RV got the job because he met the qualifications for our AD job when hired--not because he was Latino. Now to celebrate him for being a Latino who was chosen from numerous applicants and he being the one who got our AD job is the real reason to, uh....celebrate, IMHO. Nevertheless, congrats for the award, RV. GMG!

BCS is dead: Presidents approve college playoff
PlummMeanGreen replied to UNTeagle88's topic in Mean Green Football
Jack, do you think an 8 team play-off would make much difference for the Cinderellas? (Or any other poster who has a HSO on this). GMG! -
Happy Birthday, Bill! 39 again? GMG!

BCS is dead: Presidents approve college playoff
PlummMeanGreen replied to UNTeagle88's topic in Mean Green Football
A 4 team play-off gives those choices to the NCAA good ol' boys network, but an 8 team play-off would re-introduce Cinderella into the mix once again. I think college football fans are intrigued by the Cinderella effect, too. Best bowl game I've still seen of late is the Boise State/OU Fiesta Bowl game a few years ago. IMO, a 4 team play-off pretty well eliminates future Cinderellas because strength of schedule would be the killer every time and that is what the committee will look at the most following the W/L records. Zac Orr & The Redskins Helmet-Really?
PlummMeanGreen replied to DeepGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Have no idea on that, but over the last 24 hours I have become a Redskin fan. Redskin & Proud of It! GMG! PS: Ol' ugly is better than ol' nothing. (Darrell K. Royal) -
Zac Orr & The Redskins Helmet-Really?
PlummMeanGreen replied to DeepGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
A plain green helmet would have even sufficed and not one with 10 letters on it with the snap end of a chin strap covering half a letter. This was a mass advertiser for the North Texas community and constituency. IMO...not a time to get cute'sy. Maybe a feature story inside the magazine with that Redskin helmet photo would have been a better choice. It's done...nothing can change it now. It made today's GMG.com news cycle for sure & this thread will probably be on Page 2 by the end of this week. GMG! -

With Francione I wouldn't automatically say blowout because when he settles down and decides he wants to stay at a job...........he can do a pretty good job of coaching. Quite frankly, I was impressed with all the 3 star recruits Coach Fran got as rated by Scout. Of course, you never know how 3 star recruits will translate at the FBS level. TSU-SM's problems are going to be the ones they (basically) inherit from us IMHO. They will have no SBC football rivals in the Lone Star State (among other scheduling problems I perceive they are going to have, but on the upside their AD seems to not want to back down on who they schedule with their OOC games in San Marcos). And congrats on the DCTF ink, TFLF! Hey, ink inches is ink inches. And welcome to Mean Green Country, Mr. Wiliams. We are very happy that you have put our school in your near future plans. GMG!

Amazing that former Mean Green QB the late Steve Ramsey is still the only one we've ever had that was drafted by the NFL (Denver Broncos). Of course, I'm sure we're not alone in that dept but those Louisiana schools (not LSU) most of whom we played the last 3 decades had some good ones of which a handful even played in the NFL. Bradshaw (although we never played an NCAA D2 La Tech in that era), Stan Humphries, Bubbie Brister, etc..... GMG!

Thoughts and Prayers go to Rick Spears aka "Green Grenade"
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Rick, sorry to hear of Margie's passing. I enjoyed knowing her and talking to her on many occasions before she got real sick. Call when you need a friend to talk to. Jim -
Hate to do so but I'm afraid I'm going to have to agree with you 100% percent, Eagle1855. McCarney's former boss and role model Fry had a very poor 2'nd year at UNT with only 2 wins. His 3'rd year was one for the record books and got him talking up SWC membership for North Texas The Belt' has had plenty of one hit wonders who were near or at the bottom going to near or to the top from one season to the next and I hope that is what we do in our final season in the SBC and go out as a winner. NOTE: As GrandGreen posted, UL was predicted to be last in most of the magazines last Summer and all they did was win the SBC with a trip to the NO's Bowl which they most impressively won. Recruiting in Year 2 with Apogee Stadium as our football palace needs to be close to or as good as we've had in Mean Green Country if that is at all possible. Our future QB after the 2013 inaugural year in CUSA is most likely a Texas HS senior this Fall, but our recruiters need to make sure this new QB recruit-to-be will have some Rivals pedigree about him plus it will be great for him to have our present QB DerekThompson for him to under-study for the 2013 season, too. (We can still hold out all hope that we can get a quality NCAA FBS QB transfer this next year who would be ready when D.T. graduates after 2013.... or in other words.......we are nowhere near the panic stage for a QB to follow Thompson's footsteps and who knows that QB may even already be on campus). Hopefully, we get out of the SBC starting blocks very quickly this Fall and maybe even have enough "W's" to contend for a bowl game, but if the season goes south rather quickly for whatever the reason it wouldn't hurt if our staff tried to red-shirt those who would still be elgible for our immediate future in CUSA which getting a good start in that league most of us would agree is essential....but again.......only if we have a dismal SBC W/L record after a few conference games this season should they consider doing that. UTSA brings College Football To San Antonio
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Read somewhere that because Dallas can no longer annex land and population (and Fort Worth still can) that Cowtown will also be larger than Big D in due time. Jerry Jones tried to help Big D by returning his team within their city limits with a nice new stadium and other nice investments in the Fair Park area, but former Mayor Laura Miller would have no part of that. Hotel and Conference Center "Deal in the Works"
PlummMeanGreen replied to UNTLifer's topic in Mean Green Football
I would still think the investors of this hotel/convention center would want the Mean Green Village location because of what will be those proposed venue's access to Apogee Stadium and the Super Pit. I think that may allow Denton to get a few prime conventions that merely a hotel and convention center sitting separate somewhere off Scripture Street or the Rayzor Ranch land would allow. The new pedestrian bridge now being constructed over I35-E is the icing on the cake for all this to be built at the MG Village, but who knows where it ends up. GMG! -

This is a move that is equally as much about the 2013 season as much as it is the one upcoming IMO. In the back of his mind, I'd wager Coach Mac is getting this program ready for our CUSA's inaugural season and McDorman is just anothe piece of the puzzle to meet that objective. I still wish Coach Mac would not completely abandon the JUCOS and maybe even find us a few Michael Pruitts out there to plug into some much needed areas like DL has become without the depth and all. (Of course, Mike Pruitt did much more than just plug into our defensive line back in the day). GMG!

Hotel and Conference Center "Deal in the Works"
PlummMeanGreen replied to UNTLifer's topic in Mean Green Football
To answer your articles question: No, it is not time to quit building hotel and conference centers and especially those that have 31,000 & 10,000 seat facilities adjacent to them..................like UNT's will have. Apogee Stadium and the Super Pit would make Denton's future hotel and conference center most unique to some groups who may very well need a larger venue for their mass meetings during a (lets say) 3 or 4 day event. A convention lasting 3 or 4 days coming to Denton is what some would call one helluva' cash cow for local merchants (and other local hotels as well). I was not there in person, but photos I saw of Promise Keepers with the enormous numbers they had Fouts Field made our Ol' Lady about as full as I'd ever seen her, yet they had smaller meetings prior to their mass meetings elsewhere in the city of Denton as I recall reading their agenda. Still, they needed a college football stadium to hold their mass meetings. GMG! -
Big East On The Outside ? No Longer Part Of The Group
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Life's a gamble. It may all turn out alright for those concerned and then again it may not. -
I rememember back in the day when we first got SMU back on our schedule in the NCAA 's modern era (circa, 1974) how many times after those games were played how the rest of the season seemed anti-climatic to some extent. CUSA with the regionalized division we will be in will give us many home and away games starting in 2013 which will create so much more interest for conference games than we have now that playing schools not far from Denton will create. It will also be fun to have more than 1 conference opponent that come to Apogee who will bring 2,000 and more fans to Denton, too. That sorta' thing just spices up a college football game IMO. And won't most of our CUSA division school's be bringing their marching bands most years, too?

Hudspeth Has Cajuns On Track For Gridiron Greatness
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
UL has not had enough long term success to be compared to any school now, but they sure do draw football fans when they win. Their first major goal to accomplish rather than being the next Boise should be to try to be the first school in SBC history to get a Top 25 ranking. Of course, were they to do that then the Boise comparisons would be forth-coming. GMG!- 17 replies
