UNT Ticket office so busy RV answering phones!
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Perhaps he's also talking to P5 school AD's who want to bring their teams to Apogee and DFW for future OOC games, too? -
Yes, Coach and 103.3 show host (?) most of us on GMG.com will be at this game...we have no idea about those outside of GMG.com and will only have low to high estimates of which I've heard every guestimate of that number. Will the Cotton Bowl Stadium at 93,000 be the largest stadium any UNT football team has played? I know DKR Memorial at UT-Austin who we open our 2014 football season is up there but is it larger? If the City of Dallas comes thru with the locals with ticket sales and distribution as Fort Worth has done for their bowl game of late I think we will be fine at the turnstiles New Years Day. Any year the HOD local sales plus whoever the C-USA opponent would be need to combine for at least 15,000 fans for a bowl game in a venue this large. Not sure which CUSA school right now would ever bring as many fans as we will now (even with our 1 season win streak) or in the future for this bowl game with UNT's proximity and all. We all just hope we make a statement next Wednesday for all of DFW and the Lone Star State to see firsthand. Could this bowl game in the future ever be moved to Ford or Apogee? Just my .02.

Colorado State Coach Greg Lupfer suspended for Gay slur
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Anyone whose calls themselves a grown up is really going to care? Some of you need to learn that your not always going to win "Mr. Popularity" awards at some point in your life. Amazing--but true. In fact, the One whose birthday we celebrate today sure didn't going around asking...............please, please, please give me a greenie on what I've said because you might just hurt my feelings if you give me a red'ie." Moral of Post: Don't take yourselves too serious on this message board and what does it prove if you do? We all have our .02 worth on any subject from A to Z. Heck, our school once gave me a spirit award back when I was even more opinionated than I am now (if you can believe that). If the late Al Hurley were around he'd tell you that, too. Always remember that as long as the U.S. Constitution is alive and kickin'...we will all have opinions, be able to state them publicly but as we all know on GMG.com-------- those opinions will vary from time to time from poster to poster. Don't punish someone because theirs is different than yours, though. Just merely agree to disagree with the total southern charm all our mothers and dad's taught us long ago. GMG! -
Actually, I heard the entire interview, but I'm not basing most of what I said in my post on one interview on the mighty 1310....a station which by the way SMU bought out from right underneath us. All that happening after North Texas football and basketball radio coverage on 1310 helped that (then) AM station with what many have said was a very successfully launch its inaugural year of 1994. That action by SMU hardly made any of us who were around feel superior. Many of us did feel a bit less superior when that happened to our school in 1994--but infuriated might be the better word. I know others who were just as infuriated but its back to the old adage and to today's version of the Golden Rule: He who has the gold rules? SMU will rub it in on UNT when they can (even though some of you on this board give them a pass at every turn on that very idea). Seems there are numerous passes when it comes to other things concerning North Texas athletics thru the years and even past decades. Takes A Village To Raise One Who Would Learn To Post Less Than 2 Paragraphs To Make A Few Points: How about the last 40 years in this DFW sports market as my main barometer of what I posted in the last epistle? Of course, one would have to go beyond what I suppose is their personal pay scale of reading beyond 2 paragraphs to try to understand the full intent of an entire post consisting of more than 2 paragraphs. You can't judge a book by its cover or its first 2 paragraphs can you? If one is not going to read beyond 2 paragraphs of a post and then judge said entire post on 2 paragraphs....THEN WHY EVEN START READING A POST AT ALL--LEAST OF ALL RESPONDING TO 2 PARAGRAPHS? Reading the first 2 paragraphs of a book and that's it is like smoking a cigarette after fore-play. Not a very fulfilling smoke I'd say if you didn't even get to and finish the main event. (I know I'll go to hades for that one--please do forgive Saint Harry). AND...........If someone will show me in the Sports Message Board 10 Commandments that all you can write has to be said in 10 words and less or less than 2 paragraphs then I'll seriously think about changing my sinful message board ways but until then.........I'll keep on plugging alone. ____________________________________________________________________ Addendum: UNT90, we agree to disagree at times but many know you as a great (and caring) alum and Mean Green fan. We all want great things for our school is the common denominator. If 200,000 alums around DFW cared enough like you to voice a concerned opinion, we'd need a 200,000 seat Apogee Stadium! A Holiday Toast To A super North Texas alum/MG fan! PlummMeanGreen Jim Plummer NTSU Class of 1976 Weatherford, Texas

First of all, consider the cynics on KTCK 1310 The Ticket before we start really caring what they have to say about our school. 8'th grade locker room humor is their specialty and apparently it works with certain demographics with the ratings they get each quarter. North Texas will be the whipping post for Dallas and its front-running pro-oriented media until we prove to them that we are more than just a flash in the pan. That has been our history, folks, and who could deny it? We all believe now that we have the man who will turn the football part of all this around but nonetheless it must be turned around for us to convert the DFW sports media. They are as fickle and unimpressed as most of our 200,000 DFW area UNT alums. SMU and TCU would not have faired any better than UNT if they'd had the last 30 years we've had. Both of those schools (especially TCU) hired themselves out of having such a long, fruitless walk in the NCAA wilderness while North Texas tried to turn head football coaches from a couple of Texas high schools into the next Knute Rockne--both of those hires cost us dearly. When we weren't hiring Texas HS coaches we would then be on a non-stop journey of hiring college assistant coaches of which not one since 1981 left Denton anywhere close to .500 in personal career wins/losses. That is the 30 plus year history at UNT which has earned us mostly no respect from the local and regional sports media. We did all that on our own, fellow alums. This year could have been a dramatic turnaround wit h some of the other local media, though. Even some of the DFW newspaper media along with 1/2 of the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network all showing up at Apogee for their first offical visits to our football palace was quite special and then.............the very upbeat comments they made about UNT, Coach McCarney and this Fall's edition of our football team all on the Mean Green Radio Network I thought was quite eye-opening and maybe the start of something good with that sector of the media. Quite frankly, I think we'd all agree our attendance and alum support is nowhere close to where it can be, but some might consider it a small miracle that we've kept the fans we have. Coach DMac so admirably (and understandably for his team) wants attendance solved today. After all, he has in his past as a Big 12 HFC been used to sellouts in stadiums with 4 foot snow drifts piled high on a Big 12 school in Iowa's sideline. Most all of us feel many good things can happen in Denton if we take care of (O gosh, here we go) the 2 things that moves most NCAA FBS programs upward and forward and many times to better conference locales and those are: (1) a good season ticket sales base like ODU and UTSA have in so short a time and (2) large groups marketing designed to fill a 31K seat football stadium every Game Day. FWIW, most my life as a UNT alum we have pretty well ignored both (1) and (2) almost acting as there are no problems with either. C-USA membership I feel now is going to hold some feet to the fire to get started in solving both. If we don't solve both--we will stand still which in today's NCAA FBS level is the same thing as going backwards. GMG!

Merry Christmas To The Mean Green Nation & To All...
PlummMeanGreen replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Didn't want to post on this Christmas thread again but "Little Plummer Boy" made me do a Santa Clause'esque deep from the gut kind of laugh, Rick. Now what makes me get all teary eye is that "The Little Drummer Boy" was one of my late dad's favorite carols of the season and. with that subject I'll stop or my Irish tenor'ish emotions will get all out of kilter. You are truly one of our greatest alums and Mean Green fans, Rick. Merry Christmas! GMG -
I love ya' every one....even those I vehemently disagree from time to time which is hardly a game-changer for how I feel about my fellow alums and Mean Green fans. We in this all together, folks! * Peace On Earth Good Will Toward Men... GMG! PS: Celebrating Christmas from Weatherford, Texas....and what city will you be celebrating December 25'th?

I have a nephew who with his wife and 2 kids (a great nephew and a great niece--yes, I'm older than dirt) who all 4 love living in Keller. Keller ISD is a good one. My nephew (a UNT grad----hmmmm?) is a home-builder for the rich and famous of which his uncle is not one of those. His daughter, ie, my great-niece is already making plans to attend the U of North Texas....just like her dad and their uncle Jim.. We are a Mean Green clan ! GMG!

How weird! A fellow alum and I were talking about the old New Years Day/Cotton Bowl parade just yesterday. Used to watch it as a kid and then the Cotton Bowl game with the SWC champion as host team Not necessarily talking about the above, but too many other things have changed in the ever-changing NCAA landscape and a few I wish they'd just left alone.

UNT shines academically under McCarney
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Great news on the grades of many of our North Texas Mean Green football players. So few NCAA FBS school grads get drafted by an NFL team which means they will have to go out into the world and get a job. Even if they did get drafted the career span of an NFL football player is very short due to injuries or various things that shortens an NFL players career. With over 200,000 U of North Texas alums in the DFW Metroplex there are many from our group who are hiring authorities. Heck, I was one myself most my 25 years in tech school recruiting. Some of you on this forum I know have been as well. In the sector of education I worked I never once interviewed a North Texas grad who played for the Mean Green. I will say if I had he would have had an inside track for any job opportunity if he were qualified and if not qualified just be trainable and teachable. Sometimes its those kind inside tracks from a fellow UNT alum hiring authority that can change a young man's professional life forever. Moral of All This Is...............Go to class....get good grades and graduate because it will pay off in due time and it sounds like Coach McCarney has a very large group of his players doing just that. Owned a house way out on north Rufe Snow boulevard (76180) and with all that bottle-necked traffic on Loop 820 I couldn't wait to get away from all that plus........it seems to have gotten worse. UNLV fans discussing travel plans for HOD
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
My First Ragin' Rant of The Day....(I know, some of you who actually read this lagniape just thought you'd escaped me posting at least one)! Sounds like it will be such a hardship for UNLV to come to one of the Top 3 recruiting hot spots in the entire USA for a New Years Day bowl game. Do they know how many bowl games are played in states whose schools in those bowl hosting states have to go to other states to get a decent NCAA FBS level football player or 2? Anyone remember when the Colorado State HFC prior to the one they have now all but cried baby crocodile tears when the Lone Star States only MWC member, ie, TCU left that league since he recruited Texas quite heavily and also remember this small detail on all that > > > > CSU only had about 14 Texans on that Rams team? And once again.....................which clueless Einstein with an apparent un-Midas touch over in Big D pulled the trigger to have this school come to Texas in the first place? Did they do absolutely do their best to take much of the luster off this years game because it was North Texas? If you've been around the DFW area for about half a century like many of us you'd never really want to take that possibility off the table. It's so gol' darrned obvious that UNLV would have felt more comfortable playing in one of their precious little MWC bowl games. Shame it wasn't Boise's Mr. Potato Head Bowl game before about 2,000 B.I.S. was it now? Like all of you, I'm going to the HOD Bowl to support no other team but the one wearing green, but someone over in Big D could have been a bit more scheduling savvy and entrepenurial-like as to have set up a better opponent than the one we got. Is this about SMU and TCU not going bowling at all so for damn sure make certain North Texas doesn't get a marquee name but rather what is mostly a basketball school instead? Remember last time we got a basketball school for a bowl opponent whose mascots were the Bearcats and how so few they brought to a true destination city down in Louisiana? Were not the Cincy' fans saying..."We had a big home basketball game on campus same night as the NO's Bowl so that why we have so few? B.S. (And Cincy' is now up for ACC membership to boot now)? If so, they didn't earn points toward possible admittance for such a conference affiliation the night the North Texas Mean Green kicked their Bearcat butt way down yonder in New Orleans. GMG! -

Had we sold the same number of football season tickets Old Dominion & UTSA sold this Fall we would have begun HOD Bowl ticket sales with a head start, ie, a pretty large base of fans along with their season tickets buyer' options for tickets to the historic Cotton Bowl stadium. There are really many reasons a school at the NCAA FBS level needs to have a large base of such sales with that campaign which should really begin every Spring and into the Summer. UTSA is already selling their 2014 season tickets now with a nice website promo poster. If we by gosh need that school in the Alamo City to shame us into doing what we should have been doing the last 10 to 15 years then so be it. We talking 3 years of football history versus 100, folks. What is wrong with that Y^%%^*POW!^$R@#^$.............picture? Congrats To Coach DMac & the Mean Green! Yall have done your part! GMG!

For The Love of The Mean Green
PlummMeanGreen replied to Chief Rising Eagle's topic in Mean Green Football
Great article on a great North Texas alum and Mean Green fan. Way to go, Scott Campbell & Family! I remember when Scott Campbell was a UNT student with one of the most distinguishable and loud, piercing yells at old Fouts Field. Many of the things he would yell out were things of that would make great Game Day comedy, too. Reading that Scottie Campbell has a son who is a senior in HS makes me feel even older than I am). (Of course, that still beats the alternative). The Campbells Are A'Comin To The Cotton Bowl Stadium On New Years Day! Let's Join Them & Give Them A Significant Number of Company! GMG! -
And amazingly, we have not purchased (or will purchase the next few days) a pretty impressive number of tickets to watch a non-Big 10 school (as the last 3 CUSA host teams did per the HOD agreement) or any Power 5 school to take the place of a Big 10 school because)............."WE" are buying tickets... ...to watch this Mean Green football team "who turned this whole darn thing around" because most all of us who are not permanent residence of the Land of Ned have bought into what Dan McCarney has given us even during this..........the Giving Season. GMG!

And runner is going to be the "001" that takes us over the top! At my age you tend to repeat, I say repeat, I do say repeat yourself (insert pic of Yosemite Sam)...... ......but if Big D would have only copied Fort Worth for what they do with their bowl game annually as a city wide civic project we would be more than happy with the turnstile count on New Years Day; who knows, we still may be. Rice played at Fort Worth last year. Anyone really think the Owls had that many traveling fans to hit over 40K? Advantage > > > >Fort Worth & TCU who made that happen weeks before that game took place. 40,000 bowl fans at Amon Carter Stadium is pert near a sellout in that football venue.

Worst basketball team i've seen in 35 years
PlummMeanGreen replied to untbigdaddy's topic in Mean Green Basketball
North Texas had "THE" premier on campus basketball venue in the Southwest in the Super Pit's first 10 years of operation that once even hosted 3 NCAA regional tournaments. Hosting those was a pretty big deal back in that era. During those 3 regionals, the teams (and coaches) who came to Denton was a who's who of NCAA basketball back in that day. Have said it before to those who want to keep celebrating our (now) 3 year old "new" football stadium, but we don't need history to repeat itself with Apogee as we've done with the Super Pit with so few quality teams (and with DMac I really don't think it will). Bottom line is....................you have to put good varsity teams inside all these venues in the Mean Green Village and the Super Pit (an amazing, totally ageless facility) because without quality coaching, recruiting and good basketball teams you can build all the venues you want but the job will still only be half done.
