I mean he could enroll in summer school and take the classes but those hours can not be used to help in his eligibility. It is the new rule NCAA put in place last year. He is not working out with the guys this summer during 7 on 7 drills. I don't understand because from what Zach tells me they have plenty of resouces at their disposal to insure they pass their classes! It is just a matter of not giving a crap or thinking someone will clean up my mess for me! ............................................................. ............................................................. This makes too many reports to not think there is something to it. But why would coaches give Byerly the majority of reps in spring, and DD say he was happy with our roster qbs and wouldn't sign a JUCO qb, then name Joey the starter in May if they knew he was borderline with grades? How could they not know his class status during the semester, or is it a total secret until the last final is taken as to how a person is progressing? How does a player go from starter to can't participate in a 2 month period and nobody knew it was coming?

The poster is labeled as "very rare" and from 1980 so maybe they have stopped using the Mean Green phrase now. I've heard them referred to as their real nickname "49ers" in TV games several times but never knew they used Mean Green at one time as an extra name. I agree we should copyright it, but can a nickname be copyrighted or just the font? Can Longhorns, Mustangs, Sooners, etc. be copyrighted?

The Outlaws play at the former Liberty Christian baseball field, on Bonnie Brae, directly across from the new AC football practice fields. This will become the new NT softball field after the Outlaw's season and some modifications.

I wonder what it would take to really increase our MGC member numbers? People value different perks for membership. Some feel they owe the school, some do it for social reasons, some because their friends are members or peer pressure, and some like the cool membership shirts or member decals many programs offer. I originally joined to get up close stadium parking and because I wanted someday to see a new stadium on campus. If we only have 300 members now at the $250 or higher level we are behind many programs. Is it communication that isn't getting the message out, or the use of the funds confusing people. Would more join/give if the money went to a specific designated fund, like a specific Stadium Fund? Should we have a $50 or $100 level of membership just to get people involved then try to get them to move up in level later? I don't know but 300 members won't cut it.

NT once had a 400+ lb lineman about 10 years ago. Not a starter, very slow, but huge.

I think it was a spring practice injury or maybe a track injury, nothing major as I recall.

Harris poll replaces Associated Press rankings in BCS standings By Eric Ransom, Daily Texan July 12, 2005 (U-WIRE) AUSTIN, Texas -- Football fans will have to check the latest Harris poll for the Bowl Championship Series rankings this season. The committee announced on Monday that Harris Interactive is forming the newest poll for the BCS standings. The Harris poll will replace The Associated Press poll this season after the company, along with ESPN, pulled its poll from the calculations. The BCS standings have attempted calculating the national champion since 1998, and the committee hopes the Harris poll's scientific method will work for football. "We are moving forward with essentially the same components of the BCS standings a year ago," BCS coordinator and Big 12 Commissioner Kevin Weiberg said in a conference call from Dallas. The BCS standings will be computed like last year, between the mixed poll, the coaches poll and the computer rankings. Over 300 invitations were sent out in June to find voters for the Harris poll. The Harris group is aiming for 114 voting members and currently has over 80 spots filled in the same mold as the AP poll. "There's no ideal voter, but the nominees were former players, coaches, administrators and members of the media as a legacy from the AP poll," Harris Interactive Project Director Eric Stone said. The names of the voting members will be released before the season starts, and the final ballot of each voting member will be released with the final BCS standings in December. Members will be allowed to reveal their ballots weekly if they choose. The Associated Press will continue its poll and will name a national champion, continuing the chance of a split national champion. The new Harris poll will not include a preseason ranking. The first poll will be released in late September while the first BCS rankings will be released on Oct. 17. BCS conferences helped choose 300 voter nominees; polls will have 114 members. Voters will have names released, with the first poll out on Sept. 25. The voters' final poll will be released to the public.

Some don't even know it exists -- the media guide. It's the Bible of historical and statistical information. A glossy time capsule, filled with just about everything anyone would dream of knowing about an athletic program. Sports information departments across the country spend their summers researching, compiling and polishing what become their babies -- the finished media guides, bound and shipped across the country to promote athletic teams. But with a new NCAA ruling that placed a 208-page maximum on school media guides, their babies will be a bit smaller, much smaller for a school like Michigan. The Wolverine football media guide was formerly a 416-page encyclopedia with everything from bowl-game history to Heisman Trophy winners. Now, all that will have to fit in half the space. The cut wasn't so drastic for Northern Illinois Sports Information Director Mike Korcek, but his downsize from 2004's 256-page guide to this year's 208 wasn't an easy task. "It's like staying up all night to do a 36-page term paper, and then finding out in the morning that you have to trim it to 18," said Korcek of the 48-page cut. "We're responsible for the history of the whole football program. It's hard to cut that many pages out." Supporters of the NCAA rule hope that by placing the restriction on the guides, lower-income programs won't have to compete with schools that have higher athletic budgets. Korcek disagreed. The 21-year sports information boss estimated the page cut would save NIU $5,000-$6,000. "That's not even half a scholarship -- what did they do?" Korcek said. "I think they're missing the boat here. Believe me, I'm a taxpayer, but in the scope of the NCAA, $5,000 is not a lot of money." Last season, NIU distributed approximately 3,700 media guides, and will cut back to 3,600 for the fall. Historical football powerhouses like Notre Dame and Michigan send out more than 30,000. Korcek argued that the cut hurts mid-level schools like NIU the most. A shorter media guide means less publicity to national-level sports media, he said. "The No. 1 promotional piece for a school is not the schedule card, it's the media guide," Korcek said. "How did Turner the Burner hot sauce get to ESPN? We sent it to them." Most frustrating to SIDs across the country who have spent the spring and summer frantically debating which of their pages will see the shredder is that the NCAA did not include SIDs in its decision to cut pages. "Is a 614-page media guide obscene? There's no doubt in my mind, I understand that," Korcek said. "Our media guide takes a lot of work and effort, and when someone on the other side of the country decides, 'We're going to do this,' it hurts us."

Many USF fans booing idea of playing downtown By John Calkins, The Oracle July 11, 2005 (U-WIRE) TAMPA, Fla. -- With a slew of marquee college basketball teams scheduled to visit USF, the Bulls could find themselves renting space downtown this season. According to The Tampa Tribune, officials from the St. Pete Times Forum and USF are discussing the possibility of moving men's basketball games from the Sun Dome to the Forum. Money and logistics have been the main focus of the discussions so far. But how do the fans feel? Brad Meyer, a long-time fan and founder of two popular Bulls fan sites, believes the Bulls belong on campus. "I think it's a mistake to get these great teams on our court and move them somewhere else," said Meyer, the founder of thebullspen.com and southfloridabulls.com. "I think we just need to stay at home." Meyer isn't alone. On the thebullspen.com, a site that allows users to post comments on a variety of USF-related issues, the vast majority of postings disapproved of the idea. Scheduled to visit Tampa this season are some of the nation's top teams. Big East opponents like UConn, West Virginia and St. John's are coming, and a non-conference game against Michigan is tentatively planned to be held downtown. Meyer, like a lot of fans, is worried that off-campus games will become neutralized. "It would definitely take away the home-court advantage," he said. Forum president Ron Campbell told the Tribune that he would like the Forum to host as many games as possible and USF Athletic Director Doug Woolard has acknowledged the possibility of playing downtown. Neither Campbell nor Woolard could be reached for comment. Fans have raised the question of whether the 20,500-seat Forum would benefit the University financially because, in the past, USF has had trouble selling out the 10,411-seat Sun Dome. Also, it remains unclear how parking, concessions and ticket revenue will be divided between USF and the Forum. "A lot of us are concerned about that," Meyer said. "I'd like to see what the business case would be." While most fans are opposed to moving the games from the Sun Dome, supporters do exist. They argue that moving downtown will increase fan base and give USF more exposure as it enters the Big East. Meyer doesn't think USF shouldn't someday use a bigger venue, but stresses that doing so now is premature. "I think we'd be better suited waiting until we're bringing 7-, 8-, 9-, 10,000 into the Sun Dome, and then use a larger venue for the showcase games," he said. "That way it's filled with USF fans and not the other school. "Right now I just don't see a whole lot of benefit."

If we don't know if there is a real Stadium Fund or not, then I doubt Joe-Million-Dollar-Hidden-In-Shoebox-Fan knows about it either. Why keep it a secret?

Chevrie takes over UNT women's squad 07:48 AM CDT on Thursday, July 7, 2005 Amber Chevrie, a former Hardin-Simmons University standout and golf pro, has been hired to coach the North Texas women’s golf team. Chevrie will replace Cindi Padgett, who left UNT to pursue other interests. UNT director of golf and head men’s coach Jim Bob Jackson announced the change on Wednesday. “I’m excited about her coming to coach here,†Jackson said. “She is going to be a real asset to the program and continue the success that coach Padgett has built over the past few years. Being a golf professional for the last six years, she will be able to come in and teach a lot of different things to our players.†Chevrie lettered at HSU from 1995-99 and was an All-American Southwest Conference selection. She went on to work as a golf professional at Abilene Country Club and Fairway Oaks Country Club. Chevrie spent the 2005 season working in the Tight Lies Tour’s operations department. Chevrie will take over a team that returns eight letter winners after finishing eighth out of 10 teams in the 2005 Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
