Well, if it was up to me, I would ask the Band (or portions of it) to have an impromptu pep rally in the middle of the campus around Wednesday or Thursday....and make sure the dance team is there.

FW*Telegram Meager Might Be Back as starter
SilverEagle replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
Way to go Mr. Dawson! I hope all our other back-ups step up like this! -
Here is another "universal" stat/adage to keep in mind. It's always been accepted amongst coaches and sports writers that the greatest progress/adjustments that a team makes is between games one and two. So, in theory, North Texas and SMU are going to show up Saturday looking the most improved that they can this season. Should be interesting.

You can absolutely do that. They will have your tickets at "will call". I've never had any problems purchasing tickets like this in the past.

DMN DD looking for consistency from QB's

First the weather, now the band buz!

I totally agree. I've never heard any other fanfare like that one. And I've watched a lot of HS and College bands perform. I was sad when it was not used any longer. Just another change (along with dumbing down the fight song) that was brought about by Dr. Winslow. -
A local (D/FW) High School uses this ( or a similar) system. Keeping It Cool on the Football Field Special air-conditioned shoulder pads may protect players from heat stroke SATURDAY, Feb. 21 (HealthDayNews) -- Football shoulder pads that can be hooked up to a portable air-conditioning unit when players are standing on the sidelines may protect gridiron athletes from dangerous heat-related illnesses. The shoulder pads, created by researchers at the University of Florida's (UF) College of Medicine, have a port in the back. A hose plugs into the port and circulates cool air through a series of ventilation channels in the shoulder pads. The cool air is pumped from a portable air compressor and a cooler/dryer unit that can provide air that's as cool as 60 degrees F. Jacksonville University players tested the shoulder pads during preliminary research and said they were refreshed by the rush of cool air around the chest, back and shoulders. "I can't tell you exactly how much heat the system eliminates, but I think every bit helps," system co-developer Dr. Nikolaus Gravenstein, a UF professor and chairman of anesthesiology, says in a prepared statement. "This is a supplement to drinking adequate fluids and getting proper athletic conditioning," Gravenstein says. Heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses are a threat to football players, who play in conditions where field temperatures sometimes reach 120 degrees F. "It's very difficult to cool (football players) externally. Blowing on them with cold air or fans from the outside is made largely ineffective," Gravenstein says. Field tests to determine how much the shoulder pads help reduce core body temperature will continue this spring.

I think that sportsmanship has little to do with it. They just have resources that they're going to use, and if they are not required by the NCAA to offer it to opponents, then they're not. I remember when video taping machines were first available to the public. Texas Tech used it on their sidelines to help their players see how to make corrections in their technique. Shortly after that, the NCAA banned the use of it for everyone as it gave the rich schools an unfair advantage. Unless I'm wrong about this, I think that their use (video taping) is still banned. So I have to wonder how "water cooled jackets" fit in to this situation.

Post of the week. -
You (and others) don't understand. They all wore Khaki shorts. It's just that some of them were a slightly different shade/style, which easily happens when everyone goes out and gets their own. That sort of thing happens (the different shades) unless everyone went to the same store to buy their shorts. I still find it sad that our band only has one uniform option at this time.

I assume that if this nice weather continues into Saturday, then I'm sure the band will be in their "sharp" mostly black uni's. As I said above, I was pleased that the band made the decision to go casual at the UT game. If they had even tried to wear those (mostly) black uni's they would have all died of a heat stroke. I think that the band made a great effort to promote spirit. I'm just very sorry that they had to cobble together their own casual uni's for the game. If they need to go casual in future games, I hope they can advise us in a timely manner so that we can look at some sort of fund raising to help them look more consistent. Again, the (alleged) behavior of the three band members is unacceptable. If I had seen it myself, I might have gone over and given them my best "Seth Bullock" look.
-
I was sitting right next to the band. In fact I was sitting so close that I couldn't see what all of the band was doing. Had I seen the above described behavior, I would have gone over and said something to them, as well as the director of the band. That is unacceptable behavior. I was pleased to see that the Band was wearing shorts, but I was somewhat dismayed to see that they obviously had to fend for themselves and provide their own. Naturally that resulted in a less than consistent look amongst the band members. I too would have preferred that they had worn green t-shirts. Also, if I had known that they were going to wear shorts and t-shirts, I would have proposed a gomeangreen fund raising event to buy them baseball caps to wear. This is just another sad example of the funding differences between UT and UNT. Our band deserves much better than this.

I certainly hope that you're wrong about that. The $15.00 is for general admission tickets. My tickets show $25.00 for the SMU game. Personally, I think they should have charged more. I certainly hope that there are no more alumni who's expectations about ticket prices are still stuck back in the days of $8.00 and $6.00 for reserved seats. Otherwise, we're going to end up like the Israelites who wandered the desert for 40 years until their disobedient/disbelieving generation had died off.

DRC Full article..DD ready to scale back game plan
SilverEagle replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
I can't believe what I'm reading. He thinks that running non-stop against 8 and 9 man defensive fronts is going to be the answer to their running game problems? Let me be the first to comment on this NEUROTIC NOTION..*. NO AMOUNT OF TECHNIQUE AND/OR REPITITION IS GOING TO OVERCOME 8 OR 9 (OR POSSIBLY MORE) MEN IN THE BOX. IT'S BEEN TRIED OVER AND OVER AGAIN, AND IT DOESN'T WORK *(from the Wikipedia web-site) Neurotic tendencies are common and may manifest themselves as depression, acute or chronic anxiety, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, phobias, and even personality disorders, such as borderline personality disorder or obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. It has perhaps been most simply defined as a "poor ability to adapt to one's environment, an inability to change one's life patterns, and the inability to develop a richer, more complex, more satisfying personality." -
Survive another year? Is that the kind of life that DD wants for himself? Surely not.
-
Here's another question along the same lines..."If we barely beat SMU this week, will we consider that enough of an improvement to want to stay with the same coaching staff/philosophy?". When DD talked to the alumni at the Friday night gathering (and all things considered, he did a pretty good job) he made a comment to our new president. He said "when you're about half way through watching the game tomorrow, keep in mind that we're getting 1/2 million for it". Ok, then my question is this "How much (donor-wise and alumni interest/support-wise and media-lack-of-respect-wise) does a humiliating ass-whipping cost us?". I'm no expert number cruncher, but I'd be willing to guess that the negative publicity that we got (and continue to get) from being UT, OU, and LSU's BIMBO has cost us much more than 1/2 million.
-
First of all, Eagle Man, welcome to the board. Second of all, are you a student or alumni?
-
I voted "sea of green". I've gone to UT and OU games and the thing that I envy them the most for is how their fans ALL show up wearing the colors.....the same colors! North Texas fans, even the ones who make trips to out of town games, still don't consistently wear green. And when they do, it's just a patchwork of various shades of green. One day I hope to walk into Fouts (or the new stadium) and see a sea of green, the same way that I see all crimson (OU) or all burnt orange(UT).

Best, a lengthy drive for a TD. J. Chapman (#90) did great in the first half too many tackles by the DB's I didn't get a sunstroke I didn't get into an altercation with either a UT fan or.........anyone else. Worst TACKLING, why did our defense think that just hitting J Charles and S. Young hard would knock them down? Those guys get hit by B-12 defenses all the time and don't go down easily. DOESN'T ANYONE AT NT PRACTICE THAT OLD FASHIONED TECHNIQUE CALLED WRAPPING UP, ANY MORE?
-
I think you're talking about the anti-concussion helmet. Riddell makes it. Here's the link. http://www.riddell.com/RevFacts.htm

And just in case anyone is curious, the final score was North Texas Teacher's College 11, the Sammy Baugh-led Hornfrogs 28. Jack Sisco was our coach then, and he obviously wasn't in awe of the mighty TCU.

Here is my favorite comment from a UT fan about that game. The other thing I recall about the game - NT had a 3rd and veeeery long, deep in their own end, and as they came out of the huddle, the QB stopped to tie his shoe, a good 10 yards or more behind the line. They snapped it long to him, and he quick-kicked. Completely unexpected, got a great roll, and put Texas way back. There was a flag on the play though, and it came back, so 3rd and even longer. They huddled up deep again, and the QB stopped to tie his shoe again, and the whole crowd groaned, thinking how stupid it was to try to catch us by surprise again... except this time, it was snapped, the safeties ran deep to cover the punt, and the QB threw it, for a first down. Got a huge roar of approval from the crowd. We (Texas) did win 17-14, not exactly impressive. And THAT folks was what it was like watching a Hayden Fry coached team.

I agree with that assessment of Mr. Mitchell. I'm also surprised at Devin Cox. I was just sure that he would continue to develop this fall.

FW*Telegram Playmaker JaMO great article
SilverEagle replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
I saw him get "lit up" in the last NO bowl. I'm hoping that Toby can duplicate his Ja-Mo hit on Charles or Young.
