I'm not sure you understand the definition of sheep. Not ever questioning someone's decision making process is......being a sheep. And for that matter, not being a good American either.
-
It's his job to know about other possibilities besides someone he knew and/or worked with. Would you consider it professional and competent for the Dallas police personel dept. to only look at sons/daughters/relatives of current police officers as potential recruits? Don't they (Dallas police HR) go to "other" areas to try and recruit?
-
Let me answer your question with another question. Why have most of the initial contacts/inquiries been former S. Miss players/coaches/alumni. Doesn't RV get out very much?
-
That, and being a great motivator.....of football players AND fans/alumni.

Oh Man! This is sounding better and better all the time. Mitch, as far as being "competitive" I'd put you right up there with my favorite...Jordan Case. My all-time list of competitive QB's at North Texas. 1. (tie) Jordan Case and Mitch Maher 2. Scott Davis 3. Scott Hall 4. Greg Carter

I've always wondered if "Zekes" was owned by Zeke Martin. It was located directly across from the old lab school, where the athletic department had it's offices. One time back in 72 while I was working for the University, we took a break at Zekes. Rod Rust came over to get a soda and visited with us for a while. I never got to meet Zeke Martin, but I've heard a lot of very good things about him. Big loss for the school.

I noticed that Nix wasn't a candidate for any of the positions either. Is RV the only one interested in Nix?

Geez, in that official photo, Todd Whitten looks just like Jim Wacker.

James L. Rogers, UNT historian, dies at age 80

I have a copy of the 1965 edition of "The Story of North Texas", and use it as reference from time to time. -
I remember him from the Hayden Fry era. He and Charles Murray were great receivers who made Jordan Case look good......actually better. My questions are these... How good is he at public speaking? How good is he at motivating the students/alumni/potential donors?

I hope we find someone EXACTLY like Graham.

DRC article "RV holds UNT's football fate"
SilverEagle replied to NT03's topic in Mean Green Football
There are a lot of coaches being fired these days, and some coaches moving up to take their place. The most recent is the North Carolina coach. The Rumor mill also puts the Cincy coach at Mich.St., and the Louisville coach being hired away. If Nix is the hot prospect that some people seem to think he is, any of the above mentioned openings would be more attractive to him than coming to Texas. And of the coaches mentioned in the article, my choices would be Dodge, Price, and Nix, in that order. -
I used to pee on the wall.
-
I know what Todd Dodge can do. Also, Todd Dodge has actually worked at North Texas, so he knows first hand what the challenges are. If he takes the job, he has a much better idea about what he needs to do to turn things around, than someone who has spent his career around S. Miss. Don Carthel took over a similar situation to North Texas and has worked his ass off to turn things around out there. Those are tangible things that I know. I'm glad that Nix is a fiery coach. There are LOTS of fiery coaches out there.....they aren't all successful. And as to relaxing and letting RV do his job. Since I haven't been crazy about all of his hiring decisions thus far, I'll remain somewhat skeptical about this process. We don't have too much margin for error on this decision, and we can't afford a crony hire just for the sake of RV's comfort.
-
Thanks Deep. Now, if someone could post the article that includes the Q&A with Coach Carthel, everyone can see the type of coach that we badly need here at North Texas.
-
We've already broken ground on that issue when we hired Matt Simon. And, as I recall, our OC for the last 5+ years has been African American. In both situations, that didn't do us any good, or give us any advantages....coaching wise, or recruitment wise. Has anyone noticed that the young, energetic, made-contacts-with-anyone-and-everyone-in-the-community-and-caused-excitment-amongst-alumni, coach at Rice has got them in a bowl in his first year of coaching? If anyone has the article about him when he was first hired, I'd like to see it posted again. He sounds just like Coach Carthel at West Texas A&M. Hard working, energetic, out-going, positive, and runs a entertaining offense. Carthel is not a household name, but I would be willing to bet a $100 bill (wrinkled or unwrinkled.. your choice) that most of the High School head coaches in West Texas and most of the HS coaches in the Metroplex know about him. And I'd be willing to bet the same amount of money that they ALL have a great amount of respect for him. If we don't get either Carthel, or Todd Dodge, we need someone just like them......ideally with Texas ties, not Southern Miss ties.

Full l*Telegram article DD's long, often painful
SilverEagle replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
My friend who used to cover football in this area for the Gainesville paper, said basically the same thing, only he used 1-A and 2-A High School football for his example. He said that if DD or RF feel that they are/were verbally mistreated, they should try coaching 1-A and 2-A football in Texas with only about 10 to 15 feet separating them from the disgruntled fans. He said that anyone who has ever coached HS football at that level would love to have fans like North Texas fans. He added that "We're gettin out-coached" wouldn't even be noticed by those coaches. -
This is where you went wrong. You must play with negative people.

*from the same article that appeared in the 1979 Texas Football (Casing the joint, and with real persistence. by Temple Pouncy....a North Texas graduate BTW) Case took a hard hit in the lower back in the (1978) season opener against UTEP, and when the medics surveyed damage, they found that Case had a congenitally bad back. "It's a birth defect", said Case. I'd always had backaches, but I thought that came with the game. The X-rays found the muscles around my spine were not fully developed, and a vertebrae was split. It was painfu. Every game it got worse, and it sure made me slow down running with the ball". For most of the season, Case would play hard on Saturday, and it would take him three days to recover. "At times, on Monday I couldn't bend over," Case recalled the spring. Some of those days I could hardly walk. After the Lousiana Tech game, Joe Stephenson (his roommate and backup QB) had to help me out of bed. I was on crutches a few days that week. Usually, Case could practice the last two or three days of each week, but on game day he received four shots in the spine." The article went on to say that Case helped his condition a lot by lifting weights, at the suggestion of Jerry Moore. The Dallas Cowboys were interested in Case until their team Doctor confirmed that he had a congenital back problem. They (and other NFL teams) wouldn't take a chance. It (the back problem) eventually ended his Canadian Pro career.

Well Franchione just inked himself five more years

1. THAT was Hayden Fry's main message when he came to North Texas. And THAT is why he is so revered by almuni from that era. 2,. Man, I would really be in trouble if I tried to take a math course these days. I used to think that all the Amercian born (even Texas born) math teachers that I had in High School and College spoke a foreign language. I've always admired people that could effectively teach math. I just never ran into any of them. -

Yeah, we've been doing a hatchet job on his reputation for years. That must be why he wasn't hired away from us after those four bowl trips. -
I don't see that hurting recruiting. Knowing that our dysfunctional coaching situation has been dealt with, can only help recruiting.

Ecouraging words from a current student. The other question is "who gave the coach and/or the athletes the right to change the school uni's on a whim?". Remember that the "lack of traditions" and "pride in our school identity" have always been two major issues with North Texas. IMHO, getting upset about this incident just shows that people care about our school's image.....and traditions. -
Are you kidding? That is the favorite sport/pass time of most North Texas students....and many alumni. Just remember my old adage about North Texas students. You could stand on the busiest corner of the North Texas campus and hand out $100 bills. Eventually (and you probably wouldn't have to wait very long) some student would bitch that theirs was wrinkled.

It needs to be a minimum of 32 to 35K before anyone other than Baylor, SMU and/or TCU will come play here.
