  1. Well, thanks for that reminder.......as if I'm not depressed enough about the TT story.
  2. To give this a bit of perspective. Texas Tech has only been in exsistance since 1923. North Texas was in it's tenth year of playing football at that point. Tech regents approve construction for $45 million stadium expansion LUBBOCK, Texas Texas Tech's expanding its football stadium by ten-thousand seats -- including those in 19 new luxury suites. The Texas Tech University System regents today approved construction of the 45 (M) million expansion. Tech Athletic Director Gerald Myers says the approval is contingent on the athletic department obtaining the money -- of which as much as 20 (M) million dollars would come in gifts.* The east side expansion will include a parking garage for one-thousand-80 cars, 300 club seats, a 55-hundred-seat upper deck and 45-hundred more seats in each of the stadium's four corners. That would bring capacity to just over 63-thousand seats. The parking garage could be done by 2007 and the upper deck by the 2009 season. Myers said the expansion will put the school is about the middle of the Big 12 in stadium capacity. * And the rest would come from where?
  3. Jonesboro around Thanksgiving? That has the potential to be a "snow" game.
  4. Bump, original practice summary is updated.
  5. Today was a "hitting" day. There was some passing, but mostly there was just lining up and seeing who could block, tackle, and run....and several players felt it too. QB's Very unimpressive group today. Steve Prince was in sweats. He didn't seem to be limping so I don't know what his affliction was (maybe Illuvius found out). Maeger was out there, but he didn't do much except hand-off to running backs on their "get-ten-yards-in-three-plays" drills. I don't remember seeing him throw at all, but I wasn't watching the QB/WR drills, which were going on the same time as the above mentioned drills. BTW Illuvius pointed out (and I agree) there there was a bad case of fumbleitus amongst all of the QB's today. There were very few clean exchanges. Wilson looked the best of the group. He's still learning where his WR's are going on the short pass (so he throws behind them on occasion) but overall he seems pretty confident, and didn't seem the least bit flustered by the "learning" process. He still has a pretty long ball....although it was just a bit short today. Phillips didn't look impressive. His passes were wobbly and often off target. Definitely an off day for him. K Haynes looked worse than Phillips. For a record setting QB, he doesnt' seem to have a strong arm at all. Ieans was out there and for the first time didn't look like the worse one out there. His long ball is his best throw. LB/DL Oh man! There was some interesting moments out there on the LB drills. One drill was the open field tackling drill. All the RB's were given the ball 5 to 7 yards in front of the LB's and their job was to get by them. Except for one time, they all got by Ryan Davenport....one (Henderson) regularly got over him. To be fair to #48, many of the other LB's had a tough time of it themselves. Tobe Nwigwe did real well (especially when Henderson tried to run over him) as did Phillip Graves and Colt Mahan. The walk-on LB #54 was equally ineffective in this drill. He'd better pick it up if he wants to have a chance. Isssac Thomas is continuing his dominance out there. He is still pretty much unmovable. If he stays healthy thru the fall, he will help make the 3-4 work. Miller #65 looked good and was pushing people around, and Stewart #61 looked solid. My "iron man" award still goes to #89 Blake Burruss. He was holding his own out there with a taped-up forearm from a previous break. more to follow.... Okay, Medpilot covered the DB's. OL, Banks (#54) continues to be a force out there. Foster looks heavier than last year (maybe around 280) and was looking pretty aggressive in his play. Brown was looking pretty good too. Over-all this is a pretty physically impressive group. Jack Crumes looks a bit bigger than his listed weight (270), Adam Venagas looked in good shape (he's listed as 305), and Chris Eidd #78 was also a pretty impressive physical specimen at 6'3"X 320lbs. Eidd and Crumes were running second team. One of the early fights took place between Banks and Nwigwe. It was broken up quickly, but you have to admire Nwigwe's aggressiveness in trying to take on someone who was at least 65 to 70 lbs heaver than him. Overall I see the OL being a more aggressive group than last year. WR, Medpilot covered that pretty well. I saw a good "long ball" catch by Fernandez (#21). The down side is that he pushed-off right before the ball arrived. The up-side is that he was being aggressive in going after the ball. He's listed as 6'5", but he looks closer to 6'3" or 6'4" to me. If he works on his "pushing-off" technique ( ) he could be a real resource out there. I saw Roderick Johnson (#83) make a real good catch on a drill. We need more info on him. He looks to be about 6'1 or 6"2" and about 190. TE, Charles Brown (#84) looked good out there on some catches. Brian Carlson went down with what looked like a sprained knee during the "make-ten-yards-on-three-plays" drills. They just iced it and he was walking around (gingerly) with a light weight velcro knee brace when I left the practice. The good news is that he didn't have to be helped to the training table. RB Well, it looks as if Devin Cox is serious about being Ja-Mo's back-up. We already know that he is fast and elusive, but he demonstrated many times today that he is willing, and able, to deal out some punishment. For some reason, his favorite target was Roderick Cotton (#24). Every time Devin got past the line on the "ten-yards-three-play" drill and Cotton came up to make the tackle, Devin never tried to juke him. He would lower his shoulder and try and run over him. There was one collision that was pretty impressive. Cotton hit Devin and wrapped his arms around him, but Devin went down on top of Cotton... a yard or so past the collision. Mitchell was doing Ok, but he didn't run with the same urgency that I've seen in the past. Robertson was looking good in the early drills, but about halfway through I saw him sitting on the bench with his head in his hands. After a while, he took off his shoulder pads and walked around with a slight limp. He appeared to be either stunned or in a great amount of pain. I never saw anyone attend to him or take him to the training table. Kerona Henderson was his usual battering ram self. He spent the whole practice dealing out punishment and making me glad that it wasn't me trying to tackle him. I hope that the coaching staff has some FB running plays in their play book. This guy could keep a defense honest with a few runs up the middle every game. * Joshua Moldonado, continues to be a lot of fun to watch. He's fast, fearless, and he finds the holes/seams very well. If Robertson is faster than him, it would be just barely. When I left, he was still flinging himself at the defense in the "dig-ourselves-out-of-the-goal-line" drills....and making some pretty good runs. It's funny to watch him get behind a lineman and hide before he makes his move. RB's will put their hand on the linemans back and slightly push before they make their move. Joshua reaches slightly up to put his hand on the lineman's back. that's all I can remember at this point. * Played at (Garland) Sachse HS (Mustangs). Their first year of varsity play was 2004 (District 11-5A). Was offensive player of the year for the team in 2004.
  6. good one!
  7. Well, I didn't report everything that I saw......like those two UFO's........
  8. Anyone who is thinking of attending practice needs to know that the practice will be held at Fouts today.......3:00.
  9. Even if I'm making them up? ........
  10. Well, when someone asks about something, they tend to want an answer to their question, and not a commercial for something else. I'm wondering why greenjoe is making the assumption that Eagechick03 is not a mean green club member.

  12. If I have been negative about anything these last two years, it's mainly been about the coaching......and the defensive cratering.....and our OCC record. I like spring ball. Everyone seems to have more energy, plus you get to see the new "hopefuls" out there. I'm a sucker for walk-on stories. But then, as a North Texas fan, I've always backed the "underdog".
  13. I would give my "knucklehead" vote to the ones who payed him 12mil+.
  14. I'll buy one of these "as illustrated". This is a great opportunity to get some North Texas gear, and get a choice in the matter. From what Rick tells me, this will be available in Chrome or Green ("powder coated"). The prices that are being speculated on are very reasonable.
  15. Don't we already have a QB coach with an "attitude"?
  16. I decided to go up and watch yesterday's practice. The team practiced in helmets and shoulder pads only. Here are a few of my impressions. I didn't stay for the whole practice, so illuvius32 might add/fill with his own comments/observations QB Didn't see much of Daniel Maeger or Matt Phillips except in warm-ups. I mainly watched Steve Prince (#5) and W. Wilson (#8). Prince Physically, Prince is slightly taller than Philllips and Wilson. He has a good arm, but his release on short passes is a bit too deliberate and takes a little too much time. Of course, this might be because he's a bit distracted by learning a new system. His best pass (yesterday anyway) was his long ball. I saw him under pressure once and he seemed a bit flustered and dumped the ball a bit too soon. He ran once. He has pretty average speed and make ok yardage on his scramble, but he got mugged on the tackle. Again, he's learning a new system. Wilson The smallest (but not by much) QB out there today. Probably the fastest QB that I've ever seen at North Texas. He's working on his throwing mechanics and has a strong arm (the long ball was his best). I'd say that if he keeps developing, he'll be pretty close to Maeger's accuracy....maybe better (Phillips still has the better arm of all of them). When he takes off, he is very confident in his running ability and he's very good at following his blockers. When he makes the decision to run, he tucks the ball under his arm and RUNS. Again, I've never seen a QB at North Texas this fast. OL I'm excited about this group....especially Ajani Banks (#54). This guy is a LOAD and this guy can MOVE. The other "usual suspects" were out there, and the only other person that I noticed was a lineman wearing #69. He was running with the 2nd team and looked to be about 6'5" X 285.....maybe 290. If he continues to develop, he should add a lot of back-up to the OL. (That's assuming of course, that the coaching staff will start playing back-ups in situations other than injuries to starters.) WR Good looking group....although none of them caught a long pass thrown yesterday. I'm intriqued by a walk-on who is wearing #27. Besides his number, he looks like the second coming of John Love. He's very quick and (like John Love) looks like he could get a lot of YAC (yards after catch). #21 (Fernandez) looked like he had a lot of potential (tall and fast), and there was another walk-on who was wearing #83 who looked like he might have something as well. TE The new guy from Kilgore is a LOAD. He's wearing #85 (AA's old number) and he's every bit as big as AA. I only saw him in blocking situations and he seemed to move pretty well. DL Thomas is back and he was keeping two or more blockers busy on almost every play. And (as Illuvius32 pointed out) he didn't give any ground to them. I saw Burruss (#89) out there. Didn't that guy break his forearm? If so, this guy is one tough dude! You really can't watch the defense practice without spending most of your time watching Bliel coach the guys. Illuvius is right, this guy is a teacher/coach. I spent more time watching him than watching the defensive players. The DB's were looking pretty good in practice. On the passing drills, they were covering the WR's to the point that there were no long balls completed. Not while I was watching anyway. RB Walk-ons #39 Molvanado (sp?) from Sachce(sp?), and James Thokey #34 from Dallas (First Baptist Academy) thru an Oklahoma college, to here. Molvanado says that he is a freshman walk-on. Thokey says that he is a Junior. Thokey said that he was moved from Safety to FB. He looks pretty much like a FB. Neither of these guys may make it past spring, but in the case of Molvanado it won't because of a lack of effort. Molvanado is small (maybe smaller than Robertson..who wasn't out there yesterday) RB but that kid is fearless.....and fast. On one play he was given the ball on an off-tackle play and disappeared into a huge mass of players. He suddenly re-appeared and took-off around the other side. He seems to have only one speed and that is "missle-launch". It's like watching a smaller James Mitchell.....but a step faster. Ja-Mo was out there. It's 2004 again (hopefully without the hammy situation)...nuff said. Devin Cox looked like he has never been moved to defense for two years. He is a very natural runner with great vision. If we lined up to play Texas tomorrow, it would be (IMHO) up in the air if he or James Mitchell would back-up Ja-Mo. Cox has the edge in natural running ability. Kerona Henderson looks like the starter at FB. Let's put it this way. I would not want to be the one who gets in his way when he's at full speed....or half speed for that matter. Illuvius32 stayed for the whole practice, and may want to add comments.
  17. Not me. I'm tired of the "12 volt" coaching system that we've had for so long. I'm ready for most of the coaches to be wired for "220".
  18. Well, FWIW he was listed on the 05 roster as wearing #73.....of course, so was Drew DuBose. But since Chris Miller #52, Jason May #64, Ephraim Patterson #69, and Robbie Vanderslice #77 are all gone, Bryan could have decided (as players often do) that he liked any of those numbers better.
  19. Well Ramone, I make my comments toward a whole group, and you are the one that reacts. My comments weren't directed at you. You're not the only "reporter" out there. Mr. Vito gets paid to cover NT and he didn't seem to know. If I had been out there here's how the conversation would have gone. I would have said "Dang! who is that #5 out there throwing the ball? Then, someone would have said "well, Cullen Mills has been wearing #5 for a couple of years". Then I would have said "Cullen Mills? hasn't he graduated by now?"
  20. A few years ago, an "unknown" QB was walking on in the spring. FFR Rick and I just walked up and asked him his name and what school he attended. I don't understand why #5's identity is still somewhat of a mystery after a week of practice.
  21. Speaking of Vidal Carlin, I seem to remember that he was a JUCO transfer. Does anyone have any information on this? I know that John Love was a JUCO transfer.....and probably one of our most successful ones at that.
  22. If it was John Love, then the QB was Vidal Carlin.
  23. Jim, I keep telling you, if you leave then you're letting them (the athletic dept) off the hook. Keep participating and make their lives miserable. Right now the only thing that your declaration is possibly doing is causing some of the employees of the North Texas athletic dept to do their version of the Snoopy "Happy Dance". ........as well as some of the regular posters on this board.
  24. Yep.
  25. Well, this just goes to prove that some people will always need "mature adult supervision"......even when they go off to an institution of higher learning. The real scary thought is how many situations like this are never discovered.....and the culprits are eventually let loose on society....with a college degree in hand.
