UPDATED DEC 16th - UNT FB 2013-14 COMMITMENT/SIGNED LIST (18)
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
This recruiting service and others last year did not figure in our 8 NCAA FBS level transfers and even this year.................our 4 star High School All American linebacker transfer from Oregon U who is in school and will be padded up for Spring football. I know, these are HS players on most of these recruiting service lists but there are so many other variables involved in a school's entire recruiting class such as JUCO transfers like QB Josh Greer? State of Texas has 160,000 kids playing HS football. There are still too many Drew Brees out there to be discovered which not one Texas based FBS school discovered his senior year at Mission(?) HS. Moral of All This: Don't put your money on these 24/7 rankings because I'd bet none of their staff last summer had North Texas playing in a New Years Day bowl game, either. GMG! -
Posted this yesterday on another thread but a North Texas alum told me just yesterday that he got his quarterly North Texan magazine in his mail box......yesterday. Our fellow alum also said on the back page of the North Texan was nothing but HOD Bowl game promotions and how alums could get their tickets for the game. This is huge since thousands of our alums all over Texas and even the world receive the North Texan. GMG!

Rebels bowl opponent UNT happy with ticket sales
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Not what we all wanted (of course) which were much earlier ticket sales totals but I always thought most of the tickets that will give us the crowd HOD Bowl officials expect from us will be sold 1 week prior to the game---IMO. Parents of UNT Students: 2 tickets for Johnny and Suzie would make nice Christmas stocking stuffers. Ad nausem with this, but day of game walk up ticket sales IMHO will still be most important. Who knows what the City of Dallas delivers from its employees or what Joe College Fan living in DFW will do, either. Except for most of us on the forum and because of a 92K seat stadium, there will not be an urgency from our casuals and borderliners to buy tickets pre-Christmas. If the stadium would have been the size of Amon Carter where MUTS plays Navy, maybe more urgency from our group then. GMG! PS: Again, our fan base once travelled 17,000 fans down to New Orleans for a Tuesday night bowl game. I base my good feelings for what I feel our fans will do on those numbers and a much closer to our fans bowl game since our entire constituency is even larger than it was back in that day. -
Well, North Texas needs to get "un-awful" pretty damn fast because we know others already have--some who are fellow conference-mates. I hope this new UNT prez will put a few feet to the fire so we don't get left behind like we did in the Sun Belt our last almost decade in that league. Then.....enter the extended contracts to perserve all of this? Sorry, mates, that I have to be so blunt but you wake up one morning, you're suddenly 63 freakin' years old, add Type 2 "D" onto that and then you look back only to see that our alma mater's athletic program has for the most part been squandered for many of our entire adult lives. Hardly what any of us had in mind. You find 1 positive for every 100 negatives and then.........enter the vaunted extended contracts? This One Deserves An Extended Contract--Don't Blow It, North Texas: Dan McCarney has been a godsend but we haven't seen too many ancillerary staff angels helping him out that much in Denton in ticket sales/promotions and then we're told low ticket sales over the years are suddenly all our alum's faults when most all of us have already purchased our tickets? Talk about your all time classic case of pass the buck. An End'er: It's an amazing concept but most NCAA FBS schools hire and keep effective season tickets sales and marketing staffs and at schools like North Texas...............they don't get their jobs done by sitting around very comfortable offices playing on their laptops while philosophizing about how they wish more fans would come in and buy based on the non- success of this athletic program for most of the last 30 years. Again, sorry I have to be so blunt...it comes with age and disappointment I suppose.

A fellow alum said he got his North Texan alumnus magazine today and on the back page it had a great promotion of the HOD Bowl game and where to purchase tickets. Now that is good thing because that magazine goes out to thousands.

Josh Greer talks about decision to commit to UNT
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Josh Greer, North Texas QB! -
Super alums-to-be and super MG fans! You 2 X's 15,000 + ticket buyers and we will make many, many people proud, especially Coach Mac, the Mean Green and HOD Bowl officials. Other bowl officials will be looking at this game very curious to see just how strong the Mean Green Nation is (and in our backyard for a bowl game to boot). The new UNT Prez who will be at this game but still on the UNLV payroll will also get his first look at the Mean Green Nation and fan support. We don't need to let him down for damn sure. GMG!

Those "less than" 500 tickets to UNT students should have been sold by mid morning or noon today if we are truly expecting a large UNT student turnout........ .......a 2'nd allotment of HOD Bowl tickets for our students is what I think some of us were wanting to hear about. One has to think for a New Years Day bowl game that we could get close to at least 10K students? $25? The price for some to go out for beer and pizza? 1 week of Starbucks-priced drinks?
-
And any word on how overall ticket sales are going, particularly how many total tickets UNT students have purchased thus far? GMG!

MGB: UNT picks up second key JC target
PlummMeanGreen replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Then congrats! Coach Canales! Chico is the Man who got his man on this recruiting venture. Last I heard, he has 3 years of elgibility and will be playing Spring football with the Mean Green in a few months, too. Again,,,,,,,,,,you can never have enough QB's because it's amazing how so quickly a team can be down to just 1 (or 2) due to injuries. I mean look how quickly Dajon got hurt and on that theme, has he received his medical RS? -
Favorite UNT Football moment
PlummMeanGreen replied to ChristopherRyanWilkes's topic in Mean Green Football
Agree, Huff, with the Rice game this Fall on ESPN Halloween Night running a close 2'nd place for me. For that New Mexico State game in 2002 (which I've got its highlights on DVD) many of us never dreamed we'd hear Fouts Field get so loud. We even had bigger crowds at Fouts that never got that loud but like you said so much was on the line. It was a fun night to be a Mean Green fan! GMG! -
MGB: UNT picks up second key JC target
PlummMeanGreen replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
This could be big if it holds and it seems it will...he had some pretty important last minute offers. Me'thinks something is going on as to where we could be losing one of our QB's to grades or maybe something of a personal basis? Then...maybe nothing in that area is going on and we just need a QB who has played at even the JUCO level with good recruiting guru ratings from those who saw him. Congrats, Coach McCarney! "YOU!".............are doing your job (as many of us thought you would from Day One). GMG! -
Just more scattershootin' on this and other things..... Did Texas State-Aquarena Springs tell this recruit although they were 1 of 5 SBC schools that were bowl eligible which did not receive a bowl invite. either, that they were the only one of that 5 who would have told the SBC commish' that they would have elected to stay home anyway? Spin-meisters at work all over the Lone Star State of late. To The Fry Haters Who Still Love & Genuflect To What We've Had Most of The Last 30 Years: Fry would have never scheduled down with another Texas school that has no FBS history and who we might recruit against. Of course, we had to play conference-mate UTSA but none of us liked the results--some older alums all but had their spirits quenched over that loss, too. I hope our present crowd in charge doesn't start scheduling down either with a bunch of former Lone Star and Southland Conference schools--even schools's like Stephen F. Austin State U who just yesterday demoralized our alma mater's basketball program yesterday. Yes, a UNT BB program that has had one of the best on-campus BB venues in the entire Southwest for 40 years and even today still the envy of others but still a basketball program that most of the times acts like we never left the Men's Gym. For North Texas, just where is the pay-off to schedule and then get beat by these schools? Let all those schools fend for their own scheduling futures and we will ours, right?. (And that since we had been told the investment of Apogee would see better OOC schools than Fouts ever did, right)? Have we really? And CUSA Commish' Brit Banowsky need not get us a bunch of bowl games that have SBC opponents, either, because if that becomes the new upcoming normal, then what the hell did leaving the Belt do to upgrade our program from a competition standpoint? The regional foes in CUSA are great but let it stop with that as far as future OOC schedules are concerned. TCU had a definite plan to remove itself from all this hodge-podge of way too many FBS schools in Texas and I think those who can look beyond their nostrils & today would have to admit that it paid off for the Froggies quite well. Those schools who have plans, marked, improved attendance numbers and win annually move up the NCAA totem pole; but those who don't wonder why no one in higher echelon conferences ever talk up their school's name or show interest. Texas State is stuck on an island as the only SBC football playing school in Texas. At North Texas............we've been there--done that and we have now passed that torch to Bobcat Country and will just go ahead and let their school play the Lone Star State's & Sun Belt's version of Gilliigan's Island. 3 giant steps forward but then going 5 giant steps backwards is a mode of operation UNT athletics shouldn't want to keep re-visiting as we have so many times in our past. As G.H.W. Bush used to say: "Wouldn't be prudent." GMG!
-
Thank God for that, too. It can make a big difference as all can see now. Still not sure why we did't do this kind of hiring 20 or so years ago. It could have really saved us much grief and prevented the dummy-ing down of our football program as to we where we would accept just about anything that was dished out to us. GMG! PS Unrelated to thread and wish it were different, but they just don't hand out NCAA national championships for keeping your varsity venues construction updated, either. They just assume most all NCAA FBS level schools are already supposed to be on top of that kind of thing as it is. GMG!

Sad...

Nothing new about any of this....it's happened almost from the beginning of the NCAA's modern era in the 50's. Tech? Great school! Many friends of mine went there & some of you who I know with close ties did too BUT......... how many SWC and Big 12 championships have the Red Raiders had since 1956? Not mean't to be negative with that comment but it is what it is. Still hoping the QB and another special player from Desoto HS are in the mix no matter what we've read from the TCU board, too. GMG!
-
North Texas has never been on NCAA probabation. Most the schools from the old SWC have and some of that group were on probation several times. That's about it. GMG!

Please wear GREEN at the Bowl Game
PlummMeanGreen replied to greenjoe's topic in Mean Green Football
Heck, what is the forecast for New Years Day anyway? I spoke to a TxDOT employee the other day who said this last ice spell was our all time worst for ice buildup. I told him we'd had several of these over the decades but he responded to that with this: "Usually, its just 1 or 2 inches of ice on our interstates but last week we had an unprecended "4" inches of ice covering most of our DFW area interstates" (He had worked for TxDOT for over 40 years, too). GMG! PS: Darn shame those who were responsible for the Cotton Bowl re-do didn't get their wish (or funding) for a sliding roof. -
ESPN- Mack Brown to Resign (to Coach Bowl)
PlummMeanGreen replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
Is there really ever any nice way to fire somebody when their time is obviously up and they've all but worn out their welcome? You ever had to fire somebody in your profession? It's not the easiest thing to do--many times a most unpleasant experience for all concerned. Sure, give such an employee a chance to resign to save face but the results are still the same. GMG! -
Please wear GREEN at the Bowl Game
PlummMeanGreen replied to greenjoe's topic in Mean Green Football
I will be wearing Mean Green gear most every day until New Years Day...then I'll wear green on that day, too. Not that difficult a thing to do for most of us on this forum. GMG! PS: Had 3 already today see my Mean Green T shirt which I wear over my black long sleeved sweat shirt show me a thumbs up and 1 upbeat and positive comment about our bowl game as well over at Walmart. Told one Walmart employee whose daughter is a UNT frosh how I'd bet she would like an early Christmas gift of 1 or 2 "$25" tickets for the HOD Bowl game. He said he might need one of those for himself. He had no idea our bowl game was at the Cotton Bowl stadium and was duly impressed. -
Wrong on both accounts.... It replaced the "Yall Come Back Saloon" where Miss Kitty had her first job before she moved to Dodge, KS. GMG! PS: I know, it's 3:17 in the AM

Sometimes college football can be a damn soap opera. Hell, even better than a soap opera. -
Seems one of this threads visitors is being ignored to me.

Rudy, that was back before the NCAA stipulated that a school could only give out 30 football scholarships per year. As I recall reading Shaw's book years ago, it was not uncommon for schools like UT to sign over 100 kids to scholarships in one recruiting season. It was the beginning of the haves and have nots in many ways although the NCAA at least stopped that part of it. So today's football scholarship limits of 30(?) per recruiting season would prevent the UT's of stockpiling additional recruits like they used to in the 60's since today they have to make every letter of intent count for their own future football program's success. GMG! PS: Hey UTSAMarineVet09, I found this on another recruiting board.....is this fairly correct? UTSA only has anywhere from 9-12 scholarships for this class. The mass exodus will be next year with currently 37-39 scholarshiped juniors. 5 current commits and all are rated 2 Stars by our National Recruiting Analysts.
