According to one of the stories about the game, the RB who scored two of their TD's (Walker) is their second string RB.

Chris, I've been wondering something lately. If you are working on your Doctorate in Psychology, I would think that that would take a lot of your time. Unless of course, studying the dynamics of a sports message board makes good (and new) material for a dissertation. Or, you could just be a brillant student, who enjoys the interaction of North Texas sports fans. Just wondering.

Actually the team pulled us (and DD) out of his rubble.

I'm terribly sorry, but that happens to be my job..........

FW*Telegram MG offense running on empty
SilverEagle replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm going to have to disagree with his assessment. I think that the running game makes a nice rhythmic THUMP THUMP sound as it consistently and mindlessly bangs it's head against those 8 and 9 man brick walls that are consistently being put up by our opponents. -
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing coach. Our team was getting it's butt kicked in someone else's crappy stadium this last saturday. It didn't seem to bother the Tulsa players and/or fans that the team was playing in a crappy stadium. They were too busy enjoying the win. And it obviously didn't bother the CUSA officials about Tulsa's crappy stadium either.

First of all, I'm not joining the discussion about "fire-or-no-fire" DD. But the above statement caused me to wonder about something. I don't know about football coaches at state Universities, but I do know that state employees, as part of their job descriptions, have a phrase that basically says "you can be assigned to other duties as needed". That means that despite your specific assignment and/or skills, the administrators can assign you to do whatever they want. Which includes being assigned (or re-assigned) to do a job that they know you wouldn't accept and/or stay in. For instance, your specific job might be to do on-sight inspections of daycare centers and monitor their compliance with licensing standards in the D/FW area. You could be re-assigned to conduct child abuse investigations in the Bonham/Sherman area. That would entail doing a job that you were not currently trained to do, and it would require you to drive, on a daily basis, about 75 or 80 miles away from where you are currently assigned and/or live. I seem to recall that Matt Simon was assigned other duties when DD was hired. Since coaches regularly use agents to negotiate their contracts these days, I'm wondering if the agents for coaches who are hired at state Universities try to exclude the "and other duties as needed" part of the job description. Or, it could be that coaches at state Universities no longer have job descriptions in their contracts that have any of the same phrases that state employees have. Just wondering.

Great podcast guys. With one possible exception....."If we can strap SilverEagle in his seat for the next home game?!?!"

With the right player at the QB position and the right balance of plays around it, the zone-read stretch play can be devastating. The main ingredients you need are a legit running threat at QB, a quick running back, and a well coordinated offensive line. This is the main thing that I can comment on in your presentation. We have two QB's who are legitimate running threats(Wilson and Meager), and at least two quick RB's. It seems that our OL struggles every year to get coordinated. I don't understand that still being such a big issue this year, since just about everyone on the current O-line started at one time or another last year, and they've been together since the spring.

Jerry Moore coached here in 79 and 80. His total record here was 11-11. He didn't take us to any bowl games and his biggest win in those two years was 29-10 over Memphis. Texas Tech hired him away from us to be their head coach. DD has a 25 conference win streak and four bowl appearances. Who has tried to hire DD away from us?

New sports Bar/restaurant in Denton
SilverEagle replied to BonfireBrian's topic in Mean Green Football
If you mean the Texas Pick-up, then no it's not. That land was purchased and turned into apartments.....or possibly dorms. I've always thought that a North Texas themed bar and grill would be a great idea. The Texas Pick-up was decorated with a lot of North Texas stuff, but it wasn't totally North Texas. Since you can't sell beer and/or wine to the majority of students, it would need to be very near, but not inside the campus, in a pretty high traffic area. Lots of neon. Maybe it could be a microbrewery as well. -
When is Vito Going to Ask a Real Question
SilverEagle replied to UNTLifer's topic in Mean Green Football
Well, I've gotten strong indications from people that know, that if tough questions are presented to DD and his staff, they will shut you out. So you have to be careful. Of course, that's probably true of most coaches. -
When is Vito Going to Ask a Real Question
SilverEagle replied to UNTLifer's topic in Mean Green Football
I have no earthly idea why you think that I would comment on such a situation. I'd either be speechless, or laughing too hard. I'd also be too busy looking for something with which to "enhance" my soda. -
And now for something completely different...
SilverEagle replied to mad dog's topic in Mean Green Football
Well, let's see.. They've never beaten us.....even when we were very crappy(see the 05 season). We cheated them out of a NO bowl appearance (01), when they had a better overall record, and we had a losing record. That year, we chose that game to come alive when we had been "circling the bowl" up to that point. -
Well, here's one theory. North Texas went so long with a "status quo" situation (Odus Mitchell for 21 years) that they didn't have a clue (with the exception of Hayden Fry) about how to hire a new coach. Hayden kind of fell into our laps and I'm not sure who pushed that deal through. But I think that the "old nesters" didn't let that person(s) do the hiring of subsequent coaches after Hayden left. The "old nesters" just weren't ready to be brought up to modern times like Hayden tried to do, and took back the decision making process after he left. With the exception of Corky Nelson, our coaching hires have reflected the cluelessness of our "old nesters". It's kind of like when someone bought a Mercedes diesel 25 or 30 years ago, and drove it for about 1/2 million miles. When you get around to replacing it, you experience severe sticker shock. Plus the negotiation process is much different than 25 or 30 years ago. Whereas, someone who has traded cars every four years or so, is much more......realistic. I don't mind us being a stepping stone for an up and coming coaching prospect who gets hired away from us. I just want the people who identified that coach to be the hiring authority for the subsequent coach(es). After a hiring a series of successful "up and comers", our fan base would be built up enough that we could affort to keep one of the good ones for a while.....but not too long.

...more than likely it will be door #2.

"It’s not that Wilson has done everything right, far from it. He just seems to be the Mean Green’s best hope based on his athleticism and ability to make plays on the move behind a struggling offensive line." IMHO, no OL (ours or anyone else's) is not going to get any better if they think that a QB's "athleticism" is going to bail them out when they have assignment break-downs. Maybe I'm being unrealistic, but any OL should play every down as if their QB is a statue,.....and is made out of crystal.....and there's no replacement QB.

Well, actually he did. UNT offense stalls in Tulsa 12:11 AM CDT on Sunday, September 17, 2006 By BRETT VITO / Denton Record-Chronicle TULSA, Okla. – All the momentum North Texas built last week with a win over area rival SMU all but vanished into a hot and steamy Saturday night at Tulsa's Skelly Stadium. UNT struggled to get going offensively and squandered a solid first-half performance by its defense as Tulsa raced away for a 28-3 win. Colleges SMS: Sports to your phone Colleges blog Tulsa 28, North Texas 3 UNT offense stalls in Tulsa Summary More: UNT The outcome was somewhat of a surprise for UNT, which came into the game with a load of momentum after beating SMU last week. "Anytime you lose, it's disappointing," UNT coach Darrell Dickey said. "We expected to play much better. ... They played better than we did tonight. They coached better than we did." Perhaps the most frustrating thing was the way UNT (1-2) played offensively after scoring 24 points against SMU. The Mean Green expected to build on that performance against Tulsa (2-1) behind quarterback Woody Wilson, who came off the bench to lead UNT to its win over the Mustangs. Wilson made his first career start against Tulsa, while senior wide receiver Johnny Quinn played for the first time this season without a cast on his broken left hand. Neither player provided UNT the spark it needed against Tulsa, which limited the Mean Green to 89 yards of offense. Wilson completed 4-of-5 passes for 37 yards. Running back Jamario Thomas, who had 90 yards against SMU, had just 33 against the Golden Hurricane. Quinn had one catch for 5 yards. "I can't say too much about what happened tonight other than we just have to get better as a team offensively, including myself," Wilson said. UNT's defense provided the offense ample opportunity to take control in the first half. UNT defensive linemen Blake Burruss and Jeremiah Chapman intercepted passes, and the Mean Green held Tulsa scoreless until the final play before halftime. UNT failed to take advantage when it only came away with a 23-yard field goal from Denis Hopovac in the second quarter that gave the Mean Green an early 3-0 lead. "That was the difference," Thomas said. "Anytime our defense gives us chances like that, we expect to put the ball in the end zone." Tulsa took the lead for good with a 13-play, 96-yard drive at the end of the first half that the Golden Hurricane capped with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Paul Smith to tight end Ted Curtis on fourth down on the last play of the half. Tulsa converted three fourth downs on the drive, including one on a penalty after UNT appeared to come up with a drive-killing play. Redshirt freshman defensive back Korey Washington tipped the ball away from tight end Kyle Grooms, but sophomore linebacker Germaine Dawson was flagged for being offside, giving Tulsa a first down at UNT's 9-yard line. DAVID CRENSHAW/AP Tulsa running back pulls away from UNT defensive end Jeremiah Chapman. Chapman had an interception, and UNT held Tulsa to seven points in the first half. The Golden Hurricane took control from there, rattling off 28 unanswered points. Smith threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns. The Mean Green never found a way to answer, despite several opportunities early. "It was a very frustrating night for us, especially offensively," Dickey said. "We came out early, created some opportunities, took advantage of one of them and squandered a few others. ... From then on we couldn't get anything going." Briefly: Sophomore quarterback Daniel Meager saw his first action of the season when he replaced Wilson. He threw for 25 yards on 2-of-6 passing with an interception. ... Freshman tight end Draylen Ross and sophomore linebacker Colt Mahan made the first starts of their careers. Mahan finished with a game-high 10 tackles. ... UNT has not scored an offensive touchdown in the first quarter of 15 straight games. E-mail bvito@dentonrc.com

You mean "works for the type of players our coaches choose to go after". If we are not able to get more talented players to come here, it could be for two reasons.. 1. We have maybe one or two coaches who can evaluate (remember that K-mart had to talk Dickey into offering a "ship" to Johnny Quinn), and recruit. 2. There are many outstanding athletes out there who would give North Texas more serious consideration, but who the hell would want to play in our offensive scheme? And what defensive player wants to come here and spend most of the game out on the field, where he gets exhausted and ends up looking bad.

You better watch it my friend. I got "visited" for much....much less than that.....

The game was actually uglier than the score indicated. The Tulsa offense came out playing liked they believed in what they were doing, and it didn't seem to bother them much when we got two turn-overs at the beginning of the game. Their belief in their offensive system (and their disdain for our offense) was made very clear to everyone when they made the decision to not punt for most of the game. They quick-kicked in their first fourth down situation, but I don't think they punted again until the end of the third quarter or the beginning of the fourth. For the rest of the game, they basically lined up on fourth down and made it clear that either they knew they would always make it, or that they really didn't care if they didn't. Because they knew that their defense would handle us and get the ball back. Our defense fought them very hard, but I have to think that they got a psychological edge on the D, with their no-punting policy. And the offense did exactly what Tulsa was counting on, ......they didn't give the D any help with any sustained drives. They also gave us a huge psychological punch in the stomach when we had them stopped at the four yard line on fourth down, right before half-time. At first, Tulsa came out to kick a FG, but we decided to call a time-out to "ice" their kicker. Tulsa's response? "Your not going to mess with our heads, we'll just go for it" They made it, and their confidence level went through the roof (and it wasn't too far from there to begin with), whilst ours.......never recovered.

...you'd be really sorry about that remark if the interviewer responded "and why is that a weakness?"

November 20th, 1982. I was at that game. It was one my proudest moments as a Mean Green fan. Tulsa was coming in looking to finish the year 10-1 (which it did), and it looked as if a win over North Texas was going to be an automatic. Corky Nelson had other ideas. We eventually lost 38-20, but we certainly made them sweat a lot. Going into the game we basically had nothing on offense. Our QB Rusty Hill was about as mobile as Matt Phillips, and our running game was pretty ineffective. Corky just let it all hang out that game. Rusty Hill came out throwing (61 passes/ 41 completions, still a NT record) and Marvin Walker was his "go-to" guy that day (22 catches, still a record). The amazing thing about Marvin Walkers record receiving day, was that yardage-wise he didn't make the top ten in single game receiving yardage. That was the day that I knew that our coach's attitude was..... I DIDN'T COME HERE TO LOSE!

Gezzz that guy must have really been crazy if he thought that someone would give up a B-10 coaching job to become the Governor of Iowa. Talk about (salary and power/influence-wise) a step down!

I don't think that you can "force sportsmanship" with anti-taunting rules. And I don't think that the NCAA had that in mind. I think what flagging someone for taunting does is to prevent a fight from breaking out.
