At the risk of sounding nit-pickey, Miami built a dynasty in a very short period of time. In the mid-to-late-70's their BOR almost voted to end football. Look how things have turned out for them. Around 1970 Boise St. was little more than a JUCO. From that humble point, they eventually joined D-1 in the mid-90's around the same time that we re-joined D-1. South Florida has only recently been D-1, yet they are now in the Big East. BTW, like us, they also compete for the fan's dollar in a very competitive sports area. I think that these are just a few examples of why a lot of people are frustrated with our slow progress. Now, once upon a time we were in a position like South Florida and/or FAU. We had a dynamic coach (like FAU) who was a great promoter. We had some big time wins and we were gaining lots of media attention. And then the fans (and IMHO the administration) blew it.

Hopefully the paperwork comes through on the QB. Call me paranoid, but this makes me a bit nervous.

Aren't we describing Booger? We don't have to go to Japan, we just need to tap into the Tongan/Samoa pipeline that Utah and the West coast teams seem to have. There is a huge Tongan (sp?) community in Euless. All we have to do is have our recruiter for that area learn the "HAKA" and we should have it made. On a more serious note, if we can't seem to find good DT's on our own, then maybe we should hire our former head coach Corkey Nelson to find us some. Corkey used to bring in the most mean, tenacious, (albiet undersized) DT's I've ever seen at North Texas. Examples are Rayford Cooks (6'2" X 220lbs), Ronnie Hickman (6'2" X 215) and Rex Johnson (6'1"X 235). When North Texas played Texas in 1983, I saw Rayford Cooks take on O-Linemen from Texas who were at least 40lbs heavier and play them to a stand-still all night long. When Rex Johnson was playing for us, I never saw him being blocked by any one lineman. It always took a minimum of two O-Lineman to handle him.....and sometimes not even then. My point in this rant is not so much about the size of our current or future DL's, but how much strength and tenacity our DL's (and LB's for that matter) have. Recent examples are Michael Pruitt and Evan Cardwell. Go back a few years and another example would be Corbin Montgomery. Booger was a great talent, but lets face it, when he was injured his level of play fell off noticably. Plus he was known to take-off plays from time to time, and (IMHO) I don't think that Booger was particularly mean. We need to get a group of players on defense that cause our opponents to say "damn, I hate to run into that line, those guys are downright nasty". Our opponents need to know that every time they run at our defense, they are going to get MUGGED not HANDLED. Oh, for the days when our defensive players (like Cedric Hardman) got custom tags on their cars that said "NASTY".

Out of the 89 players listed on the roster of the UNT/Troy game this year, 26 (including walk-ons) were from the metroplex.

Besides, we wouldn't have to worry about the safety of our women as much, if there are not a bunch of AF cadets on campus.

The SID can only do so much. The press ignores him because it's their job to try and get "UNT copy"into the press/media. The media chooses to ignore North Texas for two reasons. 1. We haven't had a credible and consistent OCC win record in the last decade. Yes, we've had a win or two, but nothing consistent. 2. The North Texas alumni in the metroplex allow them to get away with it. Now, as to #2, I'm not talking about sending an e-mail and whining about not being on the front page all the time. I'm talking about sending e-mails in large numbers every time we are ignored entirely and/or the press/media coverage is inadequate for the event. For instance, every time we play a game in the metroplex, and the results of the game are not even mentioned, we need to consistently and in large numbers, send e-mails to that particular writer/TV/Radio reporter and tell them that you find their lack of reporting of North Texas sports inadequate and/or unacceptable. If you can find out who their sponsor is, then make sure the sponsor is cc'd on the e-mail. And make sure that you mention that you will not use that product and/or service as long as North Texas continues to be treated in such an unfair and arbitrary manner. And when (or if ) you do this, make sure that the people you are sending the e-mail to can tell that you are a college graduate. When you send whining, rambling e-mails, it's much easier to ignore you.

He coached at Miss St. He came to NT after leaving Miss St. under less than ideal circumstances. It seems that Miss. St. was put on probation shortly after he left (or was asked to leave) and the violations occured while he was coaching there. I think that he left here after some allegations that there was some "irregularities" in the athletic dept's budget, after an "audit" had taken place. When Tyler had applied for the job, one of the other candidates/applicants was Corky Nelson. Another in a long line of bone headed decisions by the administration in hiring a football coach. Or in this particular case, NOT hiring the right coach.

I'll probably be there. I suppose that (metaphorically speaking) if you're thirsty enough (no football for over 9 months), you'll drink just about anything........even vinegar.

Well, until this year, the Horns regularly settled for second place. There is a difference between being competitive and being competitive with class.

That's true. But the part of the recruitment season (mid-term JUCOs) that will give us the most immediate help is almost over. Maybe when word gets out that we have a QB with "great potential", it will encourage some "on the fence" lineman to sign-up.

I think I can be that guy.” Now, that's a good start. To me, one of the most important qualities of an outstanding QB is having confidence in their ability as a leader. Having said that, I'm now ready for him to quit talking. The remainder of his "talking" should take place in the spring......with a football in his hand. “I was real impressed with the facilities at UNT and the academic program,” Carlson said. “I like the offense they run because it’s similar to the system we run here. They guys also seemed to get along really well. It seemed like a family.” So, Kilgore also runs a boring offense? I'm glad we're not the only fans that have to suffer.

I was hoping to hear that we were about to sign (out of a JUCO) the second coming of Nick Zuniga or Brian Waters. I was also hoping that we were about to sign (out of JUCO) the second coming of Michael Pruitt, or Evan Cardwell, or Booger Kennedy.....or even (for those who remember) Rex Johnson. I'm happy that we have someone with "great potential", like Mr. Wilson. But unless we SERIOUSLY address our DL concerns, and to a great extent or OL concerns, Mr. Wilson had better work on lowering his 40's time from 4.6 to about 4.4 or 4.3. Otherwise he's going to get more than a collarbone injured while he's out there running for his life. In the coming months I hope to hear reports that ALL of our OL and DL have taken up residence in the weight room. If not, then I hope to hear that the coaching staff has encouraged them to leave. Unless we get some serious help in the mid-term signings, then the only way we are going to get significantly better is through more time spent in the weight room.

Right now we are talking about Mr. Wilson's "potential". As I recall, Dandy Don Meredith used to say that "potential is when you ain't done it yet". Fortunately we won't have to wait long to see how Mr. Wilson performs in pads when he suits up this spring.

I don't know what JQ's official 40's time is, but I certainly think he's tall enough and big enough to play in the NFL. Good God people, can you imagine how well JQ would do when he DOESN'T have to make a circus catch on 1/3 of all of his catches?

So getting back to the issue of "how can we reasonably comply" have the title IX people given out a working definition of what "opportunities" mean to them? I totally agree with you about women athletes and their "real world" attitudes. However, I'm interested in how the title IX people look at this situation. Just because women athletes are not as delusional as male athletes, doesn't mean that the football team at any University should suffer.

He also mentioned that Brian Waters played HS football in Dallas. I believe he played his HS football at Denton.
