  1. According to the press guide, he only lettered one year.. 1971. The Rev. Tommy Nelson ('73) of Denton, founding pastor of Denton Bible Church. Nelson received his bachelor of science degree in physical education and was a quarterback for the Eagles. The chaplain of the team from 1991 to 1993, Nelson was also a member of the 1990 search committee to find a new coach. He is a strong supporter of the UNT chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and ministers to UNT students through the college program at Denton Bible Church, which he founded in 1977. Since that time, the church has grown from 100 members to about 4,000 members. Nelson became well known in 1991 for his Song of Solomon seminars on relationships and marriage. He is also the author of The Big Picture and The Book of Romance and a national speaker for Campus Crusade for Christ and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. So we can partially blame him for hiring Dennis Parker instead of Paul Johnson.
  2. Hopefully the drills mentioned above will sort out the "unfocused" or "abandon ship!" QB's by the end of spring practice.
  3. This is very interesting, because one of the things that I've always looked for in a QB is a "presence" or "confidence" in the pocket. To me, one of the main indicators of "presence" and "confidence" was when the QB seems oblivious to the fray going on around him while he was focusing on identifying his receivers and completing (or attempting to complete) his pass. The natural QB's ignore the fray and only move enough to get out of the way and complete their task. In doing that, they're using their peripheral vision to help them avoid the rush. During that whole time they're never actually looking at the rush, they're keeping their focus on their goal. These QB's are often still looking down field at a target while they are being tackled/sacked. Their whole body language conveys focus and confidence. The no-so-natural QB's change their focus to the rush and get happy feet. Their whole body language says "holy $hit! I've got to get out of here!...abandon ship! abandon ship!. It'll be interesting to see how well this drill/technique works. Because if a QB's natural inclination is to get "happy feet" when someone is within a few yards of him, then it's going to take a lot of drills to change that.
  4. And this young man was one of the better players for the defense in the last three years. Imagine how he'll do now that he's inspired.
  5. Plano's football tradition started long before it became a city of 275K. My HS (Decatur) used to play Plano in the 60's when Plano had already established it's football tradition while it was a small farming community. Everyone who came to Plano afterward embraced that tradition, and/or they were drawn to Plano because of that tradition. The same thing applies to South Lake Carrol. They established their winning tradition as a small 1-A (the same as present day 2-A) program and it continued unchanged as they moved up in classification. Again, people who wanted to have their kids go to a school with a winning tradition were drawn to South Lake.
  6. Deep wasn't suggesting that our cheerleaders visit the local elementary schools. He was pointing out that (at least in his area) school spirit was something that started very early. So, if the majority of the freshman who come here convey to the orientation people that they think the whole spirit thing is "gay", then they must have had the same attitude in HS.....and it was probably deeply entrenched. BTW, one school that I can think of that had a losing record but no lack of people that wanted to go to school there was A$M during most of the 60's. Yes they won the SWC in 67, but the rest of the time they were the butt of everyone's jokes. Yet, people still wanted to go there. And my guess is that the people that wanted to go there during the 60's (and most other times for that matter) were the ones who were involved in their HS organizations and spirit groups.
  7. I've often wondered if the HS students who wanted a more "school-spirit-rah-rah" atmosphere avoided going to NT for the very reason that we are having this thread in the first place. If that is the case, then what this school (in particular the spirit organizations) is left to work with is mostly a group of new students who were the disenfranchised at their respective High Schools.
  8. Here we are in 2007 talking about the same issue that has been going on since the early 70's. I'm not sure what the solution is, but I agree that a positive attitude is the only way that it's going to get resolved. Consistency is the other issue. This University (and by that I mean the alumni as well) is rarely consistent in instilling and promoting spirit at North Texas. I'm open to hearing positive and constructive ideas. We're already pretty overstocked with sarcastic ideas. That seems to be the only thing we're consistent about.
  9. Well, let's see. I believe it will be out of the shotgun, and it will be whatever the QB reads that the defense is giving him. Having said that, it could very well be a bomb if the defense is cheating up to stop the run and/or mid-range pass.
  10. I forgot how funny those people could be about setting policy. Are they saying that they would not give out an extra parking pass or two to someone who had just made a $10,000 MGC donation? You know, if someone has turned loose of that kind of money, I would not have a problem with them having a parking space for every $1000 of their donation. Besides, the last time I was in the orange parking lot for a game, there had to be at least 100 extra parking spaces available. It's a bit early to be treating the orange parking lot as if it's the hottest parking pass in town on game day.
  11. Well, considering that Craig Miller thinks that his own Alma Mater doesn't exsist (sports wise), I'll have to give that opinion the consideration that it deserves.........none!
  12. After the 72 season (1-10) there was a student referendum about keeping football or not. The vote was to keep football, but I heard that it just barely passed. I don't know if the referendum was before or after they fired Rod Rust. Hayden Fry was hired after Rust was fired (who went on to have a very good Pro career in coaching) and the rest, as they say, is history.
  13. Why would they close practices and then have the spring game on TV? If their starters are good, or if they suck, it's going to show during the spring game. Even if they run just a few basic running and passing plays.
  14. I totally agree! WAY TO GO HARRY!
  15. Hmmmm, sounds like your editor isn't being entirely straight with you............. I know! Why don't you tell your editor that someone on gmg.com claims to be the father of Anna Nicole Smith's baby. That's always a sure way to get a story published............
  16. I can't seem to find it. Can you link the article for us?
  17. If this is who I think they're talking about, he used to own a Ford dealership.
  18. With the Cotton Bowl moving, this is going to look really bad for the current administration at Dallas City hall. This includes the city council as well. With this latest move, they only have the Texas/OU game at the stadium. Hardly worth the cost of refurbishing the old Cotton Bowl.
  19. I'm glad this question is answered. Now people on the board will have to think up something else to obsess about.
  20. Why can't you do both?
  21. Here is the link to the info in the athletic dept. web-site. http://www.meangreensports.com/ViewArticle...amp;SPSID=37327 I keep asking if anyone went to the tryouts, but I guess there wasn't a gomeangreen representative there.
  22. Is this young man still in HS, or did he show up to the walk-on try-outs earlier this week.
  23. I guess this is as good a place as any to post what my fantasy would be about Todd Dodge coming to North Texas. I find this situation similar to the one that Florida State was in back in the mid-70's. Here is an excerpt from Bobby Bowden's bio on the FSU athletic web-site. "Bowden's remarkable career numbers are even more impressive considering the fact that he took over an FSU program in 1976 that had won just four games over the previous three seasons. He has remained at FSU despite offers from NFL teams and several other prestigious college football programs. Bowden's loyalty has meant the world to Florida State University and its athletics program." It's been posted many times in the recent past that when Bobby Bowden took over at Florida State their program was very lightly regarded. Proof of that is the fact that in Bobby Bowden's first year, they came to Fouts field to play us at our homecoming game. It is my hope that Todd Dodge becomes the coach that everyone hopes he can be. If that happens, it is also my hope (and I guess my fantasy) that he decides to make North Texas the next Florida State and stay here to be the coach that all subsequent coaches at North Texas will be compared to. Instead of being the next great coach in a long line of other great coaches at some other prestigious program. But in order for that to happen, we have to be the fans that I hope we can be. Neither Coach Dodge nor RV can do it for us.
