  1. Hmmm, this ought to make for an interesting conversation. Hope you have better luck than Rick and I did.
  2. I agree with LongJim.....a class lady. The photo featured on the Star-Telegram web-page is half-page in the printed version. Very impressive. http://www.star-telegram.com/
  3. Well, that's too bad. They could use someone of your competence on some sort of planning/action committee.
  4. You know Jack, I've noticed that this is at least the second time you've used the term "we" when posting on this subject. Can I assume by the way you use the term "we" that you have been actively included in the project by the athletic department?
  5. Have you ever ventured over to their football message board.? On any given day, I think that *Al Swearingin must be the monitor/moderator for their board. Higher standards? Are you kidding me? It's my humble opinion that they would whore themselves out (entrance standards-wise) for an outstanding athlete just as quickly as any of the other B-12 schools. *At last! I've been able to insert a Deadwood reference into a post.
  6. they printed "Booger" towels. I still carry mine to every game, but the idea never really stuck. Yeah, when you have the words "Booger" and "stuck" in close proximity there is definitely potential for some male humor.
  7. Has Sears Woods ever spent any time with GG.....I mean as a captive audience? I've taken the ride......and heard the stories/monologue. To this day, I'm still in awe of his verbal........ stamina. Yeah, that's the word.
  8. "Oh, and please don't question emmitt. He has plastered schedules all over storefronts throughout Denton, served BBQ to the team, been one of the Green Backers that set out to make tailgating a tradition, etc..." ABSOLUTELY! You can always question Emmitt's sanity , but never his loyalty.
  9. This might read as being critical, but it isn't intended that way. So please, let's not anyone get defensive. Having read all of the comments in this thread, it got me thinking about some of the OCC games that I've attended, most notably OU, UT, & A&M, and it occured to me why I look forward to getting into their stadiums well before kick-off.....other than issue of trying to beat the huge crowds. It's their pageantry, and some of the best pre-game pagentry in College football can be seen on Sept 1st in Norman Okla. UT has great pagentry, and so does A&M (in it's own military way), but I have to give the Okies the nod for some of the greatest pre-game pagentry in all of the southwest. If you haven't been to a game in Norman, you should avail yourself of the opportunity and go up there this Sept 1st. The OU band and spirit groups gets the OU crowd literally worked up into a frenzy with their pre-game pagentry. I've seen a lot of bands (college and high school) and the OU band makes the best "grand entry" of any band I've ever seen. We have a pre-game show, but it really doesn't do much for the crowd. There is no grand entrance by the band, no "working the crowd" by the spirits groups. But that's pretty much how it's always been at North Texas. Of course, it's much harder to make a grand entrance at Fouts field since the portals are about 50 yards from the field, as opposed to how the entrance portals are at Norman and Austin. *note* This last statement is NOT intended to get yet another "we need a new stadium" discussion going. Now, am I saying that the band and spirit groups are mainly responsible for people not being in their seats 30mins before kick-off? No I'm not. But I am suggesting that more pagentry, and the opportunity for more crowd participation in this pre-game pagentry, might be a better incentive for people being in their seats 30 mins before kick-off, than the sale of beer inside the stadium, or some sort of drawing.
  10. From the 70's, Burks Washington From the 80's. Lance White and Byron Gross. Also from the early 80's, Lester Harper all 5'9" X 205 of him. Very intense in the mold of Corbin Epps (Montgomery). So intense that he got kicked out of the LaLa game in 82. And when he started drawing personal foul penalties while standing (actually pacing up and down) on the sideline and running his mouth, Corky Nelson sent him to the showers for the remainder of the game. He's the only player I've ever observed at North Texas that got kicked out of the game AND the stadium. Lester Harper was ALWAYS wearing his "I DIDN'T COME HERE TO LOSE" t-shirt under his uni.
  11. Here's an idea about a new gameday tradition. How about all the people that stay in the parking lot and drink, come into the friggin stadium!!..........30 minutes before kick-off. Howz that?
  12. Harry mentioned that some alumni/fans now expect North Texas to go up and beat OU this year. I don't know about other people's expectations, but mine has always been that the coaches and players for North Texas will show up to every one of their games wearing their "I DIDN'T COME HERE TO LOSE" attitude. That's all I've ever asked. And when that happens, then the wins over the OU's and UT's will take care of themselves. Let's see, I think our fight song covers this issue. "Victory's in store, what'er the score Our team will ever fight, FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!" I don't believe that there is any phrase and/or line in the fight song that goes "Now Realistically". Realistic thnking is for bookies or oddsmakers. But if you want think like a fan, then look up the definition of "fanatic" and then proceed accordingly......but then realistically you'll need to give up betting on football games. Oh, BTW Great job on the broadcast guys. I'm especially excited at the prospect of having a post-game call in show/broadcast.
  13. After looking at the picture, I'd call it (where he's from) "appropriate".
  14. I don't think that Coach Dodge has been on the road looking under every rock, and peeking around every corner, since signing day. IMHO, what is happening is that a lot of coaches and/or scouts around the country are contacting Dodge and/or his staff and giving them good leads. Coach Dodge and his staff are then following up on these leads, making good evaluations/assessments and then pulling the trigger. IMHO, this is happening because Coach Dodge and his staff have an outstanding reputation amongst their peers, AND they are willing to do the follow up work to identify these gems. It's my understanding that in the previous coaching regime, phone calls and/or letters were rarely returned. From what some people have indicated to me, you would have had an easier time extracting secret documents from the FBI/CIA, than getting the previous coaching staff to respond to a lead.
  15. My only concern about this announcement is that it might appear to other prospects (QB's or otherwise) that this is turning into a SLC "clique".
  16. Thanks Rick! And thanks for attending. It meant a lot to Jeff, and it meant a lot to Mrs. SilverEagle. And now we start the process of convincing Tiffany that being a Mean Green fan, is much more fun than being a TCU fan. Of course, since her first Mean Green experience was to be a close up witness to the "FFR-gets-escorted-out-of-the-stands", followed by "RF comes into the stands to talk football with SilverEagle", I just don't know how we can top that for excitement.
  17. Man, those people up there must REALLY love their football team, to put up with them wearing such butt-ugly uni's.
  18. That's up to us. I've said several times that we have the same opportunity that we had when we hired Hayden Fry. Fry got the fan base going, but when he left, the administration (who wasn't ready for a Hayden Fry-type program) didn't hire the "next" Hayden Fry. Since then, (except for Corky Nelson) we've had one administrative hiring SNAFU after another. We now have an administration in place that is ready to do the right thing for our athletic program. They've hired the right type AD, who has FINALLY been able to hire the right kind of coach. And when he's successful here (and he will be), he'll get hired away from us. Our administration will then (hopefully) hire the next Todd Dodge/Hayden Fry-type coach and keep the program moving forward. It's not rocket science. But it won't happen unless WE COME OUT AND SUPPORT THE PROGRAM AND TELL ANYONE AND EVERYONE WE COME INTO CONTACT WITH THAT NORTH TEXAS IS THE PREMIER PROGRAM IN NORTH TEXAS.
  19. I think I've said this before. But I'm looking forward to our QB candidates actually getting some competent coaching/teaching. They've only had a few months of competent instruction, and the shock of being treated with respect and not getting screamed at might have been too much for their systems to initially handle. Fall practice should be where we see the real progress (or the lack thereof) take place.
  20. Yep, he was the TE. Somewhat undersized, but the guy played "very big".....and consistent.
  21. What a great name for a great play!
  22. Now Mitch, how can you forget the guy that you went to when you absolutely, positively, HAD to have a completion.......Luis Silva. That hail mary to him in the SFA game was just classic. During the 60's, John Love, Ronnie Shanklin. 70's , Charles Murry and Pete Harvey 80's, Marvin Walker (22 in one game.....unbelievable!) and Marcus Camper. 90's Clayton George, David Brown and Luis Silva
  23. The last that I heard, Coach Dodge had declared Daniel to be in the lead, but the QB position was still open. I thought that Woody Wilson looked good during the spring game. I find it hard to fathom that any freshmen out of HS can come in and pass up a group of experienced QB's. I think that Mr. Vizza will get a shot, but I believe that he will redshirt this year. If Coach Dodge was seriously thinking about moving Woody Wilson to DB, then why did he sign that DB out of the California community college?
  24. Hmmm, sounds like a modern day Andrew Carnegie.....only less likable.
  25. John Love was what we all hoped Ja'Mel Branch would be....but never was. Love was about 5'9"/5'10" X 180lbs. He could go after the ball alright, but my favorite play to watch was the dump off pass and watching him "shake and bake" for his YAK's. My other favorite thing was watching him return punts. It always brought the crowd to their feet when he got the ball and started heading upfield. To add to your versatility comment, he was also the PAT and field goal kicker for the team.
