  1. I walked from the same ditch at the kickoff cookout last Fall. Sounds like we need more parking over there with all these Athletic type events going on. If we only had a stadium close by that had some parking with it......humm.......
  2. HEADLINES Tiger NCAA Tournament First/Second Rounds Ticket Policy Announced Men's Basketball NCAA Seeding Quotes Memphis is No. 2 Seed in New Orleans March 11, 2007 The University of Memphis Tiger basketball team, ranked No. 5 in both national polls, earned a No. 2 seed in the 2007 NCAA Tournament and opens first round play Friday, Mar. 16 in New Orleans, La. Game time will be determined later by the NCAA and CBS Sports. The No. 2 seed is the first since 1985. In that tournament, Memphis used the No. 2 seed to advance to the NCAA Final Four in Lexington. The Tigers were also a No. 2 seed in the 1982 NCAA Tournament. Last year, the Tigers earned the program's first No. 1 seed and advanced to the NCAA Oakland Regional final (Elite Eight). Memphis (30-3) will play No. 15 seed North Texas (23-10). The Tigers are 15-6 all-time against the Mean Green. The last meeting between the two schools came in Memphis with the Tigers winning 101-79 during the 1983-84 season. Memphis has won the last four meetings and 10 of the last 11 games against North Texas. North Texas head coach Johnny Jones coached for three seasons at Memphis, including two seasons as associate head coach and one as the Tigers' interim head coach during the 1999-2000 season. The Tigers open play in New Orleans, but are in the San Antonio Regional. Memphis' New Orleans bracket also includes No. 7 seed Nevada (28-4) and No. 10 seed Creighton (22-10). The first-round winners will meet in Sunday's second round. The 2006-07 Tigers won the Conference USA regular season and tournament titles for a second-straight season. Memphis is the first team in Conference USA history to have a 16-0 regular season record and follow that with a C-USA Tournament title. The Tigers also won 30 games for a second-consecutive season, which is a first in the program's history. Additional information, including ticket information, will be posted as soon as it becomes available.
  3. The times are messed up somehow. They show Creighton and Nevada playing at 1:50 pm (12:50pm CST) in New Orleans; that's not going to happen if we start at 11:30 am CST.

  5. The NTSU Flying Worm helmets were the greatest of all time!
  6. That would be Coach Brence responsible for that!
  7. reposted from the M&G board: Subject: Jones Cuts The Nets There are times when one must seize the moment and enjoy it to the hilt. Winning a conference basketball tournament and claiming an NCAA tournament berth is such an occasion. So it was with former LSU player and assistant coach Johnny Jones, whose University of North Texas basketball team defeated Arkansas State to claim the Sun Belt Conference tournament in Lafayette on Tuesday. “When I looked up in the stands and saw my 78-year-old mom (Delorise) and the look on her face ... and the excitement of coach (Dale) Brown, I can’t tell you how great it made me feel,” said Jones, who prepped at DeRidder High School before getting his taste of NCAA playoff action several times as a player and as an assistant coach. As a player, he reached the 1981 Final Four and, as an assistant coach, the 1986 Final Four. “I couldn’t have picked a better place for us to win, in Lafayette, in front of family and friends who were responsible for me being in the position we are in,” he said. “Coach Brown, my parents, loved ones, my wife (the former Kelli Vincent of Baton Rouge), my children and my friends were there. “I’m just glad they were able to share in the excitement of what our team had accomplished.” Today, Jones and the players will await word on who they play and where. It won’t matter. They’re all just happy to be in that position. You see, people in Denton, Texas, aren’t too familiar with big-time, winning basketball. Not only did Jones’ team set a single-season victory mark with their 23rd triumph, Jones — in only his sixth season — has become the all-time winningest coach at the school. The last time North Texas won as many as 20 games was in 1978 — while Jones was running the floor at DeRidder High School. Jones’ teams have posted marks of 15-14, 7-21, 13-15, 14-14, 14-14 and, this season, 23-10. Jones admits he has borrowed a chapter or two from Brown, including a few motivational ploys. “When we were getting ready to leave our last practice, I pulled out a ladder and put it beneath the goal,” said Brown. “I told them I wanted them to practice cutting the net just the way we were going to do when we won the tournament.” Although it was a great idea, it still didn’t feel the same as the real thing. “I didn’t want them to get up there and not know what they were doing. They hadn’t cut nets down prior to me coming here,” he said. “I wanted to put in their minds and give them a vision. “Man, it was wonderful to see them get up to snip nets just like we had practiced prior to leaving to go to Lafayette.” But, really, North Texas doesn’t stand much of a chance, does it? Jones reminds he was a graduate assistant on the Tigers’ 1985-86 team. Anything is possible if everyone puts their minds to it. Don’t think he doesn’t keep reminding his players what can be accomplished. “That was unbelievable in ’85-86. I told them recently after we lost a couple on last-second shots, that I could look back and see John Williams throwing an in-bound pass that Nikita Wilson let go out and Georgia tossed it in to beat us — but we came back and went to the Final Four,” said Jones. Jones quickly assured this writer he wasn’t thinking of Final Four — just “the next game.” I reminded him he was spouting coach talk. “My biggest thing is just to make sure we play as well as possible,” he said. “Take care of that. I’m not sure what the score will be, but we will play as hard as we possibly can. We will leave it all on the floor.” North Texas has been the third-leading scoring team in the Sun Belt and ranks in the top 30 of the county at 78 points per game. There’ll be a lot more eyes than just those in Texas upon Jones and his team when the playoffs start this week. (Sidenote: JJ has the third most wins behind Pete Shands and the great Bill Blakeley)
  8. Videos of recruits were already shown on signing day and available on this page: http://www.meangreensports.com/ViewArticle...p;ATCLID=787592 Spring practice starts either March 12 or 13 this coming week. Last year spring practice was over with the green/white scrimmage on March 9 !!
  9. Stars for a week at UNT Just spoke with UNT basketball media guy Stephen Howard. Boy, has it been insane since Tuesday night. In about 72 hours, UNT has filled or booked more media requests than in the entire regular season. Coach Johnny Jones has done two Sirius Satellite Radio shows, one hosted by former UNLV/Fresno State coach Jerry Tarkanian. The list of sudden suitors for Jones and his players include both Dallas sports stations; local TV; Rivals.com radio; a sports station based in Plano; CBS Evening News for a piece on UNT player and Iraq War veteran Rich Young, radio in Austin, San Antonio, Seattle, Lawrence, Kan. (for center and Lawrence native Keith Wooden) and more. "It's been unbelievable," Howard said. "All of a sudden, people [in the media] are my best friend. We're trying to accomodate everybody." Fox Sports wants to fly Jones to Chicago on Monday for the Tim Brando Show, and Channel 52 in Dallas sent a limo on Thursday night for Jones and guard Calvin Watson. Jones is scheduled to be on with Babe Laufenberg on CBS/Channel 11 on Sunday after the selection show. Howard said Young, 26, is having to be the most patient, because EVERYONE wants to talk to him about his military service. Around the Christmas holidays, Star-Telegram writer Don Bowman was the first to interview Young about his compelling story, and he's the most unassuming leader type you'll ever meet. With the Sun Belt tourney wrapping up so early, UNT has time to enjoy a little love. --Troy Phillips
  10. That media request article is interesting; a lot of NT media exposure since Dodge signed to now.
  11. Vito actually had quotes from RV in this article. I am now duly impressed, I knew you could do it. Good job, keep it up!
  12. Yes, very sad situation back then. Info about him in the spring 2001 North Texan on-line version. Some other interesting events/articles are in there too: http://www.unt.edu/northtexan/archives/p01/untnews.htm
  13. uT won by 5, Tech lost by 20+ , TA$MCC won by 20, and Nevada lost.
  14. A play-in game implies that you don't belong, that you have to prove your worth in an extra (side show) game. To be a 16th seed says we are worthy, even if only a lower seed, but one of only 64 in the Tourney! No play-in!
  15. Free videos on the official site. Very nice if you haven't seen them: http://www.meangreensports.com/ViewArticle...p;ATCLID=815765
  16. If we HAVE to have wording on the helmets, why not put Mean Green on them for a change, and North Texas back on the jerseys? Of course, a logo would be BETTER on the helmets!! Anyone still have the link to the white helmets with the new logo that were done earlier this year? I can't believe we're even thinking about white helmets; save us.
  17. Yes, I was going to post that also about SC, plus the school gets paid to wear them, are we?: NOTES, QUOTES —Auburn, Maryland and Texas Tech have all been pleased with their relationship with Under Armour. Now South Carolina has agreed to a multi-year apparel deal to outfit the Gamecocks. While coach Steve Spurrier would not reveal the exact numbers involved, he did say the amount would "flabbergast" fans compared to the school's deal with Russell for $300,000. "I think our fans are really going to like the uniform. We're going to add a little pizzazz to our uniform," Spurrier said. "We're still going to have the same colors, but it's going to be a little bit sharper (and) flashier." As far as white helmets and North Texas again on them I am not crazy about either of those decisions. I'll reserve judgement until I see them but I was really hoping to drop the school name thing from the helmets and add the new logo this year. Even SLC has a logo on the helmet!
  18. ULL is an AWAY game and the official site looks like it has now been changed to show that.
  19. Hank mentioned on the radio that there would be a watching-party on selection Sunday somewhere on campus with the team. Watch for details.
  20. Emmitt got several seconds of air time on ESPN2 during the game.
  21. From google: http://www.nationalchamps.net/2005/sub/pic...bazaldua_sm.jpg **well, link doesn't work, but there is a pic of him kicking if you google his name**
  22. blah....tastes like chicken, bad chicken. JJ forgive me for doubting.
  23. NT will probably be a 15 or 16 seed facing a 1 or 2 seed. Who do you want to see us play out of the Top 8? 1 Ohio State 2 Kansas 3 Wisconsin 4 UCLA 5 Memphis 6 Florida 7 Texas A&M 8 North Carolina I'd prefer either A$M for some in-state action, or historical programs UCLA or Kansas.
  24. Sounds like it might be a good time for a Basketball PodCast? Maybe a recap to the season so far, talk about additions/losses of players for next year, and the upcoming trip to the DANCE!!
