Why not a State Fair game for North Texas?
PlummMeanGreen replied to TripleGrad's topic in Mean Green Football
Cotton Bowl Stadium: 95,000 seats SMU vs UNT ? (Many empty seats ) When SMU vs UNT eventually maxes out Apogee with 35,000 SRO put that number inside the CB Stadium at Fair Park & you still have 60,000 empty seats. Shouldn't we all be tired of empty seats galore by now? DO IT IN DENTON! GMG! -
Why not a State Fair game for North Texas?
PlummMeanGreen replied to TripleGrad's topic in Mean Green Football
Here's hoping the "Dallas Bridge" is that new 12 (or 16 lane) Super35 from Big D to Denton. When finished it will all but eliminate traffic jams & shorten the time it takes to get to Denton which Dallasites need to understand still didn't up & re-locate to southern Oklahoma. Moral: It's not that far from Dallas to Denton, folks! Now is probably the time for Denton & UNT officials to come up with a better in & out traffic scenario for Apogee because it will be one horrific bottle neck when we start filling our football palace and we will do that (if not by a natural progression of growth); that is, with UNT's projected growth to 45,000 enrollment by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in Austin; our growth near campus as well as in the city of Denton & Denton County. Harry, I hear all being said in this thread with an open mind, but some of us were saying the very same things about an annual game during the State Fair almost 40 years ago, but later on the real game-changer to ever trying that again came when ex Mayor Laura Miller (of Dallas Observer fame) turned down Jerry Jones offer to (basically) bring that part of Dallas into this millennium & subsequently many felt a kick in the gut & lost interest in going out there. Even the Cotton Bowl Classic left for Arlington while Texas/OU had to be begged to stay---(for now). Both schools wanted to move forward from the past & playing a game during the State Fair of Texas seemed to not be some kind of magical magnet as many traditionalists may have thought it would have been. Such trends from other high profile schools are things North Texas should pay attention IMO. (Now a bowl game at Fair Park is just that ....a bowl game & that does have a certain magic to it as almost 38,000 North Texas Mean Green fans can attest). A Sad Day For This Texan: I was floored going to the HOD Bowl game on 1/1/14 how run down things were in & around Fair Park. As a Texan it made me sad knowing how proud all living at the time during the 1936 Texas Centennial when that whole area was a shining buckle in the Lone Star State. Jerry Jones would have changed east Dallas for at least a half century but for an airhead ex Mayor with an agenda who last I heard doesn't even live in Texas. -

Yes Huff, we have been there--done that! NEVER AGAIN! Total bad experience, but we did get to hear a post game show with comic Elmer Phudpucker, TG "Party Time" Sheppard, Kitty "Honky Tonk Angels" Wells & Carl Perkins. That day ranks as one of the worst Mean Green memories for more than a few of us on this forum. -

A thought to ponder for all of us: 1. We can spend the next 5 years of being (always) right & say "we have no problem with an empty Upper Wing Zone (which was not even filled at Apogee's debut) or... 2. Sure would be nice to see kids under 12 with 1 or 2 ticket paying parents pack out that section of the stadium every home game because that even adds to our own Game Day experience & we know our football team would dig it. Sure it's a no-brainer, but such an under-taking would probably take an Athletic Dept. marketing "high energy" staff member to work such a promo almost full time so....would putting more young fans in seats be cost effective? GMG!

...or have we built a venue or 2 over a sacred burial ground? Seriously, I think AD Wren Baker & staff will study our forever lack of a consistent marketing plan & come up with one that increases attendance. A year in & year out winning football program would help the cause, but it seems that is on the way of being solved now. GMG !

I know a spot in the Upper Wing Zone that needs to be filled with kids & at least 1 parent who paid every game. I know that is easier said than done as it would take much footwork to promote that every Fall & I assure you.....someone would need to take that on as their baby. Hellsbells! Next thing you know some idiot will be talking about having a Band Day at a North Texas football game. Late Michigan Wolverine A.D. Don Canham had a huge Band Day every Fall until they couldn't afford to give up all the seats to those who wanted to pay to get in. I was not at the game last night. I had a wedding booked 6 months earlier I had to DJ but I snuck out to my car during the dinner portion & got all inspired. Then post-wedding reception and about 11 PM I called SUMG & asked how the game went and he "only" gave me a score. Then he said: NORTH TEXAS WON! I gave out a yell heard 'round Parker County, Texas! GMG! PS: If you've ever played the game at any level there is nothing more demoralizing than coming out of the locker room into an almost empty stadium.

I've seen film footage of that day in Dallas, November 22, 1963, & saw Bill Mercer strolling the hallway of a very crowded Dallas Police Department. I read where Mr. Mercer was at KRLD-Channel 4 at the time. Others at the Dallas Police Department in that vintage black & white footage was a Canadian named Peter Jennings, CBS Dan Rather, PBS Jim Lehrer & others. Mr. Mercer was also the first voice of the Texas Rangers when the Senators of Washington D.C. moved to Arlington. HOF & former Los Angeles pitcher Don Drysdale was his color man. I remember as a UNT student living off Denton's Eagle Drive listening to that first broadcast. GMG!

Fall, 1985. I took this pic of Craig Way (the radio voice of the Texas Longhorn Network for many years) & his UNT teacher, ie one Bill Mercer who taught many UNT-graduated sports broadcasters that have had impressive broadcast jobs just about everywhere here in Texas and the great Southwest. Many of you might be able to name some of them & those they broadcasted for. Please list them as my memory is getting short. Former UNT athletic promotions director Jim Hobdy had had a silent auction at a Dallas Mean Green Club gathering & I won the "Mean Green Radio Network" press box guest pass at that auction. The late, great Ron Shanklin & friend to many of us on GMG.com was behind me as I took this pic. GMG! PS: Read where Mrs. Craig Way was fighting cancer so from many of us in the Mean Green Nation good thoughts and prayers for our fellow alum's wife.

Still we take small steps, folks! They have been significant small steps, though. I believe Seth Littrell will build a consistent winner and no one hit wonder. A very good team can have a poor game and still win the game. Are we there yet? Bothers me that my student era is still the only one in over half a century who has seen a HFC leave Denton above .500. We can still be the new Kansas State of ex North Texas assistant coach Bill Snyder fame. That school had about a 100 year losing program! :( GMG! -
We would have played a Big 10 school, but they didn't have enough with the 6 win minimum. That's why we played UNLV.

Do all remember when Navy came to venerable Fouts Field with that flyover from Carswell AFB in Fort Worth as the Green Brigade played the Star Spangled Banner while...EVERYONE STOOD UP? I still get goose bumps.???????? Still amazed how UH came to Apogee to help us open it; how they got all inspired to build their own even hiring some of the creative ( or was it construction) players who built our football palace & then.......they had a plan to recruit toward their football venue while we piddled around with a staff who were living off Todd Dodge's recruits to have one winning season but the good news is as I quote that old song lyric is ......."but that was yesterday and yesterday's gone!" THANK...THE...LORD!✳️?✳️ *THANK YOU OFFENSIVE LINE FOR YOUR HARD WORK AS YOU PROTECTED MAGIC MASON & GAVE OUR RB's A PATH! *THANK YOU COACHES & THE REST OF THE TEAM FOR YOUR HARD WORK, TOO! *THANK YOU WREN & STAFF FOR GIVING US A WINNING FUTURE ONCE AGAIN!
