Interesting post on Washington State Pay Board
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
You are a student so how much could you possibly have left to bet? If we are in the HOD Bowl, we do need to find a way to make $75 tickets become affordable for about 10K to 12K North Texas students. Yes, that is a liberal estimate but look how many of em' went to the NO's Bowl back in the day as reported by many of you and FWIW.............we have more UNT students and even more UNT alums since we went to that bowl game 4 years in a row. Interesting post on Washington State Pay Board

I don't think Leach has the hold he once had on many Texas Tech fans who all but threatened suicide after he was fired. Kingsbury has all but ended that for their former coach. -
And I guess someone is going to post that there are tropical weather conditions in............... New York City?!?! As the sign near old Buff Stadium (long ago imploded home of the late, great Houston Buffs minor league baseball team) then located off the Gulf Coast Freeway used to say & what I'd bet will be the situation for the Denton Ryan/Cedar Hill football game tomorrow....NO GAME TODAY. That is not official...I repeat....that is not official......yet. Carry on... GMG!

WFAA George Riba: UNT waiting for word on Bowl
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Come on now, Bill, you didn't like that turquois golf shirt Coach Mac had on? Coach Mac is always wearing Mean Green gear is what's unusual about the Channel 8 interview with good ol' George Riba. (Gosh, I think Riba has been in DFW just as long as me--circa, 1972). GMG!- 16 replies

Imagine what tomorrow would have been like
PlummMeanGreen replied to UNT90's topic in Mean Green Football
Now that is what you call finding the silver lining around a dark cloud. If we get the HOD Bowl with the right opponent I'm still not sure which other CUSA bowl game would be as attractive--and not counting location, ie, Waikiki Beach, hula-hula girls, Polynesian Culture Center or whatever, either. -

UNT moves forward on Hotel and Convention Center deal
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Well, they are going to suck all the way back for another appearnace in the NO"s Bowl with about 40,000 of their fans. Doesn't sound too sucky of a situation to me at all. And concerning their civic venues located at their school's city of location? I don't really think I ever really suggested that as a reason to bring em' into CUSA but I think they should have been invited before Old Dominion, Charlotte U, HIllbilly & Moonshine U and anyone else because they have a bowl team every year, they got the attention of the poll'sters this Fall and got several Top 25 votes and............. Tulane U is going to the AAC. I don't think there are many on this board reading it the last several years who would disagree with UL, either; that is, over others who got invites. -
UNT moves forward on Hotel and Convention Center deal
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
ADLER, you already know I think you are a genius! And thus a reason to build an indoor practice facility close to the hotel/conventions center when its finally gets built, too? Is there room? And such a venue would need to match the brick (or general appearance) of the ones it would complement, too, right? -

MGT, I think it's visa-versa that is unless you are a NCAA FBS start-up program and then you can almost sweep the kitchen with most any transfers.

Byrd Wins! AT&T Player of the Week
PlummMeanGreen replied to GreenGuy123's topic in Mean Green Football
Phil, I would say "cheaters never win" but in your case and with your Cousin Guido over in Sicily still among us I choose not say it at all. -
Was driving I-20 yesterday from eastern Parker County to Ft Worth and back and saw Encore trucks all over the place;most likely from other parts of the state and adjacent states, too, for that matter. They have prepared for all this, folks.

We just have to do more than SMU for OOC games at Apogee. AD/RV did a good job in securing that series, but we can't stop there (and I'd bet he already knows that). We need to play schools who have been recently ranked in Top 25 polls. Notice I didn't necessarily say ranked, but recently ranked? Those kind of wins can get us more national attention, votes for rankings and then ranked, eventually. I envy what the MAC has done with their Top 25 voting constituency. It along with a fine NIU team got them a BCS bowl last year, now didn't it? Our culture has been not to even think of Top 25 rankings, but that part needs to change quickly if we are to remain some semblance of a future player at the NCAA FBS level with other possible opportunities for that future as well.

Imagine what tomorrow would have been like
PlummMeanGreen replied to UNT90's topic in Mean Green Football
Yes, Don, a most memorable game for all Texans to remember (or try to forget). And with all the ice projected for Saturday it would have been worse ((IMO) than "just" the snow we had when the Mean Green played Bobby Bowden's Florida State Seminoles at old Fouts Field back in the day. With snow at least you have traction, with ice all you have is your knees to grab as you bend over praying for dire help to keep from running into an 18 wheeler on the interstate to get to the game. I'm assuming the HS play-off game at Apogee tomorrow has also been postponed? Emmitt or anyone else who knows? -

What the City of Denton & UNT are doing looks darn fine to me. This is what's happening in Rajun Cajun Country (or something for us to compare to). Denton and UNT planners may want to take a few notes on some of the things Lafayette is doing. (Still not sure why U of L is not a member of the new CUSA, quite frankly). Layfayette's center is adjacent to UL's Cajun Dome but ours will be (somewhat) adjacent and very easy to walk to the 10,000 seat UNT Super Pit. Not all small to medium sized conventions have access to a 10K seat venue such as the Super Pit I think most would agree. (BTW, even the Super Pit could be used for additional exhibit space on the main floor and the huge square footage area on the lower floor, too). And no, Denton will not be vying for the humongous National Home Builders Trade Show, but there are more small to medium conventions out there that meets the eye that they will be in the running. I had such a list of those small to medium trade shows linked at one time but lost the link in a computer crash couple years ago. It was an amazingly long list of trade shows and I used that link on this board to show to a few of our usual 'nay-sayers" who said "Denton won't ever get 'no' convention" just how damn wrong they would be once again. http://www.lafayettetravel.com/groups-meetings/meetings-conventions/convention-facilities/convention-center -

Byrd Wins! AT&T Player of the Week
PlummMeanGreen replied to GreenGuy123's topic in Mean Green Football
We made that happen for him at the ballot box....He and the offensive line (who he always give the credit) made it happen on the field of play! Congrats, Mr. Byrd, Offensive Line and the Mean Green! (Yall, too, Coach DMac and assistants)! GMG! Trivia Question: Which of the 2 teams (UL & Cincy') where they just announced Byrd as AT & T Player of the Week does North Texas own the all time wins in our football series? (Answer in very small letters toward bottom of this page). Answer Below: The North Texas Mean Green owns the all time football series records over both Louisville & Cincinnati ! ! ! -
We've all seen the day when the forward pass at North Texas could almost be categorized as a trick play. Not my favorite kind of college football because I love the passing game. I loved to watch Coach Don "Air" Coryell-coached football teams when he coached the San Diego Chargers in the old AFL turned AFC then later when he was with the Cardinals. Coach Fry was widely known here in the Southwest as one of the masters of what he called exotic plays which most the time involved the passing game BUT................................. ....................I can't recall a time when I especially loved the running game at North Texas when we had Patrick Cobbs and Super Jamario Thomas running loose with both being the NCAA National Rushing leaders 2 years in a row, respectively. I still do not completely understand what happened to Super Jamario in the UNT weight room which seemed to all but erase any NFL-bound speed merchant talents most felt he had when he was on top his game, though. (At this point, really not sure I want to know, but I recall how sad we all were for such a good kid--now a grown man, of course). If we have that kind of running attack with RB's who are a half step to a step faster than most defenses again along with the occasional pass to keep em' honest on defense that can be as fun to watch as an all out Don "Air" Coryell kind of passing attack. Never thought I'd ever be able to say that but the kind of running game we had with Cobbs and Thomas really did it for a bunch of us back in that day. I took a fair weather UNT alum friend out here in Parker County to some of Super Jamario's games at old Fouts and he was simply amazed by what that kid could do back then. GMG!

Rice in C-USA Championship Hurts So Bad

(1) Looking at our present recruiting of whom most committed well before we ever knew we'd have a bowl game &... (2) ....looking at our present good recruiting class which I think will add significant quality (3 stars & up) to it post-bowl season &... (3) ....looking at 2014 transfer elgibles/RS frosh along with the QB's we have coming back this Spring means to me that... (4) ....we will have a most formidable and interesting football team in 2014 with much upside. GMG! -
Chuck Landon: If C-USA got wish, Marshall would host
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Houston is not as prone to have the bad winter weather we are up here in DFW. Can you imagine had we hosted this game this Saturday right in the middle of an ice storm? Shame they couldn't make a last minute move to Reliant Stadium. Rice U can afford their rent. GMG -
Thoughts on UNT vs. Navy in Ft. Worth? (Armed Forces Bowl)
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
MeanGreenMarine...you are a great American and I hope you get your wish on the HOD Bowl. Here is the last time North Texas played Navy at old Fouts Field with this YouTube vignette including the fly-over. It was a fun game to be at even though the Middies won the game and became bowl elgible after this win. Never seen so much offense by 2 teams in my life. GMG! -
You never know but If true and if this were somehow found out & then featured in an area BELO-owned sports page wouldn't that be one helluva' motivation for our masses to buy HOD Bowl tickets en mass translating into record breaking Mean Green traveling fans? Whatever SMU's influence is sure as hell doesn't translate into ticket sales at their Ford Stadium turnstiles. You "almost" have to feel sorry for all those schools who were once in the SWC that will be G5 schools the rest of their natural lives--UH included. I

Rice in C-USA Championship Hurts So Bad
PlummMeanGreen replied to TheNewEra's topic in Mean Green Football
Let me start counting all those who were ready to tar & feather both McCarney & Thompson out of Denton just last Spring. DMac started the QB who gave him the best season long shot to keep his job from being on the line next year; that is, with him knowing he would lose a whole bunch of seniors after this season. DT#7 is a manage the game QB who with the right game plan can have games like he did against Ball State. For our bowl game, we need to understand that whoever we play will know about our terrifically slow starts in the 1'st quarter and we will need to over-come it. GMG! PS: I see that Beyond the Green is on today at 4:00 PM on FSSW preceded by CUSA Showcase at 3:30 PM -
Yahoo! Bowl Projections- UNT left home
PlummMeanGreen replied to Green Nightmare's topic in Mean Green Football
To those of us on this board who were close to the scene back in that day we can (to the person) assure you that Hayden Fry did not turn down an Indy' Bowl invite because you can't turn one down that was never offered. To those saying he did: Why would Fry have turned down an invitation to any bowl game during an era when there were so few bowl games to begin with? 5 of Fry's Mean Green football teams would have gone to bowl games with all the bowls we have today and the criteria to get in a bowl. (Did you know that Fry once took a 4 & 6 SMU team to a bowl game)? Still.........that same Fall in Ruston, North Texas had kicked La Tech's butt 2 to 3 weeks before the Indy Bowl would be played and beat the Bulldogs (at their place) to the tune of 41 to 14 (or some score like that); Also, North Texas (not La Tech) had been ranked in a Top 20 poll that same season as I recall. IMO, it was just more Huey Long style crooked Louisiana politics (which seem to have made a come-back today nationally) which took over with the Indy Bowl officials creating a scenario as to where a much better North Texas Mean Green football team would not get the bowl invite.. If it was a matter that Indy' Bowl officials didn't think we would travel many fans then our 20,000 Mean Green fans we took to UT the Fall prior would have eliminated that idea. Easy to see why Fry would pack and leave after the next season. Not many years ago he said he'd even stayed at North Texas had only his teams been rewarded with bowl games. Well, let me think on that one a bit?
