UNT Regent gives a more definitive timeline on baseball
PlummMeanGreen replied to laxtonto's topic in Mean Green Football
I have no idea but what kind of college baseball stadium can you get for that price? -
I really wiish the early AFL stars had a better chance for the NFL Hall of Fame of which Abner would be one of those who would get very, very high consideration. Lamar Hunt who one of our alums once told me signed Abner in the south end zone at Fouts Field always said Abner Haynes was the AFL's first bonafide super star. I cannot remember which NFL team had his draft rights but I'd bet one of you do. GMG! PS: Abner has told many of us some real, bonfide horror stories about racism in the mid 1950's.

$30.4 Million 2014 UNT Athletic Budget (Proposed)
PlummMeanGreen replied to DeepGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
If history is not being revised then might the one who says it is be the one who is actually doing the revising? First of all, I don't think Todd Dodge's record at UNT has been the subject matter of any of this thread for those who want to bring that up. I think we all remember quite well what it was. Still....there was this: UNT coach Todd Dodge reiterated Monday his hope and desire to be in a new stadium no later than 2010. "I’ve been told we’d open (a new stadium) in 2010," Dodge said. "That’s when I’m holding them to it. For this program to go where it needs to go, we’ve got to get a new stadium." (a Fort Worth Star Telegram quote from new UNT head football coach Todd Dodge's press conference) http://www.star-telegram.com/sports/story/774327.html GMG! -

What will also make no sense to Froggie Boy will be when history repeats itself in the Big 12 a la their old SWC days when his little frog pond campus' football program becomes "SWC 2.0 Bottom Dwellers" once again; that is, until UT and OU pull a TAMU and split from the Big 12 for greener and much larger capacity stadiums to play before; you know, as in the SEC or.............the PAC12? TCU will not be able to sustain MWC-type success at the Big 12 level much longer so they better enjoy it while they have it. The pendelum swing south for Frog football is as inevitable as the turning of the earth. TCU guy, your school has reached its destination, now leave us alone while we enjoy our journey. GMG! -
Would be nice if North Texas could add another DFW radio station that will cover Fort Worth, the West O' Plex and into southern Oklahoma. And below a little nostalgia for some.
-
....that would be both the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the NFL Hall of Fame, too. This is a travesty. Read Cedrick Hardman's Wikipedia bio page link below and I think you will wonder why, too. Cedrick still has the San Francisco 49'ers all time sacks record all these years later. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cedrick_Hardman
-
Yep, many more of these and they will really become an "AA" Conference.
-
Yep, I will agree with FFR on this, too. I said early on when all this started with Johnny Football and when everyone else had pre-judged him and had all but strung him up a tree that he would be exonerated and not miss a single game this Fall and now it's even easier to say that. Those who have accused Manziel have been dismantled piece by piece and that mostly because of their shady past dealings in sports. It's an old story as far as I'm concerned. Time to play some football. GMG! PS: After hearing J.M.'s dad the other day on radio, he did describe his son as a sometimes "out there" free-spirit that had to be reeled in from time to time. Coach Sumlin & staff are probably already doing just that.
-
I had to read it again, too, to see his big omission which was his leaving out the school in "ONLY" the largest TV market in Conference-USA. The North Texas Metroplex will soon enough pass Philadelphia to become the #4 ranked market probably next major census by those who do the counting. http://www.stationindex.com/tv/tv-markets GMG!

$30.4 Million 2014 UNT Athletic Budget (Proposed)
PlummMeanGreen replied to DeepGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
True, UNT90, you are right, but most of the last post-bowl era at UNT we were still recruiting toward and playing at Fouts Field when everyone else and their NCAA FBS dogs were going "Beep! Beep!" past us as we ate all their dust. Some called it the college football venues arms race and we were so far behind. We still have some catching up to do. His Legacy? Todd Dodge at his very first press conference as new MG HFC (basically) said............."North Texas "MUST" build a new football stadium now.......we have no choice." Prez' Gretchen B and Rick V started the ball rolling but T.Dodge was the one who threw the glass of ice water at our BOR's faces and all but gave an ultimatum (and the first day on a new job is about the only time one can do such). IMHO, that will always be Todd Dodge's legacy he left North Texas since we know the wins never came. GMG! -
$30.4 Million 2014 UNT Athletic Budget (Proposed)
PlummMeanGreen replied to DeepGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
With our location and ever-growing UNT student body, wouldn't those figures get us where we need to be for now? Say what you will, but we just don't have to have as large a recruiting budget as most non-Texas programs located in smaller population outposts. Yes, we want double the recruiting budget of everyone in CUSA, but we probably don't need double considering so many other variables. ? ? ? How many Texas HS football players looking for a future home take exits off I-35E and I-35W to take a spur of the moment unofficial visit or look-see at fabulous Apogee Stadium and the Mean Green Village? Location "IS" important no matter what those whose schools don't have it say. GMG! -
Quarterback for UNT football team undecided
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Now that is what most would call a team player because that is not always the case at other football collegiate outposts; in fact, it can get downright ugly and counter-productive. In 40 years of following MG football I cannot recall this many quality QB's in Fall camp, but you still cannot have enough on stand-by due to injuries, attrition and all. IMHO, a football program should recruit at least 2 good quality QB's each year. Would North Texas have even gone to the NO's Bowl and then defeat the C-USA champion Cincinatti Bearcats in 2002 if we had not had the late, great Andrew Smith waiting in the wings to come in for an injured Scott Hall? If we get the DL in tip top shape this Fall then..............hmmm? GMG!- 20 replies

UNT Board of Regents approves $870 million budget
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Would probably be named after the one who gives the big bucks a la the Warranch Tennis Complex? Wonder which present or former Major League Baseball player out there would like to get rid of some pocket change to have a college baseball stadium named after him? Seriously... GMG!- 8 replies

The Marshall official knows exactly what he's talking about. All this is a bigger deal than I think many of our constituency inside and outside GMG.com even realize (yet so many of our constituency do realize how big a deal this is for North Texas). All the pieces of our sometimes seemingly un-solvable puzzle I see slowly fitting into their places and that is the first time most of us Baby Boomers and up* could ever say such in our lifetimes. GMG! * We have 1 or 2 on this message board who first started following the Mean Green as UNT students when our football field was located where the Willis Library now stands.

I once took about a year vacation away from this message board. I think some are now at the same juncture I found myself and may want to consider doing the same. The negativisms become epidemic and even personally unhealthy at times--in mind, body and spirit. Again, there is no future in Negative Ned'ville in Mean Green Country or among the Mean Green Nation. Those who choose that route are fighting a losing battle and some of those battles (quite frankly) need to be lost; in fact, probably most of them need to be lost. At some point, the negativisms even become counter-productive to some of the "well meaning" but still negative ol' Neds ; such posts begin to run off "would be" or potential fans and even worse...............potential recruits that read this board (and trust me...they do) who want no part of a negative fan base. A G5 co-existance in the present NCAA configuration is tantamount to a Carribean cruise ship and guess what, Coogie' Guy? We're all on the same deck of this ship merely re-arranging the deck chairs from time to time. Some years the AAC will get prime seating placement on this deck and then some years it will be C-USA who'll get the same luxury, but the cold harsh facts and the reality of all this still remains....we are all on the same deck of this ship. Last year Northern Illinois received the "Captains Special Commendations Award" (if you will), since they became a BCS bowl-buster and got an Orange Bowl invite. Hope that is not taken away from our G5 cruise ship in the future. Just always know that things could be worse, though, because on our our cruise ship there is always the steerage section below but that belongs exclusively to the, uh, NCAA FCS group? GMG!

Could DT have been hamstrung last year? Hear me out...

Could DT have been hamstrung last year? Hear me out...
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Who dat' in the YouTube video below inhabiting #7's uni' against #15 Kansas State last Fall? Was it...........could it possibly be..........Casper the unfriendly ghost in that uni'? ......and who dat' inside #7's uni' who showed that when the game plan was crafted for his skills; when he didn't have his best receiver injured (and others dropping passes) and the MG running game was going great guns that DK#7 could even defy his greatest critics--even those of the home-grown variety? So........surely that wasn't Derek Thompson inside that North Texas #7 uni' ? Or.................was it? Seriously, the 5 minute version of this video shows a more complete version of what I believe our 5'th year senior QB can do for this Fall's Mean Green football team but here is a shorter version. Forget about statistics--didn't John Madden once say..........."statistics are for losers?" ______________________________________________ Fellow alums, Mean Green fans and DT's biggest (yet understandably concerned as loyal alums) critics.............just take an extended look at the very opening scene of this YouTube video below. I know how it made me feel about a 5'th year North Texas QB who looking back a few Fall campaigns ago someone told him in entertainment jargon to.........."break a leg".........well.......at Clemson U before almost 80,000 fans....he did just that. He broke his leg or a 340 pound DL broke it for him. And when DT#7 becomes an older North Texas alum one day, chances are that he will probably still be feeling the effects of that broken leg many decades later. Yeah, you're right...it's just part of the game, but just like many of you....I can't and won't criticize Derek Thompson because he's for too many of the same things that we're for as a Mean Green Nation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgncfMeAhrY -
Yes, yes... We have to all pull together and do the solidarity thing (a la that 1994 season when we all pulled out the stops to the person to regain NCAA D1-A classification) and because in a weird sort of way I also think a college football team can tell if we're not.
