08/27/2002 For release: Regents rename UNT Administration Building in honor of Alfred F. and Johanna H. Hurley DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Last weekend, at Dr. Alfred F. Hurley's final University of North Texas System Board of Regents meeting as system chancellor, the regents honored him and his wife, Johanna, by renaming the university Administration Building in their honor. Hurley, who became the system's first full-time chancellor in October 2000 and prior to that held the university presidency longer than any other chief executive in UNT's history, announced plans in January to leave the chancellorship at the end of the 2001-2002 academic year. When he steps down on Aug. 31, Hurley, 73, will have served as the UNT System's chief executive officer for more than 20 years. Hurley joined the university as vice president for administrative affairs on September 1, 1980. Less than 17 months after his arrival, in February 1982, he became UNT's 12th president and the second chancellor of the informal UNT System. Many credit Hurley as a major factor in the rise of the university and the system to educational leadership in the North Texas region, but Hurley always shared the credit for the amazing progress during his presidency and chancellorship. He acknowledges Mrs. Hurley as his full-time partner in fulfilling the responsibilities of his offices with the university and the system. "It is fitting that the Administration Building, which stands at the center of the UNT campus and since 1956 has symbolized the seat of administrative leadership, should be named for Dr. and Mrs. Hurley," said UNT Board of Regents Chairman Bobby Ray. "The building overlooks a campus benefiting from nearly $200 million raised in two capital campaigns and transformed by more than $260 million in construction and renovation to expand and update its facilities during Dr. Hurley's tenure. Accordingly, renaming the building the ‘Alfred F. and Johanna H. Hurley Administration Building' will be a lasting symbol of the Hurleys' accomplishments on behalf of the university and the system," Ray said. In other action, the regents took steps to keep Hurley in the university and system communities by appointing him chancellor, emeritus, of the UNT System and president, emeritus, of the university. In 1981, the regents approved his appointment as professor of history, with tenure. A nationally recognized military historian, Hurley is the author of the first scholarly biography of General "Billy" Mitchell and a contributor to other works on the history of air power. During his 30-year career in the U.S. Air Force, he headed the History Department at the Air Force Academy from 1966‑1980 and served as chairman of its Humanities Division. He also led the development of the Air Force Academy Symposia in Military History; won a Guggenheim Fellowship in the Humanities in 1971-72; held an appointment as a Fellow in the Eisenhower Institute of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. in 1976‑77; and often lectured at the National Army and Navy War Colleges as well as various Air Force service schools between 1966 and 1980.

Jim, where did you get that figure of 30,265 from? I couldn't find an article about it. I think 30K is a milestone to celebrate. It's hard to deny that any enrollment growth will eventually lead to more growth for athletics and attendance!!

Someone posted Baylor will come to Denton next season, along with Smu and Indiana...mucho better home schedule next year! I agree about trying to get some SLC teams to Denton, but as someone else pointed out, 100 teams wanted to play us last year, but once other coaches realize what good progress is being made they hesitate to come.

2002-03 Men's Basketball Schedule

The DMN schedule had more game times on it...SWMoSt game is at 7pm, and Indiana game is at 1pm. A fine fan road trip is possible by going to the BB opener Friday, Nov.22 at 7pm in Springfield, Mo. Then going early the next morning to M'boro, Tenn. for the 2pm football game between NT vs. MTSU.

The new web site has the correct Friday date/time for the alum soccer game on the front page but not the team-schedule page. It also makes reference to the Mean Green Soccer Complex. Where is this, have they moved the field from last year? New official UNT Athletics web site

I think he's free game again from junior college. We sent a couple to Kansas to JC and Tech signed one (Jamal Brown?). I think we just signed a Waco JC kid that Baylor wanted didn't we?

I'm sure RV had a good talk with her about this issue, and I'm sure he's satisfied it's settled and she's ready for another chance. Her record says she can coach. We know as fans that emotions sometimes get the best of us.

I believe the home/home with Oklahoma St. and NT was for football. We sent them a contract for that and they hadn't signed it yet..per RV a couple months ago. They don't want to play at Fouts (can't blame them).

He's talking about getting Tech at home on Feb.24 and the game being on ESPN's Big Monday telecast...he posts Tech's schedule to show @Oklahoma State on it (feb.24)....

OSU? That looks like Texas Tech's schedule. I think since Tech is already visiting TCU (metroplex), that may have been one reason they didn't schedule us. And since they played at SMU last season, maybe we can get them here next year. Anyway, I'm cheering for anyone who plays against them! Wreck Tech!!

I think July and August is probably the busiest time of year in the athletic department. They have to prepare the media guide and press info, send out ticket brochures and renewal mailings, coordinate fall team travel and finish schedules, find advertising $$, prep the facilities, get ready for a new school year for athletes, etc., etc. Still with all that said, yes, communication with fans must remain a priority. They must dedicate a web-master who has the time available to keep the site current and informative. And with volunteers available, those offers must be used. As far as RV burning out, I don't think so yet. Fall offers a new start and optomism for staff, players, and fans alike. RV has given us the plans and goals we've wanted, all we have to do now is show up at games and bring friends and donate $$. There are many places the grass is greener, we just have to show we are going in that direction too.

I think culture and training is creating a different kind of athlete, male and female. In the early 1980's college football linemen averaged 6-2, 240-250lbs and anyone around 300 was just fat, not in shape. Today 300lb in-shape linemen are common, and they are taller by a couple inches too. Women athletes also have progressed greatly in the last couple decades. I imagine today's college women soccer players could run circles around the ones from the 70's and 80's. Women 10 years from now will be even more athletic.

I think much of the increase is not in tuition, but fees that go along with tuition. I believe tuition is the same at all Texas state schools? I heard last spring UT and A$M were going to raise fees like $300/course to fund facilities and building maintenance. I know students at UT protested the fee, saying it was the state's job and $$ to maintain the buildings.

It makes no sense for the state to financially support two competing state universities in the same town. I think you'll see, as funding becomes tighter, that duplication of university departments 3 miles across town are a waste. I understand no TWU alum wants to lose it's school's identity, but the reality is that a "women's" university is outdated and the faculty and facilities could become part of something so much greater than it is now. A merger would no-doubt create the third flagship university in the state. The combined campuses could easily hold 50,000 students and re-assigned buildings could bring specialization that does not currently exist.

Welcome to the board! NT has a very good club baseball team, but has not had varsity baseball since it's Southland Conference days (it was a conference requirement to have baseball back then). The SBC is an excellent baseball conference and I too would someday like to see varsity baseball again. I think $$, facilities, and Title IX will keep it from happeneing anytime soon. It's very expensive to build a field then you'd have to balance it with another women's sport to meet Title IX requirements. Women's softball will be added next in 2004 as a varsity sport to help equal out schlorships for Title IX for the sports we already have. I think the requirement for total number of men's "team" sports was not included in the new 1-A criteria like it was orginally suggested; that would have caused NT to need to add another men's team sport (possibly baseball).
