  1. Probably easier to see a real culture change & steadier building of better, larger & more consistent attendance numbers once we've had at least 3 winning seasons in a row rather than 3 very important wins so far as we take small steps to build things unseen for awhile at dear ol' alma mater. Shouldn't be that we lose 10,000 fans in Apogee attendance in 1 week; that is, from the SMU game to the Bethune Cookman game the following Saturday. For sure BC is a no-name school, but we fit a similar description with our 4 game series with Darrell Royals UT Longhorns in the 70's yet UT fans still showed en mass at our games. Still a true snapshot of our culture will materialize when we have decades filled with way more wins than losses. Former UNT asst. coach Bill Snyder's Kansas State Wildcats began their Phoenix rise with a win over a team dressed in green from Denton, Texas, & in the closing seconds of that game (see it on YouTube if not too painful to watch) yet...while today at the U of North Texas we really seem to have all the pieces in place to have our own KSU'esque come-back from years of losing (albeit we have had few one hit wonders sprinkled in as happened on 1/1/14). UNT President Smatresk quote in the below signature is really a good start for what can be great things to come. GMG!
  2. Then we will take the (dad joke) "Mr. Clean" Bowl, instead?
  3. Probably the best way to look at this game. Jeez, we never knew we'd be at this stage of Mean Green football talk this season anyhow but... WE'LL TAKE IT & WE'LL TAKE ANY BOWL OFFERS, TOO!
  4. Our Mean Green offensive machine has a propensity to be able to run and pass. I like it. GMG!
  5. Still shocked that Texas Tech hired Jerry Moore away from us who had a 2 year record of an even .500. Takes a while for shock to wear off of me I suppose. GMG! PS: Then Moore made it a successful career at App. State. Sometimes a change of scenery can do wonders, eh?
  6. North Texas "only" move up is the MWC. We would get the same treatment from UH (and SMU) has from the Big 12 if we were to apply for the AAC. They'd say North "WHO?" Some things are just written in concrete in our glorious Lone Star State & pecking order as it began with the old Southwest Conference seems to be one of those things written in concrete. It's a vicious cycle that is so hard to break. If we'd had about a 20 season in a row winning streak and sold out each game it would still be difficult IMHO. Again: The Mountain West Conference is our best move up; otherwise, all these other G-5 conference scenarios are lateral moves or in some cases maybe even a drop down. Only way the MWC would make sense (and cents) is if we had almost all the CUSA West move into that league. If they want a Texas presence in the MWC that would sure give it to them. GMG!
  7. UH will have as much success blocking a UT-Houston as we did UT-Dallas (Richardson) back in the day. When UT has a plan---GET OUT OF THEIR WAY! GMG!
  8. UT-AUSTIN.
  9. The North Texas vs Navy game at our former venue (Fouts Field) was one of my all time favorite games on campus. The flyover during the Star Spangled Banner was fabulous plus Navy had a good representative crowd in attendance. It was a high scoring back & forth with the lead kind of game with Navy winning. GMG!
  10. ?Merely projecting. As far as any Bowl talk, just so excited we are not having to wait to Year 5 of one of those old "5 year plans" coaches in the NCAA used to talk about (or their AD doing the same). That was also called: Buying Time!? GMG!
  11. Jack, was that BYU game when their Golden Richards (& future D. Cowboy) went ballistic on the Mean Green all game long, especially on kick-off returns? GMG!
  12. If we were so fortunate to go bowl'ing I think many would still prefer playing a Big 10 opponent in the HOD Bowl than someone from the MAC in the Bahamas. GMG!
  13. Greg Carter, Richland HS, Hurst, Tx. He engineered a winning game vs. UL-Monroe & on a regional ABC-TV (ch. 8) telecast. DMN sportswriter Cathy Harasta would write a special blurb showing the Mean Green's very impressive Nielsen ratings in that TV game's time slot.
  14. I had forgotten that & just how long has WKU been playing at this level?☹️️
  15. Yes I did. Very, very impressed with a Cherokee Indian true freshmen from Oklahoma playing better & showing more leadership than a number of QB's we've seen up there the last 5 decades even by some of their senior year. GMG! PS: I say "Cherokee Indian" out of respect & admiration of their race & culture. My late brother-in-law was from South Dakota & half Sioux as in the Sitting Bull lineage. He also did not have any problem with the name Washington Redskins--he said it just honored his people. I concurred. * Great music EagleMBA! ?
  16. If UNT wants to upgrade to another conference we'd make a ?-line to the MWC since we know the AAC is not a choice due to politics. If we don't others may & we will wonder once again: "Why weren't we more pro-active & let "THAT" school(?) one up us?" A MWC West Division consisting of a coalition of Texas schools now in CUSA would be the real deal. Then we'd all but be on a par in football with the AAC most years. Right now we are in Sun Belt 2.0 except for Rice & UTEP. The Wren & our DFW location with a school that is projected to hit 45,000 enrollment may be our aces in the hole; that is, to insure that we won't lock-step ourselves into going backwards with the next round of conference re-alignment & come up a day late/dollar short. GMG!
  17. My hope is that North Texas doesn't have to wait for all CUSA conference-mates to have down years for us to win its championship. My dream is when we win it we'll be a Top 25 program & others will be chasing us to do the same. Ex conference-mate Boise State would have been a good model to emulate for most of the last quarter century. GMG!
  18. In Barry Switzer's book "Bootlegger's Boy" he mentioned UNT Athletic Hall of Fame QB Kenny Washington (OU Joe's brother) who Hayden signed to a LOI from Port Arthur Lincoln HS (which was coached by his father, Joe, Sr). Switzer's comment was & I loosely paraphrase: "if we'd had a different kind of offense at OU than the Wishbone I would have recruited Ken Washington in a NY minute." Nevertheless, thought I'd bring KW into this discussion albeit he was a QB we would mention many times AN ODDITY: Kenny Washington & Ken Smith were the #1 & #2 QB's both hurt the day the Mean Green went to Knoxville and beat the U of Tennessee with 3'rd string QB Glen Ray. We cost U of TN HFC Bill Battle his job even with him having a 6 & 5 Volunteer football team (which would have been bowl elgible today). Fast Forward: Battle turned his lemon into lemonade by creating a business that everyone reading this post who has NCAA sportswear or jersies has one of his products in their dirty clothes hamper or hanging in a closet. The business Bill Battle established? College Licensing. So as the late commentator Paul Harvey used to say on his daily radio show: "And now you know the rest of the story." GMG!
  19. Yes, they would Joe. Army is footprint-proof because they are...Army. GMG!
  20. I remember reading a Mickey Spagnola article in the now defunct Dallas Times-Herald how (then) Arkansas AD Frank Broyles listed "too many Texas schools in one conference" as one of the reasons they vaulted for the SEC. I still think UT & OU go PAC 12 or SEC & will use that as one of their reasons. Is the PAC 12 too far for UT & OU to change their conference footprint? Well, with their athletic budgets for football alone it isn't. I think the SEC would be their 2'nd choice if the Aggies didn't go political & blackball them. GMG!
  21. I've been saying almost since the Big 12 formed to watch for UT and OU to eventually vault. I really think they both feel they are in a SWC 2.0 When TAMU left for the SEC don't think the Horns & Sooner Nation hadn't noticed how the Aggies are playing similar "The State" schools like themselves in the SEC & in much larger stadiums than you'll ever see in Waco, Fort Worth, Manhattan, Ames & Lubbock. I think UT & OU will check out the PAC 12 first, then who knows what the SEC would do to make room for them except TAMU would probably black-ball both of them! LOL! GMG!
  22. A look at what Virginia Tech's indoor facility will look like. Video provided to the Roanoke Times by HKS Sports & Entertainment and W.M.Jordan Company. As I recall, HKS was the architect firm that designed Apogee Stadium & the Dallas Cowboys AT&T stadium. https://youtu.be/rpeyQAw_-_s ________________________________________________________________________________________ And 1 year later in the below link is the VaTech Hokies's finished product https://youtu.be/xYJCYXMg010 PS: Per the YouTube video, Virginia Tech's IPF will serve a few other Varsity teams so it will be used year round. GMG!
  23. What a post! ?
  24. Many Texas high schools have IPF's including the one here in Weatherford.
