This will all boil down to who wants to come out and support their school's football team at the historic Cotton Bowl on New Years Day. A New Years Day bowl game seems to have gotten much of our fans undivided attention adding to the a festive bowl environment. Your are right, Dallas cannot compete with the Big Easy as a destination city, but I think Big D's locality to where most North Texas alums, students and fans live will more than make up for an all night drunk on Bourbon Street. Just my .02. GMG!

North Texas has already sold 10,000 with its 1'st allotment and are now on the 2'nd allotment; the city of Dallas has sold 5,000 (as reported last week----not near what Fort Worth has sold to the locals for their bowl game but it is what it is) so what some are saying now is we don't sell but another 1,000 tickets between today and New Years Day to reach 16,000? I don't think so. NOTE....Warning: Don't read this next sentence meangreener & MG61! BUT..........you say some things over and over till it sinks in to the few who need to be reminded and a few newbie posters but..................... we traveled 17,000 Mean Green fans to a U.S. major city 8-9 hours away from DFW last decade. Has all of that group bitten the big one and we won't see any of em' at a DFW bowl game on New Years Day? Case closed (and insert major expletives). Must be an especially good blend of tobacco a few seem to be smokin'.here. GMG!

And from those 200,000 plus DFW area UNT alums all we need is 10,000 (ten thousand) from that group to have SRO, ie, standing-room-only at Apogee Stadium every Game Day.as I look at this Falls per game turnstiles average. We even have a school enrollment of almost 37,000, Denton at 120,000 population along with Denton County at approx. 700,000 to help us get those 10,000. WWUTSAD to get those 10K other than say..........."piece of cake?" Yet no school gets all their alums on board.....not even all our fellow Texas-based universities along with all their Walmart T-shirted would-be alums. If UNT had only sold a similar number of football season tickets this Fall that 2 of C-USA's newest members that would have provided a nice base of fans (and early bowl ticket sales) as to where there would not be near the concerns for what our attendance will eventually be on New Years Day. Even w/o a P5 foe that HOD officials were supposed to have produced as our opponent along with all those P5 school's traveling fans I believe UNT will still be fine on Game Day if all falls in place that I think will fall in place. I mean what would adding 15K Big 10 school traveling fans have done for our total bowl attendance if we would have been so lucky this time around? All this is hardly rocket scientist, folks. You have to have an effective sales & marketing staff in almost every kind of business there is in the USA (who are a success) if you want to separate yourself from the rest who don't and who are not, and in the NCAA especially with all the respective school's accountants and budget-planners. Nice touch, meangreener, very nice touch! That link reads very well and makes me think we still have hope with Denton now and in the future. What a feel good story that would be for so many of us. When I first enrolled at North Texas back in Janurary, 1972, believe it or not but our school's enrollment at the time was pert near half the population of Denton. It was 17K UNT students and 39,000 population as I recall. (Keep in mind I didn't even include Texas Womens University's almost 10,000 at that time, too).

This predictable because the City of Fort Worth & TCU do a good job of selling tickets to the locals for "THEIR" bowl game. FW and TCU don't want to be embarrassed with a small crowd at ACS.. Some of you told me you went to this bowl game last year and saw all this FW & TCU civic spirit firsthand. Said right after we were given a G5 opponent that in hindsight with HOD not really (seemedly) hustling to get our school a P5 opponent that Coach McCarney and the Mean Green would have been better served playing Navy at ACS. With what we have sold thus far and will continue to sell, we would be looking at Standing Room Only for that FW bowl game and I say that being as serious as a heart attack. GMG!

And Fox Sports Randy Rodgers plugs (not once--but twice) North Texas Dan McCarney and his 2 receivers from Carthage.

Isn't that the situation most the time, GMoney? Word I've heard is that we actually hire people to get the word out. GMG!

From a post a few days ago... I ran into a Green Brigade member and her father out here at the Hudson Oaks Walmart the other night. I had a Mean Green shirt on (she did to) and so I started talking to her and her father. Long story short....the Green Brigade member's father told me that he & wife had 6 others who would be at the Cotton Bowl with them and 5 of those 6 would be watching the Mean Green for the first time ever. Who knows....maybe we will have many of these kind of newbie Mean Green fans. (I didn't ask him but I'd bet they were all relatives,ie, grandparents, uncles, aunts, etc). GMG!

Absolutely! Especially when you consider some on this board have only seen a 1 season winning streak at North Texas.

Have never been a fan of all this early commitment craze. Its almost like someone telling you what you will be getting for Christmas in July. Didn't Mack Brown have much influence on all this early commit business years ago?

Most of you older alums will know this, but FSSW half time show recruiting guru is Randy Rodger, father of former Mean Green linebacker Jeff Rodgers. -
There were 10K several days ago...we haven't sold a ticket since? This: 92,000 seat stadium ='s no sense of urgency to buy tickets early. No Big 10 or P5 opponent per the HOD Bowls original contract or agreement means we need to sell even more tickets to make up for that fan shortage. (Pardon me while I say a few expletives). City of Dallas supposedly has already sold 5,000 tickets from another source. (Dallas area charity recipients of some of the gate receipts probably influenced those). Walk Up Ticket Sales will (still) be when many UNT students, alums and Mean Green fans buy their tickets. Can you really blame them? Many of us on GMG.com already have purchased ours but that is just the kind of thing we would do, now isn't it? Considering that North Texas is not getting the same P5 traveling fan's percs that the last 3 HOD Bowl host teams had...........we are still going to be just fine as many of you have said, but we will all have to wait till all ticket sales are in right before the kick-off to see what we have. GMG! PS: Ain't having a winning Mean Green football program so much better than what we've had? Good stuff just keeps on happening because of it, too.

Thanks Dr. Seuss....I'll alter the post. I was going on what another poster had posted couple weeks ago. Should have done my own research, eh? -

* The HOD Bowl will share an hour of national TV coverage with only 1 other school with our 11:00 AM kick-off on New Years Day. * That very exclusive & early TV bowl game will be a diamond in the rough for the UNT football program! * I think most of us know what Texas-based university bowl participant playing in a Texas-based bowl game that many of our Texas High School Friday Night Heroes may very well choose to watch. *With the Lone Star State approaching 30,000,000 citizens, we will have our share of HOD Bowl game TV viewers from Texans--what more could we ask for than that? . No matter how many fans we have inside the historic Cotton Bowl stadium there will be boo-koo's of television-viewing male types outside the Lone Star State who will become even more familiar with....... The University of North Texas Mean Green ! (The Only D-FW Area NCAA FBS Team To Play In A Bowl Game) PS: If you don't have plans to be at the historic Cotton Bowl 1/1/2014....then change your plans because all North Texas alums & Mean Green fans from every decade need to tow this rope. -

Day of game walk up sales will make us very happy or very sad. Been saying that from the git-go almost since the day we were invited. A 92,000 seat stadium takes away any sense of urgency for casuals and borderlines fans to buy last week, to buy now or even Christmas week..............IMO. GMG! -
Should we make some signs for the bowl?
PlummMeanGreen replied to KingDL1's topic in Mean Green Football
I've got a special hand sign I'll display to the one(s) who picked our opponent. Dandy Don Meredith saw such a hand sign at an MNF Houston Oilers game and then told Howard Cosell: "Howard that is that fans special way of saying they are #1." GMG! -
Totally enjoyable show... Even an ECU poster on the CUSA board was highly complimentary. He praised its high level of production quality. GMG!

Another poster who I believe would know says that City of Dallas/HOD people have already sold 5,000 tickets. This bowl game is also a charity event with some of its proceeds going to such, so some unaffiliated with UNT or UNLV might buy tickets just to help out whichever charities HOD officials have lined up to get some help. -

I guess UNLV is going to let North Texas tow the entire rope with the HOD Bowl game attendance thing, right? Someone in Dallas didn't think much of our school to give us a G5 opponent for a bowl game in a 92,000 seat stadium. We'd been better off playing the Middie's of Navy over at ACS in Fort Worth because we know from our Fouts Field game with them that they do bring a crowd---many in uniforms to boot. Heck, we'd even gotten a fly-over, too! We have to somehow take up the slack that UNLV is leaving us, folks. I've done my part and that is all I can do. If you are not planning to come to Dallas on New Years Day....change your plans to help us with this challenge. With our huge DFW constituency, it is not beyond the realm of being do-able. GMG!
