Razorback Fans Get Response From Coach Bielema.
PlummMeanGreen replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
4 to 6 instead of 6 to 8 (when the temp. sorta' starts going down on a Texas August thermometer)? Try for times when the most people can come out and so UNT doesn't have its first heat stroke victim in Apogee Stadium? Today's Class Assignment: Go outside even today between 4 and 6 and you will find out that it is the hottest time of most any day in August. Now maybe they had valid reasons to schedule this event from 4 to 6. Also, there is a shade in the very sections of West Apogee that they may need to sale many more season tickets, too. Heck, I may even buy an additional S.T. myself. So maybe its the "shade effect" going on here? Oh well...even with the recently announced open to the public practices they seem to be more sensitive to the very public that is going to make or break this program no matter what the W/L records are. Anyone else ever think if North Texas had had the kind of football program East Carolina did for the last 30 years that it could be the Mean Green in the Big 12 instead of TCU? ECU's big time attendance figures during the last 2 to 3 decades comes to mind and last time I observed....its large numbers of people (as in fans?) which made that happen in Greenville, NC. So (perhaps) cater to the regulars, those coming back and then all the "would be" Mean Green fans as much as you possibly can especially when wins have been so few of late? GMG! -
CFB preview: BCS ending, but segregation here to stay
PlummMeanGreen replied to Greenrex's topic in Mean Green Football
Now even the modern sports media sees themselves as the Pharaohs of Egypt back in Moses' time; you know, as in if they decree it in one of their columns then so shall it be done? FWIW, Super Conference talk has been going on for well over 40 years now and do we see one yet? G5 conferences have a true gripe or concern with the question of "why do all the bottom dwellers of the P5 conferences get all the goodies while so many of the G5's better football schools could beat them on most any Saturday of most any Fall?" GMG! -
Good stuff and post-game sidelights of that game, FFR. Don't call me a Mean Green Benedict Arnold here, but sitting in DKR Memorial that evening, gazing over toward our Texas state capital building in the background then watching the 400 (?) piece Longhorn band with their Big Bertha drum march into the stadium gave me a surge of Texas pride. Of course, the Green Brigade showed all at DKR that it, too, was hardly a chopped liver sandwhich of a college marching band, but UT band members knew all the time what they would be able to expect from UNT's marching band (and they did not disappoint them). It was a great night to be Mean Green except for the final score which was not the fault of so many classy UT fans who knew what had happened to us; but rather the focus being on 1 or 2 referees who should have been ashamed of themselves for totally controlling the narrative of this game and then its final score. GMG!

Obvious that his feet are nowhere near where they need to be for it to be a legitimate touchdown. Not sure I've ever seen any college football game that had so many 'homer calls' in it as this one. Sure....you go on the road and you expect 1 or 2 of those, but it seemed this game had way more than the usual number. GMG!

I've never seen this YouTube version of the UT/UNT 1988 game. With so few hits, it must be new? The old version has several thousand hits as I recall. I was at the game (just as so many of you reading this were) yet someone please refresh my memory on this but............... were not those first 2 UT fumbles in the first part of the video still considered to be (amazingly) UT's ball? I haven't seen this video so I've not seen the new camera angle of that last called UT TD pass to Kerry Cash and on that blundered call I will still say what the prison guard said in Shawshank Redemption when he saw an empty prison cell as in---------O my holy God. And for the first TD pass reception in the endzone it seems the SWC official almost had his TD hand signal up before the player even touched the football? Hey, what all this means to me is that what we did during that most memorable 1988 season year as an NCAA D1-AA football program; anyhow, wouldn't it be quite plausible for this to happen again in this new era in Conference-USA? For North Texas, the sky is still the limit for what this school's football program can do and that even at the NCAA's highest level. GMG!

The old "parakeet thru a hoola-hoop" helmet, FFR. That helmet served its era well, especially in 1988 when we beat Rice, TCU, Texas Tech and what even many U of Texas Exes at DKR Memorial Stadium post-game on the way back to their cars say was a UNT win the referees gave their school instead. Gosh, had U of North Texas been in the Southwest Conference that year we would have come darn near winning it! LOL! GMG!

Who Says Local Guys Won't Play for UNT?

Most of us would probably agree that Coach Mac could recruit em' from Mars or Venus as long as they can help get this Mean Green Ship back on a similar course as his Iowa Hawkeyes hero had it here at one time. GMG! -

Still....the "North Texas" on our present helmet has the end of the chin strap covering 1 or 2 letters. Some might call that a bit tacky? Or do we become North Tex instead to accomodate that particular wardrobe malfunction? And in conjunction with our new CUSA membership will there be other numerous items of Mean Green sports gear to change, too? I do like the flying worm for the first game. Wonder what our players think about it? If they could see some highlight video from the era it was adorned they might grow to love it. GMG!

Who Says Local Guys Won't Play for UNT?
PlummMeanGreen replied to KRAM1's topic in Mean Green Football
Or maybe they just preferred a closer to home university with a more diversified and ecletic environment that was just not way too much lilly white for them? I can say that since I'm white; actually I'm probably more a shade of beige than white; but the real world out there is all about being around diversity and they will get more of that at UNT than other places. And with our main campus in Denton which would also give a UNT athlete on scholarship a great foundation for which to transfer course credits designed to make such a transfer a bit more easy toward post-grad programs at the UNT Law School or, uh, over near your fine, little privates school the UNT Health Science Center or a program designed to make them full-fledged Doctors of Osteopathy (D.O's), or they'd have a choice to major in a program that would give them job choices as a high ranking hospital administrator and finally they could transfer from UNT with the core curriculum under their belts to even become a pharmacist because of the new UNT Pharmacy School. * Latest word on the street is that an M.D. program is now on the UNTHSC's master plan, too, and will soon enough be up for vote with the Texas legislature. And apparently we are going to need many more doctors in this country and quite soon, too. Not sure they could get anything close to all the aforementioned by going to schools with such a limited curriculum if you know what I mean. And (once again) back to your beloved TCU? (And on the subject are yall going to be purple this year or blue which suddenly popped up on your teams unis & as your school's apparent new colors a few years ago)? (Yall really need to make a decision as to what your school's officials teams colors truly are at some point, right)? But Back To The Subject of TCU: Your school will become what some used to call yall back in the SWC's last quarter century of operations as...............Those (close to or in the) Celler-Dwellin' TCU Horned Frogs! Mark it because yall are now swimming with the Big 12 sharks who are known to injest little insignificat tadpoles such as TCU thru their nostrils. Have A Nice Day! Addendum: At North Texas a football player will have dramatically more opportunities of winning conference football championship and who knows maybe even a BCS bowl bustin' kind of bowl like Orange Bowl bound Northern Illinois did last year. At TCU? Not so much and I simply defer to Baylor U as proof of that as in....how many Big 12 football championships have the Bears won lately since their 1'st year in the Big 12? -
Three Practices Open to The Public...
PlummMeanGreen replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
Open practices are great! Just like anything that is put on the table that is new (or not been part of our culture of late) it will take time to build this, too. First thing is letting more know these 3 practices will now be open to them. UNT has been negligent in doing this open to the public practice thing for too many years. I think CUSA membership and seeing other schools in our league have lights out season ticket sales has our people...I repeat "OUR PEOPLE" thinking about more P.R. now than ever. And no, I've not always agreed with the M.O's of "Our People" but still...they are...... "our people" with our best interest in mind. Amazing thing is that they don't sit up there and come up with ideas that will be failures or that which could shorten their tenures at UNT. We have to sometimes remember all that even when we don't think that way. Can We Talk Here? We let too many petty things keep our most diverse fan base as well as GMG.com posters from breaking bread together at the Mean Green Dinner Table. Yes, too much losing has created much of this, but others have lost far worse than we and have still unified their fan base during their own adverse times to put it all together in the name of dear ol' alma mater. If all this is not for or about our alma mater, then just what or who is it for? Lest we sometimes forget, we are on the same team who want the real Mean Green football team to succeed. If we on this forum of arguably UNT's most enthusiastic cannot drop some of this pettiness and tow the rope then can we really expect less enthusiastic fellow alums/fans among our constituency to pick up this so-called rope? . -
Yes! The 2013 season begins today! GMG!
-
And as I recall from watching re-runs of games I copied, many times DK#7 had numerous passes dropped or bounced off of hands which 1 or 2 of those created interceptions. I know, all QB's have that happen, too, but if our coaching staff can create the same kind of game plans for Thompson as they did for the ULaLA and Kansas State games, will we then need to cast our concerns elsewhere? Sure we're all mostly optimistic this time of year, but I have a funny feeling about this team, especially with all the newbies coming in that could mesh quite nicely with those we've had here already. GMG!

UNT lands Key Offensive Line Recruit Christopher Miles
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Anyone want to bet a skinny "no sugar/no carbs" drink that he will be 3 stars before he graduates? We all have our theories on that, too, but maybe the sports lame stream media will figure out one fine day that they can also be 3 or 4 star talents w/o having to go to USC or UT, too. GMG! PS: I did sneak a look on ESPNU last night of much of the 2006 USC/UT game last evening though. Do I get demerits for doing that?- 38 replies

I have what might be a novel idea here.....why don't we just wait, play the games and see what happens? Pre-season talk and forecasts are great but at some point you have to turn them off like a water spicket and just wait for the games to begin. It just seems to me that the CUSA West Division gang has put all this predicting and such well into several over-times this summer. Predictions too many times among our G5 conferences are so useless. 2 or 3 years ago ULaLa was picked to finish last or close to it in the Sun Belt Conference and their answer to that was ? ? ? ? They won the SBC, took about 40,000 fans over to the NO's Bowl and beat the MWC San Diego State Aztecs was their answer to the "all knowing" pre-season sooth-sayers and prognosticators. IMO, North Texas has more talent on this team than is being given credit from across our new conference, and in many ways we enter CUSA in our first year similar as to when we did the SBC in its first year because..........nobody had any idea how that team or this year's team would mesh with all the new talent combined with some pretty decent talent already there. I think this Fall's team will mesh much better than most of our fans will ever believe but we're all still a tad shell-shocked from our lack of success the last several years but still.............we have to play out the schedule to see. Yes, its fun to speculate, but North Texas for the upcoming 2013 season has seen the whole 180 degree thing (if you will) and has been predicted to go to a bowl game (by some of Phil Steele's research staff) or by many from the CUSAbbs board (who seem to know nothing about our past multi-decades football history in NCAA D1 since many of them are newbies to it themselves of late) and...............whereas some from that CUSA bbs message board all but predicting that our team will just forfeit the entire schedule for fear of competing in this new CUSA! LOL! Let's just play the games and see what happens? GMG!

In any normal situation Year 3 for a coach would not be a barometer year, but we know we've not been Normal since about 1890. I think if Coach Mac wins at least 5 games (which we will) he will be fine. I think this thing would have had to completely have fallen apart for us not to win 5 games. I've predicted 6 or 7 with 7 wins needed for a bowl invite. We all are quite jaded from the past 7 or 8 years, but lets look at the fact that we have some talent on this team whereas when all pistons were running last Fall we beat a bowl bound/bowl winning opponent; didn't do too badly against a top ranked Kansas State Wildcats team, too. I think the UNT coaching staff will for certain treat this upcoming football season as if much is on the line. At UNT, you just never know what is on the line at times or with whom its on the line. That hardly mean't as a negative, but just an observation from having followed this program since 1973. Some of you on this forum continue to say it best when you post......"just win" because IMO that alone will solve so many of our problems across the board, and especially on this board. GMG!

UTSA Fans predict C-USA wins and losses
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Killing 2 Birds With One Stone (1) I really, really, really do think, though, that our timeline to get back to our winning ways will be so much better than this ex CUSA school's multi-years losing football seasons prior to their first year as a CUSA member and as seen in the link below: http://mcubed.net/ncaaf/teams/smu.shtml ________________________ correcamino Bald Eagle Members 61 posts Posted Yesterday, 07:08 PM You beat a solid ULL team, I'll give you that. But other than that your 2012 season is not very noteworthy. Same goes for most of your other seasons in recent years. Our season is nothing special either since we played a weak schedule but that's my point...we're both likely bottom half teams in our division this season. There's no huge gap between us so why puff your chest out at UTSA as if there is ? (2) You really do believe that which I've highlighted in blue? The most respected of all college football magazine gurus, ie, Phil Steele (and his magazine's extensive research staff) hardly share your opinion about North Texas at all as far as where the Mean Green will finish. Some of Phil Steele's staff even have North Texas going to a bowl game in 2013, ie, just like we did our first year in the Sun Belt Conference and the next 3 seasons thereafter. -
UTSA Fans predict C-USA wins and losses
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
We've got a deal working with Taco Bell that is going to make fried chicken go completely out of style in the area of sports promotions. Then we have the Tums people who are going to work with us, too, in what will be one heckuva' winning combination of a deal for all our fans. (The Porta' Potty folks have been talking to our AD, too, just in case there is a dire need....know what I mean, Vern)? Bring on those Road Runners! GMG! -
A very serious case of the high-lighted in bold statement of yours could have been made toward TCU their last 25 years in the SWC. In fact, many of your older alums had all but given it all up. The day the SWC imploded was a very, very sad day in Fort Worth because the Big 12 was basically telling TCU...."why don't yall go join about 5 conferences in less than 10 years and we might consider you then. So I guess as far as North Texas is concerned all the things you seem to want to happen to our athletic program are just not going to happen at all. 36,000 plus students (which will become over 40K before you can say "rivet") and over 200,000 UNT alums in DFW are going to be as patient about all this as I presume TCU was during their long SWC journey of one losing decade after another. You should have really seen all those empty seats at ACS when UT, TAMU, TTech and Baylor weren't bringing their traveling fans to FW to help TCU pad what would otherwise be pretty pathetic attendance numbers for a Big Time SWC school. Why is this all so important to you anyhow to come over here so much and say (basically) the same ol' things? GMG!
