It's a Weird 4-1, But I'll Take It
SilverEagle replied to Son of Spiriki's topic in Mean Green Football
What's more impressive is that Porter transferred as a WR not a RB. So I'll give Cobbs credit for spotting his "potential" as a RB and developing him during the spring and fall. Speaking of potential. Porter played some QB in High School. Is there a halfback pass in the future? Also, can you imagine how well Morris would be doing if he had spent the spring working with the team.....and the system? -
You mean after Mitchell?

Is this the best team UNT has ever had?
SilverEagle replied to meangreenfaninno's topic in Mean Green Football
Well, let me start my answer (or non-answer) with some perspective. Imagine how that game would have gone last night had we not had SO MANY STUPID FRIGGIN PENALTIES. This is a question that really should be re-visited at the end of the season. Or between the last game and the bowl game. If there is no bowl game, then the question is moot. What it looks like to me is that the coaching staff is still plugging-in new guys in to see how they perform in a game situation. My observation through the years has been that, by and large, people who practice well usually do well in a game. However, there are those players who come alive at game time and thrive in that environment. On offense, the "plugging in the new guys" tends to be the receivers and RB's. I wasn't terribly impressed with Carnes (#7) in the beginning of the season, but I was last night. The same goes for "0" Mr. Conwright. On defense, they seem to be mainly plugging in new DL players and looking at how the new guys do in different situations. Same for DB's. I noticed that they are giving 89 (Dawkins a senior transfer) more playing time, as well as 46 (Lamperi) who is a true freshman. Our OL is still a works in progress. They pretty much kept Morris safe on passing downs, but they really got stuffed on running plays.....especially in the first half. We cannot have a repeat of that vs Tulane/Memphis/Army. As to comparing this team to others. I would throw in the 1988 "flying wishbone" team to the mix. You know, the one that beat Texas....and Tech....and Rice. -
I noticed at the SFA game that when they have that group gathering around the coach by the sideline it is usually the players that are in the two deep. Mestemaker was out there, but Cash was not. He also didn't do any of the "pitch and catch" sessions that the QB's and WR's do on the sideline. Even our juco transfer (#5) participated in those.

Improving the Student Game Day Experience
SilverEagle replied to El Paso Eagle's topic in Mean Green Football
I think that at one time NT might have had some questionable standards (such as math/science classes for "non-math/science" majors). However, that has all changed. Sometime in the late 90's or early 2000's NT changed their "core requirements".....in an upward manner. No more of those classes for "non-science/math majors". I worked for a state agency that mainly employed social work majors for their professional positions. As a result we would have field placement students from the UNT school of Social Work (I don't know if it exists any longer). One such student was placed with my unit for a semester, and it was after the time when UNT changed it's core requirements for all students. In between going out with workers "out in the field" she would sit at the common table in our office space and do her homework. One day I happened by, and just to make conversation I asked her what she was working on. Her response was "trigonometry". She said it was required. "Trig?" I said....for a social work major? Yep, she said, and "I also have to take real chemistry and biology classes, it's part of the core requirement changes/upgrade". She then said "you know it really isn't that hard to get into NT"....and as she turned back to work on her homework she added "the hard part is getting out". -

PLUS, from 65-70 North Texas had 17 players drafted into the NFL. Including two first rounders. -
...AND if they keep improving, they might actually earn the right to be called the MEAN GREEN. But they have a long way to go from that 66-68 group.

Isn't this "coach speak" day as well?

The actual game story on Sunday was written by the reporter from the Lubbock Avalanche Journal. Naturally it was from the TT point of view. I think I would have preferred that they (like the ST) had just ignored us. At least for this game.

And what are we going to do to KEEP THEM COMING BACK?
-
And how much in the way of resources does he have to work with? What is SFA's athletic budget compared to ours? What did he and his dad have in the way of resources when they were at WTA&M? They actually built a large fan base and got the communities of Canyon and Amarillo involved in their program. I guarantee you that if Cody Carthel had been hired, he and his dad would have worked their asses of to recruit, coach football, and get out in the Denton and surrounding communities to promote, promote, promote.

Fans love the opportunity to participate, that's why yell traditions exist at traditional schools. WE HAVE NONE!
-
Well, we had that choice when the Morris hire took place. We could have hired ANOTHER west Texas boy and gotten BOTH DEFENCE AND OFFENSE. When Cody Carthel was assistant coach for his dad at WT A&M they ran a Dodge-like offense. We saw how Cody Carthel can coach defense a week ago. When he was at Commerce, he coached a (D-2) all-American QB.

I see why they are doing it. But I don't like those helmets.

Time to go back to North Texas State?
SilverEagle replied to Dannymacfan's topic in Mean Green Football
When Hayden Fry was still here, he is said to have mentioned talking to Woody Hayes on the phone about scheduling a future game. Woody commented that NT might get more gigs if they sounded more big time. His main example was for us to change our name to Texas State. -

Here is the irony of this "nostalgia"? The NT administration NEVER wanted that name (NTSU). In 1960 when we achieved University status it necessitated a name change. The FIRST choice of the administration was UNT. A bill was drawn up and we got a representative from (I think) Mineral Wells to file it. Everything went fine with the representatives, but when it got to the Senate it hit a wall. Several senators (no doubt UT grads) threatened to filibuster the bill if it proceeded as written. A compromise was worked out and because "University" had to be in our name, NTSU was agreed upon. We had to go back three other times to try and change it to UNT, and the third time was finally successful.......but just barely. Gov. Clements (an SMU grad) signed the bill and here we are, being nostalgic for NTSU.- 42 replies

Not being sarcastic, but I don't know how any win can be ugly. Maybe there was lots of "adversity" during the game that you had to overcome, and deal with, or overcome.....and that includes yourself. Hell, the shape of the ball itself is one big built-in bundle of "adversity". But in dealing with it, you learn.....or should learn. In the early stages of the game Saturday I was reminded of a very good quote from Rockey 1. Apollo Creed is in the corner with his trainer and had just endured a pretty rough round. His trainer gave him a reality check. Apollo's Trainer: He doesn't know it's a damn show! He thinks it's a damn fight!

Mean Green Maniacs making an imapct

....you mean like all the other big time programs in America do? -
Yeah, and it's bad enough that we are relentlessly pounded by "thumpity-thumpity-thumpity" noise which eliminates any possibility of having a conversation about the game. Then last night it was an extra hour of that shit......geeeezz. Give me back the days when the band was the only one providing music at the game.

Life is full of choices. Some of them work out great. And some of them don't. The season is still young.

Well, this is great to see. I still don't understand why something like this wasn't organized by the Talons years ago. -
Just curious. But does anyone know why Harris (#44) came over and sat on the sideline and seemed especially upset and was comforted by several players and staff? Was he especially close to Price? Was he the first to witness the horrific injury? He didn't run over to the ambulance with the rest of his team to show support for their teammate while he was being loaded into the ambulance. Once again, just curious.

****OFFICIAL SFA vs UNT In-Game DISCUSSION****
SilverEagle replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
The Amarillo paper agreed with all of us. Here is an article from 2010 about Carthel. Carthel era at WT could be best (amarillo.com) I read another article about Carthel not long after he was hired. One of the other pluses about him was that he was great at meeting & greeting the public. He went to every club and organization in the Canyon/Amarillo area to promote his program at WT A&M. And he was good at it too. How good was Todd Dodge at meeting and greeting the public? How about McCarney? addendum: during Carthel's tenure (2005-2012) there were 16 players from WT A&M drafted by the NFL. How many were drafted during the Dodge/McCarney era?
