  1. I've been hearing rumors for months now that Shawn Early is going to show up to fall camp looking quite different than the last time he was in a North Texas uni. I've even heard that Shawn has been a weight room maniac, and that it was conceivable that he had put on enough muscle that he could even play NT this fall. So now that we're past media day, and everyone has shown up for practice.......what's the story with Mr. Early. Is he back as a LB, or has he morphed into the incredible hulk. Inquiring minds want to know.
  2. Beautiful!
  3. I've not seen this kid play, but FFR says that Tune has great ability, both as an athlete and as a QB. So that means that he'll probably be moved (like Warren was last year) to DB. You know, if Scott Davis had shown up to play this year as a freshman....they'd probably move him to DB.
  4. I'm more interested in DD going after Quinn, than I am Bomar.
  5. Not anymore. http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/sports/colleges/15223704.htm Frogs won't pursue Bomar By JEFF WILSON Star-Telegram Staff Writer TCU football coach Gary Patterson said late Monday that his staff has stopped recruiting Rhett Bomar, the former Oklahoma quarterback who was booted off the Sooners team Wednesday for violating NCAA rules. Patterson said lineman J.D. Quinn, Bomar's roommate who was also involved in a scheme that netted the players money for work they didn't do, also will not be pursued. "I got home, wrote down the pluses and minuses, and I just can't do it," Patterson said. "I feel for the families and want to help them with their options. But TCU isn't an option at this time." Patterson didn't address whether he would pursue the duo if they landed at a junior college or in a lower NCAA division for this season and were eligible for Division I-A play in 2007. "Right now, I'm not going to think about that," he said. His focus is fully back on getting the Horned Frogs ready for their Sept. 3 season opener at Baylor. Patterson confirmed that the recent speculation, which focused mostly on Bomar, had become a distraction, and he addressed the situation with the team after a two-hour practice Monday. Bomar and TCU seem to be a nice match on the field. Bomar rebounded from a slow start to rally Oklahoma to an 8-4 record last season, and his potential is one of the reasons the Sooners were considered a contender for the national championship. Patterson said last week that he had a scholarship available for a quarterback after former backup Chad Huffman left the Frogs to pursue professional baseball. Huffman was expected to back up starter Jeff Ballard this season and possibly become the starter in 2007. As the roster stands now, a sophomore or redshirt freshman will be the starter next year. Bomar and Quinn had been contacted by TCU, Patterson said, but neither had been on campus. Bomar, from Grand Prairie, and Quinn, from Garland, are sophomores who could have two years of eligibility remaining if they resume Division I-A football next season. "We've known both of the families," said Patterson, the 2005 coach of the year in the Mountain West Conference. "We wanted to help them through this troubled time." Patterson said last week that a decision on whether to offer either player a scholarship would include high-ranking TCU officials, including Chancellor Victor Boschini. But Patterson said he made his decision without input from the chancellor. In addition to violating NCAA rules, Bomar and Quinn have had recent brushes with the law. Bomar pleaded guilty in May to being a minor in possession of alcohol, and Quinn was arrested in November on suspicion of drunken driving. However, both were in good academic standing when they were dismissed from the Sooners football team. By ending his pursuit of Bomar and Quinn, Patterson is also putting an end to a situation that could escalate into a major distraction for the Frogs. He said a courtship could last two or three weeks. Classes for the fall semester begin Aug. 21, and Bomar and Quinn would need to be enrolled by then so that they could have a full academic year without football and satisfy NCAA transfer rules between Division I-A programs. Kyle Brennan, TCU's director of compliance, said the Frogs could have signed Bomar and Quinn to scholarships even though both have no NCAA eligibility. The players, Brennan said, can receive aid while pursuing their reinstatement with the NCAA. To do that, the minimum standard requires them to repay the money they received from Big Red Sports/Imports in Norman, Okla. Even then, though, there are no guarantees for reinstatement. In the end, the questions surrounding their dismissal from Oklahoma made bringing either player to Fort Worth too great a risk for Patterson to take. "I love the kids. I love the families. We recruited them out of high school," Patterson said. "But at this point in time, we just can't do it." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jeff Wilson, 817-390-7953 jwilson@star-telegram.com
  6. “I know what I want and I want to help the team out in any way I can. Well, as far as I'm concerned, this young man passes the first test for "future all-conference player" with flying colors.
  7. Talent-wise, we have much less margin for error than B-12 schools.
  8. So who do we have left at the DL position now? I'm guessing that Mr. Santiago will definitely be put at the DL position.
  9. Jack, you and I seem to evalute players almost exactly the same way.......it's kind of scary. My assessment of the QB's is exactly the same as yours......including your concern about Mr. Meager.
  10. EXACTLY!
  11. I didn't have a problem with my flag. I did however wonder what sort of "ice cooler" we were being given as a MGC gift. I thought that it looked rather odd for a soft-sided cooler, so I looked up the web-site for the product. Here is the link. http://www.bagselite.com/products_icentote.html I thought that it looked like a wine bottle cooler. And sure enough, that's what it is. I wonder, does that mean that we can start bringing wine into the games?
  12. I want the starting QB to be the one who has the most confidence in himself, and in this team. I also want the starting QB to be the one that the team has the most confidence in as well. Because when that happens, the team will make the extra effort to protect him. I know that it irritates some people when you talk about the intangibles of leadership and confidence in the QB position. But to me, those are the most important qualities that you can have in a QB. And after you've put a QB out on the field who is confident in himself, and is a leader, then it's the coaches job to give him a viable offensive scheme to work with.
  13. I couldn't find anything outside of a North Texas football story about him, when I did a google search.
  14. It's my understanding that they make them buy a season ticket package before they can buy tickets to the UT/NT game.
  15. Looks like one answer to the "what do we do about the loss of Charley Brown" question.
  16. OHMYGOD! I completely forgot that I was going to run this decision by you before I went through with it................ DAMN! Now.....look at the avatar.....really look at it.
  17. Looks like a pretty well respect coach is interested. http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/15206603.htm Patterson interested in Bomar By JEFF WILSON Star-Telegram Staff Writer TCU coach Gary Patterson said he would be interested in adding former Oklahoma quarterback Rhett Bomar to the Horned Frogs' roster , but conceded much needs to take place before Bomar could join another team. "Who in the United States wouldn't be interested in Rhett Bomar as a player?" Patterson said. "We have question marks. You need to have patience in these situations. "You'd like for him to come up and take a look at the place. We have a scholarship available, and we have an opening at quarterback." Chad Huffman was expected to be the backup to senior starting quarterback Jeff Ballard this season as a junior, but left the team after being selected in the second round of the amateur draft by the San Diego Padres. Next season, TCU will start a sophomore or redshirt freshman if the roster remains as is. Bomar and his roommate, offensive lineman J.D. Quinn, were dismissed from the Sooners earlier this week after an internal investigation revealed they received excessive payments for their work at a Norman-area car dealership. Each will have to repay the money they illegally received in the form of charitable donations, then apply for reinstatement from the NCAA. Any player who transfers to another Division I-A team is required by the NCAA to sit out an academic year. Bomar will have two years of eligibility remaining if his eligibility is restored by the NCAA. But even if their eligibility is restored, that doesn't make Bomar and Quinn locks for TCU. Patterson, who said he also has interest in Quinn, said more information is needed from Oklahoma and the NCAA. Also, Bomar pleaded guilty to being a minor in possession of alcohol in March, and Quinn was arrested in November on suspicion of drunken driving. Both were in good academic standing before their dismissals. "With any young man that comes to TCU, it isn't what the head football coach thinks," Patterson said. "It's what the university thinks, starting with the chancellor." Neither Bomar nor his father, Jerry, returned phone calls Friday, but Texas A&M-Commerce issued a release that said the football team has asked Oklahoma for permission to talk to Bomar about transferring. Quinn's father, Jim, said his son would be interested in TCU. Jim Quinn played linebacker at TCU in the 1970s. Defense starts strong Seven-on-seven is a drill for the offense. Quarterbacks learn to read coverages and receivers refine their route-running. But TCU's defense shined during the seven-on-seven portion of the Frogs' first practice of camp. It's not usual at any school to find the defense ahead of the offense early in camp. But the defense was proud of its performance, especially after showing only one coverage. "Our goal is just to stop them, don't let them get too many yards," safety Marvin White said. "If we get an interception, it means we won. That's a big lift for us, knowing it's an offensive drill." gofrogs.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jeff Wilson, 817-390-7953 jwilson@star-telegram.com
  18. I would guess that close to the same number of fans attended the 88 game with Texas. And we were 1-AA!
  19. "Running for you life" has been part of the NT QB job description for a long time.....too long as a matter of fact.
  20. Wow, you sure know how to sugar coat it.
  21. That is the face of the original Scrappy (circa 50's/60's). I'll post the rest of him soon. I chose him because his expression clearly says I DIDN'T COME HERE TO LOSE!
  22. I thought that Cox showed some pretty good moves at the beginning of spring. He then proceeded to spend the rest of the spring trying to prove that he could run over people. His favorite target for this seemed to be Mr. Cotton #24. I would describe Evan Robertson's speed as "outstanding". IMHO, Kerona Henderson needs some running plays. And I don't mean the first game or so of the season, and then nothing thereafter. I think that Josh Maldonado could contribute on kick-offs.
  23. "Adding another wide receiver to the lineup could be an intriguing option." It will be an intriguing option if only to see if the current coaching staff can demonstrate some originality and flexibility in their coaching style.
  24. Actually (IMHO) we had plenty of answers for him (our swarming defense). We just didn't anticipate that the Texas QB was so "mobile" and would make some big plays with his feet. To me, (other than the referee's gifts) the big plays that their QB made in the second half was the difference.
  25. Some of my thoughts. One of the best games, preparation wise, that I've ever seen North Texas play. North Texas was outweighed by Texas, but there was not ONE player on that North Texas team that was the least bit intimidated by the Texas team. Every North Texas player that stepped out on that field was both eager and ready to knock the crap out of anyone wearing orange....and they often did. That night, they were truely the MEAN GREEN. Clearly, every North Texas player and coach was wearing their "I DIDN'T COME HERE TO LOSE" t-shirt under their uniforms. This game should be shown to every North Texas team at the beginning of fall practice to illustrate the intensity with which they should play each game.
