  1. He's an irreverent smart-a$$, but he's not an idiot. New Rule: Stop introducing a new iPod every month. First came the original, then the Mini, then the Shuffle, now the Nano. It's so slim Kate Moss uses it to cut her cocaine.
  2. It starts again in February. Here is a new rule that references our favorite school.......Baylor. New Rule: Words printed on a coffee cup will not turn you gay. A Baylor University dining contractor has banned Starbucks cups that have a quote from a gay author. Listen, breeders, you can't get AIDS from a Styrofoam container. And besides, if you're holding a double half-caf, vanilla mocha latte, extra foam sprinkled with nutmeg, you're already gay!
  3. Oh, don't worry Chad. I'm sure that we have numerous players on the squad that have spent most of their HS careers playing in pressure games, and who know how to win..........
  4. ....and as soon as the burn ban is over with in Tarrant Co.........hope you don't spend too much on it.
  5. .......and I'd be willing to bet that Jonathan Ieans will still be on the roster this spring and fall.
  6. They didn't choose Jerry Moore over Bill Brasher. They told Brasher that he would have to apply like everyone else, and that they would take his application under advisement. This pissed Brasher off so much that he made the decision to not go through the application process and instead joined Fry in Iowa. Brasher had devoted his playing and coaching career to North Texas. I don't know if he worked for Odus Mitchell, but he did work for Rod Rust, and Hayden Fry retained him when he took over the program. Since most head coaches like to bring their own people in, what did that say about Brasher's abilities as a coach? I was reminded of all this "North Texas Administrative boneheaded stuff", when I read recently about the Boise St. head coach being hired by Colorado. The Boise St. head coach is hired by Colorado on December the 17th. Immediately after that announcement (and I'm talking the same day folks) Boise St. officials announce that the DC has been elevated to the head coaching position. So, in one decisive stroke, the Boise St. program maintains a great deal of it's continuity, and they will probably continue (without much disruption) the progress that they've enjoyed for the last 20 years. Because you will never see the NT administration act with such decisiveness and forethought, we will always be fighting an uphill battle to get our football program operating any higher than where it is now.
  7. Promote North Texas in what way?
  8. Wasn't he the head coach at Texas Weslyan, who had some success there. As I recall, we hired him after he beat us with that "watching-paint-dry" offense. Just another example of how the administrators at North Texas make decisions. North Texas has an off night against TWU (in Fort Worth), we're looking for another coach, and BINGO! we get him.......
  9. NEW RULES FOR 2006: New Rule: Stop giving me that pop-up ad for Classmates.com! There's a reason you don't talk to people for 25 years. Because you don't particularly like them! Besides, I already know what the captain of the football team is doing these days: mowing my lawn. New Rule: Don't eat anything that's served to you out a window unless you're a seagull. People are acting all shocked that a human finger was found in a bowl of Wendy's chili. Hey, it cost less than a dollar. What did you expect it to contain? Trout? Luckily, it was only a finger! If it was a whole hand, Congress would have voted to keep it alive. New Rule: If you need to shave and you still collect baseball cards, you're gay. If you're a kid, the cards are keepsakes of your idols. If you're a grown man, they're pictures of men. New Rule: Ladies, leave your eyebrows alone. Here's how much men care about your eyebrows: do you have two of them? Okay, we're done. New Rule: There's no such thing as flavored water. There's a whole aisle of this crap at the supermarket, water, but without that watery taste. Sorry, but flavored water is called a soft drink. You want flavored water? Pour some scotch over ice and let it melt. That's your flavored water. New Rule: Stop screwing with old people. Target is introducing a redesigned pill bottle that's square, with a bigger label. And the top is now the bottom. And by the time grandpa figures out how to open it, his ass will be in the morgue. Congratulations, Target, you just solved the Social Security crisis. New Rule: The more complicated the Starbucks order, the bigger the jerk. If you walk into a Starbucks and order a "decaf grande half-soy, half-low fat, iced vanilla, double-shot, gingerbread cappuccino, extra dry, light ice, with one Sweet-n'-Low and one NutraSweet,".... ooooh, you're such a huge jerk. New Rule: I'm not the cashier! By the time I look up from sliding my card, entering my PIN number, pressing "Enter," verifying the amount, deciding, no, I don't want cash back, and pressing "Enter" again, the kid who is supposed to be ringing me up is standing there eating my Almond Joy. Paper, plastic? I don't have time for that. I've just been called to do a cleanup on Aisle Nine! New Rule: Girl! Just because your tattoo has Chinese characters in it doesn't make you spiritual. It's right above the crack of your butt. And it translates to "beef with broccoli." The last time you did anything spiritual, you were praying to God you weren't pregnant. You're not spiritual. You're just high. New Rule: Competitive eating isn't a sport. It's one of the seven deadly sins. ESPN recently televised the US Open of Competitive Eating, because watching those athletes at the poker table was just too damned exciting. What's next, competitive flatulents? Oh wait. They're already doing that. It's called "The Howard Stern Show." New Rule: I don't need a bigger mega M&M. If I'm extra hungry for M&Ms, I'll go nuts and eat two. New Rule: If you're going to insist on making movies based on crappy, old, television shows then you have to give everyone in the Cineplex a remote so we can see what's playing on the other screens. Let's remember the reason something was a television show in the first place is the idea wasn't good enough to be a movie. New Rule: No more gift registries. You know, it used to be just for weddings. Now it's for babies and new homes and graduations from rehab. Picking out the stuff you want and having other people buy it for you isn't gift giving, it's the white people version of looting. New Rule: When I ask how old your toddler is, I don't need to know in months. "27 Months."! "He's two," will do just fine. He's not a cheese
  10. You think that Mackey is corrupt? Jack, you are such a kind soul. BTW, is it possible that Vic Mackey and Darrell Dickey were separated at birth?
  11. Al Swearingen. He gets what he wants.......what ever it takes. Besides, he would give a great post-game interview......most of which would be bleeped out.
  12. We didn't play Rice until the very last game of the season that year. Our next game after that was the 1-AA play-off game with......Marshall.....which we barely lost 0-7.
  13. NO COACH should have to "get the memo" about winning OCC games. It should be "HARD WIRED" into their circuitry.
  14. I hear that Dominque Green has shown promise. How about Devin Cox, Arthur Stubblefield and Kartay Agobottah?
  15. Ok, back to the VW bug. Does anyone have any ideas about how to get this painted? Would anyone be willing to contribute time/funds to the project? thanks
  16. that's what I was thinking.....
  17. Posted on Tue, Jan. 10, 2006 COLLEGE NOTES Record donation to OSU Wire ReportsOklahoma State University plans to announce a donation today touted as the highest in NCAA history for an athletic program. The donation would be the latest in a series of large gifts for the university, which is overhauling and expanding its athletic facilities. The size of the donation and the person making it were not disclosed. Oklahoma State hopes to create an athletic village with upgraded facilities. According to OSU, the school spent $11.7 million on its athletic facilities from 1967 to 1999. The university's athletic budget ranks 10th in the Big 12. The cost of the plan is estimated at $500 million. HEAVY SIGH!!
  18. ....there's also the factor of the coach's expectations.
  19. I'd like to revive this thread and add some ideas/thoughts. I'd like to see some off-season projects to keep people interested and give people something positive to do. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was thinking that North Texas doesn't any fans with "North Texas vehicles" to show up on campus on game day, as well as to tailgate in and around. I never hear of, or have seen anyone drive around campus with a green and white vehicle festooned with North Texas flags, banners etc, the day of the game. Or the day before the game, to remind students that there is a home game to attend. John Denver mention last off-season that he had a VW bug that he would like to get painted Green so that he could take it to the games. If anyone is knowledgable about car body work and/or painting, I think this would be a great off-season project. I would be glad to offer labor on this project. Another suggestion would be if someone has an old travel trailer or motor home that could be "spruced-up" and painted/decorated for use on gameday tailgating, or to take to out of town games. That would be a great off season project. Just thowing out some ideas.
  20. I was reading a story in the ST about who might be taking VY's place this fall for Texas. Colt McCoy (a RS freshman) was mention, as was Jevan Snead from Stephenville. The article mentioned that as soon as VY's decision was known to the coaches, Greg Davis called Snead to basically say that the competition was going to be open during spring. I know that Snead is enrolling at Texas and will be a student this spring. It's already assumed that he will be working out with the team as soon as they meet and start off season work-outs. So here is my question. The national signing date is 02-01-06. Do all the rules about contacting potential recruits etc not apply with Snead? If he starts working out with some of the team members before 02-01-06 has he (and UT) somehow violated a NCAA rule about recruits? Just curious.
  21. And then we have this. UT should have no QB worries By JOHN MILLERStar-Telegram Staff WriterSAN ANTONIO -- Should Vince Young leave Texas for the NFL, Jevan Snead feels like he's ready to take over as quarterback of the Longhorns. The former Stephenville quarterback gave no reason Saturday for people to doubt him. Snead was the most effective quarterback that played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, throwing two touchdowns for the West team, which lost 27-16 to the East team at the Alamodome in San Antonio. "This game really gave a boost to my confidence," Snead said. "Anytime you can go out and do well against these great athletes, it can only help your confidence." Snead finished the game 7-of-16, which included several dropped passes, for a game-high 133 yards and the only passing touchdowns of the game. The West had 11 first downs in the game, with Snead at quarterback for nine of them. "He's just got a good look in his eye when he plays football, and I like it," said Carroll coach Todd Dodge, an assistant for the West and a former Texas quarterback. "He had a great week working. I'm a little biased, but I'm real proud he had a good game because he's a Longhorn." Snead will enroll at Texas for the spring semester and heads there full of momentum after his successful showing against the best-of-the-best of high school football. He displayed a wide array of passes. He showed off his arm strength with a 40-yard bomb while on the run. And he showed he could pass with touch, with both of his touchdown passes coming on timing patterns. "He was the best of the quarterbacks," said West wide receiver Deon Beasley, who has also committed to Texas. "He got the ball there on time, threw it on the money and didn't overthrow many balls. He made great decisions on big third-down and fourth-down plays. He's a very smart athlete." Snead came into the game on the fourth series for the West after starter Mitch Mustain of Springdale, Ark., was ineffective on the first three drives. That changed on Snead's first possession as the West picked up its first first down. But the drive stalled, in part due to a bad pitch from Snead that led to an 8-yard loss. Snead made up for his mistake on his second possession as the West quickly moved the ball down the field. Snead even picked up a first down with a 10-yard run on a zone-read play, which Texas utilized often with Young. Facing a third-and-10 at the East 22-yard line, Snead connected with Beasley in the end zone to tie the game at 7-7. "It was one of many touchdown catches between me and Snead," Beasley said. "We've got four more years of that. It really didn't surprise me because it worked all week." Snead took over the West offense on the third drive in the second half and again effectively moved the offense. He threw for 101 yards in the second half, finishing the game with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Terrence Austin on fourth down with 1:35 left in the game that brought the West to within 27-16. "I'm extremely pleased with my performance," Snead said. "That was fun, and now I'm extremely excited to be going [to Texas]." U.S. ARMY ALL-AMERICAN BOWL EAST 27, WEST 16
  22. So are you saying that we might as well just kiss this prospect goodbye?
  23. Oh my! I just got this mental picture of the North Texas fans as "Tiny Tim Cratchit" looking through the toy store window as "Tiny Tim's" favorite toy is being handed to another child. ....... Sigh!!!
  24. I suppose "considering" is better than nothing. I would prefer to hear the words "strongly leaning" or "favores". BTW, does anyone know if Joe Greene still retains any name recognition among the HS football players of today?
  25. With someone like Mills, these discussions usually fall on the opposite ends of the spectrum. People that played for him have one strong opinion, and people who interacted with him as alumni have another. I first met him when he was the head coach at Decatur and I was completing my student teaching there. The non-football staff didn't particularly like him or trust him, as they saw him mostly as a salesman. The only thing was that he took Decatur furthur into the playoffs than they had ever been. That Decatur team (fall of 1975) was the most disciplined and tough-minded group of players that I had ever seen there. They weren't the biggest or fastest team going into the playoffs, they were just the toughest and best prepared. The North Texas defenses during the Corky Nelson era were always tough and well prepared. I believe that Mills was the DC during that time. North Texas lost some games during that era by some fairly large scores, but I never saw them quit like the defenses that went up against Texas in 04, Baylor in 04, and Tulsa this year. We beat TCU in 1986 mainly because TCU had about 6 turnovers. Those turnovers were as a result of a North Texas defense knocking the hell out of TCU. During the time he was an assistant coach under Corky, we had wins over New Mexico, NMSU, Kansas St., TCU, SMU, Texas Tech, and Rice. In addition, Mills was always selling and promoting the program. It didn't seem to matter if you were a big doner or not. When he was at North Texas he was one of the most approachable people you would ever be around. One time (in early summer) I walked into the lobby of the athletic dept. to try and get a schedule. Mills was standing close to the entrance of his office and suddenly I was greeted with a "hey there! how're you doin'.... are you here to renew your season tickets?" Go into the athletic dept. now and see if you're treated that way.
