Hey guys, recruiting at the NCAA FBS level has its ups and downs (as most of you already know)....as in many moments of unbridled enthusiasm with some signings and then those moments you lost one you would have bet an entire years salary we would never lose generating a feeling as if you just backed over your favorite hunting dog in your pickup truck. Nevertheless, it's still quite habit forming to follow all this, now isn't it? GMG! PS: Best rule of thumb is to just try to put yourselves in the shoes of some of these 17 and 18 year olds.

97and03, Darrell Dickey in one of his first recruiting hauls had 8 or 9 Texas state top 100 recruits. Corky Nelson recruited pretty decent, too, as this link on the next line would indicate just looking at some of his team's 1988 season results. http://www.fanbase.com/North-Texas-Mean-Green-Football-1988 I have no idea, though, and hence the request for a few of our GMG.com recruiting gurus who can find this kind of stuff out pretty fast. I think you're right, though, that we (like so many other FBS schools) have had our share of 2 star recruits some of whom matured in college quite impressively. GMG!

You know the weird story concerning Texas Tech is that at my ripe age of 63 I can only remember the Red Raiders ever winning (or was it even tying?) for 1 conference championship in my entire lifetime. I don't know how they get around that "one small detail" when recruiting, either. I also don't think TCU is hardly going to be piling on conference championships in the Big 12, either, much like they did "not" pile them on their last quarter century in the now defunct Southwest Conference. TCU Coach Patterson 2 years ago really got drunk on the purple kool-ade when he announced that he wanted TCU to be "the Metroplex's college football team." Wonder if Coach 'Pat was able to view the HOD Bowl game televised from the historic Cotton Bowl as he would have seen 35,000 Mean Green fans (along with a MG win) and that happening after just "1" winning season in MG Country out of the last decade? * Sounds to me like a "regional" university with one helluva bunch of upside to me. Moral of Post and Message For the TCU Coach: Coach Pat', you should probably just stick with your private school Froggies being "your home team" in Cowtown. Also, as many across the USA have seen pics online of that very small crowd of yalls Big 12 home game against the Kansas Jayhawks........well.................I'll stop with that. GMG!

DL Xavier Washington 6-1, 238 4.85 Cedar Hill (offer)
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Addendum: Former NFL great, Pro Bowler and North Texas Athletic Hall of Famer, ie, Cedrick Hardman was 5'10" when he was a freshmen at North Texas........when drafted #1 by the San Francisco 49'ers he had grown to 6'4". I can't quite remember ever hearing of such a growth spurt as that. . Would love to have Xavier in a Mean Green uniform come August 30'th when we open our season against the Longhorns of the U of Texas and then our home season opener at fabulous Apogee Stadium the next week against.....SMU. Regarding Our Bowl Opponent . . .
PlummMeanGreen replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
And I had started 2014 without any mistakes, fumbles or muffs, too. Now I can proceed with all my usual imperfections without near the pressure. GMG! -
And being sure-handed would be a plus, too. I can't remember Breland Chancellor ever muffing a punt or kick-off return.....period. GMG!

REPORT: Tjeerdsma to Sam Houston State
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't think Coach Chico's heart was really into getting this job anyhow. Another "W" season or 2 or 3 or 4 in a row at North Texas and I believe he'd have a chance for a HFC'ing gig at the FBS level. CaliMeanGreen has been right all along (which my gut feeling said he was). GMG!- 7 replies

NM Green, I'd almost bet our fabulous marching ambassadors, ie, the Green Brigade would be a part of such a welcoming ceremony for Dr. Smatresk, but the main question is: How would they enter the main ballroom where the "meet the president" festivities will take place? GMG! PS: I know U of North Texas has many facilities to choose from to have such a welcoming gathering, but wouldn't it have been nice to have had the new hotel and convention center facilities in operations for this fun event? All of that happening in the shadows of Apogee Stadium and inside the Mean Green Village in other words?

Many of us on this forum can tell UNT walk-ons how some of the best players we've had in our history were walk-ons. In 40 years of following Mean Green football, I cannot think of a better school for a walk-on to get their 2'nd chance than the University of North Texas; especially now under Coach Dan McCarney and his super coaching staff. GMG! Unrelated, but we once had a UNT Track & Field walk-on who (long story short) won a bronze medal at the '72 Olympics at Munich. His name was Bill Schmidt and he threw the javelin. (BTW, he did prove himself as a walk-on and received his scholarship at UNT).

Regarding Our Bowl Opponent . . .
PlummMeanGreen replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
I just couldn't understand (yet I still sorta' could knowing our culture the last 25 years) why a win over the Wolverines was just not put in as an option period--that's all. You're right, maybe I just don't get it. I know my era as a North Texas student many times creates differences of opinion compared to the various eras of other UNT alums. Doesn't make me appreciate them any less, though. I thought the HOD Bowl game sorta' tied many of our UNT eras together and I still can't get over as to what I witnessed firsthand on New Years Day. Neither can many I've spoken to who did not attend our school. Mean Green 93-98, I know for a fact from reading your posts on this forum and others who know you that............you are one helluva' great North Texas alum and Mean Green fan. -

A poll should include all possibilities for it to be a fair poll. Not just what one thinks makes up a good poll. -
Regarding Our Bowl Opponent . . .
PlummMeanGreen replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
I didn't vote because it did not include a win over Michigan at all with any kind of scenario for that to happen. (Didn't App. State beat them a few years ago and in Ann Arbor, of course)? Still, in a perfect world a win over a Big 10 school who would have traveled 15,000 fans adding to our 35,000 would have given the HOD Bowl a better stadium crowd along with good Nielsen TV ratings and probably because with such a matchup I assume ESPN officials would have found one of their prime ESPN stations to broadcast such a game (instead of ESPNU). I no longer have ESPNU on my new "The Dish" package and I understand many others do not have it and never have, either. Hard to watch a game if its not on your cable package thus a kick in the butt for national TV ratings. North Texas/UNVL still won its time slot over the Georgia/Nebraska bowl game in this part of Texas, though. GMG! -
...you have the time. Some of you are great at doing this kind of thing, SO..........THIS >>>>>>>>Research how many recruiting services star ratings our last 20 or so Mean Green All Conference players (1'st & 2'nd team) had coming out of their high schools. PLUS....how many from that group of Mean Green All Conference players were walk-ons? ____________________________________________ Give Coach Dan McCarney & his staff these 3 things: (1) a recruit with good to excellent NCAA FBS level speed (you cannot coach speed as they say) (2) a recruit with size, quick feet, "heart" and a willingness to physically mature in the weight room and then finally a committed recruit with a... (3) ...sincere, heart-felt desire to be part of a special football family who have an All For One--One For All mind-set and who also want to help his new football family to continue what our 22 graduating Mean Green seniors began this last Fall and that which was celebrated by 35,000 of their greatest fans on New Years Day at the historic Cotton Bowl Stadium! _____________________________________________ Yes, it would be nice to have a handful of 4 or 5 star recruits in Mean Green Country for 2-a-days come August, but moreso, committed recruits who will mature a star or 2 or 3 from their high school development who will be tutored by Coach Dan McCarney and his superb staff with some of the best facilities in the entire NCAA located inside the Mean Green Village. __________________________________________________________________________ Let's do this all over again come this New Years Day, 2015, as seen in the YouTube video but with 45,000 traveling Mean Green fans this time around! .

New Names on Offseason Workout Logs
PlummMeanGreen replied to Censored by Laurie's topic in Mean Green Football
Many of us share your frustration and concerns, Cooley. Seems most G5 football programs rarely get 3 stars and up DL's. Think I read somewhere that most of that group seem to always want Big Time U. Most G5's have to recruit them as projects, grow em' up in the weight room and then depend on their development aided by a good coaching staff like we have at North Texas. Perhaps, Richard Abbe being one of those kind of players and he is now even being talked up as a possible NFL draft choice. -
We need DL's............pleeeezzzzzzz...................to start on our 2014 Mean Green "D" and is why we all so want Xavier Washington as a resident over at Victory Hall inside the Mean Green Village and then his being in 2-a-days at amazing Apogee Stadium this August. Would also love to see 40,000 Mean Green fans at the next Heart of Dallas Bowl game versus a Big 10 opponent (as was supposed to have been the case the first day of this month). Granted, 2 Big 10 schools being in BCS bowls created the scenario as to where there were no Big 10 schools bowl eligible but doesn't the HOD Bowl also have a Big 12 option for the HOD just in case? Canales finalist for Sam Houston HC Job?
PlummMeanGreen replied to kakat10's topic in Mean Green Football
Still....isn't listing all your "finalist" candidates in a newspaper kinda' bush league? Usually it's more: Chico Canales has expressed some interest in the SHSU HFC's job and that be it? Rather than......Chico Canales is the finalist among 5 others who SHSU athletic officials were said to want all 5 to meet at the local pub and have a drunk-fest with the last one left standing who will get the job? (I jest) Maybe I've missed it, but I just don't recall a "public" finalist list for a college head football coaching gig. As always, I stand to be corrected. GMG! -
But Mean Green Matt, it was one helluva' start for what we all want to happen for our school's support. It was the largest contingency of North Texas alums and Mean Green fans gathered in one place that most of us from any era ever witnessed. I just hope the UNT Athletic Department added a whole bunch of new names and addresses to their mailing list and will go after that new group marketing-wise like a school of pirrahanas.

I've been looking everywhere but where are the summaries of their NCAA meetings from last week? I had hoped C-USA Commissioner Brit Banowsky would have had a full report on those meetings. GMG!
