  1. If the Green Team OL is a direct reflection of Andry Brewster's coaching and motivational ability, then we need to go ahead and give a certain coach some free time to write his next book. I couldn't believe how fired-up and ready to play that whole group was. Devin Cox was just tearing it up out there, and I don't believe that I saw him lose yardage even one time. ALSO, did anyone notice how much James Mitchell was tearing it up when they gave him the ball? To this day, I still don't know why he hasn't been put in the RB rotation and given the ball. And the shock of the night ......RYAN DAVENPORT catching a bomb for a TD!?!? Can someone tell me what position he was playing? Was it FB, I-B or TE? Regardless, I just LOVE stuff like that. I hope someone caught that on film for him. That has to be the biggest moment of his college career. Too bad it didn't lead to a win. BTW, I think the Green team was taken out because they used up all of their play-book and LaTech was starting to catch on.
  2. How about WE DIDN'T COME HERE TO LOSE!! I can send you the full 50's/60's Scrappy image to put I DIDN'T COME HERE TO LOSE! under.
  3. I'll be out there.
  4. Here is an interesting article that would seem to apply to this subject. Coaches are playing game of make believe By NAKIA HOGAN Star-Telegram Staff Writer SPECIAL TO THE STAR-TELEGRAM/WILLIS KNIGHT Coach Bob Wager has Martin holding down fourth place in 8-5A. More photosThe postgame locker room was usually church-quiet last season. Except for the occasional sniffle of a player struggling to hold in his emotions, nobody said much. It hurt too much to talk. Arlington Bowie senior defensive back D.J. Davis figured there would be plenty of similar Friday night sessions this season. "People were just mad that we weren't winning the last couple years," Davis said. But new coach Kenny Perry has brought about some change, having -- in a flash -- turned the once-moribund Volunteers into playoff contenders. Just when players, parents and the community were about ready to write off this season, convinced the team would continue its string of never making the playoffs, Perry cut off the naysayers in mid-sentence. "There's a saying out there that losing breeds losing," Perry said. "That's a true statement." And Perry wanted none of it. He told his players that in preseason drills. Not all the players believed, though. Those who didn't are no longer around. "In this profession, to take a program that hasn't been good and to make it good, you have to be a psychologist," said Perry, who in his second year at Sam Houston in 2001 broke a seven-year playoff drought at the school. "You have to be a cheerleader. And you have to be a coach. There are so many things that go into turning a program around. "It's not all physical. There's a lot of mental preparation that goes into getting your team to really believe in what you are doing as a coach." The Volunteers, who have gone from a 1-9 record last season to a 6-2 mark this season under Perry, weren't the only players buying what their new coach was selling. First-year coaches at Martin and Boswell have resurrected struggling programs and have their beleaguered teams on the cusp of elusive playoff berths. At Martin, Bob Wager was hired to take over a team that hadn't sniffed the playoffs since 1999 and was coming off a 3-7 season. But if the postseason started today, the Warriors (3-5), winners of three of their last five games, would be in. Wager isn't surprised. He'd been in similar situations before, having turned teams at Tolar and Groveton into playoff regulars. To ensure the trend continued, Wager snatched up a handful of his former assistants and brought them to Martin. "The one thing that is common with Tolar, Groveton and Martin is we had great staffs and we had great kids," Wager said. "When you have people that all believe in the same thing, I think it gives you a chance." Not everyone gave Wager much of a chance. In fact, Martin opened the season with three consecutive losses. Fans questioned his playcalling. Parents wanted their kids to get more playing time. Outsiders assumed it was a typical Martin year. But Wager told his players there was no room for doubt. "There are a lot of things that pop up when things aren't going your way," Wager said. "But to our kids' credit and our coaches' credit, we were able to focus on the main thing. And that's the reason why we are in the situation we are in now." Unlike Perry and Wager, John Abendschan didn't have to start from scratch at Boswell. He had spent the previous four seasons as an assistant with the Pioneers, so he was familiar with the players. But the coach knew changes needed to be made if Boswell, which is off to a 7-1 start, was going to earn a trip to the playoffs for the first time since 2001. Under previous coaches and playing in the ultra-competitive Class 5A, the Pioneers were typically satisfied with moral victories. Now in Class 4A and with Abendschan running the show, wins are what matter most. "For the last four years, it's been a feeling that we just compete," Abendschan said. "That's not anybody's fault. But it was just the situation that we were in. "Now we have to believe that every time we step on the field we are going to win the game because there is no other reason to come out and play." IN THE KNOW Pretenders to contenders A look at the turnarounds the programs at Martin, Arlington Bowie and Boswell have experienced this season: Team '06 rec. ' 05 rec. Last playoff app. Arl. Bowie 6-2 1-9 None Boswell 7-1 5-5 2001 Martin 3-5 3-7 1999 Hmmmm, sounds like the coach at Boswell is a strong believer in...... I DIDN'T COME HERE TO LOSE!
  5. Well, we could always talk about those eye-popping stats that the team is putting up this year. Speaking of which, are we and La Tech the "pillow fight of the week?". Actually that would be a kind term for the game.
  6. I think when he was OC at A$M he was asked if he would be interested in the NT job, and he said no thanks.
  7. KLUV 98.7 most of the time. KZPS 92.5 classic rock the rest.
  8. The last time we signed a "name" coach was Hayden Fry. It has been pointed out that we got him because we payed him two salaries AD & HC. In order to do something similar again, we would have to fire RV and give Hank Dickinson more administrative duties....including fund-raising....and take him out of the booth. Now, if we were going to do something like that, then I would advocate firing both RV and Hank, pay some promising radio/tv intern to do the color commentary with GD, and then hire Jim Hobdy to be the athletic director. ....or (I like this better), keep RV, fire Hank Dickinson, hire the aforementioned intern, and then hire Jim Hobdy to be assistant AD in charge of promotions and fund raising. With Jim, we would get much more bang for our buck as far as promotions and fund raising goes. OR, we can learn the lessons of having Hayden Fry as our coach and hire an up-and-coming coach just like him, for a bargain price. You know, someone with a lot of fire, people skills, and someone who is not afraid of sending out a long bomb pass play to the QB, when we are back up on our own one yard line. This coach will quickly be hired away from us. But if we are smart, (past history says that that is a big IF) we will already have his replacement in mind, and insert the "next Hayden Fry-type" coach into the position and keep going. We could even make money on this. We could build in a very profitable buy-out clause for the school, so that the University will have more money to offer the next up-and-coming "Hayden Fry".
  9. .....AND finished with a winning record (6-5).
  10. We're talking about ten years, so "how many times they change the logo/brand/mascot/name" would be the question.
  11. Well then, here's the solution to our problem. Let's re-assign Dickey to some administrative job, and move the Women's soccer coach over to coach the football team.
  12. I'll take one.....size XX please.
  13. Isn't this a day early for a Halloween joke? At least I hope it's a joke......
  14. I think that Evans (for his ability to recruit) and Bliel (for the excellent work he's done with the defense in such a short amount of time), as well as Ramone Archie, and Andy Brewster should stay. The main coach to replace would be the OC. Let's suppose that we're told that a search for a promising OC is going to take place. What promising OC would come here and work under the conditions that we all know exist. Everything would have to be approved by Dickey, and DD is not going to approve the kind of offense that we all want to see installed. He'd be vetoing 95% of what a new OC would be sending down to go out to the QB. I repeat, no promising OC would work under those conditions.
  15. Hmmmm, sounds like Stockstill is saying.. I DIDN'T COME HERE TO LOSE!
  16. Even when DD's offense was working at it's best, it mainly worked against SBC teams. We've known since our first bowl game against Colorado State how effective it was against the rest of the world.
  17. And the price for that was to keep DD. The cost in bad publicity is probably much more than 1 mil.
  18. Personally, I would love to interview the real people involved in DD still being here. I would love to have Bobby Ray and Jim McEnvale (sp?) in a room at the same time and ask them what in the hell they were (or are) thinking? I might also ask them what color the sky is in their world.
  19. This is OUR SCHOOL FOLKS. Here's an idea. Why don't we all show up to the LaTech game with grocery bags over our heads like Deep's avatar. We could decorate them to express out displeasure with the coaching. I'm not willing to just hand my school's athletic fate over to non-North Texas people who will just dismiss our absence by saying....."well, those guys are just a bunch of quitters anyway....who cares about them or their opinion" OR they might say "well, they're just a bunch of typical North Texas fair weather fans....who cares if they dont' show up". DO LIKE ME. SHOW UP AND VOICE YOUR DISPLEASURE (CAN YOU SAY "WE'RE GETTING OUT-COACHED? ). DON'T BOO, BECAUSE THAT WILL BE CONSTRUED AS BOOING THE PLAYERS, AND THEN YOU'LL LOSE CREDIBILITY THAT WAY.
  20. Could this be a kicker prospect for NT? Boswell 31, Springtown 28 FG lifts Boswell as time expires By NAKIA HOGAN Star-Telegram Staff Writer SPECIAL TO THE STAR-TELEGRAM/BOB HAYNES SPRINGTOWN -- Greg Lopez's legs felt like spaghetti. His heart threatened to beat right out of his jersey. He tried to suck in one more gasp of air, but a lump grew in his throat. As the Boswell senior kicker lined up for a career-long 48-yard field-goal attempt, he had never been so uneasy. After his kick sailed just over the crossbar, he had never felt so good. Lopez's kick as time expired lifted the Pioneers to a pivotal 31-28 District 6-4A victory over Springtown onj Friday night at Porcupine Stadium. "I have never been so nervous before in my life," he said moments after being mobbed by his teammates. "But as soon as I hit it, I knew it was good." Kicking a 48 yrd FG under intense pressure sounds pretty impressive to me. The new coaching staff ought to look at this young man.
  21. I like all the suggestions with Texas ties. I don't like the So Miss crony suggestion.
  22. When I first registered for classes at North Texas (part-time student, Jan of 73) North Texas had just finished a 1-10 year, the Football program had just dodged a bullet because there had been a student referendum over keeping football or not (it barely passed), and Hayden Fry was hired as the new coach. The roller coaster ride since then has been.....interesting. But I'll take a roller coaster ride over this funeral dirge we've been marching to.
  23. To me, that is absolutely sickening.
  24. You know, I've often wondered how many copies of that book were sold.
  25. Excellent point Zeke! No cronyism in the next big hire!
