CFB Entertainment Index - 2013 Best Teams To Watch
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Shhhhhh! Don't let our UNT constituency know about the boring part of our first opponent. Boring teams have put a scare into us in the past. 2 weeks after the Mean Green beat the University of Tennessee Volunteers in 1975, a school called Cal Poly-Pomona came to Fouts before right at 20,000 (its capacity back then) and we had a hard time putting them away as I recall. (We had an open week the week after we beat the Vols and many of us so wished we could have moved that Cal Poly-Pomona game up a week). Uh, we also beat the UH Coogs.................28 to 0.................. over at Texas Stadium that same season....thought I'd throw that one in for free, of course. Some of our new CUSA conference mates have no earthly idea what North Texas really had going on in Denton at that one particular time.....especially some from UTSA who think we've been chopped liver for all of the last 100 years. Along with our other CUSA conference mates home games this season, I am really looking forward to our hosting the Road Runners at Apogee Stadium come this Fall and have saved a few online clippings (if you will) on some of their comments about North Texas the last 1-2 years that I may send up to Coach Mac a week or 2 before that game, too. Kinda like that letter to the editor which that 'wascally 'wabbit SMU alum/fan Lawrence Perkins wrote to the North Texas Daily student newspaper the week of the 1990 SMU/North Texas game type of deal? It was said after all was said and done that approx. 24,000 got into Fouts Field for that game and it was even televised on a local DFW TV station, too. Simply amazing that that SMU game which almost seemed like a rivalry kind of college football game (albeit apparently a one-sided one at that particular time) could do to rile up the fan base. Link below is one of my top 10 favorite seasons following North Texas football when this particular year there were so few bowl games to reward some pretty darn good football teams which should have gone bowl'ing....and North Texas was one of those teams: http://www.totalfootballstats.com/Team_College.asp?id=155&Season=1977 GMG! -
DC'sTF prediction of your high school? My HS: Page 333 of magazine Danbury Panthers, Danbury, Texas (Brazoria County--SW of Houston) 13-2A, D-II Coach: Jimmy Thomas Prediction: 2'nd place (behind East Bernard Brahmas) ______________________________________________________________________ unt_rocket09, what large Texas city is Honey Grove located nearest? I put my HS's location near Houston because few would know where the heck Danbury, Texas, is located (or would care for that matter). In fact, some in Houston don't know where Danbury is located; that is, unless they wanted to eat some fresh caught out of the Gulf of Mexico jumbo fried shrimp with the best tasting batter on that shrimp you'll ever taste and that at Danbury's EJ's Cafe. Many from Houston have made the trip to Danbury for that. And thanks for posting since I have no idea where most of our GMG.com posters went to high school. And drex, can you "show me" on a map sometimes where your HS is located, right?

Fan Study, did any of you get this email today?
PlummMeanGreen replied to Marty's topic in Mean Green Football
For some reason I suppose I'm personna non grata on these special emails from that department at UNT who sends them out or just maybe they consider me as just not opinionated enough on what I've seen the last 40 plus years with a pretty damn good memory of all that I have observed in those 40 plus years, too? That's OK because last I checked on my wall the degree still says North Texas and I'm still Mean Green & proud of It as hell, of course. And when the med bills finally get paid off (assuming I live long enough to do that) then UNT will be next in line.....(once again).......OR.....I guess I just need a 2'nd income again but that would require me losing my bachelor-hood status and complete independence. -
OT: What Does Rice And North Texas Have In Common ?
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Actually, there is sort of an opposite thing working with our 2 schools, too: Our alums are said to love eating rice and theirs have a liking for eating (mean) greens. (Some of yall out there will remember when ex UNT athletic promotion man Bill Vogel actually had some company can some turnips greens(?) and put an actual label on them that said........Mean Greens? (True story). GMG! -
Heck, put a an old army cot, a Coleman stove, a Sears porta' potty, an old fashioned wringer washin' machine........a CD radio.......... plus a wet bar full of sodie' water in this sucka' and you've got yourself one heckuva' great vacation traveling trailer to take a tour of the Deep South where many of our CUSA foes are located. Can you imgagine when cars drove by you and honked at you or the kids in those cars did the air horn hands in motion thing wanting you to blow your truck cab's loud air horn instead you just roll down your window and holla'................. Hey! We Are North Texas......... Meaner & Greener By The Day! And then about that time you can see the parents of those kids telling them to "turn your heads this way, Mif' & Buffy (they'll be going to SMU, of course) and pay that old codger no mind...he probably needs to be in some sanitarium anyway! (Whoops! Time for me to take the AM meds)! GMG!

RV being recognized at Collegiate Facilities Summit
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Big week for RV...Maybe time for all to help him circle the Mean Green wagons no matter what good or bad experiences you've had or no matter what was said from either parties in the past? Honestly and looking at our past, doesn't a program like North Texas get from Point A to Point B much quicker and more successfully if we are all on the same page? Some might call it "bury the hatchet:" time? Or.......... like in the movie (as you know I am a movie buff) but in the 1959 version of the "The Alamo" when Davey Crocket (played by Duke Wayne) told Jim Bowie ( Richard Widmark) who had just had a big bruhaha over a whole bunch of nothing with Colonel William Barrett Travis (Laurence Harvey) .......but after one of Bowie and Barrett's angry encounters Crocket told a very stubborn Jim Bowie........"you're just not much into this forgivn' thing now are you, Jim?" Just a thought... GMG!- 7 replies

Yet untjim95, it seems the NCAA Big Boys are even trying to legislate out any future Cinderellas in the future NCAA as I interpret things as a confirmed NCAA enthusiast but still....novice. GMG!

This in the above bold black! Still amazing that UH's #14 ranking did not translate into a CUSA championship. USM won the battle but CUSA lost the war that year. Gang of 5 conferences must PR the sportswriters in their respective regions to the extent that most years their championship teams get Top 25 rankings. Seems to me that the MAC has done that better than anyone especially with their eastern sportswriters. They also had a team in the Orange Bowl last Fall, too, now didn't they? GMG!

Yep, HoustonEagle, I mean't football and should have stated such. GMG!

I'd rather CUSA and the Go5 conferences moreso try to steal some of the annual $20 million per Big Boy Conferences school TV monies instead. That is and maybe a few more million dollars is more than some Go5 conferences get for their entire conference. To put it nicely... the Big Boy Conferences (BBC's) being the the true gents that they are should bring a huge vat of Vaseline with them at the next NCAA Convention when all our conferences are in attendance. Not all schools in the BBC's (the bottom tier schools) deserve the windfall profits they are getting. Wonder how long they will get to enjoy that windfall? GMG!

Southern Miss looking for new athletic director (RV?)
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
When we have some great teams to put in our great venues then the cycle will have been completed and then all will be well on the northern front. Just 1 opinion on the matter since wins versus losses is much like the barometer of "number of sales" that many of our own job performances were judged by our own employers through the years. ....but still, congrats to AD RV for his extension. Smooth sailing for the balance of your UNT AD's contract, Rick V, because your success will also be our success, too. We still need to know our BOR's are mostly right, though, about most things even besides employer's contracts....right? If you've followed this program for close to 50 years you would know that they have not always been and our school's wanderings at different levels of the NCAA is proof of that. I hope Rick V will have us climbing the NCAA totem pole once again. He certainly has the energy to pull this off and even a novice would observe that he loves North Texas as much as he does his own alma mater--USM. In all fairness to our AD, he did inherit one helluva' mess when he took over as Admiral of our Mean Green ship. I still think back to that night when Gene Stallings told about 400 of us that "North Texas doesn't need to concern itself with ever building a new football stadium." GMG! -
Pretty cool stuff on our new conference's official site! http://www.conferenceusa.com/sports/m-footbl/c-usa-m-footbl-body.html PS: Sorry, MG61, I missed your thread on this.....moderators, please feel more than welcome to remove this thread. GMG!

GMG.com Places to eat and drink in Denton -- 2013 version
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Sure glad our fellow alum Pat Boone was never in his Denton restaurant's kitchen doing rope tricks while his diners were eagerly a-waitin' the, uh, catch-of-the-day? I know, I know, I know.....I will go to the hot place for posting this YouTube of our great, fellow alum (and true pioneer of Rock and Roll along with UNT'er, Roy Orbison) in a most embarrassing moment for Pat which I think he handled quite well truth be told It is sort of a funny TV moment, though.- 156 replies

GMG.com Places to eat and drink in Denton -- 2013 version
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Probably being way too sensitive about this but I thought I was reading a Denton Chamber of Commerce promo piece (unless they changed it dramatically); you know, where the Denton C of C seems to go into over-time in trying not to mention much about UNT (and even TWU's) huge roles in "Little D" and because of both schools which obviously create many Denton-based jobs. (With a combined enrollment of nearly 50,000 might that make some sense)? Hey now....wait a minute! The Pender's "Company History" page didn't mention UNT one time--not even the school that most likely inspired them to add even more jazz sheet music to their repertoire. As much as things seem to change...sometimes things don't change at all. GMG!- 156 replies

This thread probably slides over to Page 3 in a matter of a few hours but what the heck, it's still the off season and I am personally curiuos as to what you think of our future CUSA West Division foes. To have added the C-USA East Division would have made this much too long of a project; especially for us who have a touch of narcolepsy. Your admiration points can be anything and maybe not even what would be the usual; for example, check out mine for Rice U La Tech..........Top 25 ranking during part of last Fall and that being what they seem to aim for with their football program which really makes me admire those "Dawgs" of La Tech even more. Rice U...........Rice Stadium was location of my first ever college football game in 1961--Jess Neely was the Rice Owls HFC that Fall. And I believe Kern Tips even did the radio broadcast of this particular game on the Humble Oil Refinery Radio Network (later re-named Exxon)................."Hold That Tiger" and "Put A Tiger In Your Tank?" Southern Miss......IMO, these Golden Eagles are still the chairman of the board in CUSA West the last several years. Tulsa U................I was a Fall, 1968 HS senior last time we beat the Golden 'Canes & that on an ABC TV regional game on Houston's ABC TV's Channel 13; and UNT/Tulsa getting this "SWC dominated market" televised game when very, very few schools in the present Gang of 5 conferences would ever get televised. UTEP...............I get all teary eyed when I see that movie about their NCAA baskeball championship especially in that NCAA Final 4 game against Adolph Rupp's Kentucky Wildcats. UTSA...............Coker is building a formidable football program in the Cradle of Texas Liberty's home city albeit I think they get an NCAA FBS wake up call this Fall.....the Road Runners compete soon, though, in Conference-USA. That's it! GMG!

Good gosh, as long as we've been down were we not to expect the critics we get from Denton, Denia and the uttermost parts of the DFW Metroplex? Amazing thing about sports fans is how they are like a Roman mob....just give them something positive to chew on so they can pull a 180 degree shift to being excited about something again. We saw glimpses of that green-tinted Roman Mob changing their attitudes even as a Sun Belt school with those 4 trips in a row to the Wyndam New Orleans Bowl just last decade. We now have all the ingrediants in place (stadium, athletic center, MG Village, to bake one helluva' cake at UNT, we just have to turn the oven heat on and just win, win, win and more winning to start the final baking process. For a pretty neat reminder of what we do have at UNT and the Mean Green Village, etc....I present.... THIS! (click your mouse on any of the animated venues on the map to pull up a nice collage of pics) http://www.meangreenmap.com/?DB_OEM_ID=1800 GMG!

YES! Thanks for that KRAM1! It has been driving me even craz'ier" trying to think of that places name. My (then) girl friend from TWU and I loved their char-broiled hamburgers and hated it when they tore it down! Remember "John's Place" off Unversity Drive, too? It was a Sonic-like drive in. They had the best darn O'rings I'd ever had until Long John Silvers recently came out with theirs....of course, with my new diet I can no longer enjoy good fried foods! GMG! GMG!- 156 replies

PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Now I'm going a ways back here letsgiveacheer, but I'd bet you and a few others on this board would remember Underwood's BBQ out near Newton Razors ranch on University Drive? Believe it or not, there is still an Underwoods open in Brownwood, Texas, because I've eaten there a few times. And here is my New York Subway order, Harry: The whole #2 pressed ham, their great house dressing, cut the cheese but put everthing else on it. Then add a large bag of Lays pototato chips and one of their huge dill pickles! Nirvana! : (I ordered that same sub sandwhich when their store was actually located in the building next door (formerly a 7-11 store that had a smaller add-on shop attached to that 7-11). To Older UNT Alums: What was that nice Dennys'esque kind of place near TWU on east. University that used to have the best charbroiled hamburgers in Denton during the early 70's. It was located on or near Braums present location. GMG!- 156 replies

UNT Board increases student fees for athletics
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Part 2: Budgets, smudgets, fudgets and anyone who thinks they can break the spirits of true 'greenbloods' with any combination of numbers mean't to discourage. For most of us who call UNT "our school" criticism of our school on GMG.com (by even our own from time to time) should most times be taken as that of a constructive nature even when it doesn't look any where close to it. Yet to care enough to express an opinion one way or another is IMHO a healthy thing since there are probably well over 200,000 DFW alums many of whom have not been back to Denton since they left with a degree who don't care one way or the other. If half of that group would have cared the last 50 or so years North Texas would probably be in the Big 12 today. Still when the Green Brigade strikes up our alma mater "Glory to the Green" most every one of us to the person on GoMeanGreen.com can look around and see fellow posters standing up out of respect (even a degree of reverence) while at the same time each of us most likely reminiscing about the marvelous memories North Texas gives us and what the heck...even some of us singing fellow alum Julia Smith's composition of "Glory to the Green" word for word--sometimes even hitting a few of the right notes here and there as well. There is just something besides North Texas Mean Green athletics that pulls us in like a magnet to our Denton-based alma mater because in many way don't most of us re-live the happy times of our young adulthood most every trip to Denton, Texas, America, we make? You ever catch yourself going back to those old familiar places from a past gone by in Denton? Post all our of college days many times have not always been a bowl of cherries but sometimes....too many times a bowl of cherry pits but at least we still have our second home; that is, Denton, Texas, USA, to come home to and bask in those good times again. It's almost a phenomena how all this happens so come on now.......................who is it out there that possibly thinks they have the power to break our spirits and replace it with something far less inferior? So it's Glory To The Green to all of UNT's supporters & enthusiasts because the best is yet to come and don't most all of us feel that? Still there is no one alive who can ever take that away from any of us who feel quite at home at UNT and Denton no matter how hard or how long they try. Honestly, I can't wait to see many of my fellow UNT & Mean Green enthusiasts come this August 31'st and that whether we agree or disagree on all these things we post on this forum, too. GMG! -
DG, I check all that out, too, from time to time and saw almost 400 "the last 250 minutes" a few weeks ago. GMG!
