DRC: Saturday afternoon bowl update
PlummMeanGreen replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
It is a problem that I hope the new UNT prez' will even address. Empty seats on televised games are a reflection on our school and worse.....us. What did yall think looking at Rice & Ford Stadiums today? They are 2 small private schools.....we are not. GMG! -
DRC: Saturday afternoon bowl update
PlummMeanGreen replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Agree, Harry. That Navy game at Fouts years ago was very much fun, too. (Heck, we'd even get another fly-over most likely). GMG! PS: Come on now, Michigan State! -
DRC: Saturday afternoon bowl update
PlummMeanGreen replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Could it be that our 1 season winning streak the last (almost) a decade has us with so few bargaining chips with the powers that be? Hence the reason why we need to lose our usual culture of 3 giant steps forward and 5 back. There really is something very positive for a program when it has about 4-5 winning seasons in a row. I thought the HOD Bowl officials at our last 3 games at Apogee was a clincher but now? ? ? ? Who the hell even knows. -
The ghosts of Christmas past? GMG! PS: I think UCF is putting the Stangs away in this drive (I take it back) PS 2: SMU should have left all the snow and sleet on the field and show TV fans why no one showed up. We would not have done much better today. Lest all have forgotten, the last December games we played were those 4 NO's Bowl games but...............in the Mercedes SuperDome. I have a 4 wheel drive vehicle that could not even make it up a hill on one of our country roads out here---nothing but a sheet of ice on that road.
-
I don't think SMU has "THAT" kind of pull especially since it appears to me that there are few (if any) apparent SMU'ers on the HOD Bowl's Board of Directors. North Texas has more star power this Fall, ie, a 1000 yard MG running back, nationally ranked return guy Brelan Chancellor, a ferocious, hard hitting Mean Green "D", etc, etc, etc and that (among other reasons) why I think the HOD Bowl people attended our last 3 home games (unless they suddenly over-night became Mean Green fans).
-
Not saying I don't believe you, but on what authority can you say that?
-
So if they veto'd Rice who would be their alternative team for the Liberty? What a dumba$$ bowl arrangement that is.
-
Anyone who has been in sales knows when you are not making sales in a particular territory that you simply move to another. No, not saying that we give up on Denton but we should move beyond the Denton city limits to where there are about 600,000 other prospects and that being in Denton County to sell our Mean Green product and I don't think that is or has been happening--at least on a regular basis with visable results. GMG! PS: Rice is kicking Marshall's arse FWIW...
-
Question: Now does the winner of this game most definitely get the Liberty Bowl?
-
Looking at December weather of late, it makes me wonder about CUSA conference championship games in the future. How much does CUSA really make from the TV people to have one? North Texas has not played too many December games and the last 4 we did play were in the Mercedes SuperDome way down yonder in New Orleans. Again...how much for a sliding roof on top Apogee Stadium?!?! LOL!
-
OK, Jim, now tell us what you really think about all this! LOL! (We've seen everything up there except childbirth, right DG)? GMG! PS: Will still never forget you addressing SMU AD Bob Hitch back in the Pony Express days pre-game in the tailgate area. Funniest darn thing I ever saw or heard! Then our buddy Rick "flying worm creator" Spears making a U-turn in the middle of a highway on the way to Floyd Casey Stadium in the early 80's with about 12 cop cars in sight wondering what in the heck they had just seen)? (We all had fun later that night on the Brazos Queen Riverboat as I recall--which back then wasn't a whole bunch of recall due to the inhaling of way too many margaritas). Did Rick S. or I ever tell you about the day he and I went to a Baylor/TCU game at old ACS sitting around all those Baptist preachers, ie, Baylor fans?
-
Aren't they already talking about going to an 8 team play-off? That would help the G5 cause substantially, but 16 would put the G5 group back in the ball game even more. . The 4 game playoff thing still ain't going to help the P5 crowd who always finish down the line in all their respective conferences no matter how they paint another picture or scenario to future recruits. (Did you hear that, Gary Patterson)? GMG!

SMU gives coach June Jones contract extension
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Who else would have really fit at SMU at this time than June Jones? Remember when Clint Murchison shocked our area and gave Tom Landry a 10 year extension when Landry and staff thought they were all out the door? (No, not comparing JJ to Landry here). Plus...today's weather (and field conditions) could have an equalizing effect at Ford Stadium therefore working to the 'Stangs advantage. If they win then they are bowl elgible. There will be no one at Ford Stadium today, but how many would have shown at Apogee if we had had a game as our fans would have had to sit on sheets of ice watching our favorite team play on sheets of ice? We've all at times poked fun at SMU's turnstiles count, but ours are hardly where they really need to be, either. I still want to see how our attendance goes up when we have 3 or 4 winning seasons in a row, though. ? How much for a sliding roof over Apogee? LOL! -
Obviously, that was Karl Benson's going away gift to the HIlltoppers. So sad...

Interesting post on Washington State Pay Board

Again, I defer to my post above on my senior moment. My bad... PMG -
Great stuff, Huff! I can remember one of my games when it was a Gulf Coast monsoon rain that created a quagmire on our home field which probably served as an equalizer and allowed our team to tie a heavily favored Van Vleck Leopards. GMG!
-
CRW: I would agree if not for all the back room bowl pickin' politics that can change things pretty darn quick.
-
Agree... The North Texas team that played Ball State and Georgia (the first 3 quarters) could give several ranked teams some big trouble (and maybe even a loss). Hope we are saving our best for last.

No matter which bowl, it's a win-win for our Mean Green football team and the coaches. GMG!

All is quiet (and powered up) here on the western front.

If I can figure out a way to get some red and green in these pics I may now have my official 2013 Christmas cards to mail out very, very soon. (I jest) GMG! PS: Totally unrelated..................but I've been watching the National Geographic Channel on the Kennedy assassination (I'm a boomer' & hooked on that story--sue me).............. but have seen a video I've never seen showing long time former Mean Green Radio Network play by play man Bill Mercer giving a televised report on that day's events in Dallas and when he worked for KRLD-TV. I had seen other videos of Bill when he was in the hallway of the Dallas Police Station when they had just brought Oswald in from the Texas Theatre. So glad our UNT athletics leaders and (apparently) the present MGRN guys led the way to get that Apogee Stadium media room named after Bill Mercer. Best I recollect, he is now in his 90's.

And the wow factor can never be under-estimated, especially when you can put your HS & JUCO recruits on official visits in that hotel over-looking Apogee Stadium. GMG!
