  1. And if I were a bettin' sort of guy I'd bet we will have a Mean Green QB or 2 who will be able to do the tossin'. This is the kind of year you wish like in the old days you could recruit as many recruits as possible. I remember reading Denton HS Bronco alum the late Gary Shaw in his NY Times best selling book from many years ago, ie, "Meat On The Hoof" about Longhorn football during the DKR era; anyway, Shaw wrote in his book how UT coaches used to recruit some kids knowing good well they would never start for the Horns but they didn't want schools like TCU, SMU and Baylor to recruit them, either. Not fair for those recruits at all, but that is how the Big Boys all used to do it back in that era. I'm glad that era is over and I'm glad North Texas never had such a recruiting modus operendi as that, too. GMG!
  2. Glad our cuttin' horses can cull some of the best steers for someone else to try to rustle. Most kids as I understand it, though, and from some of this board's recruiting experts actually follow up with who they made their first commitment and because of that that I think we will be OK with most our recruits. No, we won't keep them all but some of the others schools doing the rustling won't keep all theirs either; in fact, won't some of their recruits end up transferring to, uh, North Texas? GMG!
  3. Any count on how many we have that may not have posted, Silver Eagle or FFR?
  4. And when Skillerns Pharmacy was across the street in what is now the "Panchos" shopping center?
  5. As Molly Brown (Kathy Bates) told Jack in the movie Titanic as he asked which silverwear to use she said: "Work from the outside in?"
  6. First of all and as I know this boards founder Harry M. would also tell you and especially to all of you newbies on GMG.com. Nevertheless, this forum is also interested in what takes place with the academic part of our school as well as our standing with similar metropolitan-located universities statewide, regionally and nationally. Most all of us hope that under Dr. Smatresk's leadership that our school resumes full speed ahead with our reaching Tier 1 research status. All that which a state education board started with originally were just UH, Texas Tech and North Texas; the former 2 are already there and since that took place and maybe because of our delay in attaining it (?) other schools were allowed to jump on this Tier 1 challenge as well. (Wonder why the state education board really dropped the exclusivity part with the original 3 schools in this Tier 1 venture in the first place is a question I've had for awhile now). Is it really true Dr. Smatresk and his staff raised almost a half billiion dollars while at UNLV? No bout' a doubt it, what we are doing in Dallas in the Cotton Bowl Stadium in a series of days leading up to New Years Day would have made for a good start in a sort of unofficial feeler gatherings with Dr. Smatresk; that is, with his meeting a few of our Rich, Famous & Interested In UNT as future serious potential donors for the Tier 1 cause. Ask other donor-successful NCAA FBS level schools just how important athletics has been to all their respective university constituency's coffers. Only wish Dr. Smatresk were on our payroll on New Years Day instead of that other school, but who would ever know about a few secret bowl week get togethers with potential Big Time donors and meeting at an impressieve downtown Big D location like (lets say) the Adolphus Towers office building (where I had a friend who used to office there in what now seems like another lifetime ago). Incoming UNT president Smatresk helping us attain Tier 1 for North Texas and then just maybe the rest might very well be called clear sailing? GMG!
  7. Ditto & especially you, Phil! (is that there one of those double redundancy thingies' on the Phil part; you know a "ditto" and then a "Phil" again)? GMG!
  8. From what I understand, he is still on the UNLV payroll and stil being paid to do his job (and ballyhoo the Rebel Nation) while there. In fact, hasn't it been written that he will still be at the HOD Bowl game as UNLV's president? I think our BOR's have heard all the good stuff they needed to hear from him and so we will all likely have to wait before all that trickles down to us, right?
  9. I've been an NCAA college football fan since I was 13 years old (50 years ago) and a reasonably close follower of all things North Texas football for most of the time since August 2-a-days, circa 1973; and what I'm going to say may be one of the most profound things to ever come from this keyboard but it's like this: You can't ever have enough quality potential D1 QB's because one day your cup runneth over with how many you have in camp and then before you know it----you are down to just 1 or 2. Time to shuffle our 'ships around to make room if this kid is good. (Of course, I was just kiddin' about all that profound business). GMG!
  10. We've all seen walk-on's become All Conference performers at North Texas thru the years. You have to pull for these kids to succeed and I know most all on this forum will. Good luck, Cody, and welcome to the Mean Green Nation!
  11. Thank you, MeanGreenRoadRunner.
  12. The inheritance still hasn't come through for me, but $75 is pocket change compared to all other forms of entertainment surrounding New Years Eve and New Years Day. How many times do we get to surround those 2 timelines with our alma mater's college football team and at a bowl game to boot? If you ain't planning on coming to this, you should change your plans. (I'm sure some of you really cannot but for most of you it's not $75 dollar tickets preventing it). Most of our fans don't have to pay for airline tickets and pay for hotel space for more than 1 night like they might had we traveled out of state for a bowl. Don't really know how much easier this could be for the MG Nation unless they put the the football field in some alum's back yards for this game. Of course, then some would have to get off the living room couch, walk thru the kitchen and then walk clear out to the back yard patio to view this bowl game. With decent weather we will have a good crowd but we have to all make sure we're all there to have that good crowd. This one will be a true team effort from every sector of the Mean Green Nation, Denton and Denton County GMG!
  13. Right on, CMJ! If ULL can get (a supposed) 40K of their fans for a NO's Bowl, then North Texas (even with a higher priced ticket for non-UNT students) should still be able to beat the Cajuns' numbers. Of course, they have had more consecutive winning seasons of late but should that really matter? Sure, all the stars will have to align for this to happen but never say never for this New Years Day bowl game opportunity. One big advantage for North Texas is that fans, students and alums can tie their New Years Eve and/or New Years Day celebrations around a bowl game involving our favorite North Texas Metroplex college football team. I have a DJ gig on New Years Eve so can't make it to Big D that evening but I've already ordered my HOD Bowl game tickets. There'll be 12 from our group sitting together. ? Will also be Interesting to see how many of our "attend bowl games only" North Texas alums from across the USA who many of you talked about during 4 NO's Bowl game last decade show up in Big D, too Granted, "Big D" is no Honolulu or Pasadena, but it is head and shoulders above most other bowl host cities in the USA. Both HOD Bowl teams from U of North Texas and UNLV will see that firsthand with a fun week of bowl activities, tourist trips and some great eating at a Texas steak house or two as well. _____________________________________________________ 2 Prime Groups Who Need To Buy HOD Bowl tickets: And those are (1) UNT students with their discounted $25 tickets and... (2) "Day of game" walk up ticket sales with most of that group wearing green. It will be those 2 groups who take us over the top if we go over the top. __________________________________________ It's been well state that UNLV will not bring as many as a the usual HOD Bowl opponent Big 10 (or Big 12) school would have, but it is what it is and the UNLV Rebels will make for a good bowl game matchup for the Mean Green and may bring more than we anticipate plus............. ..................our New Years Day bowl game will be the first that American college football fans will be able to view at 11:00 AM CST as they drink their Bloody Mary's right before their NY'sD brunch. GMG!
  14. North Texas should aim high and then get what it can (with starting ability) with a JUCO defensive lineman (or 2) every recruiting season. Haven't had a JUCO DL with significant quality since Michael Pruitt of last decade. Of course, as I recall he made a JUCO All American team, too. We seem to have no problem getting RB's, DB's, LB's and even OL in recruiting or FBS transfers, but not so much with defensive linemen. Of course, outside the usual Top 25 or so schools, we are not alone with this problem. Annabel Stephan of Scout Recruiting Service (check it out when you can---it is not mean't to be a competing forum with Harry's board, either)....................anyway, Scout's Ms. Stephan was in the Apogee Stadium press box last Monday for 2 play-off games and posted on Inside North Texas that one particular very high quality DL playing in one of those game was very interested in North Texas. GMG
  15. Rick, when do they need to have a final tally and some cash in hand? You going to take your family on this bus venture, too? Get back when you can. GMG!
  16. Hey everybody! Listen to me now just one more time here: 1 "Eastern"SPN online rag sports writer says we have the worst bowl game among them all. So what? Between UNT and UNVL we have a handful of teams going to bowl game in the next few weeks that we beat during the regular season but I'd bet you a Lone Star beer that that ESPN writer doesn't know it. Had any one of that's ESPN writer's precious darn-yank schools like PItt, Boston College or Syracuse who were said to be highly interested in coming to the HOD Bowl 10 days ago to play a Conference-USA school..... .......anyhow, had any one of those eastern teams been the Mean Green's opponent our bowl's stock would have amazingly shot up, right? Go figure? Some of these EasternSPN guys too many times hate or despise just about anything that has to do with the Lone Star State no matter what the event or the subject. Why? Get your non-revised history books out and discover that all over again for yourself. BEAT THE HELL OUT OF THE UNLV Rebels !
  17. Still love the Mean Green 8 play goal line stand against the Rice Owls on national TV with that final play of the stand at 1:18 on the video. GMG!
  18. Spot on, Mr C! We have no choice in this conference but to do just that. Yall ever run track? Well, a certain Lone Star State based school has become our new rabbit whether we like it or not and it will be the one school that many on this board will eventually begin to compare our regular season attendance to for the next few crucial years. I'd bet Dr. Smatresk already knows those numbers already. Had North Texas just copy cat'ed what out-going CUSA school ECU did the last 30 years the Big 12 could have very well had us on their short list. IMHO...........DeLoss Dodds reluctantly rubber-stamped a second ex SWC private school for their membership addition. (Of course, bet ol' DeLoss already had his retirement date set when all that took place and didn't care as much as to who the Big 12 added to take TAMU's place, either). GMG!
  19. A dramatic part of any movie...........................No-ooooooooooo! Ordered mine today! Good luck! Sorry you can't make it.
  20. chitownrebel, reverse that score and then it will be just fine! Should be a fun game for all. Don' think we should put much stock into what "1" ESPN online rag reporter says anyhow. He probably thinks we still have Indian depridations and ranch massacres a-goin' on down here in Texas anyhow. GMG!
  21. Now that's more like it!
  22. Can't play yalls game over but the home team that day was as flat across the board as I've seen them for a home game since Apogee opened. Still....yall won--we lost (albeit the last few seconds of the game got very interesting). I think North Texas will bring 3K to 5K fans to the Alamo City next Fall. I want to go to that game because paybacks can be hell. I also want to see if I can help PeeWee Herman find his bicycle (somewhere in the basement of the Alamo)? GMG! oldguystudent, you are one hellvua MG fan and poster, but I think those pics on a few personal lives a bit much? Just my opinion.....Carry on!
  23. Injuries, grades, girl friend problems and sometimes family concerns of an emergency nature? UNT coaches know what they need because of information we are not always privvy' to. GMG! PS: Kansas State sure had a good year with their JUCO QB.
  24. IMO....a great post! GMG!
