UNT alums are like SMU alums………CIVIL. I’ve never seen a fan from any school get turned down for a Brat or a beer. It is a Texas thang’. Cheftell KingDL1 aka Sky ✈️ King has Texas-sized meatballs & he’s’ quite proud of them. You’ll usually find Harry of GMG fame at that tailgate. ❇️ Tailgate pics from the past I thought SMU’ers would get a kick out of this pic below. ( Actually, that one taken not far from Kyle Field).🙄

Austin Aune named C-USA player of the week
PlummMeanGreen replied to Coach Andy Mac's topic in Mean Green Football
To me he has more confidence in being a field general & in zipping the ball to his receivers. He’s leading the pass more for his receivers albeit he still has the occasional “behind the receiver” toss. I think the coaches ain’t blowing smoke when they themselves saw such improvements. He just cannot cause a turnover vs SMU. He needs an almost flawless game before the home crowd. ••• I hope the UNT students break another Apogee attendance record. If I hear the students are projected to do just that I will have to change my attendance guess, too.- 9 replies

Does anyone use this spot if there’s a spot to use? It appears there are many spots around this lake. GMG -

Can Aune take the next step?
PlummMeanGreen replied to NorthTexasSportsNetwork's topic in Mean Green Football
I’m sure you’ve all heard how there is much improvement from the 1’st game to the 2’nd game. I hope that is the case this Saturday evening. It might be a game where we have a few (as Fry called them) “exotic” plays? I remember when UNT icon Bill Mercer was on the KVIL morning radio show with Ron Chapman how they were talking about one of our games with UT-Austin. Seems a Longhorn fan had complained that one of the Mean Green’s TD’s was a “ridiculous junior high” call. Quick witted Mercer quipped— “well, it worked against UT!” 😱 GMG! GMG! -
Attendance prediction for smut?
PlummMeanGreen replied to Hunter Green's topic in Mean Green Football
As in any above average crowd at UNT it will be day of game walk up ticket sales that will ultimately determine how close to 30,100 we get. -
Attendance prediction for smut?

Even at 25,000 Apogee Stadium is loud as hell. I may have to turn down my hearing aids. PS: Your cousin Guido coming’ Phil?🙄 -
Attendance prediction for smut?
PlummMeanGreen replied to Hunter Green's topic in Mean Green Football
29,999 SMU will bring a record number of fans for a Denton game. Their “stay in the shadows” fans in section 202 talk about moving to the traditional SMU side when the sun is no longer a factor, but SMU fans & UNT student overflow may have already filled it. GMG! -

Can someone explain why Phil yells so much?

Tough love? My HS football coach was a screamer God rest his soul. GMG! -
I think Trieb will be just fine. Getting double-teamed almost every play across from an offensive line that were never flagged for non-stop holding can put a cramp in any DL’s style. Watch the replay! UNT was lucky to get out of that game with a significant win. I’ was proud of my alma maters college football team last night. 🟨🟥••• A TSU-SM grad called me this morning & said he really enjoyed the game. He also said he’d like to come to Apogee Stadium for his first time ever to see the SMU game. GMG!

****OFFICIAL UNT VS. UTEP IN-GAME DISCUSSION***
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
A SUNDAY EPISTLE… Obviously, SMU will be favored to win. What’s new? They stay steps ahead of the rest of us in what’s happening in all of the NCAA football neighborhood. They been doing NIL long before we could spell NIL. Sonny Dykes intensified SMU’s version of NIL. Before they started stockpiling with it, Mason Fine & the Mean Green tore them out a new body orafice one night at Apogee in 2018. SMU didn’t know what hit them. (I’d say Fine & 30,000 Mean Green fans hit them). Dykes even probably started 2’nd guessing his religion. Oh well… So much about SMU even the biggest Stang’hater has to admire albeit they won’t. They run their program like it’s a business. It’s taken us awhile to figure that part out & start doing the same. We’re even late on NIL, but I believe Rick V will help us catch up. BACK IN THE DAY: If SMU had to pay a good black athlete to come to their lilly white campus filled with future Thurston Howells the 3’rd they would do it. They started doing that in a serious way with Pony Expresser Eric Dickerson. That ended up being a very costly (& deathly) deal that went all the way to the Texas Governor’s Mansion. (Remember Gov. Bill ? He signed the house bill changing our name forever to UNT back in the 80’s. Wonder why he didn’t tell his fellow alums we were no longer, uh, NTSU?🙃😆 SMU ON THE MOVE: The Stangers have a big head start over North Texas in so many ways—except enrollment & DFW alumni numbers. UNT students will fill half of Apogee this Saturday night for that football extravaganza. The Green Brigade will be blowing their windpipes out attempting to outplay the 100 piece & a twirler brassy loud Mustang Band. No matter the score the night will be full of what makes college football an event that fills 100,000 seat stadiums. I’ve always liked the full entertainment package as far back as 1960 when I was age 10 at a Baylor vs. Rice game at venerable Rice Stadium. I can still smell the aroma of pipe tobacco & cigars in that venue. Never got that entire experience out of my mind, either. RIGHT PLACE AT RIGHT TIME. UNT wasn’t that when the SWC was getting established. SMU is still trying to catch that SWC lightning in a bottle with some kind of a P5 existence. (Can you blame them)? Still their being an ex SWC member does so much for them. They do not have the attendance of a former P5 school, yet their name still has been casually mentioned in P5 re-alignment—so has UTSA, Denton’ites & fellow DFW alums.🙄 SMU & INTEGRATION: StangerTown integrated with Jerry Levias. Then SMU AD/HFC Hayden Fry had to beg the SMU administration to let him even talk to Port Author Lincoln’s Jerry Levias in 1964-65. UNT had already integrated with the great Abner Haynes & Dr. Leon King 10 full years before SMU’s Fry begged his bosses to let him even say “Hi!” to the great Jerry Levias. SUNDAY EPISTLE Part 2–not today. *Just going to sit back & enjoy last nights big TV win by the Mighty Mean Green! Abner Haynes at Fouts Field 195__? (I bet #86 didn’t catch him)!😆 GMG! -
Last night had all the potential to be a royal gut kick to all of us in the Mean Green Nation, but instead (for me) it turned into one of my all time favorite Mean Green Moments. We should all admit that UTEP was hardly chopped liver. They have a damn good football program. We were in hostile territory last night & still came back with a win. How duly impressive. Our MG “D” bent but did not break last night. Yes, the great Phil Bennett has his work cut out for him again this season as he needs to quickly develop a defense that for now has much raw talent with good potential. (I never bet against Phil Bennett—do you)? Maybe a good NIL program will help him with more additional AAC-type talent, but he ain’t done this Fall, either). GMG!

****OFFICIAL UNT VS. UTEP IN-GAME DISCUSSION***
PlummMeanGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
👏👏First of all, is this the best UTEP football team many of us have seen the last 50+ years? They are going to win some key CUSA games this Fall. Yet…was it me or did it appear the Miners very talented offensive line were blatantly holding all night long? I’ve watched some of the game replay already & officiating last night was one of the worst I can ever remember—it was terrible. Just glad it didn’t cost us the game. I think Littrell & Bennett would more than concur. (Will the CUSA officiating crews for our games in 2022 be going away gifts from Commish’ Judy)? Road games have rarely been kind to our favorite school’s football team in the past, so I think we should applaud & be proud of the Mean Green’s efforts in the Sun Bowl stadium last night and—better yet, they did it in front of a late night national TV audience to boot! *** We need to hasten our NIL program in a very big way for us to annually compete for an American A.C. football championship. We are competing against those who will pay up to $36K per player for said players to fall in love with their school overnight. See most of you at fabulous Apogee Stadium this Saturday. GMG! -
BillySee58…What’s the skinny on this transfer? North Texas bolsters defensive line: The Mean Green added depth to the defensive front with a transfer of Abilene Christian's Kadren Johnson. The 6-4, 249-pound lineman recorded 20 tackles, including three tackles for loss and one sack in 11 games. He'll join Enoch Jackson and Roderick Brown up front. lol

Makes me happy to know we have 2 Mean Green offensive linemen who could be 1’st team All CUSA performers this season. Going to especially watch RB Oscar Adaway with great interest tonight. Some of you have said he’s been a monster in Fall camp. Does our JUCO All American transfer Tom Trieb have a nickname yet? I’d suggest “Manster” but there’s already been one of those in our area albeit years ago. Talked with a fellow alum this morning & our common theme was how “anticipatory” we were about this season opener. Hope we all have reason to celebrate. We need that. GMG!

This wasn’t a bad MG broadcast team either in Photo 1 Craig Way & Bill Mercer. The above photo I took at a 1985 UNT Homecoming game at venerable Fouts Field. Photo 2 Dave Barnett interviews 90 something yrs old Bill Mercer last Fall at Apogee Stadium. Photo 3 Several from the Bill Mercer Sports Broadcasters Tree from his years of teaching Sports Broadcasting at UNT. (Recognize any of them)?
