  1. Oh my! I just got this mental picture of the North Texas fans as "Tiny Tim Cratchit" looking through the toy store window as "Tiny Tim's" favorite toy is being handed to another child. ....... Sigh!!!
  2. I suppose "considering" is better than nothing. I would prefer to hear the words "strongly leaning" or "favores". BTW, does anyone know if Joe Greene still retains any name recognition among the HS football players of today?
  3. With someone like Mills, these discussions usually fall on the opposite ends of the spectrum. People that played for him have one strong opinion, and people who interacted with him as alumni have another. I first met him when he was the head coach at Decatur and I was completing my student teaching there. The non-football staff didn't particularly like him or trust him, as they saw him mostly as a salesman. The only thing was that he took Decatur furthur into the playoffs than they had ever been. That Decatur team (fall of 1975) was the most disciplined and tough-minded group of players that I had ever seen there. They weren't the biggest or fastest team going into the playoffs, they were just the toughest and best prepared. The North Texas defenses during the Corky Nelson era were always tough and well prepared. I believe that Mills was the DC during that time. North Texas lost some games during that era by some fairly large scores, but I never saw them quit like the defenses that went up against Texas in 04, Baylor in 04, and Tulsa this year. We beat TCU in 1986 mainly because TCU had about 6 turnovers. Those turnovers were as a result of a North Texas defense knocking the hell out of TCU. During the time he was an assistant coach under Corky, we had wins over New Mexico, NMSU, Kansas St., TCU, SMU, Texas Tech, and Rice. In addition, Mills was always selling and promoting the program. It didn't seem to matter if you were a big doner or not. When he was at North Texas he was one of the most approachable people you would ever be around. One time (in early summer) I walked into the lobby of the athletic dept. to try and get a schedule. Mills was standing close to the entrance of his office and suddenly I was greeted with a "hey there! how're you doin'.... are you here to renew your season tickets?" Go into the athletic dept. now and see if you're treated that way.
  4. Yep, he was a Hayden Fry recruit. I just looked in my (pocket sized) 1978 media guide, and one of the "newcomers" was Mark Witte....from San Marcos.....coached in High School by Jack Hawthorne.
  5. Sorry' bout that. You stated that in your thread title. The 02 media guide doesn't say if he was drafted, but it says that he played (and was a star) with the Giants from 65 to 75. It also said that in 64 he lead North Texas in receiving, punt returns, punting (with a 39.6 average), and interceptions.
  6. Hmmm, didn't know about that rule. Well, my great-great Grandfather also died in Texas (we think) and is buried in the Palestine City Cemetary. He's originally from New York. My great-Grandfather is buried at the Troop cemetary...even though he lived in Tyler. And he was born in Illinois, or Michigan, depending on which document you read.
  7. I'm sure it was because of a personality conflict...........Mills had one.
  8. I think you left out Carl (Spider) Lockhart from the mid-60's. He was a star player with the Giants. Ron Battle was a Fry player, as was Louis Haynes. Whitte must have been a Jerry Moore recruit. Elliott was a transfer from the University of Ill. I think he only played one year...maybe two.
  9. Dang! Between you and Plumm, I feel like the new kid on the Texas block. My family moved to Palestine around 1881. My grandfather was the first born in Texas (1892), so I guess that makes me a third generation Texan. My grandfather was a union man (Railroad), a mason, and (as my Republican mother used to call him....with much disdain in her voice) a "Roosevelt Democrat". He was also invited to join the KKK......which he declined.
  10. I was for Texas Wednesday night and I'm a "friggin Democrat". Anytime they play another team from another state, I will always be for them. Otherwise, I respect their program and what they've accomplished, but (as DeepGreen might say) I don't like the "arrogant sum'bitches". And it annoyes me when people go out and "buy the T-shirt" and suddenly they are part of the "Texas tradition". And they've never even set foot on the campus, much less taken a class there.
  11. Please review the discussions on another thread about Vince Young being able to consistently run over NFL defenses. I watched Byerly in the spring of 05 and saw him run over a few defensive players. I also saw him get a mild concussion during at least one practice, and heard about him getting another one at another practice. Now, if the 05 North Texas defense gives you a mild concussion, then imagine what would happen if you try run over the Texas defense. I think that a nationally broadcast game would give us great publicity if we play tough and smart. It is also a good opportunity for us to show that our fan base is both growing and loyal. For that game we need to sell out our allotment of tickets and EVERYONE NEEDS TO SHOW UP WEARING GREEN. And I mean ALL GREEN, not some shirt that has a green stripe on it. The Green Bridage needs to be VERY LOUD and at their musical best, and the dancers need to have their most "noticable" outfits on. Believe it or not, it's the fan base and their lack of spirit that has the bad reputaion. Moreso than the football team. THAT is what we on this board REALLY have control over.
  12. Hmmmm, interesting. My question would be, could we afford his salary AND the salaries of the assistants that he wanted to bring in?
  13. I voted for "fans anger toward UT". Do some of us really think that they care about our disapproval?
  14. Let's see, we've already given them a good audition with our Tulsa and So. Miss games......
  15. Defensive...big, strong, and mean.
  16. I offer Mr. Young a LOT of money to go pro. Vince may have acted less than mature after the Heisman ceremony......but he was right about being the best. Everyone went crazy over that Bush run, (and dive into the end zone) that two other Texas backs (#25 & #11) could probably have duplicated. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that Young's offensive totals were pretty close to the same as Linert's (sp?) and Bush's combined.
  17. I think this is how we nailed the committment from Jamario. This is where we show what a big happy family we are. We're even nice to DD at this event.
  18. That half-time show was pathetic. People expect you to be a TEXAS BAND! Do your REGULAR STUFF and finish up with a rousing rendention of the "Wabash Cannonball". The Beatles forgodsakes......geeezzzzz.
  19. ....I will buy you a six-pack of your favorite beer.
  20. Don't forget that in our last 1-AA playoff game (with Boise St.) our winning drive was halted by an interception......by a one armed DB!
  21. And his SAT score?
  22. I'm going to have to part company with my friend FFR on this issue. From my point of view, we have a meeting between two programs that I generally regard as a couple of "arrogant ba$tard$". Now, if Texas (and their fans) ever gave us much of a thought, I'm sure that they would pull for us against any team that we might play against in any future NO bowl(s). That's assuming of course that they even give us much of a thought......which they might. Now, those of you who are so inclined to pull for SC in tonights game certainly have the right to do so. But I am damn sure that those arrogant ba$tard$ would never recognize that we even exsist....much less give us, or our program, so much as a fleeting thought. The only time that I ever pull for SC, is when they are playing Notre Dame (the ultimate arrogant ba$tard$.....well, them and SMU). So, it looks like the whorns have my support tonight. And they have it by the mere margin of a fleeting thought...
  23. As a salute to the Longhorns for making it to the Rose Bowl, and to get everyone in the mood for the game. http://fightmusic.com/big12.html You'll have to scroll down to UT, and choose your favorite "Texas" tune.
  24. Well, you can always look at it this way. If Vince Young has a great game, he might decide to go pro. And then WE won't have to face him this fall.
  25. I think my best friend mentioned this young man to me last year. My friend used to be married to a woman from this family. I've met many of them, and the men in the family are built like big ol' Germans.......which they are. The family is originally from Muenster.
