Excited About Our Recruiting Class So Far
SilverEagle replied to BonfireBrian's topic in Mean Green Football
Well then, there's the main problem. If a North Texas graduate can't believe it, then why should we expect the recruits that we go after to believe that North Texas is a perfectly viable option to A$M...or any other D-1 school in Texas for that matter. It isn't delusional to believe in your school. If we're such an unworthy school, then Todd Dodge would have said "no thanks" to us, just like he did to Rice. We all had better start doing our part to promote this football program. If we expect Todd Dodge to do it all for us, then we'll end up missing another golden opportunity to move forward like we did with Hayden Fry. When Hayden Fry took over as head coach back in 73, you couldn't have made him say that A$M (or any other SWC school) was better than North Texas...even if you held a gun to his head. We must all have the same mind-set.....it's worked well for A$M all these years. -
Klein Offensive Lineman Commits To Unt
SilverEagle replied to bdan2002's topic in Mean Green Football
In the NT medica guide, it lists Tony Elliott as a DE, but I remember him playing Nose Tackle for North Texas. I think he played the same position with New Orleans......where he had some pretty good years. I also remember that he was a transfer from Illinois. If Mr. Gillmore performs as well as Bernard West did back in 78-79, then I'll be impressed with him. -
Until our image has been re-established, I advocate that the main thing that we buy and wear is green. I agree with MGD. Buy the gear that is the closest to Kelly green and then wear it as much as possible. I hate those black-on-black, or white-on-white hats.

Here's my take on that situation. Unless we get Baylor to come back, or TCU, or some other (in the eyes of the casual fan/student) high profile team, then we'll probably never fill up Fouts to it's capacity of 30.5K. Why? Because as crappy as the regular seating is.....the endzone seats are even worse. They are all-metal, which makes them brutal to sit on early in the season, and you can't see worth a damn unless the teams are practically on the goal-line. Even if North Texas turns into the most entertaining/ass-kicking football team in all of Texas this fall, everyone watching from the endzone seats will overall be punished for their experience, more than they will be entertained.

I'm still very impressed that we could get a young man like Scoggins, who wanted to play TE (and could have at Iowa St.), and talk him into coming here to play in the defensive line. Now THAT'S recruiting.

I think my first game was 10-26-63 NT vs Wichita State. NT won 7-3. My HS band attended homecoming/band day at North Texas.

The first home game in 1960 was UTEP. It ended in a 16-16 tie.

Dodge's First Unt Home Game At Fouts Will Be......
SilverEagle replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
My concern is attendance. I would be glad to sacrifice the TV coverage for the opportunity to fill Fouts and expose all those previous "fence-sitters" to the new game day atmosphere at Fouts. The best way to do that is have the game at 6:00 on a Saturday. We may play a hell of a game on Thursday night, and will probably win. But I want people to get hooked on the "whole package", and you can't have a proper tailgating experience at a Thursday night game. -
Well, that's who I thought it was too. But if it is him, I have to say that I've never heard him being so subdued in his conversation for so long a time. His conversation is usually much more.......animated.

In 1980 Malcom Jones (listed as 5'6" X 150 in the 1978 press guide), gained 1144 yards. Malcom Jones was the third back in NT History to gain 1000 yards. In the 2005 press guide Carlen Charleston ( who was all of 5'5" X 155 lbs) was listed as tied for the #7 position in career all-purpose yards with 2997 total yrds.

Breaking News-----stadium News------
SilverEagle replied to UNT_playmaker's topic in Mean Green Football
How long did it take for SMU to have Ford Stadium built.....in a land-locked location. Rice/Eccles Stadium (Salt Lake City) was built in one year, in a land-locked location in a city that has real winters. The proposed location for our stadium is not land-locked and construction would be pretty unencumbered. A little over a year at the most. -
well, after all heck broke loose at TDC, he problably did lose something

North Texas Football Notes...star-telegram 1-26
SilverEagle replied to SilverEagle's topic in Mean Green Football
Oh, I dunno...maybe puttting a team on the field that actually tries to win EVERY GAME! Here's another crazy thought. How about having a coaching staff that is actually glad to be at North Texas and looks forward to connecting with the fans/alumni... -
UNT FOOTBALL NOTES UNT's spring dates set By TROY PHILLIPS Star-Telegram Staff Writer North Texas coach Todd Dodge said Thursday that dates for his program's first spring football workouts are nearly set. UNT's spring practice will open March 13 and end with the spring game at 3 p.m. April 22. UNT is on spring break March 19-23, and practice likely will resume the following week. In the past few days, Dodge said he had seen his players in off-season conditioning for the first time. His first team meeting was last week, and he'll sign his first recruiting class Feb. 7. Tight end decisions Entering the spring, UNT has more tight ends (at least five) than wide receivers on scholarship. With the spread offense Todd Dodge is installing, it's no surprise that six high school wideouts have committed to the Mean Green. Another, Evan Fentriss, has already transferred from Rice. "We have to evaluate our flexibility on offense," Dodge said. "It might be to our advantage to use tight end sets." Dodge won't rule out moving some tight ends to other positions. "It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that we can use more receivers," he said. Muzzy on hold Todd Dodge said receiver Zach Muzzy is pursuing a fifth year of eligibility. Muzzy, who graduates in May, suffered a season-ending knee injury in the fourth game of the 2003 season on UNT's first kickoff return. UNT is asking the NCAA to waive its 20-percent rule that denies medical hardships to injured players who appeared in more than 20 percent of a team's games in a season. Technically, Muzzy played in 30 percent of UNT's 13 games in 2003. Muzzy's scheduled degree, good grades and his lack of a redshirt year could factor into the decision. Lewis leaves After less than a month on the job, UNT defensive ends coach Derek Lewis resigned this week to become tight ends coach at Minnesota. Lewis, a former tight end at Texas, was coached there in 1998 by Tim Brewster, Minnesota's new head coach and a former tight ends coach with the Longhorns. Spring game on a Sunday afternoon? Not a bad idea. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Troy Phillips, 817-390-7760 tphillips@star-telegram.com

Meager to WR and Tune to DB? I have to respectfully disagree. Both of those guys can play QB, and with some real coaching/teaching they are going to be great. Mr. Vizza will have his work cut out for him this fall in trying to move ahead of those two. BTW, my wife wants to know if "Don Dodge" made Giovanni Vizza an offer he couldn't refuse.

I am assuming that you're saying no to the TE question. If that is the case, are you saying that he needs to get speed to play in the OL? or at WR? If there are no TE's in the offense, then there are several athletes on the North Texas team that have a decision to make. Most notably; Bryant Seidle TE, 6-3 X 230 fr. Victor Gill TE 6-5 X 235 Fr. David Collins, 6-4 X 220 Fr. Draylen Ross played some TE early in the season, but he's still listed as a DE in the 11-04-06 game program. Also, what about the FB's on the team. Keronna Henderson and Ryan Davenport? Does the TD/Ford offense have FB's in it?
-
........ My only comment is this. Since Scoggins made it clear that he wanted to play TE in college (which is why he was attracted to Iowa St.) why has he changed his mind about NT? Has the coaching staff promised him a shot at TE. Does TD's (and Fords) offense even have a TE?
-
Well, I certainly hope so. I get real tired of the debate/discussion about mascot/nickname and who we are really. We are both! I never understood why it was such a hard concept for people to understand.

Running Back To Play Safety For Mean Green
SilverEagle replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
He can bust his arse all he wants, but if the OL isn't busting their collective arse's first, he's going to have the same results as last year. I have a feeling that we are going to have a lot of renewed spirit/arse-busting on this team.....starting this spring. -
Nt Has 4 Fb Prospects On The Fw*telegram Top State 100
SilverEagle replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
Well, that might be. But most of the time...make that all the time, I don't comb those lists, ......and neither do most of the 90k+ alumni in the D/FW area. They look at the local lists (as do the local recruits, their parents and coaches) and see at a glance that North Texas is not getting any commitments from local talent. That's a "buzz killer" any way you look at it. It leads to a lack of interest from the fan base, because they think that no player of any ability in the D/FW area is interested in North Texas. For the first time since Hayden Fry, that has now changed.
