Fine will fine this season and then for the next 3 years. Hey folks, he's only played most of 4 games at the NCAA D1 level & I haven't seen anything that makes me think he will go backwards with his progress. He's a gamer & one that has played a part in re-sparking the interest in a football season that some on this board thought would be a win'less football season. He stuck with his commitment to North Texas when he could have bailed with a preferred W.O. situation at OU & OSU who reportedly made last minute efforts to change his mind. Those 2 schools were given a nice tip from someone who said they should get him on both their respective campuses. How many kids have we seen change their minds in recruiting wars the last umpteen years who could have made a huge difference in our W/L records ? Mason Fine stuck with us--we should stick with him. Mason and Jason: The Pride of Locust Grove
PlummMeanGreen replied to UNT 90 Grad's topic in Mean Green Football
Pulled this video up on August 31'st & got all inspired after watching it. If America-coast coast had families like the 2 from Locust Grove who raised these 2 Mean Green freshmen we'd have a better nation. To be admired are the ones who don't have such a solid home life but who over-come that just the same. GMG! -
A superb 10.5 minutes of Mean Green magic! This program needed this win so bad & then the guys in green went out & got it! GMG!

Plus hiring a coordinator who said he'd take our job as long as he didn't have to recruit outside Denton. That group squandered Apogee Stadium's debut & first few years of operations big time. We had great Junior Camps at Apogee, but didn't recruit near enough from those as other schools in CUSA who don't have anything close to the Mean Green Village would have. All that just makes me want to cuss truth be told.

Cerebus, wouldn't we all rather have that than keep a 10 year plan going with annual pay raises to those who have yet to hit .500 in career wins-----anywhere? We are truly a work in progress with (I'd presume) the least number of players on 'scholly's than any other school in NCAA Division 1. Yet I think this journey is going to be more interesting than many we've seen in recent decades---just a gut feeling with that. Apogee Stadium gives North Texas a big chance to do something we'd never be able to do at Fouts Field in a hundred years (albeit our OOC schedule was still better at Fouts but give Wren & his staff time to change that). GMG! PS: And yes, bowl folks, we love ya' & keep watching us but put a tap on those brakes for now? We do hope you prove some of our own timelines wrong, though.

What Results Are You Expecting the Next Two Weeks?
PlummMeanGreen replied to Cerebus's topic in Mean Green Football
Would love to see an offensive line that continues to show improvement. Would love to see the emergence of another freshmen or 2 who our coaches will not be able to keep on the bench due to their abilities. Would love to see a very loud student section this Saturday who continues to show the west side stands how to be............LOUD! I voted 1 & 1 (but like all of you want 2 & 0, of course), but thankfully no computer will determine the outcome of either game. No computer has ever been able to capture the heart or desire of the ones playing the game. GMG! BEAT MUTS! WHY NOT? -

Those were 2 great QB's alright, but Mason Fine is doing what he's doing on a team that at this point does not have near the supporting cast Scott Davis & Scott Hall had. SUMG & I used to compare Dave Campbell's Texas Football recruiting notes & during Darrell Dickey's 2'nd year in Denton his staff recruited 8 Texas Top 100's that meshed well with the Scott Hall era. Of course, the late Corky Nelson during our 1-AA era was recruiting players around Scott Davis that would beat several SWC teams & a home-cooking officiated near miss at UT-Austin in 1988. GMG!

Well, just what was Johnny "Football" Manziel's "real" height? Mason Fine plays tall. I just watched the Rice/North Texas highlights on You Tube & gosh darn that kid has a field presence & a command of what's going on. I hear he spends over-time watching film of our opponents. Keep him healthy, he "IS" special (as all our players are). GMG!

✳️ SMALL STEPS--BUT MEANINGFUL SMALL STEPS WITH SHORT TERM--LONG TERM PURPOSE... DJ'ed an event earlier in the evening but got in on half of the 4'th quarter & the 2 exciting over-times. How's 'bout that last exciting game-ending play of which the Rice Owls only needed mere inches to go toward getting a tie keeping the overtime going & then sudddenly ??? NORTH...TEXAS...WINS! ✳️ Yes, it's one game, but as a fan its been awhile recalling a game that felt so satisfying to win & one I feel was so important a win for this coaching staff, a young developing team & our entire football program moving forward. ✳️ We have some tough CUSA opponents for the balance of the season beginning with MTSU at Apogee this next Saturday, but I believe we as proud North Texas Exes & Mean Green fans can now agree we are seeing a solid foundation being laid (across the board) the way we've wanted & waited so many years. ✳️ Look forward to seeing many of you (again) this Saturday at amazing Apogee as we all continue to see our work in progress. ? For U of North Texas Greenbloods I feel our journey with this group will be as exciting for what I really feel will be a loftier than ever destination for Mean Green football, but still & to keep perspective---we take small meaningful steps. GMG!

Important information in regards to Rice game video stream
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Years ago Arkansas AD Frank Broyles in a feature article by Mickey Spagnola in the now defunct Dallas Times-Herald fired the first shot toward the SWC demise. He said the SWC private schools were not towing the rope & there were too many Texas schools in the SWC. (Probably even back then prepping UA for an SEC membership bid). If UH gets in the Big 12 look for UT & OU to start trying to pull a TAMU & leave for new surroundings. Actually, I think that happens anyway whether UH is admitted or not. -

Linemen, folks, we need linemen on both sides of the ball. That the toughest position for many G5 schools to recruit it seems. -
Will we win again? Massey says no...

Glad we still get to play the games & they're not decided by a computer. -
TV Blast From the Past: 1990 SMU/UNT
PlummMeanGreen replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Just Scattershootin' From the Hip (again): So many tried to remove all evidence that Fry had even been on the UNT payroll. It was a sad day to watch those who were responsible & who could not carry Fry's jock strap. He had upset some of the nestors downtown who were content to see our school continue as a Normal college. Moving to 1-AA seemed to be our only option to hear it from our administration. Many of us on this forum were at that hastily thrown-together meeting when Bill Vogel was calling every one he knew in DFW telling us "if you want to keep football at North Texas come to this meeting." Few in Dr. Hurley's administration would have had the feathers to drop football, but if there ever was a time to do it that would have been the time. 1975 season as a bell weather: There was just something very cool about hearing ABC's Keith Jackson on a national telecast brag about Hayden Fry's North Texas team beating the UT Vols. It was a national sports story. That kind of thing made a lot of Greenbloods get even greener. ?✳️? Then at the following Winter NCAA meetings North Texas was the talk of the convention. Good things happen when you do things the entire NCAA & nation notices. Then SWC member Rice U tried to hire Fry away from North Texas, but he told the media he had a better job In Denton. ✳️ ➡️ THIS THEN WAS THE CULTURE AT NORTH TEXAS WITH ONE GOOD THING HAPPENING AFTER ANOTHER ALL AROUND. ? Matter a fact, wasn't too long after the 1975 Winter NCAA meetings that AD Fry picked up the phone & called his bud Darrell Royal who signed UNT for 3-4 games with his U of Texas Longhorns. As I recollect, no school at our budget level in the entire USA had ever scheduled UT-Austin prior to or during that era. (UNT almost beat Earl Campbell & the Horns in that 1'st ever meeting in 1976 with the final score being 17-14). -
TV Blast From the Past: 1990 SMU/UNT
PlummMeanGreen replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Could you say if we had most of that October, 1990, Fouts Field crowd coupled with our present Apogee crowd that stadium expansion would soon be a priority? Retention of fans from decade to decade? How do we do it? What would work at North Texas? We'd all agree winning regularly would help. IMO, the expected (& continued) population explosion at UNT's main campus & in Denton County will have us filling Apogee Stadium by default at some point. It will happen in spite of anything we could do to screw it up! LOL! -

Pegram....Peagram ? Lose.........Loose ? ? -
Just annually recruit better than La Tech, Southern Miss & Marshall--the rest will take care of itself & 'fore you know it they'll be talking stadium expansion. ✳️ Truly, don't we have one helluva' product to sell with all our school has working for it? (We really do need to get some name schools into Apogee, though--at least Top 25-50 programs for starters)? With a projected (& expected from Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board) enrollment of 45,000, DFW alumnus numbers burgeoning (since most of us stick around these parts after graduation) & Denton County approaching 1,000,000 population, they probably need to be planning that sooner than later anyway. IMO, we don't have to fill Apogee 10 years in a row as some magic formula, either. That's for those who think we'll always be & do the same & we'll keep having the old NTSTC mind-set. Just sayin'...

PlummMeanGreen replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Someone posted North Texas should use part of the same game plan against the Rice Owls this Saturday as in October of 1990 when UNT QB Scott Davis "dink" passed SMU silly all night long with many of those short passes to the great Eric Pegram (who would become a Pittsburg Steeler Super Bowler, of course). -

Thanks for formatting, NorthTexan95. Tell you what.....I'll bring the entire SMU/North Texas game I have on DVD if you'll format it for YouTube? It will be of better quality since this vignette was done from my IPhone. Would you be interested? If so, then you could just keep the DVD since it would be on YouTube for posterity or give it to UNT video archives if they have such a department. I plan on being at the MUTS game on October 1'st so I could drop it off at Harry's tailgate area for you to pick up if that would be OK with you & Harry? Let me know when you know. GMG!
