Lewis the opportunity he had been hoping for last week. The wide receiver/defensive back from Waco Robinson was being recruited by North Texas and Rice, along with Division II schools Tarleton State and West Texas A&M, but had not received a scholarship offer. That changed when Jason Martinson of Birdville backed out of his commitment to UNT to accept a scholarship offer from Texas State, which wanted him to play both football and baseball. UNT quickly offered its open scholarship to Lewis (6-1, 185). Lewis was a Class 3A all-state selection at defensive back but was recruited by UNT as a wide receiver. Oral commitments are non-binding. The first day recruits can sign national letters of intent is Wednesday. “North Texas contacted me later on,” Lewis said. “They offered me on Thursday after another receiver [Martinson] decommitted. The coaches at North Texas talked to my coaches and told them what the situation was.” The Waco Tribune-Herald rates Lewis No. 21 on its list of the top 25 recruits in Central Texas. He might also be one of the most versatile. Lewis was an All-District 17-3A selection as a defensive back, wide receiver and return specialist. Lewis is looking forward to focusing his attention on developing as a wide receiver at UNT, but said he is willing to play defensive back if that is where he could contribute. UNT has seven wide receivers in its recruiting class and is also loaded with young defensive backs. All four cornerbacks on UNT’s depth chart last season were either freshmen or sophomores. “I can’t wait to get down there and play in coach Dodge’s offense, especially with the coaching staff they have now.” Lewis said. While Lewis is expected to play wide receiver at UNT, he made his mark in high school as a defensive back. As a senior, Lewis intercepted six passes and recorded 72 tackles. What does Stoops think of those OU internet morons? He is closing practice to them so they can't critique the new QBs..... February 2, 2007 OU closing ranks this spring Normally, spring football doesn't rate very high on my radar. But this is an interesting decision from the Oklahoma camp. Turns out coach Bob Stoops has decided to close most spring practices to the public and media. The only chance fans have to see their Sooners in a relaxed setting will (possibly) be scrimmages on March 14 and 31 and, of course, the spring game on April 7. That will be televised by ESPN, by the way. Now, I heard that Stoops was considering this for some time, so the actual announcement wasn't that big a surprise. But does the average OU fan have a problem with Stoops' decision? If you think about it, OU will have a major quarterback battle coming with three players who essentially have no Division I-A experience. I can see Stoops' thinking; let's let them actually learn the plays before the media/public starts criticizing them. I've got no problem with that. Why let Internet chatterheads tear these guys apart long before the games actually count? But spring football is relaxed and -- for die hards -- fun. Fans who come to spring football and August two-a-days may not be able to afford game tickets. It's as close to the Sooners they can get. Cut those people out, and you're cutting out the heart and soul of your fan base.

That quote was taken a little out of context. More like: "it would be very difficult to win at North Texas....without fencing around your practice fields", and other suggestions for facility and department improvements, such as fewer money games, etc. He did not say it solely as quoted. Stallings is a class guy and was very informative at that "State of NT Athletics" meeting hosted by Dr. Pohl. This was right before RV was hired as AD. Also just before Trilli was fired as basketball coach by Dr. Pohl when Stallings noted us playing a non-scholarship program and losing! Stallings was hired to report what he saw that North Texas needed to change to be successful, including more donations and supporters; and he was correct on many points.

Ok, rocket scientist, let's use your criteria and go the other way. First, I discount any win over a non-D-1 school (-3 wins). Next, take away five wins by a total of 9 points = 6-12 record. I don't agree with your opinion either

North Texas loses Martinson North Texas has apparently lost Birdville wide receiver Jason Martinson from its recruiting class. Martinson told Rivals.com late Wednesday night that he has backed out of his commitment to UNT to play for Texas State. Martinson based his decision partly on the opportunity he would have to play both football and baseball for the Bobcats. "I just wanted to keep playing baseball and North Texas didn't have that," Martinson told Rivals.com. "They kept talking like they might start one up at UNT, but I didn't know if that was going to happen." If UNT could afford to lose a recruit, it would be a wide receiver. UNT has five other high school wide receivers committed to join its 2007 recruiting class, plus Rice transfer Evan Fentriss, who will sit out the upcoming season to fulfill NCAA rules. The part about DD talking a player out of a Big 10 offer to come to UNT. Granted, Gilmore is a quality player and recruit, but Dodge in his first month ever recruiting is getting far more kids to change to UNT from offers of larger programs than DD ever did.

No, detrimental is to keep a coach who can't attract fan$. The last home game had only 1300 fans to see a 14-7 team. That tells me the fans aren't buying what JJ is selling.
