Guess I need to call long time WBAP AM personality Hal Jay on the air (who brags about TCU every other sentence) and ask him if he had a hard time finding a good place to sit last Saturday. So the Frog faithful all stayed home to watch Texas/OU? LOL! This is a Big 12 game in that ACS photo? I've posted (ad nausem just like about everything else) how TCU had attendance problems back in the 60's, 70's and part of the 80's so now maybe a few more believers now? I made a handful of their OOC games back in the day, but I never saw ACS this empty. No traveling Big 12 fans ="s this? How would Apogee look like with a minimum of 5K traveling fans for our conference games? (How's 'bout 27,000 for last weekend's game for staters)? Darn shame SMU didn't have a home game this last weekend so we for the first time in memory could say we won the Metroplex NCAA FBS Schools Attendance Award. I did see some very promising signs with our promotions efforts last Saturday evening, but I hope none of us get happy with crowds in the low to mid 20's; after all, Apogee Stadium does seat 31,000. Seeing the Wing Zone 1/3'rd full was such a welcome sight. Wonder what are we doing to help ourselves at the turnstiles for Halloween Night versus the Rice Owls for our nationally televised game. I will be there with 3 other guests from Parker County. GMG!

I am very happy! I almost got teary eyed when I saw that several groups were in attendance and getting Jumbotron treatment or recognition. Even Baptist and Methodist church groups, too. Groups will fill Apogee so much faster than individual day of game walk up ticket sales. My late mama taught me that concept at a very young age.

Was "only" 32 years old when I first head Toto's Rosana on my new Pioneer sound system I had purchased at the old North Hills Mall (may she rest in peace) in North Richland Hills. I went absolutely NTSU, I mean NUTS first time I heard it and thought jazz and rock had made the perfect union with that Toto hit. Toto was basically a group of some very talented and fantastic studio musicians. Toto's David Paich (sang lead in Africa) would also collaborate with Boz Scaggs on some music later on . Another song the UNT Green Brigade did on one of their CD's was "Get Away"; ie, the energetic reprise or instrumental ending to their huge hit "Hard To Say I'm Sorry." Always thought that "Get Away" would have been a great song for our cheerleaders to put yell lyrics to, too. In "Get Away" our Green Brigade trombone section goes to town and brings that Chicago hit home big time. Hope they might consider putting it back in their already great repertoire. YouTube sample of "Get Away" at bottom of page begins at 3:50 on the video timeline. GMG! PS: KRAM1, I second that emotion of Silver Eagle being moderator of that section if Harry decides to allow its birth. PS2: I agree with Eastwood Eagle on an abbreviated "Fight Song" bit ie, the few "Lets Give A Cheer" measures to be played after a great play; somewhat like UT does with their few measures of "Texas Fight" after the Horns have made a great play PS3: Any else notice how all these non-huddle offenses last night was not allowing our Apogee PA guy enough time (at times) to get in his.............AND THATS GOOD FOR ANOTHER MEAN GREEN.............FIRST DOWN! ? Can we get a flag if our fabulous marching band is finishing up while our opponents are calling their signals?

Even if the critiques were 9 out of 10 of these? No program is too perfect as to not expect a little constructive critcism. It's sorta' how all of us operated post graduation as we went into all our respective professions. Bill Gates always wanted to know what all his grunts were thinking and valued their input--positive and negative. A UNT Green Brigade Marching Band section would also serve as an information center as well. Might get many Green Brigade alums from decades past involved again with their school? It was merely an idea to help...not to hinder. GMG!

Green and........Black for Halloween?
PlummMeanGreen replied to bstnsportsfan3's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't care about color. I've seen so many different shades of green at UNT the last 40 years some of which I never knew even existed. I just want to see a crowd at Apogee for this ESPN nationally televised game and I don't care if our players are playing nekid' (which would, of course, get more co-eds out for the game). Can I say this kind of stuff here? -
My gosh it looked like an army of potential recruits out there pre-game. Can't say that I've ever seen as many. GMG!

It was a good crowd, not a great crowd, but a good crowd. One day 22K will be considered a bad weather sort of crowd at North Texas, I really believe that. And didn't the Wing Zone look so much better last night, too, with a nice group of fans sitting in it? Low attendance numbers once created a nightmarish' situation (for a school our size) which would define our school for almost a generation and (subsequently) put us in a lower NCAA division of which few of us wanted and one which for sure made many feel like 2'nd class NCAA citizens. Some harp on this attendance theme because we don't want history to repeat itself; that is, for low attendance averages to define our school anytime in the future. We (and our leaders who have no choice but to come up with a marketing plan) are the only ones who can prevent this from happening again. (I saw some signs of what could very well be an emerging "butts in seats" marketing program last night--didn't you)? As a proud UNT alum (just like every one of you) I was encouraged with what I saw last night--truly encouraged; but ready to give up with the "we can do better with attendance" posts? I hardly think so. Right now, we will have to do all we can do to make sure UTSA doesn't completely "Beep Beep" right past our 100 years of playing football school and not so much right now in the wins department but.................(what else)................in the attendance department.. Right now they are kicking ours (and others) butts. After all, how many national articles have we had on our football attendance lately? We somehow have to allow it to sink into all our mindsets that it is really good attendance numbers that defines any NCAA FBS school's football program and also what that program's true aspirations for growth really are; and not so much wins because we know with great crowds ='s better recruiting (per Coach Mac's very words) ='s more wins--a very easy formula for all to see that UNT Athletics must keep on reminding us along with a plan of action we can all follow. Plus when that day of SRO at every game at Apogee arrives we can put this attendance thing once and for all on the back-burner of our "Concerned About Our Attendance Department." I am so ready for that day to get here....and the sooner the better. Best part is we have the numbers to make this happen so much quicker than most, but (like sales) you have to have a plan with much elbow grease as to pull in those additional numbers. I think all would agree that our UNT culture says all this with screaming 3 inch headlines, too. (And whoever said the things that makes a football program ultimately great would be easy anyhow)? GMG!

Good find, KRAM1... I said this about 2 months ago but I like beer sales because it will help sober up some of our fans who drink too much during tail-gating. If a few of that group are obviously too drunk standing in line at concessions for another brew'sky, I don't think they would be sold 1 cup of beer....period. ? Just sell beer thru the end of the 3'rd quarter (last call for alcohol?) and then merely stop selling beer. Beer sales gets more (older) students out for the game and that demographic age group we need more of, right? GMG! PS: Trust me, the day Baylor would ever sell beer would be the true eve of Armageddon; that is, unless they could get by selling it in coffee cups.

The Church Lady (from older Saturday Night Live shows) was also in attendance at Apogee Stadium last night--didn't you see her, too? She was with one of several church groups in attendance & recognized on the JumboTron (way to go, UNT athletic promotions; anyway, our latest celebrity new Mean Green fan was even over-heard saying: "Could it be that, uh, well, errr' (SATAN!) made him hit that young man?" Great "legal" hit, Sed! You are are now officially................ MEAN GREEN! __________________________________ Would the group of CUSA refs at our Tulane game have over-turned it and w/o that caused Sed to miss the first half of next weeks game? (I'm sorry, I am still pissed with CUSA officiating and fully understand why Coach Mac has contacted the CUSA offices with with video showing his own concerns). If one or more of their calls the next few weeks cost us a bowl game, then will more of you be pissed, too)? Addendum: None of our fans want any of our opponents players to get hurt in any of our games, but we don't want to hear that our team is called a dirty football team based on hard hitting, too.
-
I think Tulane plus the CUSA refs are better than us, but I think Tulane w/o that team of CUSA refs were not better than us. I thought last night's game was going to be the CUSA's refs post Tulane encore game until I think Coach Mac pulled 1 or 2 of em' aside and had a quick "come to Jesus" talk with them plus..............our very vociferous crowd went after them for that bad TD call which was reviewed and over-turned and on that call did you year Hank of the MGRN say (and I loosely paraphrase).......... .............."I believe the home faithful response helped reverse that call?" And he said that after it was shown on the JumboTron and our thought our fans were going to jump onto the field and have our first public hanging of a refree from the south end zone goal post. Now I wish we had ECU on our schedule since MUTS gave the Pirates a run for it but to be honest, I think we'll all take 2 road wins over La Tech and USM first. A great night to be Mean Green! GMG!

Had we averaged 30K to 40K in all our games in the Cotton Bowl and Texas Stadium back in the late 60's to the 70's, there would have been not one North Texas president (or his/her BOR's) who would have dared recommending nothing else but moving forward with that kind of burgeoning NCAA D1-A football program because of having such (here are those 2 words again)......................good attendance . So many good things can really come as a result of having great support for a college football program. UTSA will be able to fast forward their own football program much like South Florida because of what they are doing now and not so much with their W/L record but...............A-T-T-E-N-D-A-N-C-E. We are hoping in this our inaugural year in CUSA that our top leaders at UNT will see what UTSA, Old Dominion and Charlotte are doing with season ticket sales and for UTSA at the turnstiles, maybe swallow a little pride with what these upstarts are doing and even copy-cat what those 3 programs are doing if we have to. I think this is why so many of our elect want to see a bigger than ever campus-wide focus on this attendance thing at North Texas so we don't have to suffer thru any more NCAA classification demotions and BTW.........this has been a concern long before Rick V, Coach Mac and all their staffs came to Denton. They did not create the problem because like all their predecessors...........they inherited it. Ad nausem time again, but this attendance thing deserves a high powered focus from the very top and that means Dr. Rawlins and his BOR's. Just my 02, too.

Never mind all that from last decade, but today we have our work cut out for us more than I think most seem to be admitting. Already said this before, but they have a speed merchant of a running back who can score anytime he touches the ball and when their QB is on.... .he is flat on. This will be a close game today, folks. I would be happy with a 1 point win if we win. GMG
-
...in his article today an interesting statistic which said... All of North Texas opponents up thru today's game have combined records of 17 & 5. I will try to get the link unless someone beats me to it first which would be A-OK by me. Another way to look at our FWST coverage is that their paper gives North Texas so much more special correspondence coverage than the Denton R/C gives TCU and the same can be said with the Dallas Morning News as far as that goes. Lets give both of our region's 2 major newspapers something to write about starting a about 6:00 PM today! GMG!

Speaking of FAU and FIU, amazing how didn't get even 1 of those 2 on this year's schedule. Would have been a good year to play both of em' matter a fact. It would have probably clinched a bowl game for us if we're close on that. GMG!

Busting North Texas Football Myths
PlummMeanGreen replied to meangreener's topic in Mean Green Football
Some seem to be thinking much better than projected earlier in the week. How many parents normally come out on Parents Day Game Day? Anybody want to venture a guess? meangreener, what you are doing is great and could be invaluable toward eventually getting a campus grass roots effort among the UNT student body to get more students on the Mean Green bandwagon. Funny part here is how none of us yet know what 2 or 3 winning seasons (with bowl appearances) might do to be the eventual cure-all. There is so many more in our constituency than even during the 4 years in a rowl bowl run of early last decade. Still....wouldn't it be nice for any of our students now to be able to say......... "I Was At Apogee Supporting "OUR" Team During The Down Times" as most who post on this board have been? GMG! -
Good idea'r. Might SOW fit on the back of our helmet and work that way as well or be too imbalanced? Temples "T" looks like one Texas A & M used back in the day.

http://group5sports.com/ Fractured Tales and Most Biased Mean Green Fan Thinking Here: North Texas beats Ball State, should have beaten Ohio U and they have the MAC that far ahead of CUSA based on what? (Yes, I see NIU is top ranked, too, but so is ECU). Yet to me it looks like the group who referee'd our Tulane game must have put that G5 conference rankings together, too. Shall we tell tomorrows refs at Apogee that we are leaving for the AAC, too, (not) and expect them to reward us accordingly as I believe they did Tulane? And I don't think the Sun Belt is ahead of us, either, as I look at our future members coming in next year from the SBC like Western Kentucky? (Sorry, I am already counting them as a CUSA school)! LOL! GMG!

One thing that I actually think was a North Texas Myth back when we changed from 1-A to 1-AA is that we had an AD on staff at that time who forgot to send to the NCAA offices a pretty sizeable fee that would have bought us more time at the NCAA 1-A level. Like I said, I really never did believe that and as much as I hate to say this.......... we went down to 1-AA in 1982 because that was what we were. Our football facilities back then were not even of a 1-AA quality. GMG

Yes! (And I think it is, in deed, Parents Weekend). Shoot for the moon and hit the barn? Then put em' all on top the barn roof! SRO style! All this after 8 losing seasons in a row could get pretty impressive fairly fast if we merely have a plan in place to follow. GMG! -

North Texas Myth # ? is...that we don't have a serious number of wealthy alums out there but trust me, we do. Some on this very message board but the family farm inheritance did not come thru for me. -

A student led and on-campus grass roots effort to get this attendance thing solved once and for all. To quote Shaft (from the movies and song fame) and to answer the question......."can you dig it? Well...... "I can dig it!" Go for the gusto, meangreener!
