Will Smith (Knee) was not on the bench. Jerome Rogers was in uniform but did not play. No official explanation, but his wrist and thumb were thoroughly taped. Len Hopkins played, but seemed to be a step or two slower than ususal, and not quite the player he was last year. Marqus Mitchell (6-0) showed some amazing leaping ability, while doing most of his scoring in the lane.

It looks as though Tulsa was interested in Sturns. Below is from a Tulsa Recruiting site: Sturns is a good prospect From reports I have heard it looks as if we will turn our attention to Sturns and or Franklyn...Sturns sounds like a good scorer and Franklyn is a great ahtlete....Coley, Glenn type....If we get Sturns then maybe Langford will follow him. I believe they play on the same team.....Chris what have you heard? __________________ failure courts success-Roy McAvoy (Tin Cup) __________________ Chris Harmon Editor - Hurricane Alert Newsletter TU Beat Reporter - Tulsa SportsWeb Recruiting Analyst - PrepRecruiting.com Report this post to a moderator | IP: Logged 11-03-2003 05:56 PM Tulsa teen Position Coach Registered: Oct 2002 Location: Enid, Oklahoma Posts: 900 quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally posted by jed_d_tai Sturns is being under-recruited, that's for sure. Things could change, but I wouldn't count on him (or Langford) getting too interested. Franklin is a possibility though. Reminds me I need to call him. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- __________________ Bill Lowery Recruiting Analyst Sooner State Recruiting Report this post to a moderator | IP: Logged 11-03-2003 06:17 PM Canefan Senior Registered: Oct 2002 Location: Broken Arrow Posts: 487 I think that speaks volumes when a player shys away when we have certain players signed. Below is a post from Texas Hoops message board: TULSAFAN user profile Post #54 Dissappointed about Sturns choosing North Texas Reply -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I dissappointed that he choose North Texas. I thought he would have waited until Spring. I really think he's got a lot of upside potential. Posted on 11/10 4:08 PM | IP: Logged -

If my memory is correct, Michael Sturns played for Arlington Oak Ridge with Ron Harris before transferring to North Crowley last year. Help, Old-Timer. If he is who I think he is, Sturns was considered one of the top Sophs in the state two years ago. I didn't get to see him play for North Crowley. Even after missing most of the year with injuries, he showed enough to be rated #46 Senior in Texas. At Oak Ridge when he was a Soph, against Man Defense, they used to spread the court so he could go one-on-one. He could be a point or a wing guard. -
He went through all the drills and scrimmages at full speed. He doesn't appear to be suffering from any recent injury.

Hopkins was in uniform, went through the warm-up drills and stretching exercises but did not play. He did not limp or show any signs of being injured. If he were seriously injured, we would have been told. Starting lineup: Point guard....Jerome Rogers Wing guard.....Marqus Mitchell Wing Forward..Mike Jones Post................Will Smith Post................Mike DeGrate The four Sophs, Barnett, Harris, Thomas and Roniger, usually came into the game at the same time. There was no slowdown in production from these guys. They are not busts. When Rogers was not in the game, Roniger or Mitchell played point guard. Has UNT ever had a 6-7 wing player? I can't remember one. Mike Jones has a broad range of skills. Ty Thomas looked just like Red Mangrum while taking two charging fouls in the first half.

Thanks for posting UNT Still. I don't trust my memory either, but I also believe Men's Gym was known as the snake pit way before the Drake game. A few years ago I read the DRC stories on the NT-Drake game on microfilm at the Denton County Library. The Drake coach was not complaining about the noise as much as he was the behaviour of NT fans. I distinctly remember him saying the fans were the worst in the nation. At the next game some fans proudly held a banner proclaiming themselves to be "The worst of the worst". Fan behaviour was terrible, although it seemed like fun at the time. Cups of ice were often thrown at the refs, and no one ever pointed at the guilty parties. I remember rubber snakes being thrown at the opposing team when they came out for warm-ups. Rubber Snakes also were thrown at the Refs. I don't recall anyone ever assaulting a ref or an opposing player, but I do remember the refs and the visiting teams sprinting to the dressing rooms when the final gun was fired. Yes, halftime and end of game were announced by firing a blank pistol. The crowd noise was so loud the horn could not be heard.

I don't think there is anything seriously wrong with Hopkins. There were no casts, slings or even any wraps or tape on his body.

Marqus Mitchell is listed on some JUCO top 100 lists. Michael Jones was MVP runnerup for his JUCO league. It looks like NT is getting four possible starters. Michael Johnson

Lawrence Roberts and John Lucas are both very good players. -
The Lady Eagles signed Endurance Wali, a 5-8 Guard from S. Grand Prairie HS, to a letter of intent to play for UNT. Endurance averaged 17.7 ppg and was a member of the Dallas Morning News all area 1st team. Endurance has been chosen to play for Texas in the 2003 Oil Bowl girls BB game.

The Dallas News' story about the proposed new rules said the wider lane would reduce the need for brute strength in post players because establishing post position would not be as important. Also, the wider lane would increase the value of a quick post player who could cut through the wider lane. This might be made to order for post players such as Will Smith, Mike DeGrate and Ron Harris. All rank higher in quickness than size and strength. New players Mike Jones and Shawon Johnson also could benefit from the new proposed rule.

The real reason he will be fired

I like the lane and the 3-point line where they are now. I would prefer a return to the 45-second clock instead of 35 seconds. I think the refs should call the games a little tighter. When one player pushes, elbows, or forearms another it should always be a foul. Fouls should be called for moving screens. I would like to see an automatic flagrant foul called when someone from behind, with no chance to stop a layup or dunk, hammers the shooter. Also flagrant fouls should be called when someone hammers the shooter immediately after he releases the ball.

NT walk on BB guard to transfer..Boxell going Lubb
Buford_Julep replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Basketball
He could run the offense as well as anyone, but does not have the speed and quickness to defend the other team's point guard. Lacks the size to be a 2 guard. -
Issac Hines, of Dallas Molina and Collin Co JC, is ranked #81 on this list. Hines was right there with Deron Williams and Bryan Hopkins as the top point guard in the Metroplex two years ago. He was named MVP of the Dallas World Games ahead of Kansas' Keith Langford. If Marqus Mitchell at #43 is truly better than Issac Hines, there won't be any complaints about his ability.

Congrats Lance on winning a scholarship. -
Below is the story Cooley read. The Mean green are in good company. Hawthorne also turned down WAC regular season Champ Fresno State, a 20-game winner last season. PRAIRIE VIEW, TEX - The Prairie View A&M University Panther basketball program has signed three high school prepsters to NCAA National Letters of Intent on the first day of the spring signing period. The list of new Panthers include Phillip Hawthorne, Clyde Pride and Lonnie Wyche. Hawthorne, a 6-4, 190-pound small forward from Alief Hastings High School in Houston, earned second team Class 5A All-State honors and was selected to the Region III-5A first team by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC). He also earned a spot on the District 19-5A first team, averaging 13 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game. Hawthorne selected Prairie View over Fresno State, North Texas, Southwest Texas State and Stephen F. Austin.

Len Hopkins: 1997-98: One of top High School Sophs in the state. 1998-99: Missed Jr season due to operation on leg. 1999-00: Missed Sr season due to infection in the same leg. 2000-01: Freshman at NT. Voluntarily red shirted. 2001-02: Played 28 games. 2002-03: Played 9 games. Asked for Med red shirt. Probably won't get it because he played too many games. Scott Roniger also played 9 games and has also requested a med red shirt year.

If either team plays like they did Saturday, they will win by 25 points. Kansas has the experience. Kansas by 12.

Lance Boxell was left off the returning walk-on list. As far as I know he will be back next season.
-
I do not know for sure. Many times it has been posted here that he will be eligible only for next Spring. It seems that I remember reading in the DRC he had next Spring and all of the next season, but I could be wrong.
