All Bowl games actually matter

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in Austin projects North Texas to reach 45,000 in enrollment I presume sooner than later. We seem to be building facilities and dorms already to meet their goal for our school. -
I am a simple man who lives a simple life & sometimes comes up with what could be construed as simple answers & one such to getting all our Dallas bowl fans to Denton will be when the new 16 lane Super35 Interstate from Big D to Denton is finished. The drive time to Apogee Stadium will be shortened considerably.

Sounds to me if Frank Wilson signs this class their message board can start the proverbial "we won't be able to keep this guy" thread. Fact is...they won't, especially if they have a good season this Fall. When we seem to be getting our butts kicked in recruiting my consolation is still (once again) how back in the early days we had competitive teams against perennial Top 10 recruiting program "the" UT down in Austin. First time we played them Earl Campbell had to make a near end of game touchdown to beat us 17-14. Yes, we'd all like 5 star HS recruits who play (minimum) at the 3 star level collegiately, but most of the best teams we ever had at North Texas never won any "Best Recruiting Class" awards.

Life can be so unfair at times. Always have a Plan B if Plan A doesn't pan out. My Money says Zach does.

Ah, Rosenberg! Fort Bend County, great ranches, lots of Czechs in the area & used to be a post-Texas Friday Night football game stop for our Danbury Panthers team at a place called Bill Williams Fried Chicken. I'm guessing it's no longer around. -
All-time best UNT FB player you ever witnessed

Jack, I talked briefly with Ray Renfro's son Mike the evening his dad was honored by North Texas in the old Silver Eagle Suite. Yes, part of that conversation was about a pass he caught as a Houston Oiler from QB Dan Pastorini. It was ruled a "no catch." ➡️ That game was against our Mean Joe Greene's Pittsburgh Steelers. ❓GrayEagle, had Abner Haynes & Ray Renfro played their pro ball in New York wouldn't they be in the NFL Hall of Fame today? -
North Texas sign mid term trio

"Methinks, Olive Oil, we are going to have a fine recruiting class. Now where's my hamburger, Wimpy!"? I remember a time when our school used to play a perennial NCAA D1 elite school that had national Top 10 recruiting classes every year & we played them --off...their...Longhorn...hooves...so for those in panic mode--gain a proper perspective on all this recruiting. ?One SEC assistant coach recently said he was tired of coaching 4 star HS kids who never developed at the college level. GMG! -
For most of my adult life post-1976 graduation I feel our school leadership has squandered our athletic program & its ability to advance. ➡️ FWIW...All this is what Wren Baker has inherited & why I think he needs more time than just 1 year to lay a solid foundation & not just build a quick fix on sand--we've had that too many other times & look at its results? Yet If you'd told me that while a student & then 1 year after my graduation that that run of 4 consecutive winning seasons would not be duplicated to this day I would have said you were crazy. ➡️✳️➡️ Good news is...our situation never duplicated or was as dismal as Kansas State's before Bill Snyder came to town so with that.....there is hope. ? Call me crazy, but I really like our chances with this present group--sort of a 6'th sense kind of thing I guess. We are due for our pendulum to swing back, though, & the direction we all want it to.

North Texas Football Color Barrier Legacy

How's 'bout an award-winning Beyond the Green-quality video & a mini-theatre created inside the Athletic Center for all visitors (including potential recruits) that would pay huge dividends in telling the North Texas story to many more people starting with those in the North Texas Metroplex who have no idea about much of our history? Yet another one of many ideas from GMG.com that will be ignored I'm sure. Looking at the last 40 plus years of those we pay to be proactive & come up with ideas to spice things up maybe listen to the stock-holders every once in a while? Stock-holders? The UNT students, North Texas Exes & Mean Green fans? ➡️ Giving credit where it's due, though, I still applaud the construction of Apogee Stadium at a time when America was sucking hind teat economically. That timeline in our country a huge reason we got such a good deal on a stadium that the commissioner of a major conference said "North Texas got a steal of a deal." -
MGB: Recruiting status update -- Yes rankings matter

Recruit a 4A or 5A 1'st team All District lineman with size (or room to grow in the weight room) along with quick feet & a good college line coach can many times turn him into a 3 or 4 star college talent. Haven't most of our best linemen at UNT for years fit that profile? -
La Tech was the school I had in mind to raid their top assistant(s) several years ago. Think I even may have told Harry that back in the day. (And who is Frank Wilson)? IMHO, jury still out for the Littrell staff since this is their first full year to recruit, but Mason Fine is still one of the best QB recruits I've seen at UNT the last 40 plus years I've followed this. I know for some he doesn't pass the NFL test but neither did any of Darrell Royal's QB's of which none of his were ever drafted.
-
UNT's struggles? Oh, like a school that has no D1 venues on its campus but rather plenty of commuters who need UBER to get to your games is CUSA's new standard bearer? I think not. Did you see all those people wearing green at the HOD Bowl game on that ESPN televised game a few weeks ago? Pretty dismal situation you say? (For you I'm sure it was disheartening--but more amazing is how only "2 years earlier" there were even more fans in the Cotton Bowl wearing green in a Mean Green bowl win).
-
I've said for years we need to raid & pay handsomely key assistants from CUSA rival schools who are beating us on the recruiting trails. Hell, we built what would now be a $150 million stadium so can we afford such an assistant coach? (The answer is...yes).?

North Texas Football Color Barrier Legacy

Abner Haynes told me a story years ago when he came to Fort Worth with Ron Shanklin (who was on a recruiting trip for Corky Nelson). The 3 of us were eating lunch at FW's Dos Gringos. Abner told Shank' & I about when North Texas took a train down to H-town to play a Missouri Valley conference game with the Houston Cougars. I hope that story is in this book; that is, the story of what happened on that train when the hotel refused service to Haynes & Leon King because they were black. I won't give that story away here until I find out if it's in the book. GMG! -
Better yet, what will happen to that B12 group if UT & OU leave as many predict? One prediction is how the leftovers will still not want another Texas-based school among their group. If I were Smatresk & 'the Wren I'd still pursue another direction for UNT. I'd make a bee-line out of this far flung CUSA hodgepodge of way too many upstarts & recent D1 additions & head west with about 3-4 other CUSA schools. We will never be able to sell our wannabe big time fan base to show up at Apogee with games vs most any CUSA East school other than La Tech and......if there will be no TV revenue in the foreseeable future then it's all about Apogee turnstile receipts & donors. GMG!
