tell, the Metro Conference did not form until Fry was well into his Big 10 years at Iowa. And if Fry had still been around, North Texas would have never seen one day as an NCAA D1-AA program.....I repeat...........not one day. From Wikopedia: The Metropolitan Collegiate Athletic Conference, popularly known as the Metro Conference, was an NCAA Division I athletics conference, so named because all of its charter members were in urban metropolitan areas in, or at least on the fringes of, the Southern United States. The conference never sponsored football, although most of its members throughout its history had Division I-A football programs (from 1983-91, all Metro schools had independent football programs). In 1995 it merged with the Great Midwest Conference to form Conference USA. The merger was driven mainly by football, as several Metro Conference members had been successfully lured to larger conferences that sponsored the sport. -
Each CUSA school would be wise to schedule more OOC schools that will help us to continue to raise the CUSA tide so all our ships can rise together. It's a different era in today's NCAA, folks, and we owe nothing to anyone who wants to coat-tail off all of our school's future successes. TCU should have taught us all a lesson in creating a sense of exclusitivity and not being obnoxious about it at the same time. GMG!

Who do you see as North Texas' future rival in CUSA?
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Best part of all this is that we will have many potential heated rivals in our division and that is why many of us for almost half a century wanted in a league with more Texas schools and some great non-Texas schools. We now have our cake and ice cream! What a great day this is. AND................how many conferences do you know that has "3" schools whose primary color is green? GMG! -
Lets see now... There are almost 7,000,000 citizens in our DFW backyard; There are almost 700,000 citizens in Denton County (of which 120,000 live in Denton) There will be almost 37,000 UNT students this Fall There are well over 100,000 NT alums in DFW (one campus publication even says 209,000 who attended UNT at least 1 semester) And...................... putting 31,000 Mean Green fans inside Apogee Stadium is a problem? GMG!
-
North Texas now has a built-in home schedule for the most part with our new conference mates. North Texas needs to take care of North Texas. If we are going to get a ranking, we need to play OOC games that will help us get a ranking and it doesn't take a rocket scientiest to figure out what kind of opponents those will need to be. Now if we want to dip down--we should have stayed down (and that's all I'm going to say about that). We have our stadium...we have our conference....now lets get back to the better days of our prior NCAA Divison 1 existence and kick some ASS again--but even at a higher level this time! GMG! But as far as the present is concerned....let's CELEBRATE!

Here Are Some Schools We Have More All Time Wins Than Losses.......(Also counted schools we're tied with for wins and losses, too). Boise State Colorado State Texas Tech U of Houston Oregon State U of Florida Indiana U of Louisville U of Cincinnati U of Tennessee U of New Mexico Fresno State Ball State * Plus some SBC schools that we have more wins than losses NOTE: I'm not sure (on the link below) that they counted our wins/losses against schools when we were NCAA 1-AA for a period of about 12 years, though. . http://www.mcubed.ne.../nt/index.shtml GMG!

Texas State Fans discuss move to Belt
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm trying to remember what TSU-SM was doing back when (1) ...UNT All American (NCAA D1 I might add) Abner Haynes led his Mean Green team to the Sun Bowl and as a NCAA D1 program in the 50's? (2) ...Also trying to remember what the Bobcats were were doing when North Texas was in the midst of the Mean Joe Greene era in the 60's of which we even had a team that broke the Southwest Conference ABC TV lock with their always getting the weekly ABC=TV regional telecast when the North Texas versus Tulsa U was televised (instead) in the entire Southwest? (3).... I'm trying to also recall what LBJ's alma mater was doing in football (and at which NCAA or NAIA level) the day the Mean Green beat the University of Tennessee in the 70's and then that feat making the front page of the Dallas Times-Herald the next morning with a large photo acompanying the big story? Again, what was TSU-SM doing during all that time? (4) .....and this list "what were they doing when...." could be much longer but... TSU-SM's sense of entitlement without having to go thru all the years and decades of a baptism of fire that UNT and many other schools have had endure is undeniable. _______________________________________________________________________ TSU-SM is doing all that they are doing now because of Dennis Francione being their HFC and because of their having wanted to pass us by for quite awhile and right now that is not going to happen athletically, plus...I don't see it happening in all other phases of academia, either, with comparative academic programs. The San Marcos-based school has a fine stadium but they really should have tried to figure out a way to remove the track and lower the field since they will not be re-locating their stadium any time soon plus.............. how many D1 schools have tracks in them any more? Lowering the field would have helped with their accoustics (crowd noise). I've been to a couple games there and listened to a damn train couple times in one of those games that seemed it was running somewhere underneath the stadium while drowing out the crowd noise (Ask former UH Coach Kevin Sumlim about the crowd noise at UNT's Apogee Stadium--it apparently caused him and his Coog team to go into a mild state of shock initially because we were so loud (until they made their adjustments). I love TSU-SM's new end zone and would trade them for HKS architect firm's end zone idea for Apogee in a New York minute, but for the whole stadium package of them versus us there is no comparison, especially when you add to the equation of our stadium's strategic location between the 2 Texas interstates. Speaking of stadium location: Apogee fits like a glove inside our Mean Green Village with all our other varsity sports venues now there and those that will be built later on. Can you tell when older stadiums have had add-ons to an existing stadium? I know I can. Apogee was built with expansion in mind, but with an expansion that will be a perfect blend to what we have already. GMG! -
Seems to not be much that makes that eastern CUSA group happy at any time, too. GMG!

But for what its worth their video indoor practice facility seemedly had lots of green in it and even for a video game looked damn nice if such a facility as seen in that NCAA Football video could happen one day. AND......haven't we of UNT all seen initial architectural renderings for some of our future facilities with far less detail than the one shown in that game video? GMG!
