Dallas Morning News' Tim Cowlishaw on UNT
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
We get a little success and some of the area sportswriters (with a UT education to boot) come undone. LOL! And A Response To Cowlishaw's UNT question: And how many Top 25 (or Top 50) nationally recruited classes do most of the perennial 2'nd division Power 5 conference schools (like TCU, Iowa State, Kansas, Wake Forest, etc, etc, etc) ever get? And on the matter of "low end" bowl games? You mean the same kind of bowl games that many of the 2'nd division Power 5 conference schools (like TCU, Iowa State, Kansas, Wake Forest, etc,) will be playing in, too? Then do you call them "low end" when schools such as the aforementioned participate in that level of bowl games, Mr. Cowlishaw? (And all these years later, you still enjoying the broadcast quality of that UNT-graduated "Voice of the Texas Longhorn Radio Network", Mr, C)? GMG! -
OK fine...but what does the Farmer's Almanac have to say about Game Day?

Probably more exotic places to go bowling, but the HOD Bowl would do this for North Texas: (1) Give us a huge opportunity to have the most traveling UNT fans (ever) at an away game; some might consider that a no-brainer. (2) Give us a month to practice, to heal, to recruit special guests to be on the HOD Bowl sidelines (if the NCAA allows this for a bowl game) and to not only get ready for a New Years Day bowl game, but to also get a head start on Spring football and subsequently, the Fall, 2014 football season--as in getting a 1 month head start for both Spring and Fall? (3) The DFW media would have a difficult time ignoring North Texas for a HOD Bowl game since we would have the CUSA offices (in nearby Irving) touting this bowl (which will most likely replace the Liberty Bowl and become an AAC bowl after this season); our UNT sports information office will be pumping out to the DFW media (and beyond) press releases plus.......the HOD Bowl people themselves would obviously be touting their own bowl as well to this region and state-wide, (4) Must run but what did I miss here? GMG! PS: Anyone else realize that North Texas may very well be the only NCAA FBS school in DFW to go to a bowl this year?

With all the usual intra- conference smack aside....UTSA has warp sped into NCAA FBS very impressively much like others we have seen, ie, South Florida, Central Florida, UAB (when they added football) and what seems will be similar scenarios at Old Dominion and Charlotte. You all have schooled many of us with instant attendance building no matter how you did it. Just who is this us I speak of? Start with Houston, SMU and much of the rest of CUSA. Honestly, I don't want UTSA to come down to any of our attendance averages but the rest of us to get up to yours. We have no idea how many yall will travel next week when the Road Runners make their first trip to Apogee Stadium, but I think it will be more than any other of our opponents thus far. UTEP is down now but when the Miners are back in the "W" column they will come to Denton in droves--I really believe that. But isn't this UNT and UTSA thing really apples and oranges for the most part? I think North Texas fans/alums because of the nature of our long time history of playing intercollegiate football has had to endure (quite frankly) a road which became well traveled with some success but also with many dips, detours and all but "the bridge is completely out' situations. I also think many of our alums resent the fact that yalls road to the NCAA FBS came much too easy but, that is not any of your faults because of that, either. Truth as I see it? North Texas/UTSA will become one of the best "well attended" rivals in the new CUSA and even in the Southwest, but give us time to get to know you without our thinking we are being forced into having to kiss you (so to speak) on the first date, OK? Now lets talk chicken once again...will that be original or crispy?

Football vs. Library argument popping up again
PlummMeanGreen replied to JesseMartin's topic in Mean Green Football
JM, I do agree that North Texas seems to have gotten behind in our endowment coffers fund-raising and I will stop there with no comparisons to other Texas schools vying for Tier 1. The UNT College of Music for decades seems to be our school's main highly successful bell cow at our main campus in raising monies for their budget and projects so I still say that each of our other departments should try to copy cat them and thus this from the prior post: To The Willis Library Staff Who Make Us All Proud: Host one of your potential big donors in one of Apogee's luxury suites on Game Day; ie, a luxury suite (or group of seats) that I'd all but bet a DJ's gig pay check UNT AD Rick V would be more than cooperative with your staff to insure it to happen. -
Football vs. Library argument popping up again
PlummMeanGreen replied to JesseMartin's topic in Mean Green Football
Winning NCAA FBS football programs have increased donations across the board at most all their respective "schools of" and 'colleges of" academic departments A Symposium At The Willis" is not going to pull em' in from all corners of northern Texas with check books in hand, but an excited North Texas alum who just had an Apogee Experience most likely will, comparatively. UNT Library folks are isolating and demonizing the wrong dog on this hunt (if that is what's really going on). GMG! PS: To The Willis Library Staff Who Make Us All Proud: Host one of your potential big donors in one of Apogee's luxury suites on Game Day; ie, a luxury suite (or group of seats) that I'd all but bet a pay check UNT AD Rick V would be more than cooperative with your staff to insure it to happen. -

Ball State @ Northern Illinois (Tonight)
PlummMeanGreen replied to StealthEagle84's topic in Mean Green Football
North Texas is a better team today than the one who beat Ball State, lost to Ohio and then Tulane. Wish we could have the latter 2 back. . GMG! PS Did the 2 ESPN announcers who had their noses buried up the NIU QB's darkest places all night long ever mention that Ball State's lone loss was to the Mean Green of North Texas? If so, I missed it. -
C-USA needs a jewel among its members
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
CUSA needs 1 (preferably 2) of its teams to try to be MAC'ish and have a Top 25 team among its elite. That was what I hoped leaving the SBC would do for us (and I still think will) BUT................this season with the wins and the bowl choices have been most welcome. Only thing missing is sellouts for every home game and a Top 25 ranking. When all that happens....we will have officially arrived as the program most think we can be. GMG! -
Former Dallas Cowboy Super Scout Gil Brandt On University of North Texas Apogee Stadium: "It's a Taj Mahal. It is an unbelievable facility. I think I've been to every college stadium that's ever been built and this is really, really something special. I came up here a week ago just see it, and the attention to detail is unbelievable......... ___________________________ Former Big 12 Conference Interim Commissioner & NCAA Consultant Chuck Neinas Quote On Apogee Stadium: " I would say based on what I know about facility construction, they are getting a [great] deal for $78 million. It will be a top-notch venue that will complete their athletic complex." ___________________________ It is what it is... GMG!

Actually, the Central Track UNT Homecoming pics were posted on that "other" message board and even on that "other" new (not that new) message board by the Lone Ranger (a dad joke of sorts). http://mbd.scout.com...px?s=353&f=1260 Scout Forums ='s HS recruits who read their Scout bios and then read NCAA FBS schools Scout message boards such as...Inside North Texas? Harry, myself and a couple others were trying to keep the Scout board updated since many HS recruits-to-be read it and "Inside North Texas" had been dormant for so long. I didn't think that bode well for our school for readers to go on that Scout board and see a MG ghost town (so to speak). Even after posting a few "up-to-date" MG news the last week or so it became obvious that many Scout readers, ie, probably non-UNT affiliated (and possibly a few potential HS recruits as well?) seem to be checking out the "Inside North Texas" message board just looking at the views box. Myself and couple others (and anyone else who wants to contribute) are merely wanting to make sure that Scout readers were getting updated "positive" information about the Mean Green. Nothing more-nothing less. This posted on Inside North Texas about GoMeanGreen.com and the "other" board: Not sure why more U of North Texas Mean Greeners don't read (maybe even post from time to time) here other than the fact that Harry M. has a very successful (and long running) private run board and Scottie F. has another one in play, too. UNT Prodigal Son Junior Miller (1310 The Ticket) Comes Home
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Yes, GrayEagle, as I recall "THE" Prodigal Son was welcomed back to the family with open arms (and no matter what he had done and said). An unconditional welcoming home ceremony some might say? And Corby Robinson (sp?), too; you know the guy with the high shrill monkey laugh and like Junior also a big OU fan, but Corby attended TCU. Corby does have his weak moments, though, when he lets occasional praises for North Texas slip by. I first met Junior Miller at Bill Vogel's tailgate during the 1994 season when we met NCAA D1-A attendance criteria and he was quite pleasant and seemed excited to even be at the "See Ya' Later McNeese State" game. You know what folks? We have about 225,000 other DFW area alums we can work on. Let the Mean Green Bandwagon effect get all these other extremely cynical types back in the fold. GMG! PS: In recent weeks, we have seen an All Star cast of DFW Metroplex TV, Radio and Newspaper media types at Apogee with head phones on in the MGRN broadcast booth so......let's celebrate all of that would be my suggestion because almost every one of these media All Stars were broadcasting over the air waves how they could hardly believe what they were seeing and (HEARING) in Denton, Texas, America on Game Day. Even more amazing was how we had to have a winning season at North Texas for these media All Stars to show up at Apogee--many for the first time. I think we'd all agree that even more winning will do many more greater things for us at UNT. -
A fellow alum agreed with me yesterday that whoever is in charge of promotions and marketing at UNT should be (without delay and taking a week to think about it) pulling out the stops to fill Apogee for our team's last home game in 2 weeks. Coach McCarney may have glanced at Iowa State's attendance in the Sunday AM boxscore and in his former employer's game against TCU saw that the "1 win" Cyclones had 56,000 at their stadium last Saturday. I think that is the source of his frustration and not being able to understand why North Texas does not put 31,000 in our stadium every Game Day. Can you blame him? Coach Mac, his assistants and our Mean Green football team deserve no less. Because of where our school is located with impressive UNT constituency numbers at every turn, we do have all the necessary resources to make the below 2 listed criteria happen. Amazing that some would still attempt to make excuses as to why we cannot while UTSA, ODU (superb season tickets sales), etc, etc, etc,............are making it happen. The NCAA FBS programs that are moving forward, upward, etc, etc, etc, have done mostly 2 things: (1) Have impressive season ticket sales each Fall (2) Impressive attendance every Game Day (no matter the W/L record). UTSA has not received national pub because of their wins (which are slowly rising) but have with their impressive attendance numbers. Even one of their interviewers on the TV program that follows our FSSW show asked their AD (and I liberally paraphrase): "With how quickly we are advancing our football program, do we have another conference that we can upgrade to?" Those who meet the criteria as listed above go forward and usually into more high profile conferences eventually, but those who stay the same..........stay right where they are or where they've been.
-
North Texas cannot communicate with its alums unless they have said alums (young and old) most recent address. Since I graduated in 1976, I've moved 5 times. Each time it was my responsibility to make sure I was on their mailing lists. GMG!

Greatest halftime band performance
PlummMeanGreen replied to Dr. Seuss's topic in Mean Green Football
Great idea! Wished I'd though of it. Now let me think of something stupid & dumb to post to change the subject of this thread. -10 -
Oh crap! Are you Turd-Knockers United still going at all this? Haven't yall done enough to this thread already? What do yall do for an encore? Tell the world what great UNT alums you are in your very special most unique ways? Spare us all. TTG, seems to me that we have a moderator who wants to act quite childish to me (and others, by the way). Why don't you do Harry and some of us who don't like your goofiness and constant trying to impress with your $25 words a huge favor and resign your (I suppose) most important role you seem to have eve had in your lifetime. You are very biased, it shows and don't even try to deny it--not a good trait for a moderator most would think. And the political crap since you brought it up? You mean that group of pinkos up in D.C. that included one czar (for crissakes--what a name) who had to resign because he was an admitted communist and another staffer because she praised Chairman Mao? You talkin' about that crowd, O Wise Moderator? And do you mean this unique group we have (until they are hopefully & bloodless'ly soon removed) that spent about 1 minute thinking about national health care, its affect on the 40 hour work week, so small a number of physicians for 30 million new customers, etc, etc, etc and then how to change that which was not broken (but only needed tweaking) so someone could have a freakin' legacy? Well, it's going to be his legacy alright. (My main guy who I supported 2 elections ago, ie Herman Cain (a businessman--what a concept that would be for D.C., eh) would have been so much more traditionally presidential and closer to the middle of the aisle (like Bill Clinton) but then the Alinsky'ites with their Rules For Radicals bible got hold of Cain, too) That's all about that. TTG: O Wise Moderator: YOU! (a moderator of all things) Can we all collectively laugh now? And then you 2 partners in crime, too; that is, a couple of your impacted to the hilt with caca compadres who have ruined a thread begun with a sincere spirit of Mean Green support that all 3 of you get all goofy assed about one little historical aspects of "Come & Take It' of which yall didn't even know that slogans origin....neither does the numbskull poster from UTSA for that matter. THE TASTY GREEK (dare we ask for an interpretation of THAT); anyhow, you and your "2" compadres should see the private emails and a PM (which you and Cerebus should familiarize yourselves by the way) of support I've received from some who will not get on a thread that the 3 of you have totally ruined and ruined in the name of what & why? And Incompetent Athl. Dept? Coach McCarney is doing great in his Year 3 (as I predicted he would) and will save a few incompetents ancillary jobs because of it but I think our W/L records for the last 20 plus years speaks for itself for those ingenious enough to still use W/L records (as 99.0% of all NCAA FBS programs do)------------Of course, 20 plus years ago records would include UNT A.D. staffers who preceeded our present group. 20 years? Probably should have just said............most my entire adult life would have better covered all the mediocre and less years many of us have persevered for the most part. I think AD/RV has done a good job with facility building since we were about 25 years behind in doing that, but, as a 42 year close observer of UNT athletics I think he needs to do a better job of evaluating those he seems hell bent on keeping on our (ancillary) staffs at times who I (and others) still don't think are doing the best of jobs. As I said, others apparently feel the same way; that is ,those who aren't drinking buds' of key A.D personnel and who have lost complete objectivity. I don't party with any of them....I can find better parties to DJ and make money doing so. 2 Things: The W/L records over a period of time speak for themselves and attendance is something no one in that department wants to spend much time in doing adequate plannning? How can I tell O Wise Moderator One................too many empty seats most games, that's how. At this time, the Wing Zone should have one used canvas covering it with "Come & Take It" painted all over it! You like that, TTG, Cerebus and UNT23Fan or whatever your name is? Now you, Cerebus and UNTfan23 (or is it UNT23fan) do me a favor and go play hop scotch with each other. The rest of us will be fine w/o your counter-productive negative posts which are hardly pro Mean Green as far as adding to the spirit of a very importan Game Week. .And if you don't like me (as if I give a shit)----then come see me in person about that Thursday at Apogee and we'll talk about it. Can you do that? Now This...................ALL 3 OF YOU TURD-KNOCKERS UNITED GET OFF MY THREAD AND DON'T COME BACK YOU TOO LIBERAL TO FUNCTION COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE SUMBICH'S...........other than that-- Have A Nice Day!
-
Obscure? How would "YOU" define obscure? Making $250-$300 an hour makes obscure worthwhile for any DJ. Sometimes what you might call obscure we call and usually announce a song as............ "a blast from the past." Amazing how what some call lemons other can make lemonade, now isn't it? And you mention appreciation? Who the hell is seeking appreciation among a small handful on this board? Quite frankly (and FWIW), all the right people who count in my Mean Green World already appreciate me and I really don't need to add to the list. And for those who do know me they also know I'm not much for self-serving words, but out of 4 of us jawing back and forth on all this for what real reason I honest to goodness have no idea; anyhow, out of the 4 of us there is still only one that a UNT administration along with a pretty large committee gave a Ulys Knight Spirit Award to back in 1996. What would be the name of an award a few who have done their best to hijack a thread which was begun with total sincerity and in the spirit of school pride? Maybe.......................GMG.com Thread Destroyers and Just Too Liberal To Function Properly Turd-Knockers? Keep on but I assure you.........I will get the last word whether on this forum or elsewhere. (And are you employed by the UNT Athl. Dept. and one of which I said a few years ago that no one thought much of your job performance and that because no other school higher or lower than UNT was interested enough to even interview you)? I do have some from that group who do "NOT" appreciate me! LOL! (Ask me how much sleep I've lost because of that). Amazingly, the job performance of one Dan McCarney this Fall will add even more years to their (who the hell is working on our attendance) careers at North Texas. Think Halloween Night At Apogee Stadium!
-
As I was PM'ed by one of our crack moderators yesterday and that was for me to PM or email some things I post, so, uh...........this? To Cerebus and TTG: Why are you posting that which could have been PM's sent to each other? We all understand that yall are so much a cut above the rest of us here with apparent high IQ's and use of the KIngs Language so why subject all of us to your wordy tommyrot of which none of it is related to this thread? Are you not following the very rules of this board that you daily police and tell others when they don't? So deferring to the first sentence of this post: What's good for the goose is good for the gander, perhaps? Intellectualize on that, UNT's "Harvard grad" wanna'bes who I suppose get woodies every time they see a dictionary. Have A Nice Day! 500 UNT alums......
-
Confused and many why's: (RIce Owl fans reading this board must be laughing at our so intercollegiate athletics savvy and "intellectual crowd" over here) Why do we have a Boomer when UT was the first to have such a cannon? Aren't we being copy cats? Why did we once throw tortillas at Fouts after a MG TD when Texas Tech was the first to do that? Copy cats again? Why use a green and white Texas flag at a UNT football game when UT stretches a red, white and blue one out the length and width of their DKR Memorial football field. Why used a hand sign that looks more like we have leprosy than an Eagle Claw? Who the hell did we copy on that? (TCU's looks even worse....how does anyone know what a Horny Toad claw looks like since they are so miniature)? Bill Cosby once asked in a monologue back in the 60's: Why Is There Air? Once again.............500 UNT alums ='s 500 different ideas and directions; probably a reason we've been where we've been most of the last 35 years, 'ya think? Dividing and polarizing is already a tactic being used in Washington D.C....we should let it stop there and try something different at North Texas for a change as in..................solidarity of like thought and mind to reach a common goal instead of making fun of a simple idea done out of fun? A lesser fan or alum would have given up on all this a long time ago. Seems over 200,000 plus DFW area UNT alums already have or just never gave it a try period.
-
Just more typical solidarity from a UNT alumnus base that had it truly been a unified force 25 or so years ago, we could have demanded a Dan McCarney kind of hire then......but 500 UNT alums in one room will begat 500 different ways to hit the Big Time in the NCAA and that usually means you will stand in place nowhere close to the top (which we can more than relate to). And to our hardy handful of the PC-types and those who.............. take all things so literally that they take the fun out things only mean't to be done in the spirit of intercollegiate athletics & competition I will say this................... At the pre-Republic of Texas Battle of Gonzales was actually not the first time the "Come & Take It" slogan was used for a battle flag. The "Come & Take It" slogan was used in 1778 at Fort Morris, Georgia (American Revolution) and its very idea from whence the slogan come goes as far back as 480 B.C. at the Battle of Thermopylae. (from a website) "Come and take it" most notably used in the American Revolution in 1778 at Fort Morris in Georgia, and in the Texas Revolution in 1835. The slogan itself can be considered a modification of the response King Leonidas of Sparta gave to the Persians during the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. When he was asked that his men should lay down their weapons, he replied "Come and get them" NOTE: There are better academic links of this slogan's origin before Texas adopted it at Gonzales, but this link below I sorta' liked the baseball cap being the redneck, Tea Party kind of Nazi (so says some) that I am. http://rowdygentleman.com/products/come-and-take-it-battle-flag-hat/
