Xavier, we hardly got to know ya' ! Good luck at NW, big guy! GMG!

Wonder if Bo Pullen knows we have former preferred walk-on's in the North Texas Athletic Hall of Fame? Should we tell him?
-
Wonder how close in talent the Texas Top 100 is to the National Top 100?

Who's the one arguing here? I made my point and your trying to start a pissing contest over something that you've posted that is no revelation to anyone else except (seemedly) yourself. SMU outrecruits UNT most years is like saying the sun comes up most mornings. Duh? Change the subject because your SMU recruiting theme is going nowhere. All I said is that since 1990 all those blue chip SMU recruiting classes gave them a 2 game split with North Texas over a total of 4 games and that seems to have made your pants go crazy. Harry, this still an opinion board? .

2014 North Texas Football Schedule
PlummMeanGreen replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
Gary Patterson's first year as TCU's HFC they played NCAA 1-AA (now FCS) Northwestern State from Nachitoches, Louisiana, and got beat. You gotta' watch out for some of these teams at the lower level. -
Good grief, man, is SMU's recruiting successes over North Texas a new revelation to you? It's called pecking order for those of us who've seen a few of these college football recruiting rodeos for a few decades now BUT.............every damn time SMU has all but said: Here you go North Texas, we've screwed the pooch with our athletics program (again) as we now have to take a couple years off from football due to our constant cheating but what did our school do during what should have been a huge window of opportunity to move forward past SMU? You tell me since I can't use cuss words on this forum to tell you what we did or mostly didn't do with some very, very poor leadership in Denton. Same thing now in basketball. You want a great basketball program? Then go out and buy you one........SMU has with Larry Brown and some deep pockets to coax him out of the rest home to come back and coach basketball again. SMU will be an NCAA Big Dance contestant this winter AND.............will most likely go past the NCAA's first round (which is a feat we've never accomplished). Meanwhile we at North Texas continue with the best damn on-campus basketball facility in the Metroplex which has mostly been one helluva' wind break for the intramural tennis courts most my 4.5 decades as a student/alum. But what I was very gently trying to point out with the above UNT/SMU all time series W/L records (for those of us who still go by wins over recruiting gold medals) was that sometimes all those blue chip recruiting classes at SMU did not always translate to wins. Since 1990 as the record shows, we've played 4 times and have split the series with 2 wins each. For a school who constantly beats us in recruiting, one might have thought they would have beaten us 4 times rather than a split.
-
Yes, SMU has owned the series beginning about 6 of our school's name changes ago. And no, we weren't competitive with SMU when they were a paid semi-pro football team back in the 80's either, but since 1990 (post Death Penalty) this is our football series record with SMU: ________________________________________________________ 2007/09/08 North Texas 31 - SMU 45 L 2006/09/09 North Texas 24 - SMU 6 W 1992/09/12 North Texas 14 - SMU 28 L 1990/10/06 North Texas 14 - SMU 7 W _________________________________________________________ The North Texas/SMU game at Apogee this Fall I wish could have been played this last Fall but........it is what it is. The game should make for a fun, intercollegiate Game Day this September 6'th at our pretty little lady of a football stadium. GMG!
-
So we go back to being the North Texas of old and crawl back in our hole? Well..............I don't think so as long as Coach McCarney is around in Mean Green Country and we keep hiring future head football coaches that have very similar bios as he had before he arrived in Denton. It has made a difference and I just don't know what took us so long to get back to that kind of hiring modus operendi once again. GMG!

2014 North Texas Football Schedule
PlummMeanGreen replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
Preach on, Reverend Miers! -
Like I've heard from a few already, it is within reason that our school's football team takes a short detour this next Fall, but maybe not so much that we don't get a bowl game. With all the stars aligning again, who knows what the 2014 edition of the Mean Green can do. Can our home game attendance (with potentially record-setting crowds because of newbie fans we retain from the HOD Bowl) be the much needed 12'th man this Fall; that is, for what will largely be a young, inexperienced football team? No doubt our offensive line will be the strongest part of this next Fall's team with a couple of Mean Green RB's just as experienced with some past bright moments of their own. Need our early schedule once again to develop those who will be important to this team for our conference schedule. Would have preferred to have played SMU with our bowl winning team, but I have no idea what SMU has lost from their non-bowl team of this last Fall. I think the score of the North Texas/SMU game at Apogee Stadium will be close. Spring football and further player development will be important again (as it always is). Also wonder to what degree the extra month of HOD Bowl practices helped? 2014......?

Xavier Washington gets full offer from Northwestern
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
If so..............good luck, Xavier! We then all move on to our future with this class which we knew would have been better with him, but if not, this group is still an exceptional class even without his committing to us. BillySee58's research seems to indicate that between 4 recruiting services we are approaching 10 "3" star recruits? Been awhile for that, folks. And he also reported just how close some of our 2 stars are to being Rivals 3 stars. We have a walk-on program with Coach McCarney that (among other players) produced the best sure-tackling DB I've seen at North Texas as in #31. "It's All Good & It's All Green!" GMG! -
Xavier Washington gets full offer from Northwestern
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
So true, but with one Big 10 championship in the last umpteen years for the Wildcats it seems Northwestern U loses a bunch of recruits to Michigan, Iowa, Notre Dame and many others, too. Seems to be the way of the NCAA. Maybe Coach McCarney has started changing the culture of recruiting at North Texas as to create a future much like former conference mate Boise State has had the last 15 years; you know, like when they've been Top 25 during most all of that time as well? TCU was an SWC doormat for the last quarter century in the SWC and North Texas even beat them as a 1-AA football program so maybe we should all learn these 3 words...........Never Say Never? GMG! -
If you owned the Mean Green spirit store
PlummMeanGreen replied to 3XL's topic in Mean Green Football
As far as the Academy, Finish Line, Lids and the Sports Authority are concerned (and talking about those outside Denton County).......anyway......we are at the mercy of the buyers who seem to be the ones with the main influence as to what stores get what school's sports gear. It would be easy to wager that those buyers have no idea that we have more than twice the student enrollment of SMU and TCU, combined. I'd also bet 9 out of 10 of those buyers have no idea that North Texas has 225,000 DFW area alums and an enrollment approaching 40,000. Any takers on that bet? GMG! -
2014 Season Tickets go on Sale 2/3
PlummMeanGreen replied to Eddie Delgado's topic in Mean Green Football
I'll be re-newing my MGC membership and maybe go up a level along with the purchase of 2 season tickets for the 2014 football campaign but probably won't be doing that.today but hopefully before the Spring game. We have to set a record in season tickets sales this Fall, folks. We just have to do it and from what we all witnessed on New Years Day at the historic Cotton Bowl stadium...............why not? And like THOR I also ask: When will we know the teams and dates of our home schedule? GMG! -
Xavier Washington gets full offer from Northwestern
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Well, like John Wayne used to say: "A man's gotta' do what a man's gotta do" and Xavier will be doing just that with his decision. Not sure we should be predicting "what happens if" but I know that is being done out of passion for our school and how we feel Xavier would fit into the picture here but......it still takes 2 to tango so X would obviously have to feel the same way about all this as we do. Happy Birthday to Mr. Apogee, UNTflyer
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
A belated Happy Birthday...thanks to you, your leadership in the SGA and the UNT student body of that day for being for a new football stadium. I think those who wanted to fill Fouts Field first might have figured out by now that that would have been an ender for this college football program at the level we all for the most part wanted. Visionaries like you, UNTFlyer have been few because few could handle the personal criticism to not go along with the usual company line which probably cost us about 20 or so years in getting this stadium built. Thanks again for daring to be different because we are all the beneficiaries of that. GMG! -
Xavier Washington gets full offer from Northwestern
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
For newer GMG.com members since veteran GMG.com posters may have read this already but: For about 30 or so years most of the Southwest Conference did not want to play North Texas because (1) we had integrated with Abner Haynes and Leon King in the 50's so all of that SWC group drop kicked us off their future schedules because of our school doing the right thing; then (2) the Mean Joe Greene Era of the 60's gave them further reason not to schedule North Texas and then; (3) the Hayden Fry era of the 70's completed that 30 or so years period of time we were not on SWC school's schedule (except for SMU a few times & UT twice). NOTE: TCU (for the most part) only scheduled North Texas when they were in a win cycle and we were not---go figure. I can only imagine how UNT could have padded our "W's" numbers in our all time series with some of those Southwest Conference schools during that 30 plus years period of time. Shame on those who dropped us off their schedules, though, because we had integrated in the 1950's. Shame, shame, shame... -
Xavier Washington gets full offer from Northwestern
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Never...but what might be the chance we play some of those teams in an HOD Bowl game since that bowl has contracted with the Big 10 and Big 12 for future CUSA opponents? X is a cut above and will make the right decision for himself, but for the rest of us will probably keep on speculating about him and a cast of 100's of other potential recruits for North Texas since that is what we do on this forum. -
Xavier Washington gets full offer from Northwestern
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
And before 1995? I know Texas Tech only tied for a SWC championship and that was it the whole time they were in the SWC. I don't think TCU won a SWC championship since before Ike was U.S. president, but I stand to be corrected. Yes, we can still hope we're in this race for Xavier, but bottom line is that he gets what he really wants and feels the most comfortable with. He may also need to look beyond the day he makes his decision and hope there will be no buyer's remorse with that choice once all the TV lights and cameras are no longer around but.......... I'd bet his mamma has already told him all that as most mamma's would with their sons (or daughters for that matter) in some of life's big decisions made as a young adult.. GMG! -
Xavier Washington gets full offer from Northwestern
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Oh to be 17 or 18 years old again and a world out there to conquer! Just curious and this has nothing to do with X's decison whatsover, but when is the last time Northwestern won a Big 10 championship? Or TCU won a SWC or Big 12 championship? Or Texas Tech a SWC or Big 12 championship? This list could go on with schools who really never win their league's football championships. ? And don't those aforementioned schools for the most part get the kind of bowl games UNT will get as a CUSA member beginning with the HOD Bowl who will have a Big 10 or Big 12 schools as the CUSA opponent the next 10 or so years?
