  1. Kid? “Burn your buns!”😆 GMG!
  2. Awe, shucks. 😞 I'd guess they will go to UTSA.
  3. Anyone know? What was the Arkansas game ticket allotment for UNT? I hear it was sold out...is that true? GMG!
  4. In a perfect world & for a new conference we'd put all the SWC leftovers together with North Texas, La Tech, U of L & Arkansas State, but we know we do not have a perfect world. 😞 GMG! BEAT THE HOGS!
  5. I'm part Irish and Scottish so yes, the "onions were being cut" near my desktop especially toward the end of that video with Fine's mom & dad on their living room sofa. What a story Mason Fine is and all who raised & knew him growing up. Already posted that video on my Facebook page--I hope others will do the same. What a story this Mean Green football team is becoming, too. It's takes a team to do it all. GMG!
  6. As always, I concur with most all you post. 70 years following North Texas football? Well, my 45 years makes me think I'm a newbie fan. LOL! And another thing from another thread: We don't have to win CUSA championships 10 times before we look for brighter lights and we don't have to fill Apogee 100 times before we think about expansion. Me'thinks if your standing still & not looking ahead for your school in today's NCAA climate that usually means you might as well be going backwards. (You do learn a few things following all this for 45 years). AND.....GrayEagle, could the phrase you were looking for from your "old alumni buddy" have been... Bloom Where Planted? :) PS: I was looking for you at Apogee the other night where you used to sit & couldn't find you. Did you change seats? BEAT THOSE ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS, MEAN GREEN!
  7. An admitted novice, but on some runs when it becomes a quagmire in the middle over our center, old #3 used to take a quick 180 to the right (or left) & break for some long runs. Some of our young RB’s seem to want to find a yard or 2 as they stay in the quagmire.
  8. From pics I saw of the SMU-TCU game we didn’t do so bad. Granted, Incarnate Word was never going to get casual fans out to Apogee, but one alum told me last night: “Why care who the opponent is—come support “OUR” team.
  9. Totally agree, TB ! I still look forward to the day that our culture changes to the extent that weather has no effect on our crowd. I think of all those Big 10 fans filling their stadiums in miserable conditions all sitting in the snow. I cant wait for our CUSA opener against La Tech with the Mean Joe Greene statue unveiling before the game.. LTU will probably bring some fans since they all have revenge on their minds! GMG!
  10. Last night I sat by the parents of one who graduates from a SA area HS this December & will enroll at UNT this Spring, He kicks field goals. The son sat on the other side of his mother but following NCAA rules I did not communicate with him, but did give a Texas-friendly nod.🙄 I didn’t get their name as I’d guess our GMG.com recruiting gurus would know that but I asked the kids papa what was the longest field goal his son had kicked & he said a 65 yard FG at practice. I apologized to him for our rain crowd, but then showed him an IPhone pic of the SMU crowd last week which duly impressed him & his wife. Very nice people.
  11. Just more speculating, but what kind of schools might North Texas schedule who'd bring a bunch of fans to either a 31,000 seat or a 40,000 seat Apogee Stadium? SUMG has told me forever that BYU would be such a school for an Apogee appearance or 2 or 3 because of all the Mormons in DFW. Our largest crowd until last Saturday evening was against Baylor U & we know Baptists are plentiful in DFW & the Lone Star State. The below link is how this group in Utah sees their future in a hopeful TV revenue-producing environment. The kind of revenue environment that would make a 40K seat Apogee make more sense if we in our future had a similar P5 kind of TV revenue existence. https://www.sltrib.com/sports/byu-cougars/2018/07/28/byus-declaration-football/
  12. These kind of games make me nervous and that's because of a school North Texas once played called Cal Poly-Pomona. The week after North Texas beat the University of Tennessee Volunteers up in Knoxville we had a bye. The week after the bye we had a home game against Cal Poly-Pomona. Many laughed at their name wondering how (and why) would we schedule that California school. We students were wondering how much we'd run up the score in that game, too. Fact is, we barely escaped with our lives barely beating a school called Cal Poly-Pomona who took us all the way to the end of the 4'th quarter before a near sellout at old (as Bill Mercer would call it) "venerable" Fouts Field. Beat Incarnate Word! GMG!
  13. Old Man River here, but in 1975 Fry turned down the HFC'ing job (offered by SWC member Rice U's AD Dickie Moegle) and 3 years later got a much better job offer for the Big 10 U of Iowa job where he stayed some 22 years & made it into the College Football Hall of Fame. A Never-Ending Rumor That Never Ends: What if mega dollar programs UT and OU leave the Big 12, then how attractive are any of the leftover schools for a coach with a lot of upside? If that happened TCU would have thrown a bunch of good money after bad; that is, if the Big 12's 2 flagship schools vault. Me'thinks Seth wants to stick around & build something in Denton. He's apparently telling this to those who count up there in Denton. He seems to have a vision (and an open check book) for great things he seems to feel can happen in Denton. Texas Tech (as fine a school as they are) have never won a conference football championship while in the SWC (albeit they tied with 2 or 3 others in the SWC for that one shared title) & have not won a Big 12 football championship. There is a not so subtle reason for that & some have said in the past decades that top African American athletes do not want to put on cowboys boots, chew some Red Man & do the Texas 2 Step at some kind of a Billy Bobs 2.0. We're all speculating as is what this message board is all about but...........I think Seth Littrell stays in Denton at least 6 years.
  14. This is what ADLER said in bold & I've never heard it said better & with such brevity. (The "quote" link was not available for whatever reason). ______________________________________ I know there is the "keep selling it out first" argument, and I hear you, but you're wrong. But, having a 30K stadium and a 28K fan base is going to keep regional P5 schools from wanting to schedule games at Apogee. The costs of not expanding Apogee may therefore exceed the costs of expansion through lost revenue. One of the main reasons schools would schedule UNT is to provide a game in the metroplex that their DFW fans and alumni can attend. Unlike SMU we do not have a practically empty stadium to offer. Where would the fans of Baylor, Kansas State, Texas Tech, A&M, or TCU sit if we were to schedule them? North Texas was able to host Baylor, Kansas State, and TCU at Fouts Field because we had a relatively small fan base at the time. That is simply not he case now. Games against Texas Tech and A&M were diverted to the Cowboys Stadium because our own stadium couldn't accommodate the crowds. We certainly don't want to have to do that again. Growing pains. What a great thing to have.
  15. Just as there are haters in this world who don’t want America to succeed so are there some in our neck of the woods who can’t handle “the Sleeping Giant” in the northern part of Texas fully waking up for a decade or more of winning seasons & success.
  16. Short Story, uh, Long...😓 The North Texas upside has never been better & that I'd say before the SMU game of which none of us before last Saturday had ever experienced such a Game Day at UNT. From the Archives of Old People Who Keep Repeating the Same Stories Again & Again:👴 North Texas once had a HFC who was offered a Southwest Conference Head Football Coach's gig & turned it down saying he had a better job in Denton . (Quotes like that you never forget--SUMG might want to confirm that that was in deed said). After Said Coach stayed another 3 glorious years at UNT then a Big 10 school came a-callin'. The latter job would be better than the first offer he received 3 years earlier. Texas Tech would be a temptation for some coaches, but having been a casual fan of the school since birth the one thing that has always stuck in my craw is that the Red Raiders (best to my memory) have only "tied" for 1 conference championship since they entered the SWC in 1956 & to this day a sole conference football championship has eluded them. (Other side of that coin is that would be a challenge for some coaches who would want to be the first to win an outright conference football championship in Lubbock). My gut tells me we have Seth LIttrell as our Mean Green HFC for at least 6 seasons. He seems to have his own dreams for our alma mater's football program. Why go to a P5 where fans call for your head if you don't win an N.C. by Year 2? Seth is a major reason many great things are happening in Denton; his being on the UNT payroll has our President, AD and BOR's wanting to improve our present facilties with an Indoor Practice Facility that will soon (enough) be up & running and....& (who knows) maybe a stadium expansion if the NCAA starts doing the Cotton Eye Joe conference re-alignment thing again. As FFR used to post on this forum:: "It's All Good--It's all Green! GMG!
  17. It just started.

  18. Any of you ever seen this video snippet? I ran across this somewhere surfing the net. It was Hayden Fry's very 1'st game to coach at North Texas against the UT-Arlington Mavericks in Texas Stadium. My first game as a UNT student matter a fact and many of you on GMG.com were there, too. Amazingly clean, sharp video since its been 45 years since that first game on September 8, 1973. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlZufkojsbE
  19. Thanks Harry & KingDL1 ! It was great to see all of you there inside the stadium or near its entrance. Huff, that means you.:) I concurred with your assessment of the game completely but OMG....what a great night--the greatest in memory if not ever. GMG!
  20. FFR, the question I have is how many actual butts in seats did TCU have against Southern U compared to our game with SMU? You know if they had 25,000 at Amon Carter Stadium that number would be announced to be much larger. TCU just getting pretty heady over there--it's just a private school thing in Texas. Hope UT and OU don't bring them down to earth by leaving the Big 12. 👾 The Fort Worth Star-Telegram used to assign UNT a beat reporter thru the years, but major U.S. city newspapers have so streamlined their entire staffs due to the internet that their Sports Page makes a better liner for the parakeet cage than something you'd want to read anymore. I miss their entire FWST Sports Dept. staff when they were there because they were good and UNT didn't suffer for lack of coverage most the time. Former DRC Sports Editor Art Chapman worked for the Startle'Gram until his health became an issue, but it was not in the Sports Section. GMG!
  21. Amen, wardly. We have absolutely no control over any of this so don't any of you grow an ulcer worrying. Boise State lost (was it 4 HFC's) in an 8 year stretch? Many of us were watching our former conference mates, ie, the BSU Broncos as to what they were doing right (and we wrong), but the amazing thing to many of us was how they stayed a Top 25 program thru most all of those coaching turnovers so I guess there are silver linings even when coaching turnovers temporarily rock a school's ship. Someone mentioned Briles.....A business owner here in Weatherford knows Briles well & thinks he'll be redeemed & at some point someone will give him another chance. Americans are a very forgiving people, but not sure if Briles stepped over that line beyond forgiveness at Baylor. GMG!
  22. Of course, not needed now, but you can't base this on now, can you....now? (OK, enough of this color font thing for now--time to get down to Sirius business). GMG! IMO, any expansion has to be based on growth projections for Denton & Denton County, future enrollment numbers at UNT which should be somewhere out in outer space now & the growing alumnus numbers less than 1-2 hours from Apogee. Stadium. I've heard anywhere from 100K & even 250K North Texas Exes less than 2 hours from UNT's Denton campus. Not sure which numbers to believe.
  23. Just awoke from my long nap & “WALA!” It’s football season! A Potpourri Manifesto of Sorts (what else did you expect)?😊 In my 45’th year of following Mean Green football this last Saturday at a rockin’ & hop’n (it's electrifin’) Apogee Stadium topped anything I’ve seen in over 4 decades. It was a major U of North Texas production involving everyone—every group...ALL—-THE—-WAY!” Didn’t we all leave Apogee with complete satisfaction? • Had there not been television in DFW you’d had another 3,000 SRO fans trying to find a place to stand while pissin’ off the Denton Fire Marshall. Duly Note: We did just that once before in 1975 with 10,700 sardines packed in the Super Pit versus ...S M U.(I'm shrinking, I'm shrinking). • I agree with Adler-- “expand now—reap the benefits later.” Experts suggest the Big 12 will not look like it does today in membership maybe sooner than later. UNT will once again be at the train station in a time of conference realignment—do we move forward or get left behind?***** A 9K seat 2’nd deck on the student side would really complete Apogee Stadium & (perhaps) give us new options. •They built Apogee with eventual plans for a 2’nd deck........ FireFightinRick showed me where the expansion would be on a pregame tour couple years back. Yes, more fish to fry plus an IPF to build but.......at least begin a study of expanding our stadium)? PERCEPTION IS (still) EVERYTHING! Some UNT Head Football Coach seeing such plans for expansion might inspire him to want to stick around a bit longer & be UNT’s version of TCU’s Coach (I ain’t going anywhere) Patterson. To all who I saw at the Tailgate, "The Game" * my extended Mean Green family a hearty—GLAD I GOT TO SEE SOME FRIENDLY FACES FROM YEARS/DECADES PAST &...GO MEAN GREEN!
  24. Fat lady hasn't sung yet but.. I think our connections & rapport with the Texas HS coaching fraternity is worse than maybe we previously thought. ➡️ I do not blame the present staff because it took years to create this vacuum & may take as long to correct it. I will question, though, the hiring of a new HS Recruiting Coordinator from Kentucky, but that is novice fan talk of which there is plenty of that on any fan forum. Still, none of this makes sense because of our location, our fabulous football venue & an upcoming Indoor Practice Facility. As we know, our school is as academically sound as some in the Big 12, but it just still bothers the hell out of me that (at present) we have had many more better recruiting classes when we had the worst college football stadium in the Southwest. But.....2 or 3 more surprises or last minute flips the next few days can still make this class the best one we've had since leaving venerable Fouts Field for fabulous Apogee Stadium. Hope springs eternal. GMG!
