After much due praise a couple of thoughts
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Just more ramblins' and shootin' the bull... Right now, we are a defensive team that probably has to score at least 1 TD for us to win against good teams. Also right now, we are a sometimes on/sometimes off offense. We have to have an "on offense" against Rice in 2 weeks. Our North Texas offensive line has been tremendous and deserves all the praise it is getting even from opponents. Our entire offense has had its bright moments, too, but we just have to have better beginnings by both our offense and defense in all our future games. I still think the skilled players part of our offense is in some semblance of a developmental stage even here at the half way point of the season. I don't think our offense has played its best game yet and just hope they are saving it for our upcoming, much tougher opponents. DT/#7 who I've been a supporter since last Spring/Summer must have a good game plan for him to be effective and for him to reach his maximum potential. When he's on--he's on...when he's not...he's not. (Where is Jerry Reed when you need him). Screen passes for the time being have become a scary proposition. First part of the game brain freezes now seem to be the norm such as.............Interceptions thrown to opponents w/o a Mean Green receiver in sight First part of the game way over-thrown passes to open receivers seem to happen early on, too. Passes that bounce off receivers hands and become interceptions (not the QB's fault) seems to happen early on, too. Why we have these first part of the game way too conservative "playing not to lose" jitters beats the hell out of many of us. It is still not too late for all that to change, though. This Mean Green football team looks to be very coach-able. When we play good teams all these 1'st part of the game heevie-jeevies have to stop or we won't have time to rebound from such mistakes (like in the Tulane game which was a game we really should have won which any unbiased fan would even probably agree). On paper we should beat USM but last time I checked games are not played on paper. The Rice game is a toss up IMHO albeit Rice will probably be favored by a point or 2 in Las Vegas. Last time we played a CUSA Rice team was at Fouts. They had CUSA speed and talent and we did not so we got beat at home that night albeit was a close game. I really think what kind of attendance we have at Apogee on Halloween Night is crucial for our team's success. We know it is very important for our coaches, our players and for darn sure all of us in each UNT-related constituency. We need not have too many empty seats for the national TV cameras as they pan our crowd, especially in the Wing Zone. I hope this is being addressed by our top officials this week (and hopefully much of last week for that matter). A team effort by all of us on this attendance challenge I'm sure would be most appreciated by Rick V and Company. -
A part of old Dallas gets all panicky when they sense North Texas is fixin' to pass their darlings and starts getting all this positive media pub we've been getting of late. (BTW, I'm watching the North Texas/La Tech replay on CBSS as I post). Hey! Allow even this Belo property to have an occasional brain fart with their poorly thought out overall rankings this week. (And come on, Vito, help us out, Man! Do us some old fashioned LBJ-style politickin' with your Belo buds for the team who gives you a reason to write and collect a paycheck). THIS: We are "not" behind SMU and many from SMU even know that by now. SMU would spend most of their season in a MASH unit if they had to play this Mean Green football team. SMU still gets the "local darllings" vote from the old nostalgic SWC crowd, too. To Usurp SMU Do This: Win! Recruit! Win! Recruit! Win! Recruit! GMG! PS: How's bout' this: If we get a bowl and we don't get Iowa, how's 'bout an SMU matchup (assuming SMU becomes bowl elgible)? I think SMU fans would come out of the woodwork for this kind a matchup--even against their country cuzzin's from Denton County. They'd love to kick our butts as much as we would theirs.

Other than our usual Neg Neds of whom the sky is falling in their Mean Green World 365 days a year, just who were all the other "many's" who wanted Coach Mac fired after the Tulane game and that after an impressive MAC contender Ball State win? And (besides at North Texas with a handful) when does any 1 game ever determine a coach's future anyway? Sure, the jury is still out for some with Coach Mac but all the positive indicators and trends are there concerning what he has done and is doing now at our alma mater in his Year 3. IMO, it would all but take a freight train hitting us head on or a team health epidemic for UNT to not make it to 6 wins now with 7 being more likely and even 8 possible with further development of this team. Think Halloween Night At Apogee Stadium!

II have no problem understanding why our program has been where its been for most of the last 20 plus years reading some of these posts. Let me count how many alums I know on this board who have seen more than 3 above .500 seasons in a row at North Texas or have seen an NCAA D1 Top 20 (25) ranking and then let me continue to say................I have no problem understanding why our program has been where its been for most of the last 20 plus years reading some of these posts. You get what you ask for or........at times we've gotten what we didn't ask for. GMG!

Phil, colors is one of those acquired kind of deals, but once one gets over the dreaded TLS, ie, tiny letters syndrome it's simply amazing just who quickly the colors will come. Think Halloween Night At Apogee Stadium!

On Coach Mac's Day 1 as North Texas HFC a few of us said Year 3 before he'd be able to start making hay with this program post-Dodge. Well, he is officially making hay with this football program--slowly and surely. Since Coach Fry tenure at North Texas this is the only North Texas HFC that I'd even think contract extension at this juncture. I do wish we also had a sizeable buyout clause with his contract, too, if we don't already. (I could be wrong, but at age 60 I think we have a good chance of hanging onto him compared to if he were age 50). Prediction: If North Texas goes bowling this year I predict it will be then that Coach Chico gets some interviews for a HFC's job with a job offer (or 2). Wnning does the darndest things for any football program and its athletic personnel. GMG! Think Halloween Night At Apogee Stadium!

laxtonto: it was just a promo idea per my PS toward bottom of my post! LOL! (Glad you like the idea, though, but one I predict will become another File 13 item from GMG.com but.......... none of us ever give up hope with such things, now do we)? No doubt about it, though, that all our Mean Green (insert a green heart) 's are in the right place. GMG! PS: Thing about it is, though, that the size of our crowd and the noise it makes on Halloween Night could mean the difference between a win or a loss. We have all seen what the 12'th Man make that the, uh, 12'th Player, ie, the home crowd can mean for the home team at a college football game. GMG ! !

This is just one of many proposed ideas that have come from this forum from various posters including this little ol' wine-maker....me. (The wine-maker bit from an old TV commercial, Young Gun'ners). __________________________________________________________________ Game Time: 6:30 PM..........North Texas Mean Green vs the Rice Owls......... A Nationally Televised Game.........Halloween Night ! .......NT Frosh have a "We Bleed Green" Cheer Practice starts at 5:00 PM or 5:30 PM before 6:30 TV kick-off. (We do not have "Yell Practices" at North Texas). Objective? A time for our huge UNT frosh' class to practice up for some key Mean Green yells which will be heard by a large national TV audience. ......Coordinated by UNT cheerleaders with assistance from other volunteer student group(s). All our 2013 UNT Freshmen Class will do is merely duplicate the Pep Rally they had the first week of our home season opener when over 4,000 UNT frosh showed up in 100 degree weather at the Apogee Stadium student side. Subtle Hint: It will not be 100 degrees on October 31'st. This Pep Rally: "We Bleed Green" T-shirts? Probably too late for that. GMG! PS: Just a promo idea for an important game, that's all.

Do Not Underestimate USM In Spite of Their Numbers and Because Of The Fact That From Now On................... WE ARE A TARGET! Think Halloween Night At Apogee Stadium!

If you think this site is tough check out USM's
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Folks, 8 under .500 seasons has been tough, but not even in my lifetime as a student or alum have we been winless going on 2 years in a row BUT.... .....If you think the Golden Eagles are going to stay down, then you have another thing coming atcha' like a freight train. North Texas needs to treat next week's game as if USM were still a Top 25 ranked football program as they were 2 short years ago and what they will get back to being once again......sooner than later. The USM of their Top 25 era is what I think we'd all like to see our football program really be like (again). GMG! Think Halloween Night At Apogee Stadium! -
Plus.....North Texas would have a reputation with some bowl officials (who know such things) that we do travel fans to bowl games. We did quite nicely on Tuesday nights back during the New Orleans Bowl era. What was it did the MGRN guys say on one YouTube, like 16K to 17K for one of those 9 hours away from the DFW Metroplex Tuesday night bowl games? Hello Bowl Officials! I would still shoot for 7 wins as an insurance policy, though. And if all falls in place can we not see 7 wins as do-able now? GMG! Dream Bowl Game? North Texas versus U of Iowa at the Cotton Bowl Stadium for Heart of Dallas Bowl Game. I think we would knock it out of the park with astounding numbers of traveling fans here in our backyard for that one. UNT Alumnus Association Prez' KRAM1 and associates would have a field day registering long time gone alums who haven't been on our alma mater's mailing lists for decades, right, Mark?

Need a proven fundraiser; not one who could be one or might be one, but a proven fundraiser who knows how to raise monies especially with Texas-based corporations and why? Like in sales, you always have real numbers to prove your point and to go by. Check out these 2 selected Texas university's 2012 endowment totals: TSU-SM...............Approx. $119 (+/-) UNT System.........Approx. $112 (+/-) Maybe Dr. Monticino is the one but if hired...he really needs to be the one. UNT cannot afford to screw up on this hire at this time in our school's history. We don't need a store-keeper...we need someone who will leave the store, be well grounded with Texas politics, Austin, etc, etc, etc, but moreso....on who will go out and raise monies. For whatever reason, we seem to have lost ground in this area among other Texas colleges and universities. I defer to the above 2 totals. From what I understand as far as all the various criteria of our reaching Tier 1 status as a full fledged research university (not just at the "emerging" status), it is UNT's present endowment coffers that has us sucking hind teat toward reaching that goal at this time. At one time it was just UH, Texas Tech and North Texas; well 2 of those 3 have attained full research university status while the state education officials have now added others for UNT to now compete for this honor. Can we over-come this? With the right hire I believe most of us believe we can. North Texas is still a university that sits on a gold mine, we just need the right miner with pick in hand who will not theorize about our "potential" but one who will actually go out and help our school realize the potential. For sure we are dramatically much further down the road in doing this today than we were post-presidency of Dr. J.C. Matthews, but looking at other schools like North Texas, we still seem to have lost some ground in this venture. GMG! -
Through the miracle of the cellular phone I just got a call from FFR and Silver Eagle who are enroute from the game and are now about 90 miles east of Dallas. They mentioned wanting to see the game again. Did yall see them on the TV broadcast? Wasn't CBS sport broadcaster Randy Cross a real jerk thru most of the first 3 quarters of today's game? I mean he couldn't find anything nice to say about North Texas until our team's play forced him to have to change his pathetic attitude. I think he actually had a hard on for Coach Mac (so to speak and symbolicly, of course) because he mentioned how his UCLA team went into Iowa City back in the day and got beat by the (then) Coach Mac's IA Cyclones. FFR and Silver told me the Public Address person at La Tech called us North Texas State, too. Of course, had most of us not made such a big deal over that the last 3 decades so few would be doing that present day. Sports officials at colleges are usually some of the most topical and "know what's going on around them" all the time people there are and I always thought..........."how stupid for these people to call us by a name we haven't had since the late 80's." Anyone got a TV Guide that would show when CBSS will be repeating our game (as I'm sure they will once or twice this week)? GMG!

From Vito's blog: 2:05 — In a side note, the same officiating crew that worked the Tulane game is working today’s game. And all of them with Louisiana home addresses, too, I presume?

Bum did a huge favor for an ex boss (who was then a public school teacher) back when they were in Nederland. Texas. That's about all I'm going to say about that. What an era! Never will forget that MNF game when "Luv Ya' Blue" made the national TV marquee. That was the night Earl Campbell ran with reckless abandon as they beat the Dolphins 35 to 30. That game had re-ignited my interest in "My Home Area" team who as a kid I saw play at old Jeppessen Stadium (later re-named Robertson Stadium on the UH campus). Bum had outgrown Bud Adams and was so much more popular so the OIler's owner further enhanced his role as Houston's version of Darth Vader by firing him. Adams was never liked in Houston almost from the git-go. When they left for Tennessee most attitudes in the Houston area was: "Good riddance, you Okie' sumbich." (Adams along with Lamar Hunt were instrumental in the founding of the old AFL). Memories, memories, memories.....Adams would give his high Oiler draftees a Phillips 66 gas station as a bonus. Never forgot the Oilers riding their buses into a packed out Astrodome late at night after returning from a Steeler's loss while Phillips cried like a baby he got so emotional. (My guess is that Bud Adams was in the Dome at the same time trying to find a way to sell popcorn to the crowd). I'm sure Coach Fry has shed a few over his buddy, too. Seems that Fry offered Bum a job as a coordinator at North Texas but my memory is getting cloudy as to the reason Bum declined--most likely the NFL. Can you only imagine being in the same room with Fry and Phillips as they reminisced and talked football? I would have paid admission to have been in that room. RIP, Bum! We always luv'ed ya', too.

Rick Gosselin (DMN) Article on North Texas

And Gray Eagle posted: Don't get me wrong. I am as appalled by our poor attendance as anyone and firmly believe that there should be a special promotion for every game until we reach 90% stadium capacity consistently. A Response: Jack, I look forward to the day we don't have attendance threads (unless we're bragging about how we now have to expand Apogee because we've had 20 sellouts in a row) but until then and..............because of our DFW location, we will have to have (as you call it) special promotions each Game Day at North Texas even when we're winning because...........................................of our location in the DFW Metroplex. Fry's AD successor at UNT Andy Everest once told several of us.........'If North Texas were only located 30 more miles north (Gainsville era) we would not have to lose so many students who merely go home or choose among about 1,000 other weekend event options in DFW." _________ 2 Eras of Mean Green Football: 1973 City of Denton...........39,000 Denton County..........99,000 UNT..........................17,000 2013 City of Denton...........120,000 Denton County..........770,000 UNT..............................37,000 _________ Fooled around with a lesser version of Photo Shop and came up with a True Texican MG poster idea on my Facebook page so.....................This.... or If any comments please keep them nice & civil. I know there are Fuzzy's out here in Weatherford and one in Denton. If you have a Fuzzy's in your area they have just about any cable sports station you want. They did out here for the North Texas/Tulane game and put our game on 3 screens. GMG!
