How Have You Benefitted By Dropping The "state" From Unt
SilverEagle replied to KAjunRaider's topic in Mean Green Football
3x has the correct information. UNT was our first choice in 1960 when the bill for our name change was filed. After much discussion, and threats of filibusters, not to mention dismissive comments about our school in the official records, a compromise name was agreed upon......NTSU. I'm guessing that our administration re-visited this issue back in 1988 when it was very clear that we were heading toward being a more "research" focused institution. And more than ever, we needed a name that reflected that status. So, KajunRaider. Ya'll might want to check on the political atmosphere regarding a name change before you worry about "Vol alumni" continuing to call you MTSU. -
Greatest High School Running Back You Ever Saw Play?
SilverEagle replied to NT03's topic in Mean Green Football
Out of the same Texas backfield, I saw Billy Dale (#22) and his Odessa Permian team play at Amon Carter Stadium against Texarkana. Dale wasn't particularly impressive, but (like he did in the first Texas/Notre Dame Cotton Bowl game), he got the job done. Texarkana's Robbie Patman was much more impressive that day, but Permian, and Dale, made the plays when they had to. During the same era, I saw Jacksboro's Glen King play. He was an all-state RB and ended up playing for Oklahoma. I also saw a pretty impressive performance from John Griggs of Plano in a regional game vs my old High School (Decatur) in 1966. -
Ken Washington got us a lot of publicity (mainly because he was the brother of Joe Washington), but he was very overrated as a QB. All time passing efficiency 1. Scott Hall, 132.26 (four year starter) 2. Mitch Maher, 128.56 (four year starter) 3. Scoptt Davis, 126.44 (four year starter) 4. Steve Ramsey, 116.16 (three year starter) 5. Jordan Case, 111.61 (two year starter) 6. Ken Washington, 105.01 (four year starter) Passing yards #7 Ken Washington, 3040 (over four years as a starter) #9 Jordan Case, 2608 (over two years as a starter) Completion Percentage 1. Jordan Case, .616 ( 218-354) Ken Washington.....not listed in the top 6. FWIW, I'd take Jordan Case's backup, Joe Stevenson, over Ken Washington any day.....and twice on Saturdays. I'd also take the guys who filled in for Ken Washington (Ken Smith & Glen Ray) when he was hurt in 75 & 76, over him.

Next time you might want to save yourself a little time and just send GrayEagleone a PM. He's the only one who gave a specific response.

It'll only be sad if we don't avail ourselves of the opportunity to increase our fan base during these positive times with TD as head coach. RV should already be looking around for the next up-and-coming coach who has a positive attitude, a great ability to interact with the students/fans/alumni, and who puts an exciting brand of football on the field. We tend to put too much on one guy. We need to make sure that the decision/policy makers are in place that gave us TD in the first place. As long as we have Dr. B and RV running things, we should be fine. To illustrate my point. I had a chance to talk with a very knowledgable alum after the spring game. I asked him who's idea it was to hire Hayden Fry. He said that it was Jitter Nolan's idea. That confirmed what I always suspected. Not long after Fry left (or maybe at the same time), the "old nesters" at North Texas ran off Jitter Nolan. Shortly after that, we quickly retreated back to "old attitudes" about sports. It was only a few years after that that we moved down to 1-AA, and the "powers-that-be/old nesters" didn't seem to care. So, it was the "decision makers" that put us behind in sports all those years. We need to be as worried about keeping Dr. B and RV as we are about keeping TD.

I am really looking forward to this. My introduction to the North Texas football experience was watching/listening to a Maurice Mcadow Band. It should be interesting to hear what post-75 alumni think of how the original fight song sounds.

North Texas Exes Alumni Association Seeks
SilverEagle replied to WIFE2HOT4U's topic in Mean Green Football
It's too bad that FFRick and my son are working the same shift for the fire department. Otherwise they could apply to job-share this position. -
I agree with Emmitt that we need more lawn signs, but I have something more high traffic in mind. I was thinking about putting up lawn-type signs up along the roadways (exits from neighborhoods and turn-offs to major roads) that lead to (or head toward) Fouts. These would be much like those real estate signs that you see on the week-ends. The signs would have SOW on it and say something like "This way to Mean Green Football" or "This way to the best Football in Texas". For instance, I would place some along Basswood (North Fort Worth) heading toward I-35 and then have one at the bridge where Basswood crosses I-35 and having it pointing North toward Denton. Volunteers could go out and put them up on Friday and take them down on Sunday, just like they do with real estate signs. Another thing would be to make schedule posters showing a shot (or shots) of the mean green village and the tailgating area. I would put these up at businesses all around Denton, and Denton county. By looking at the schedule posters, people could not only know who our opponents are, they can also see what an "event" the game has become. I'd make the same type of posters to go up all over the campus.

The "Village" is the football field-sized section of green just to the left of Fouts, and bordered on the top by a small section of the parking lot. The "Village" consists of various groups and organizations (and some businesses) that set up tents on the outside edge of the "Village". Since it was (and may still be) a practice field, the tents would be on the sidelines and endzone sections. The parking area that borders the top of the village is the (former) Orange parking lot........where all the cool people tailgate.

There is an article in this mornings ST with Steve Austin. Dave Thomas asks him specifically about his interest in North Texas football, and hints to him that he might want to contribute to a new stadium. I can't find the on-line link to the story. Answers? 1. He only follows North Texas football as long as the football score crawls across the ESPN screen. His main memories of his playing days was North Texas regularly getting it's ass kicked. 2. He just purchased a ranch in South Texas, so he has no disposable income to contribute to the stadium. I think that everyone that has been wishing and hoping that "Stone Cold" will become involved in the program, can just focus on someone else now.

This reminds me of any episode of "America's funniest home videos", where it must be a rule that you must have at least one "guy-hit-in-the-crotch" video.

Speaking of former recruits that were placed at a CC. What ever happened to Devin Godbolt who finished his HS career at Liberty Christian.

Well, in situations like this I always think of Brian Waters. He must have had much more raw talent than I remembered, because he played two or three different positions while he was at North Texas...........none of them OG. I believe that he's still all-pro at that position. http://www.kcchiefs.com/player/brian_waters/ Did I mention that he never played OG at North Texas? If Mr. Lineberry has the appropriate level of motivation to make it, I'm confident that he will.

An Absurdly Premature Assessment Of: North Texas
SilverEagle replied to Spaceraider's topic in Mean Green Football
If Danny looked better in the spring than he did all of last year, (IMHO) it's not because of the offense, it's because he now has a REAL coach. -
Considering that in the last two years MANY PEOPLE have expressed an interest (in one way or another) in the Exes logo, I wonder why flags were ordered and they didn't anticipate that someone might want to buy one?

Now That We Have Four Months Without Football

Well, we could always play the North Texas GMG version of...... SPOT THE LOONEY! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyfirCjSlpk -
I'll be anxious to see how Roberson does against D-1 DB's in fall practice. He needs to get hit by those guys, early and often. After that we'll know if he has more than " great potential". I'm crossing my fingers that he will be another player from a small HS (like Jamario) who makes a real impact his freshman year.

I wish all of that rain in Denton had moved a few miles north and dumped into Lake Ray Roberts.

Spring Game Story From Meangreensports.com

So how does anyone assess a play like that? Is JMO not his old self, or is Montey Stevenson showing us what a force he's going to be this fall? I choose the latter. -
Gotta Wash Out The Old Stinch From My Jersey Cause
SilverEagle replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
That's true. At the most, Zero-U will send us 5K tickets. A small amount will be availabe for students, but the majority will be for MGC/ season ticket holders. -
Overall the whole team seemed more pumped for this scrimmage. QB's Meager looked the best of all of them, although he still has a tendency to try and force his throws sometimes. He settled down after a while and did fine. I didn't like Wilson starting off by running, but before the day was over he was a pretty close second to Meager in his overall performance. He's not the most accomplished ball handler, but he slowed some pretty good touch on some of his passes. I agree with Zeke that Tune seems to have regressed some......for that matter I thought that Phillips has too. I rank them this way going into fall practice, 1. Meager, 2. Wilson, 3. Tune 3a. Phillips. That pass catch by Fitzgerald where the DB rolled him over the top and Fitz's feet never touch the ground was fantastic. It showed a lot of "heads-up" by Fitz. He's going to make plays any way he can. This guy is hungry and it's going to take a lot to keep him out of the WR rotation this fall. Our D-line rush was awsome today. I'm not worried at all about out defense this fall.
