The oil price crash that has hammered the US shale industry is now threatening to put the squeeze on one of America’s biggest university endowments. The University of Texas and Texas A&M University systems have amassed one of the largest college endowments in the US through their economic interest in swaths of land, just over half of which is leased to oil and gas producers. The companies hand over a share of their revenues to University Lands, which manages about 2.1m acres of territory in West Texas for the educational institutions. Over the past 10 years, the Permanent University Fund (PUF) has reaped $8.2bn from the arrangement, helping to push its assets to $24bn by the end of 2019. But as the economic upheaval unleashed by the coronavirus pandemic has sent the oil price tumbling, the universities have been forced to rip up their forecasts. The royalties the PUF will receive are expected to drop to $500m for the year ending August 2021, according to a spokeswoman for the University of Texas system. “Obviously the royalty flow is not going to be $1bn this year,” says Dale Craymer, president of the Texas Taxpayers and Research Association. “We’re probably going to see much slower growth of the corpus as a result of the oil price drop.” read more: https://www.ft.com/content/ab2f0277-1ec0-47ea-a674-9c205fa22c01

Fine’s high school coach, Matt Hennesy, is also Drummond’s coach after leaving Locust Grove for Pawhuska in 2018. “Bryce loves the new quarterback coach in North Texas,” Hennesy said. “They’ve developed a great relationship. He likes Seth and trusts my relationship with Seth. We went down to a game this year to watch Mason. And listening to Mason really excites him, too. … “Deep down I want him to go there, but I want what’s best for him. And Seth knows that. At the end of the day I gotta put what’s best for my kid, and I think North Texas is. His parents are super pumped. He’s excited. It just kind of all worked out, and the fact that I just had one there makes it kind of cool, too.” read more: https://www.tulsaworld.com/sports/high-school/several-connections-led-to-pawhuska-quarterback-bryce-drummonds-commitment-to-north-texas/article_36e80971-c7a4-54a1-85dc-f16a4d7bf131.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=user-share

BREAKING: Boise State furloughs coaching staff

Louisville to cut athletics budget by 15 percent, furlough staff Louisville athletic director Vince Tyra said his department will cut 15% from its sports budgets and furlough staff this week in further economic moves resulting from the coronavirus pandemic. Tyra said furloughs would be announced Wednesday, but he did not specify details to the University of Louisville Athletic Association (ULAA) board in a Monday video teleconference. Earlier this month, the AD announced 10% pay cuts for head coaches and senior staff, including himself, and included his forgoing $300,000 in bonuses. The department aims to trim $15 million from the 2020-21 budget to be submitted this week, and it hinted at other cost-cutting moves, including furloughs. "We regret that we have to make some of these very difficult decisions,'' Tyra told the ULAA board. "But for us, to be honest to the situation and where we are as an athletic department, we're not sitting with a large reserve, as some may be.'' I think their contract is already with ESPN+ so you may be right. They may just play the games without fans and show them online.

League sources have confirmed C-USA is looking at an abbreviated nine-game football schedule in 2020, depending on the progress of defeating the coronavirus. If the college football season is able to open on time, schools will be permitted to play their regularly scheduled 12-game slate. read more: https://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/chuck-landon-c-usa-finally-goes-into-cost-cutting-mode/article_0f2a0e97-bce8-5931-aa16-6b0f955242e2.html
