So sad. I'd watched an Oklahoma-media produced YouTube video about Mason & Jason's high school teammate they lost to a tragedy, too.

IF YOU CAN'T SELL THIS WORLD CLASS FOOTBALL VENUE , THE ADJCENT SPRAWLING CAMPUS NEXT TO THIS FOOTBALL PALACE & OUR NORTHERN TEXAS LOCATION THEN YOU NEED TO GET OUT OF THE COACHING BUSINESS! MY MONEY SAYS COACH SETH LITTRELL & COMPANY WILL SELL THE HELL OUT OF ALL THIS ONCE THEY GET THEIR SUITCASES UNPACKED. THEY HAVE THEIR PERSONAL PRIDE & NCAA COLLEGE FOOTBALL FUTURES AS THEIR CHIEF MOTIVATORS & WE THE FANS ARE JUST READY TO RETIRE THE WORD..........P-O-T-E-N-T-I-A-L......... FROM OUR MEAN GREEN DICTIONARY. GMG!

When was the last time we had a decisive Win
PlummMeanGreen replied to KingDL1's topic in Mean Green Football
The HOD Bowl win in the Cotton Bowl stadium over Mountain West Conference UNLV with 36,000 Mean Green fans was superb! (Can we only imagine had we had a Big 10 school eligible to come down to Dallas how much larger that crowd could have been)? New Orleans Bowl win over the Bearcats of Cincinnati. I loved being at "The Stand" game versus Rice U at Apogee and on ESPN national television that Halloween Night. Our New Mexico State bowl clinching win at Fouts when the goal post was torn down was a memorable game, too. (See pic below) And I could mention the '75 Tennessee win but I won't. GMG! -
If this team develops as I think they will both Rice & Army look beatable, but we are biased, too. If we'd only played B.C before SMU then (IMHO) you'd had a 4'th quarter nail-biter of a game and (who knows) maybe even a win. GMG! PS: First college football game I saw was at Rice Stadium with the Owls hosting Baylor in the early 60's. Baylor QB Don Trull was flinging passes to receiver Lawrence "Don't Call Me Larrry" Elkins.

Uplifting Thoughts For September 17
PlummMeanGreen replied to EagleMBA's topic in Mean Green Football
Good one, EagleMBA! Great to have visited with you & many others on our (winning) Game Day! GMG! -
Just Scatter'shootin' From the Hip (A few thoughts post BC win). But first this quote: "Catch yourself on fire & people will come from miles around to watch you burn." (Kirk Cousins, Washington Redskins QB) I know I'm gushing all over the place with Mason Fine in this my 4'th decade of following Mean Green football, but for heaven's sakes, we've had 1 winning season the last 12 years so we have to hang our hat on something that will get us excited about this program & its easy to do that with QB Fine. His size? Can you say, uh, Drew Brees? (He's just 1 inch taller than Mason Fine). Yada! Yada! Yada! Still, it appears to those who'd know that maybe we have all those new faces in the right places, but we know our prior regime did not leave us many scholarship players. Upon debuting our football palace Apogee Stadium we did not recruit to that enormous selling point as we should have. Why? Who knows? Some do know, though. > > >One great UNT alum extremely close to what's going on up there I ran into at half time last night & he told me: "We played before 36,000 North Texas fans and alums in the Heart of Dallas bowl game then the very next year our HFC has a losing season and says: "I CANNOT WIN AT THIS SCHOOL." (You can if you & your entire coaching staff recruits, Coach).:( HERE WE GO AGAIN (Sing it, Dolly)! My Junior year at North Texas made me think of all those teenage HS years I was a Houston Cougar fan growing up in the vGreater Houston area. Back then Coog' fans wanted SWC membership which would come but the journey to get there was quite exciting, too; especially one game in particular and that a 20 to 20 tie game at DKR featuring the new UT Wishbone versus the Houston Veer. Our Danbury HS football team was on the road to play a Saturday game at Schulenberg's Sacred Heart HS, and our HFC Harold Humber (surprisingly) allowed our team to listen to UH play Duffy Daugherty's Top ranked Michigan State Spartans en route. We could not believe what we were hearing from UH play by play guy Gene Elston. It was a program changer for UH as the Spartans never did figure out how to contain the Houston Veer offense that day and the Coog's massacred Michigan State that afternoon & shocked the entire college football world. FAST FORWARD.......After North Texas beat Houston 28 to 0 in Texas Stadium and then the SEC's 6 & 5 Tennessee Volunteers in 1975, I thought to myself "well, hot damn, our school is following the very model of the UH football program & by golly we are going places with this athletic program." So 1975 became the bell weather for many of us who called ourselves Mean Green fans. Matter a fact, it still is with those of us who are still kickin'. So Why Not North Texas? Why should we look down at our shoe strings & say we are not worthy? We are as worthy as the next darn school among those who we were once on a par and in the same conference with like Houston, Louisville, Memphis, Tulsa and Cincinnati. Again: Why not North Texas? I know there are a million "but's" and "if's"& "we can't ever do this here" but at some point we will have new blood and new faces who will re-catch our lightning in a bottle to show us all other-wise. God, please just let it be this group. This is our time.

Trying not to drown in all the green kool-ade, , but might the SMU game have been more of an end of 4'th quarter nail-biter with the pro-active leadership of true freshman Mason Fine (adrenalin over-throws & all)? If, if if, but gosh if we could have opened with BC instead of SMU. WHO DID DAT' SCHEDULE?!?!??
-
Mason Fine did great this evening. Can't remember a true freshmen outside of Giovanni Vizza who'd done better since my first season as a Mean Green fan, circa 1973. Anyone heard about Mason's injury in the post-game coach's show? Enjoy Mason Fine because he is something special. We just need to start recruiting D1 classes again which has not been done in awhile. Gray Eagle was quite right beginning in Apogee's debut year 2011 (& thereafter) when he said our recruiting classes were not commiserate with all the numerous selling or positive benefits we have at North Texas--beginning with our football palace--namely Apogee Stadium.

South Dakota St. walked into TCU's Amon Carter Stadium last weekend & almost walked out with a win against the Horned Frogs. Few of us are taking any pre-game victory laps with our team presently in another rebuilding mode. D1 FBS transfers becoming immediately eligibile at FCS schools is a very nice early Christmas gift for many such schools, though. UNT 28....BC 21

Mason Fine has the "IT" factor. We've had other pretenders, but #6 has the skins on the wall that suggests that he has "it." He needs a supporting cast full of "they've got it" talent just as well. Obvious to see he has good parenting, good character and humility. You can't get all that in college. I watched an Oklahoma produced documentary on Mason & his HS team that gave good insight on his content of character. Look forward to watching him play tomorrow evening.

In 15 years off & on GMG.com one of the best & most sensible posts I've read. Death, taxes & NCAA conference re-alignment will all 3 happen. Best be ready for all 3. GMG!

Then I'll be bringing my special recipe of Parker County peach preserves along or is it "Jelly" only? Jelly Night Is Alright On Saturday Night. (Boyhowdy, we need a win in the worst way). :) -

22,000 I will be one of that number. Are there any special promotions? Parents Weekend, Scouts Night, etc ? -
All the speculation on every subject imaginable (and from all eras of North Texas Exes) sho' do make me glad they still have to play the game. Mason Fine looks like the real deal to me, but I'm just a Monday Morning QB novice. See some of yall this Saturday at amazing Apogee Stadium !

Remember Riley Dodge? I have no problem with a 2 QB system until that time in the future that it's needs to be a 1 QB system.

Some schools seem to receive invites based on what they did 50 plus years ago. Tulane & SMU easily fit with that group. If UNT had that same trait who thinks we wouldn't use it, either? Heck, Tulane was once in the SEC and for whatever reason dropped out of that league but still....they are a former SEC school who played in 80,000 seat Tulane Stadium (which doubled as the Sugar Bowl every 1'st of January back in the day) yet they received the AAC invite on (seems to me) what they hadn't done in a long time. Its a mystery to me why North Texas has gone thru an army of coaches of which none finished above .500. Jerry Moore was right at .500 & I won't even mention his predecessor who did finish above .500 since that is now ancient history. Who knows where all this conference re-alignment goes, but the only thing we have right now is the "P" word and one helluva' TV market of which UNT has the largest constituency from which to draw good Nielsen ratings as in....... enrollment, huge DFW area alumnus numbers and our school's home county population which will soon enough be at 1 million. Truth be told, UNT President Neal Smatresk is probably our only chance to plead our case with MWC powers that be if our school decides it wants to leave Sun Belt 2.0. Again, only thing that makes this work is if 4 Texas schools circle the wagons and go westward ho straight to the MWC. Most on GMG.com seem to see the MWC as a move up.

After what South Dakota State almost did to TCU why would anyone take any game against a D1 FCS school for granted?
-
I went to 3 games at OU. I looked around & saw many whose ancestors tried to do my clan in at Fort Parker, circa May 19, 1836. My scalp was crawling & had an unusual itch at all 3 games. :) Of course, I wholeheartedly admire Native Americans & especially the one wearing #5 for the Mean Green. I hope he will lead us out of the wilderness. GMG!

Agree with some of it, Ward White. Time zone related kick-off times for a MWC division of mostly Texas schools I believe would get special consideration . (Of course, all this merely projecting) Projecting (or maybe just dreaming which we all cannot afford to ever stop doing) but if we play MWC schools who are ranked and actually beat some of them, then North Texas gets Top 25 rankings; so then a ranked North Texas football program becomes a school that regional schools who could bring fans would want on their schedule. Big 12 schools give small allotments for visiting fans because that's all they've got left after season ticket sales and projected "walk up" sales. Be nice when North Texas will be able to do the same. We're not close to that now, but our school, alumnus base and Denton County just keeps growing & we will one day fill that fabulous Apogee up by default at some point. Ranked MWC teams? Remember when the Mean Green beat a (tied for) 19'th ranked San Diego State Aztecs football team and in Denton? Me'thinks that was the last ranked team we beat & its been awhile but nevertheless......WE BEAT THEM! Addendum: Been busy building a business the last few years (to add to my 401-K) & have this Saturday off so I'm getting pumped to see our school's football team & the many I know who'll put up with my opinionated B.S but the one thing I (and others) have never been able to bring ourselves to think is: "Is this all there will ever be at my alma mater so I should just simmer down & accept what I'm being told to, uh, accept & is impossible to achieve?" GMG!

Old familiar story to the older geezers but UNT Athletic Hall of Famer and teammate to Mean Joe Greene, ie, defensive end Cedrick Hardman was 5'10" his freshman year at UNT. By his senior year at UNT he grew to 6'5" & 240 lbs, was drafted #1 by the SF 49'ers and had a great All Pro career. If Mason Fine grew to 6'5" would that make all happy or might he be too tall to suit those who are nit'pickin' this subject to a slow death. Some things never change on GMG.com, but I still find it entertaining as all get-out! What I have seen of Mason Fine thus far has this older geezer excited about our alma mater's next 4 years. GMG! No more 5 year plans, please, because some of us are running out of time for too many more 5 year plans!

It's also like RBT79 posted: "Look at Tulane...how did they get into the AAC?" UNT President Neal Smattesk who left UNLV for UNT I'd wager would be our ticket into the MWC if we were invited & if we were even interested. ______________________________ POWDER BC & COME BACK STRONG, MEAN GREEN!

Click heels 3 times, Phil, & say 'purdy please.?

?? Again, with a "winning" Mean Green football program who would you prefer to see at Apogee Stadium? North Texas vs: former SBC schools now in CUSA + Old Dominion & Charleston or... North Texas vs: Air Force, San Diego St., Boise St., Colorado St., Fresno St. & others? Only thing that makes this make any sense, though, is if the 3 other Texas schools in CUSA become part of the same MWC division with time zone kick-off considerations for that new division. Regional OOC scheduling at Apogee (like SMU) gives us traveling fans to our home stadium, but If SMU opts out of our contract we'd still have some impressive (sometimes ranked) MWC teams as a welcome conselation for games at Apogee. What could be the ace in the hole is our current president came from a MWC school. ➡️ Probably not going to happen soon but we have to keep some options on the table & not act surprised or un-prepared when the next NCAA conference shake-up occurs.
