Unt Lands Another Ol, Transfer Qb On The Way
Censored by Laurie replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
This is exactly what I was thinking. Add to that there is mention of him considering walking on should clue you in that he may not be an impact player. There is nothing wrong with depth at QB...I just wouldn't expect him to come in her and be our QB savior. -

Tulsa Board - U N T Recruiting
Censored by Laurie replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
TCU got on the map under Franchione...but began to excel under Patterson. Boise gained respectability under Dan Hawkins...but won a BCS bowl game under Chris Peterson. There is a better than zero chance that once mack Brown retires, Dodge will strongly be considered for the job...we should be so fortunate. If UT comes calling it means Dodge has built our program to a level of respectability we have never achieved. I doubt highly Dodge will have a Paterno-like run in Denton. He has ambition like any other coach, but hopefully he will instal a system that will recruit top players just as much as a coach. -
Tulsa Board - U N T Recruiting
Censored by Laurie replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Rivalries have been brought up in several other posts...and I found it interesting that Tulsa considers itself a rival of UNT. They're kinda in the stepchild position we are in Oklahoma. It would be nice to have a yearly home and home with them...both in football and in basketball. -
Phil Steele Picks The Sun Belt
Censored by Laurie replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
I think the top 4 is pretty acurate...FAU brings back 19 of 22 starters and every one in the nation has a man crush on ULM TB Calvin Dawson. I think we'll be better than FIU...but agreed with the concensus on here of .500 being a successful year. As for the all sbc teams: Jamario a first teamer after his last 2 years is a surprise...I think Tyrell Fenroy may have been a better choice. I am quite disappointed by the lack of any of our front seven being listed on first team defense (Jeremiah Chapman and Maurice Holman). Also...interesting transition for Troy...they came into the SBC as a defensive team and have no first team defensive players this season...and just 4 on all 4 teams. -
Sun Belt Should Be All About Hoops
Censored by Laurie replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Basketball
CMJ...this is Texas...good luck convincing the masses that there is anything more important in this world than football. The strength of the Sun Belt has always been basketball...and that has taken a backseat in the past 6-7 years to football programs that are barely holding on to division 1 status. This is by no means to say that I think the Sun Belt shouldn't support football...nor that football should go back to D-1A, but SBC schools were once regarded with the same respect as the Missouri Valley Conference...but that has slipped considerably since football has become a priority...and that is most evident last year...when UNT was the only SBC school even considered for the tourney...and we were a F'ing 15 seed. It shows how much we have allowed the prestigue of SBC basketball to decline when the Ivy, Patriot and the America East conference qualifiers got better seeds and we were on par with the Big Sky and the Southland. I think best case for the SBC (if USA had won the tourney) we may have gotten a 14...but no higher. The Big East is, and has been a basketball conference. Their top football programs; West Virginia and Louisville have only recently become nationally successful...and Louisville is still a basketball school no matter how successful they become in football. Miami settled for the Big East initially when the ACC didn't want to expand...and the school the Big East misses the most from re-alignment is Boston College b/c of the balance they brought to the conference -
Greatest High School Running Back You Ever Saw Play?
Censored by Laurie replied to NT03's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm deviating from the topic a bit...but i was a high school kid in Fort Worth (this is how I'm quantifying my response) and I remember going to almost every home TCU game and watching LaDanian Tomlinson run around, through and over WAC linebackers and safeties every week. He was an absolute joy to watch play the game and hands down my favorite NFL player to this day. -

Thinking On Tristan Thompson
Censored by Laurie replied to Censored by Laurie's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I feel the majority of freshmen do look at the basketball hierarchy more than how they fit in. Evidence of this is the fact that we have 3 (should've been 4) D-1 transfers from major conference schools on our roster. I don't look at NT as a last resort...but it isn't on the radar of top recruits yet either...and specifically Thompson who seemed to have Wichita State higher on his board than us. Now...I'm not saying I think Thompson will prove to be a spare...I just didn't see TT as being the impact player next season, so all i was attempting to do was get the view of those who felt he would be a starter next season -
4 Utep Bb Leave Team...possible Transfers?
Censored by Laurie replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Vanwright signed at Blinn for the coming season...Cooley do you have anything else on these other kids? While Alvin seems like an exciting player...if things go right with this class I don't see much of a place for him. -
I believe Cooley made the prediction that he felt Tristan Thompson would lead the team in scoring next season and compete for NCOY. Looking down the Brewster roster and commitments, heres a list of the schools other Brewster players have signed: Arizona, Univ. of Texas, Iowa State, Vanderbilt, Idaho and Creighton. I would say only Idaho is a less-respected program than UNT...which through specious reasoning one could assume TT was the 6th best graduate of Brewster this season. I'm just wondering if we may be over-rating him.

Cotton Bowl Classic Moves To Arlington In 2010
Censored by Laurie replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Jerry wanted to keep the Cowboys in Dallas...and was willing to contribute more to the building of a downtown stadium had the city been more inviting. He's been to Baltimore, and Indy, and Seattle and all the places that have or will have brand new stadiums in the heart of their respective downtowns, and he understands the financial benefit of setting up shop there. To say Dallas was not in a financial position to keep the Cowboys is just wrong when you look at the investment they are making in the Cotton Bowl. Would it have cost more to build Jerryland...of course...but it was Dallas' either short-sightedness or arrogance that Jerry wouldn't leave Dallas that cost the city its team...and soon its Bowl Game. After being shunned by Dallas there is no reason for Jerry to turn down the Cotton Bowl. Don't blame Jerry for being a shrewed businessman. Blame Laura Miller and the Dallas City Council for not looking out for the best interests of their city. Also...I feel its important to note: I HATE THE COWBOYS. I even feel a bit dirty defending Jerry, so this isn't me being a homer...just a History and Urban Studies student seeing a city dramatically mismanaged -
I've said it before...I hope NCAA College Football 08 has a conference re-alignment feature...mine wouldn't be identical to this (I want Baylor in UNT's conference) but it be similar

That is not a rivalry. TCU is SMU's rival. One football game and two basketball games in the past 7 years does not make a rivalry...especially not with a program who has a clear rival. Its the Maryland-Duke-North Carolina love triangle I mentioned on here before. SMU does not care about us...so it would benefit everybody's credibility on here to stop pretending that there is a rivalry there...it would be great to have one 30 minutes away...it just isn't going to happen. At our current juncture...we don't have a rivalry. New Mexico St was developing into one...but they left for WACkier pastures and they stopped returning our calls...bitch. If your looking for a basketball rivalry...we just now capitilized on our talent and became successful...and success breeds hatred...and thats our only hope of a rivalry developing with our void of a geographical neighbor. If ASU continues to excel while ULAR stays pathetic...MAYBE there will develop a bit of a rivalry there. I think our best hope...in all sports...is that Troy's basketball program catches up to its football program and our football program regains its early aut form and a rivalry develops there over time. Troy is gaining some major national cred for its football...if Dodge can get us competing for SBC titles with Troy a rivalry will naturally develop. Also...if you are really seeking a rivalry...you can't keep pushing the latest conference jump agenda as well...b/c we'll start from square one again. Please stop saying there is any sort of rivalry with SMU...it makes us look like the jealous stepchild competing for our parents attention.

Possible 2008 Basketball-football Recruit
Censored by Laurie replied to Buford_Julep's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Also Matt Trannon at Michigan State and Justin Gage at Mizzou were 2 sport players...but not of the basketball caliber to take a scholarship. Nor was Julius Peppers. With so few basketball scholarships it would be a huge risk to rely on a guy who's getting physically abused 12 weeks a year to be a consistant contributor. Peppers, Trannon and Gage were all considered walk ons. Now, if he is a good enough football player to merit a ship and he wants to add depth and contribute to the basketball team as well...without a scholarship spot...I am all for it. Thats kind of what Blount and Awasom did...tho they never saw the floor at the pit. -
I was scrolling down becoming livid until the previous post...if something like this is going to happen Hayden Fry HAS to be included...Give me Hayden Fry, Joe Greene, Abner Hayes and the face of our bowl streak the great Booger Kennedy...perhaps saving a little bit of room to the right of Booger for Villereal's face here in 20 years once he's built us into a nationally repsected program. Oh...and George Dunham hovering above all of them like some omnipotent diety.

Adding on to Cooley's thought of a smaller, quicker line-up...Howerton playing the five with 3 wings and a guard or 2 wings and 2 guards around him could be a very potent line-up. Howerton clogging the middle, and 4 guys running the floor. I rag on Howerton, but you can't teach 6'10 250. Many teams, especially in the SBC, would love to have a player of his mass. He's never going to be a polished post scorer, but if he can get his coordination down and learn 2 moves he will be a big benefit here for the next 2 seasons

Thank You GTTB: I think it's such a sorry state of affairs when an American Idol contestant is considered famous alumni...if we could get Norah Jones, I'm in...probably with a diamond ring and some form of rehersed proposal.

Thoughts On Odufuwa, Unt's Class
Censored by Laurie replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I've always viewed Harold as more of a 3 as well...but lack of real front court depth will force him into the 4/5 role. Ben Bell will of course run the point, backed up by Ryan McCoy and Josh White (I hope he does, but it would surprise me if he's redshirted unless JJ feels confident he's commited to UNT for his entire career). I think you have Collin Dennis starting at the 2 and Collin Mangrum at the 3, with Adam McCoy running in as 6th man and Tristan Thompson getting his feet wet in D-1 basketball. A 3 man rotation in the frontcourt with Q and Keith Wooden starting and Harold working off the bench, and Howerton taking up space for 5-10 minutes a game. -
I soooo should've chosen that graduation plan...I'd only be half-way done with school. If your a student on here...NEVER GRADUATE! Work Sucks. If you're a parent paying for a student...ummm...sorry...you know I'm right though
-
Not sure on the pronounciation...but be careful how you present the scholarship situation...its essentially sementics but Odufuwa counts against our current available scholarships, meaning we have one available at the moment. Odufuwa won't occupy a roster spot until 08-09...but like Collin Dennis is class of 2006, he will be considered incoming class of 2007.

Our best recruiting pipeline seems to be the ASU campus in Tempe. Very happy Odufuwa signed.
