  1. I had my "bell rung" one time in football practice, but that's about it. I don't know about the different grades of concussions, but I know enough to be very concerned about someone who has headaches and nausea for a week. I've read somewhere (and correct me if I'm wrong.......as if I have to tell this board to do that!) that concussions have a cumulative effect. And that at some point, each successive concussion is easier to get. Again, I'm no Doctor, but I'm very concerned about young Mr. Meager.
  2. About a year ago, I was on vacation and was filling up next to a guy in what looked like a 28' motor home. As I recall, he said that he got something like 6 mpg. But his motor home wasn't a diesel. He also said that his tank held around 75 gallons.
  3. Could it have been your gall bladder acting up? Regardless, I'm very relieved. Glad you were able to go back home.
  4. Not to worry. The DMN Cowboy beat writer was being interviewed by Joe Trahan on Channel 8 tonight, and he made same joke.
  5. Emmitt, in the future when you share your professional adventures with us, please don't type the word "shoot" in the first sentence. Especially when you mean chute. I'm already concerned enough about your safety and well being without seeing the word "shoot" in one of your posts........
  6. Headaches and nausea for a week? I continue to be worried about this young man.
  7. UNT FOOTBALL NOTESTransfer QB pushing for start By Troy Phillips Star-Telegram Staff Writer DENTON - Today's scrimmage marking the end of North Texas' fall camp should provide clues as to which quarterback could start Sept. 2 against Texas in Austin. In only 10 days, third-stringer Woody Wilson has made the competition a virtual dead heat. Wilson was slowed early in camp with a sprained knee. He missed UNT's first scrimmage Aug. 16 but has performed well since. Projected starter Daniel Meager remained out Friday with a concussion that has left him nauseous all week, and he's expected to miss today's scrimmage, leaving Wilson and Matt Phillips to battle for the starting spot. Freshman Nathan Tune probably will redshirt this season. "We know what Daniel can do," UNT coach Darrell Dickey said. "In fact, until he got his bell rung, he was having a very good camp." Since his spring-ball debut after transferring from Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College, Wilson has closed the gap, Dickey said. "The coaches give us equal opportunities," Wilson said. "If a person is sitting out, it gives us more chances, but the coaches know what we're all capable of, so it evens out." Good news, bad news Receiver Johnny Quinn is expected to return to practice Monday after having surgery on his left hand. For games, he'll be fitted with a glove-type apparatus that shouldn't limit thumb or finger movement, Darrell Dickey said. Outside linebacker Phillip Graves (knee sprain) will be out for the Texas game and perhaps longer. His replacements at UNT's "rover" spot are inexperienced. Junior Lawrence Brown has played only special teams in college, and sophomore Germaine Dawson is a former walk-on. "Phillip will probably be the one that we have to do the most scrambling to replace," Dickey said. Briefly Sun Belt Conference officials will brief UNT players and coaches today on instant replay, which the conference will use this season. UNT will simulate replay and coaches' challenges during today's scrimmage. Defensive back Aaron Weathers blocked two field-goal attempts in Friday's morning practice. Weathers blocked a field goal against Troy last season. True freshman Draylen Ross of Diamond Hill-Jarvis continues working at tight end instead of his natural position, defensive end. Ross is a strong redshirt candidate. Special teams protection and coverage remain high on UNT's list of concerns as the season draws near, Darrell Dickey said. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Troy Phillips, 817-390-7760 tphillips@star-telegram.com Ok, once again I'm certainly no Doctor, but a concussion that causes throwing up and nausea for a week would cause me great concerned.
  8. Keep in mind that when North Texas built Fouts (original capacity 20.5K) and opened it in the fall of 1952, the fall student enrollment was 4,449.* The cost of Fouts Field was..........$764,981.* If we built as "optimistically" as they did back then, we would have to build something like a 100K+ stadium. *Source, "The Story of North Texas", by James L. Rogers, pages 344 & 345. published 1965.
  9. The number of seats has been decreased from 85,500 to 50,000 to make for a more intimate setting Intimate? 50K?....and we're talking about our new stadium being 30K! Sports world-wise, I sometimes feel so......third county.
  10. Well, just calling in and telling him that it's our expectation that he try and beat the hell out of Texas would embarrass him. He NEVER says that its' his intent to go out and win OCC games. I DIDN'T COME HERE TO LOSE is a totally foreign concept to him.
  11. My sister went to North Texas in the fall of 1961. She bought a mascot sticker for her car,(which is the avatar that I now use). She told me that the name of the mascot was "Scrappy". I don't now how long that image of Scrappy existed before the fall of 1961, but it's my favorite image of Scrappy. I wish they would get rid of that current image of Scrappy-the-parrot.
  12. Please make a copy if possible. I remember the "original" version very well. When Winslow changed it (dumbed it down), I thought it was an insult to the Music Dept, and the fine reputation of our Music school......as well as a cavalier attitude toward one of our few traditions.
  13. Would it have been too difficult for them to say "a student dressed in a Eagle costume?". Maybe they don't think that students and humans are the same thing. BTW, I don't remember anyone dressed in an Eagle costume during the times that I attended homecoming games during the 60's. The first time I saw someone dressed in an Eagle costume was during the Hayden Fry era.
  14. Their daily work-outs are on a grass field. They only scrimmage at Fouts.
  15. So you weren't into toga parties in college?,,,,,,,,
  16. This isn't a pyramid scheme is it?.......
  17. Did you also have surgery....with pins installed?
  18. So am I. I'm certainly no Doctor, but the fastest that I could ever imagine his hand healing would be in six weeks. And I'll add this addendum. If people think that a one-handed Johnny Quinn is a better option than most of the other WR on the team, then they need to get a grip....no pun intended. We have some fine athletes on this team, who I believe will do their best to rise to the occasion.
  19. I would like to suggest that you not hold your breath while you're waiting for that one.....unless you just enjoy passing out.

  21. 1. This sounds like what happened when we hired Hayden Fry. 2. This sounds like a vote for more and/or better promotions people. addendum: I've thought about this a little while and I'll have to disagree with you a little about hiring an "established vs up-and-coming" coach. My feeling is that we need to hire someone who is "up-and-coming" much like Rice did. The problem is the person doing the hiring. Our most recent experience (the last 30 years) has been that we are terrible at hiring coaches, with two exceptions, Hayden Fry and Corky Nelson. Who was responsible for making those hires? I don't mind "up-and-coming" coaches passing through North Texas on their way to the big time, as long as they have moved us up a peg or so (or 10) in the pecking order before they move on. Eventually we will be the ultimate destination, rather than the "way station". How do we do this? I suggest that we get an expert to develop a "profile" of the type of coach that North Texas needs, and use this profile in every hiring situation that takes place in the future. The profile can be adjusted as the "culture" at North Texas starts changing. We need to ask specific questions about how a coach will work to help North Texas change it's apathetic "culture". To me, the profile of the perfect coach for North Texas "at this time" would be pretty much a "Hayden Fry" or the new coach at Rice. Any coach hired here would need to fully understand the "culture of apathy/inferority" at North Texas and have a viable plan for working in this environment, as well as a viable plan for recruiting players to come here. IMHO you cannot scrape together a bunch of money and hire a High Profile coach to come here and change things. Most established high profile coaches had their successes in established programs, and they didn't have to deal with helping to change the "culture" of the University. I think that that is one of the most difficult things for most coaches to deal with and/or realize when they come here. IMHO Hayden was able to deal with it, because he lived next door to us for so many years, and he had a pretty good understanding of how North Texas was perceived.... and how we perceived ourselves. He was able to hit the ground running from day one to start making "cultural changes". Corky Nelson worked well at North Texas because he used to be a DL coach under Rod Rust and had a very good understanding of the "culture" here. I remember when we hired Corky, my first comment was "well, at least he knows what he's getting himself into". fire away folks
  22. The first time that I was at practice (last Wednesday) I noticed him suited up and asked a reporter who that was. The response was "Oh, I think he must be a walk-on". When I was up there on Saturday, someone mentioned that Kail had looked pretty good in practice, and they were making early comparisons to him and Evan Cardwell. Someone said that they thought that Kail was a bit quicker than Cardwell at the same stage of development (coming in as a freshman).
  23. Jim, you and I are very much on the same page regarding the long term issues that have effected our University. Since the University cannot spend any of it's money on a stadium, I am curious to know where you would recommend that the University make it's biggest investment (s) in the athletic department. Promotions? more fundraisers? I also agree with you regarding the University having more "green blooded" staff and administrators who not only have a professional stake, but an emotional stake as well in the University succeeding. To me a North Texas graduate would have a clearer picture about what their challenge(s) would be, and would waste less time being shocked and puzzled about what appears to be our "culture of apathy". Most of the time, North Texas graduates are not apathetic per se, they're just afraid to be laughed at by UT & A$M graduates and/or big school bandwagon wanabee's (who are usually the ones with the biggest mouths), for admitting that they are North Texas graduates/fans.
  24. Interesting birth control method. Whenever anyone asked my wife if we were going to have another child, she would just smile and say "we have an agreement. I'll have the first child, and if he wants any more,.... he can have the rest."
  25. One son, age 25, who is a North Texas graduate (with honors) and is currently in the Fort Worth Fire Dept. academy. I'm still working on him being a more active North Texas fan.
