🙂 On AXS TV I saw Dan Rather in his “The Big Interview” series interview Mr. & Mrs. Randy Travis & this Irish guy almost started bawling. I had no idea his stroke had been that severe. Still, Randy smiles through it all as if nothing had happened. What a positive human spirit that guy is all about. I’m happy they are Mean Green fans. Last I heard they live in Denton county (near Argyle)?

UTEP aka Texas Western has a NCAA BASKETBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP legacy. The movie that celebrates that story was superb. Adolph Rupp was (sadly) the NCAA king of Jim Crow back in the 60’s in Deep South Kentucky. America has come a long ways since, but still quite a ways to go.

Always needs to be a spot or 2 for a Cinderella? The NCAA powers need not screw that role up, too.

I’m not too crazy with P5’s getting their 5’th place teams in the Big Dance. Stop selections at 1’st thru 4’th place finishers in all conferences; that is, if their 3’rd & 4’th place finishers are worthy. 🦅

La Tech will be loaded for bear Saturday afternoon at the Super Pit. You know it & I know it. Remember how the Bulldogs spoiled Mean Joe Greene’s statue unveiling Game Day before 30,000 plus fans at Apogee Stadium? That happened when they blocked what would have been a Mean Green winning field goal? Who out there doesn’t think La Tech would not like to spoil all the fun of our winning a an outright CUSA basketball championship before the home crowd? Doing just that by beating us tomorrow afternoon? A record crowd (yes, a record crowd) in the Super Pit could be the difference & to use the pop sports phrase of the 2020’s decade—THAT KIND OF CROWD COULD BE… A REAL GAME CHANGER. 🦅

👍👍 I grew up around people like GMac as a kid & teen. He’s a PK (preachers kid). I was a DK (deacon’s kid). There are quite a few of that group in Texas & they’re not just Baptist, either. It’s Texas—not New York or Jersey. In Texas many parents made you go to church Sunday AM & Sunday PM & (of course) Mid-Week Services every Wednesday or Thursday. Like it or not, it’s just part of the Lone Star State culture. To try for the impossible & shorten this some, it’s such a background that may help North Texas keep Coach GMc longer than most here will expect—albeit some still won’t stop with their “we’re never going to be able to keep him” comments to a level of ad nauseam. Grant McCasland needs to be making $1,000,000 plus percs very soon, though. What does he make now—about half of that? $1,000,000 plus per year is an insult to that man especially where he’s at now at his production level; that is at 100 wins in year 5. (What does Coach Jank’ make at SMU? I’d guess at least $2-$3,000,000 a year plus some impressive percs). One of our best alums told me Coach Grant seems to want to build a legacy in Denton so with that he’s not just about the money, but it’s a 2-way street inasmuch that Mean Green support will need to increase right along with Mac’s trip to his eventual legacy in Denton. Who said it, but sometimes the journey is as exciting as the destination. 🦅

Did one of the AD’s from a true P5 Big Time basketball schools who started all this say with an impish grin: ”Hey! Lets build a mini-gym with 5,000 less seats than our coliseum; have gold-plated plumbing fixtures in an endless number of restrooms (especially 4X’s the Lady’s restrooms); put a 4 star restaurant at the main entrance, etc. & see how many of these suckas’ try to copy us? He continued: “I’ll bet most of those copycats will be from Texas & the Deep South!” 🙄 Seriously now: How is UNT’s expansion of the Athletic Center/Apogee End Zone Facility coming along?😳🙃 ⭐️ Moral of all this? 10,700! We tie the Super Pit attendance record! Even TWU Pioneers wearing their maroon with an apple green racing stripe are seen all over the place as well as Friends of the Library. 🎶Memories are made… 🎶 ❇️🦅❇️ (Probably more like 7,999). I do see 10,700 in our very near future, though.

The unknown commodity, ie, the UNT students, will determine if we have good attendance …or…outstanding attendance this Saturday afternoon. (Do they know there is free food at high noon at the Super Pit)? ☘️ I think some in Denton have not yet factored in the Covid scare of the last 2 seasons for UNT basketball attendance. It’s still real to so many out there. I’ve taken every CV shot available & even had Sister Evangeline of the Big Easy bless a look-alike doll just for me (& to throw a curse on any school that has Bulldogs as their mascot).🙄(Just kiddin’—La Techsters, just kiddin’)🤓

I was not impressed with Memphis as I watched their SMU game last Sunday. The personnel we have is not meant for run & gun, but I think our Defense will allow us to compete with a large number of teams who’ll be in March Madness.

When UNT stops having only brief success in football & basketball & avoids going into that cocoon of more losing seasons than winning—then the approximate 1,000,000 citizens in Denton County, 150,000 in the fabulous college town of Denton, 42,000 UNT students & 300,000 UNT alums will have ample reason to want more DFW media coverage & FWIW—Coach Grant McCasland & staff are getting us there with MG basketball.
