  1. Has anyone mentioned the late, great Texas Pickup near West Hall (before they tore it down)? Their Redneck Muther' hamburgers and cheese fries were for certain "widow makers" but darn tasty! Their chips and hot sauce weren't so bad, either. Also, the State Club near Fry Street was also good in its hey-day. Remember their chicken tenders? GMG!
  2. GL2Greatness, please take this question as a most sincere one with nothing between the lines or any kind of attempt at a "gotcha" scenario but.............what could possibly happen to the University of North Texas that would give you the most joy and satisfaction since most all your posts are like reading chapter after chapter of what might be your latest literary entry (if you were an author, that is) which could easily be titled: "Why I Am Having Such Joy Watching Anyone From The UNT Constituency Squirm In Their Batan Death March?" Most of us on GMG.com square up with each other whether on this forum, a private message or even an occassional phone conversation with our most of the time agreeing to disagree (and sometimes even actually agree) but still parting as friends post communications or phone conversation....but your non-stop dark agenda on the subject of UNT and/or UNT athletics is quite the mystery. I know to answer the above question with a full disclosure would take much of your mystery away from this forum and thus your having no real reasons to stay, but surprise us all and give us even just 1 subtle hint as to why you hate UNT so much. To quote the great Ross Perot...."we're all ears."
  3. So after reading an apparent TSU-SM alum's manifesto above, is it time for North Texas to raid the Home of Aquarena Spring's favorite campus of their more talented administrative staff at the top and endowment coffer fundraisers, too? And that because during our 30 year (give/take) sleep they seemed to have put their "teacher's college" status behind them much more effectively than others and even as a non-Texas university system school? They are raising funds for one campus while, uh, we seem to be doing so for campuses in Dallas, Fort Worth and then...............Denton. God only knows how many times their present TSU-SM Bobcat HFC, ie, one Dennis Francione has wanted the same job at North Texas even over, uh, TSU-SM back (the first time) when we chose to hire Dennis Parker instead and with Coach Fran even getting turned down by UNT at least twice last count) so might we get lucky with some of their top administrators in San Marcos, too, like for starters.... ........just who is the TSU-SM president who seems to have led them past UNT in some key areas even as what the most recent figures suggest are their annual research monies, too? (Coach Fran? For certain I'm still fine with our present HFC in Denton as I think he is the one who takes UNT out of the NCAA wilderness and also one who will not dummy down our expections or re-define what a successful NCAA FBS level football program truly is and I defer to a recent Top 25 ranked football program located in Ruston, LA.). While North Texas Slept (not a Pulitzer Prize winning book yet unfortunately written by all of us with UNT ties) with seemed non-stop praise from a few on this forum for what would not be acceptable performers and performances even in the town of San Marcos, Texas)..............yet that period of sleeping by our school in what is obviously too many under-performances in most important areas of a school's true barometer of success. And for our school has it not been a most expensive venture while others seemed to have passed us by if we can (still) believe some of the figures we read and some of those from our best Google researching? Yet it seems that the numbers we now read and a Texas public university's endowment coffer totals still never lie. We have to have at least $400 million of an endowment (as I understand the most recent list of criteria) to pass what a few of you have said would be the final barrier for UNT to become a Tier 1 Research outfit and still..... we are even behind TSU-SM in that department, too. AGAIN....who North Texas hires as its new main campus president will be important in more ways than one. Our school at this point in its history cannot afford to hire a "this makes no sense or cents" hire during this hiring cycle. SO....DO I HEAR AN AMEN? Of course not because this poster like a few others never follows the usual UNT company line of what seems to be unadulterated bullshit too many times. We can take a steaming bowl of dog caca on this board at times and turn it into banana pudding so we all eventually have to ask this question to ourselves as in: WHO THE HELL DO WE THINK WE ARE KIDDING? My blood sugars down so time to take the meds!
  4. I hope when all the smoke clears North Texas will sign Nick Orr so there is the possibility of having another Orr in the North Texas Athletic Hall of Fame which is where his older brother will be in time. GMG!
  5. UNTLifer, you might want to ask SUMG that one as he is (somewhat) a regular customer of the Ranchmans. Glad to know they went back to their old name, too.
  6. Thanks for that great find, Harry. "Pete" did tell me that Warren Beatty was with Faye Dunaway one particular afternoon. They filmed the "no money in the bank" scene at the Ponder State Bank which is owned by a Denton County acquaintance of mine (or last I heard it was). Pete also told me Ms. Dunaway got on top one of the tables with a rose between her teeth and did a little fancy dancin' for the crowd. Funny how I can visualize Faye Dunaway doing just that, too. I have a copy of Bonnie and Clyde with outtakes and movie notes and even Warren Beatty holding up a newspaper (Harry Truman style) with headlines saying "World Premier of Bonnie and Clyde In Denton, Texas!" GMG!
  7. We really, really need more meat on the hoof in our DL recruiting. Not sure why we don't sit on defensive linemen from JUCO's door steps and recruit coast to coast for DL's if we need to since most of the HS blue chip DL's mostly want to go to Big Boys U. GMG!
  8. You know we just only recently built a new football stadium during the worst economic time in the USA since the Great Depression that would most likely cost a minimum of $100,000,000 to $125,000,000 to build today. Thanks UNT students and private financeers for that. No, it's not enough compared to others, but those other school's leaders have not asked their respective student bodies to build and significantly fund a new college football stadium from scratch, either. Isn't it easy to believe this UNT BOR's will not leave this UNT athletic dept. at the train station and will vote for graduated student fee increases the next however long it takes to catch up and most likely pass the ones we know this needs to happen with? Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out, but who we get as our new main campus president will be very important for the continued upgrading of a program that has been 25 years behind in quality athletic venues across the board save the Super Pit. GMG!
  9. Fry Street? I lived at 316 Fry Street (University House Apts when they were quite nice) when I first transferred from Alvin JUCO to UNT in January, 1972. I didn't know whether to walk to class as a visually impaired person with a cane to mostly be my protector from the drug culture or to dress as a priests (collar and all) with a big vampire killer of a cross adorning my neck and a string of garlic hanging from my trousers pocket just in case. It was a real freaky Fry Street back then but consider the era, too........ the Viet Nam war was winding down........Tricky Dicky Nixon was up to his shenanigans but at least he did make a triumphant trip to China (but what a waste of a brilliant mind R.M. Nixon truly had but chose the dark side to use it)and girls were all following Gloria Steinam's lead while losing their bras. When I arrived for my first class at UNT (an English Class with Dr. Malcom Chamberlain) my head would still be in wobble mode from watching all those long haired surfer girls who I would pass by en route to class. University House had a very popular swimming pool where I saw scenes I'd never seen in my Texas one horse home town and those summer time scenes were such a treat. Some things you can just never get our of your mind (although you know you should especially now at my present age and health). The Ranchmen's Steak House (now Ponder Steak House) was popular with my little group. And talking to the older lady named "Pete' who ran the place was like a trip down memory lane. She had such good stories about Warren Beatty and Fay Dunaway who ate there while filming Bonnie and Clyde and Pete's home-made caramel cream pies were to kill for. GMG
  10. Not exactly a good time to be a defector, Cougar King. A Drone...
  11. 99.9% of the NCAA at its present highest level have season ticket sales and fund-raising toward the top of their criteria for success. Not sure how much long term scheduling has to do with any AD's tenure. If success in doing that provides for bonuses, then the UTSA A.D. should be able to retire in the next 2 or so years based on a very impressive home schedule she has scheduled for the AlamoDome. If our AD Rick V's staff cannot improve on season ticket sales (a la CUSA newcomer ODU's phenomena in that dept.) and fundraising, then he needs to make some drastic changes and I think most would agree with that. I want Rick V to succeed as our AD no matter whats been said by many of us in the past out of utter frustration because if he does then that means "all is well on the northern front" and our alma mater's athletic program is hopin' and rockin' because after all..........isn't what we all want for "OUR" school? GMG!
  12. This TV thing for the Mean Green football program is exceeding most all our expectations and much sooner than I thought it would happen! Anyone missing the Sun Belt now? This is just more for Coach McCarney and staff to build on! GMG !
  13. Phil Steeles summer edition is out today and has us tied for 4'th with La Tech in the CUSA West Division. Phil Steele has Brock Berglund as our starting QB. In fact, his staff of writers/researchers has North Texas going to a bowl game with some formula they used. GMG! Totally Unrelated Dept. Like good healthy popcorn? Then get "Skinny's Popcorn" at Sams Club or Walgreens..........0 sugar, 0 carbs and only 50 grams of sodium and believe it or not...........it tastes unbelievably great! We Type 2'ers have to count all that stuff!
  14. More off season Mean Green football fat to chew on... Hear Me Out Here: As far as the CUSA West Division goes what if all 4 UNT players that Phil Steele picked on his various 2013 All CUSA Offense teams all played at an All CUSA "First Team" level which begs another question: In CUSA just how much difference of quality do you really lose from 1'st team to 4'th team All CUSA? Yet in a perfect college football world which we sometimes have in any Summer before 2-a-days on message boards; but with those "4" from UNT who very well could have 1'st Team All CUSA performances can North Texas with all our transfers, true Frosh and RS frosh find 7 more to complement those 4 CUSA All Stars wearing Mean Green? Defense? A much bigger stretch here. What if all 3 UNT players Phil Steele has on his various 2013 All CUSA Defense Teams performed at a 1'st Team level as well; then (again) with our 8 NCAA FBS level transfers, true Frosh and RS Frosh coming in to Fall Camp, can we find 8 more out of that group to complement the 3 that Steele had on various All CUSA Defense teams? Yes, the DL will be our burr under our saddle if we don't patch it up best we can but you know Abbe will be re-instated and maybe 1 or 2 offensive line prospects move over to the DL too. In fact, who would be the main prospect we have coming in to do that ? http://www.philsteele.com/All_Conference/2013/2013_Preseason/CUSA.html
  15. Listed in the 2 links below was Athlons and College Football News (Scout) 2011 college football magazines predictions for the Sun Belt Conference. Easy to say they missed it considering the school both polls picked "next to last" won the conference and had a very successful New Orleans Bowl appearance, too. (And didn't North Texas beat that same 2012 bowl bound school on an ESPN national televised game in the Fall of 2012....as in last football season)? Athlons 2011 Prediction: #9 http://www.athlonsports.com/college-football/athlons-2011-sun-belt-predictions CFN's 2011 Prediction: #9 http://cfn.scout.com/2/1090741.html North Texas, 2013: Easy to see that Athlon's predictors do not include the Mean Green football players that most on this board know must develop to keep us out of their #6 West Division ranking so................"IF"..........most of that group actually develop (coupled with a few new surprise player contributions from a talented Frosh, RS Frosh and 8 NCAA FBS level Transfers) then I think we rise up the 2013 CUSA West Division totem pole admirably. (I also think 1 or 2 C-USA schools who are getting good rankings for Fall 2013 based on last Fall's success might be in for a disappointment, too). As they say....that's why they play the game. A fair number of posters on this message board have said McCarney has really only had 2 full recruiting season classes (coupled with his burgeoning Senior Days program which was hardly in place before or right after he was hired at UNT; that is, until he implemented Senior Days as a vital part of his UNT recruiting agenda). Some of us have said Year 3 (2013) would be Coach Mac's official coming out party in Mean Green Country with a team that could at least break even or even go above .500, but from what we've seen with his well attended Senior Days, ie, with "400" H.S. seniors who were at Apogee Stadium last week with others planned might our future look brighter than it's been in a long time?..................Also, might the upcoming recruiting class (the Winter, 2014 class) possibly take him over the top giving Coach Mac the solid foundation he's so wanted to catapult North Texas back into winning seasons? With our U of Iowa-graduated & self-professed Fry disciple Mean Green HFC some alums/fans see the glass as half full and some as half empty but with Coach Dan McCarney I see the glass slowing filling up toward the top. A College Football Novices Forecast: I think North Texas will finish in the Top 3 of the CUSA's West Division based on who we have coming back along with all the new additions and also based on what some of our competitors in CUSA's West Division don't have coming back. GMG!
  16. We will have a running game by a committee of running backs so how's about a two-QB system? Not most of ours preference but since we're still weeks from the Idaho game something to kick around on this thread. Best case would be that Derek Thompson's last year of elgibility would be a real career year for him while we'd still have 2 under-studies who would still be...studying. If Brock Bergland's talent takes off like a rocket during 2-a-days then many would say all bets would be off for a 2-QB system. Yet what will Brock Berglund do his first Fall in Denton? Any fortune tellers out there? He had some nice Rivals and Scout recruiting service rating stars. Lets see if those rating stars translate as a leading CUSA QB as we all hope they will. How many of us early on saw former Mean Green QB Scott Hall developing at the level that he did? Hall led the Mean Green to a 52-14 Fouts Field win over the Big 12’s Baylor, and lost only a single Sun Belt game in his career. Only one other QB in school history led the Mean Green in passing four years. Hall will always be remembered fondly by the Mean Green Nation as not just a great quarterback, but a winner. From the not always reliable B.R. but they do offer some food for thought on the subject of a 2-QB system: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1533026-10-college-football-programs-that-should-run-a-2-qb-system There are three good reasons to run a two-quarterback system and one bad one: 1. You have two great quarterbacks with different styles of play. (Good) 2. You have no idea how your quarterbacks play in real games, and you need to find out before you commit to one. (Good) 3. You have a great quarterback and a good one, but the great one is leaving soon. (Good) 4. Both your quarterbacks are terrible, and you really are just grasping at straws to find a win. (Bad) GMG!
  17. OK....here is that video as promised.... The opening scenes showing KSU's W/L stats before Snyder arrived are mind-blowing. Folks, it will soon be "OUR" time.
  18. And they will bring great German food and beer to the Mean Green tailgate gatherings, too.
  19. Good one, Marty! After all of ours major disappointment with MG basketball with a true NBA talent on last season's team, many of us have gotten very gun shy as to get too optimistic about many things concerning UNT athletics, but for the life of me I am feeling good about Coach McCarney and what he is doing with the football program. Many of us have now gotten to the level of almost zero tolerance with future W/L records in Denton being above .500 or else.... and that because of our having so few winning seasons in football since 1970 (and I will not list the numbers on that)........... .............but if some things fall in place this Fall for our UNT football team we could possibly even have the kind of season the U of L Rajun Cajun had in the 'Belt 2 years ago when they were picked by pre-season football magazines to finish last in football yet went on to win the SBC, go to the NO's Bowl and then beat the MWC's San Diego State Aztecs in a very exciting game. I realize many don't much believe that similar Cinderella stories could happen in Denton because of what losing has done to make us a jaded, but maybe we just all need to start believin' in the Mean Green once again? As bad as its been, North Texas football never got as bad as this Big 12 school as seen on the YouTube video:
  20. Another new logo and shade of green at North Texas? Party Like A Rock Star, babee-eeee!
  21. That really does seem to be the formula, Eagle1855 GMG!
  22. Sir Nitpicker, you are running out of productive posts and sensible responses. So since this is my last response to anything you will ever posts, care to share with the rest of GMG.com what your agenda truly is other than being the self-appointed Grammar Patrol ? Bye... ragpicker: REMOVED! GMG!
  23. Come on ragpicker, I've had many more posts just as convuluted as the one you critiqued! How long you been on this messge board again? (Better yet, how long you been a Mean Green fan)? So.........in my best Monty Python'esqe way I ask you this, Sir Ragpicker: "Is that all you've got.....you pansy?!?!?!? How about......"PMG, your posts are always way too damn long-winded because all know that...... brevity is the soul of wit................and like I haven't been hammered with that phrase a couple dozen times or more the last dozen plus years I've been a member of this forum? So here you go, and your new GMG.com knighted name is.........Sir Lord Nitpicker...........and go ahead.....just keep chopping me up in little pieces! (And for heaven's sake don't ya' dare look at my new avatar pic or signature, either). But as always...................GMG!
  24. North Texas spent too many years with our teacher's college crowd on campus who seemed to wield more mis-directed influence than a bad CEO working for Enron as they even seemed to influence all these "not another Hayden Fry" kind of hires post-Fry's leaving for the Big 10 and Iowa. (Fry upset their little "we don't have to do much up to keep our jobs world" in ways that almost laughable as you look back thru the decades). Some of you fellow Old Gun Alums know exactly what I'm talking about here. You see some with goverment jobs (and trust me when you work for a public school or university you have a goverment job); but, too many of that gropu have way too much power, way too much influence and hardly.............no accountability whatsover. It blows the mind how much non-accountability (Sort of what's happening now with the IRS-gestopo in the USA; that is, until We The People have had enough of it and visually like our Founding Fathers did show them in most unforgettable ways how much we have had enough). YET.........How have all those "non Fry" hires worked out for the leftover J.C Matthews crowd in Denton.... least of all us? And trust me, we are least of all in all this and some of you have said as much with your posts with just some of the shabby customer service skills you have been the recipients of. Like him or not, we desperately need Coach McCarney to break the "not another Fry hire" mold and put together a very impressive string a winning seasons unseen in Denton since his main role model whose very picture adorns his HFC's office wall left Denton for his own alma mater. I've seen 4 winning seasons in a row. Most of you on this board have only seen 3....quite frankly, we all deserve better, and if for some reason Coach Mac doesn't cut the mustard, we need someone else to hire our next one. And (again) for what it's worth...isn't this how it would be done in the real world of business compared to how those with seemed protection from those ivory tower covered walls have done it in Denton and with our having years of W/L records to prove the point? GMG!
